'Awesome April' Schedule Is Highlighted By World Title Contests!

In what tends to be an annual event on the blog, the 2018 edition of the "Awesome April of Beltway Boxing" has a number of big bouts for Beltway Boxers including some world title bouts.  Unfortunately, unlike previous years, there are no pro cards scheduled locally.  Here is the scheduled calendar of bouts for April (bouts may change, be added or be cancelled without notice):

Friday, April 6th, 2300 Arena, Philadelphia, PA -- Three Beltway Boxers are slated to be on this card.  Undefeated Washington, DC featherweight Marcus "Dreamcrusher" Bates will be in an eight-round contest against equally undefeated Raeese Aleem of Las Vegas, NV.  Bates (8-0-1, seven KO's) makes his third straight appearance at the 2300 Arena, coming off a six-round knockout victory over Antonio Rodriguez on December 1. Aleem (10-0, five KO's) last fought in August of 2016 when he stopped DeWayne Wisdom in the fourth round in Indianapolis, IN.  This will be the first eight-round bout for both men.

Owings Mills, MD heavyweight Colby Madison will take on Guillermo Del Rio of South Houston, TX in a four-round encounter.  Madison (6-0-1, four KO's) won a six-round unanimous decision over Dante Selby in his last outing on February 13th in Bethlehem, PA.  Del Rio (2-2, two KO's) returns to the ring for the first time since March of 2017 when he lost a six-round unanimous decision to Francisco Rivas in Morelos, Mexico.

Also, Forestville, MD junior lightweight Evgueny Metchenov looks to bounce back from his first pro loss when he battles undefeated Joshafat Ortiz of Reading, PA by way of Ponce, Puerto Rico in a four-round bout.  Metchenov, originally from Sofia, Bulgaria (0-1) lost his pro debut on March 30th to Jahmal Dyer by four-round split decision in Glen Burnie, MD.  Ortiz (2-0, one KO) won a four-round unanimous decision over Sidell Blocker on August 19th in Atlantic City, NJ.

Saturday, April 7th, Rosecroft Raceway, Fort Washington, MD -- The Washington Golden Gloves finals begin at 7:30 PM ET.  If you can't be there, join the live blow-by-blow podcast of the card on the Boxing Along The Beltway Google App For Android beginning at 7:25 PM ET.

Saturday, April 7th, Hard Rock Hotel And Casino, Las Vegas, NV -- Undefeated IBF Junior Middleweight champion "Swift" Jarrett Hurd of Accokeek, MD puts his title on the line in a unification bout against WBA/IBO champion "The American Dream" Erislandy Lara of Houston, TX by way of Guantanamo, Cuba.  Both men fought their last bouts and defended their titles on October 14th in Brooklyn, NY.  Hurd (21-0, 15 KO's) scored a 10th-round stoppage of former world champion Austin Trout while Lara (25-2-2, 14 KO's) won a 12-round unanimous decision over Terrell Gausha.  The bout will be televised by Showtime.

Saturday, April 7th, Eko Hotel Convention Center, Lagos, Nigeria -- Former WBO Super Lightweight champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley of Washington, DC battles Jesus "Jibarito" Ortega of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico in a 12-round lightweight contest.  No word on any title on the line.  Corley (50-29-1, 28 KO's) looks to bounce back from his eight-round unanimous decision loss to Hank Lundy on February 10th in Philadelphia, PA.  Ortega (15-2, 10 KO's) is riding an 11-bout winning streak including a second-round knockout of Francisco Rodriguez on November 10th in Hermosillo.

Saturday, April 7th, Municipal Auditorium, Sarasota, FL -- Seat Pleasant, MD featherweight James "Too Slick" Early returns to action in a six-round contest against undefeated Joshua Draughter of New Orleans, LA.  Early (2-2) will look to break a two-bout losing streak.  Early lost a four-round unanimous decision to Juan Sanchez on November 21st in Bethlehem, PA.  Draughter (3-0, one KO) scored a first-round TKO in his last outing over the debuting Kwatevion Nijee Islom on February 23rd in Charlotte, NC.

Friday, April 13th, Sands Bethlehem Events Center, Bethlehem, PA -- Crofton, MD cruiserweight Luther "Lights Out" Smith will be in his first eight-round bout when he takes on Elvin "Koko" Sanchez of Paterson, NJ.  Smith (9-2, eight KO's) looks to bounce back from his four-round split decision loss to Lamont Capers on November 30th in Oxon Hill, MD.  Sanchez (8-3-1, six KO's) also competes in an eight-rounder for the first time and looks to build on a second-round TKO over Khalib Whitmore on August 11th in Philadelphia.  Sanchez will face a Beltway Boxer for the second time in his career.  Sanchez scored a third-round TKO over previously undefeated Venroy July in February of 2013 in Washington, DC.

Saturday, April 14th, Masonic Temple, Norfolk VA -- Baltimore super featherweight Mack "Papi" Allison IV will be a six-round contest against an opponent to be determined on this Ponytail Promotions card.  Allison (7-1-1, seven KO's) will look to bounce back from his first pro loss as he dropped a six-round unanimous decision to Reggie Barnett, Jr. on the last card at the Masonic Temple on December ninth.

Saturday, April 21st, Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY -- Former IBF Super Featherweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis of Baltimore looks for his second world title when he battles former WBA Featherweight titleholder Jesus Cuellar of Buenos Aires, Argentina for the vacant WBA Super Featherweight championship.  Davis (19-0, 18 KO's) won his last bout, an eighth-round KO over Francisco Fonseca on August 26th in Las Vegas.  However, Davis was stripped of his IBF crown for missing weight.  Cuellar (28-2, 21 KO's) will try to bounce back from losing his WBA title in a 12-round split decision loss to Abner Mares in December of 2016 in Los Angeles, CA.  The bout will be shown on Showtime.

Saturday, April 28th, Liacouras Center, Philadelphia, PA -- Laurel, MD super middleweight Demond "D'Best At It" Nicholson will take on Jesse "Hard Work" Hart of Philadelphia in a 10-round bout that will be nationally televised by ESPN.  Nicholson (18-2-1, 17 KO's) scored a bounce-back second-round TKO victory over Josue Obando on August 25th in Miami, OK.  This will be Nicholson's first 10-round encounter.  Hart (23-1, 19 KO's) also got back on the winning track after his first loss in his first world title bout in September by scoring a first-round TKO over Thomas Awimbono on February 3rd in Corpus Christi, TX.

We are also hearing that Baltimore, MD boxer Tyrieshia "Lady Tiga" Douglas (13-1, six KO's) has a world title bout scheduled in Mexico on April 28th.  When that is official, we will add that bout to this schedule.

Reeves Suffers 12th Round Knockout In Germany!

Baltimore, MD light heavyweight Travis "Seveer" Reeves's bid for the IBO Light Heavyweight title fell short Saturday night when he lost by 12th round TKO to Karo Murat of Kitzingen, Bayern, Germany in the main event of a card at the Inselparkhalle in Hamburg, Germany.

This is how Alexey Sukachev of Boxingscene.com described the action:

Both pugilists chose to exchange vicious, lazy yet rather powerful punches at a slow rate. It looked like Murat's power was dominant over Reeves but he also ate too many punches for him to punctuate his lead.

Reeves was determined and cautious at the same time, while Murat was inconsistent at close quarters but did well on his way out and also with his body punches. Rounds were mostly identical with both fighters rumbling it hard in a phone booth affair. Murat, meanwhile, looked dead tired but his visible fatigue didn't affect his punch rate as it was already rather low.

Murat caught his second wind in the championship rounds, while Reeves started to gas out. The American was wobbly on his legs at the conclusion of the eleventh. The twelfth started slowly as Reeves decided to turn back the heat. Murat was lethargic for the first two minutes but then exploded with a powerful right hand and a left hook. Reeves, clearly stunned, was pinned to the ropes and continued to eat leather before the referee has stepped in, maybe a bit too early.

The bout was stopped at approximately 40 seconds of the final round.  The loss breaks a 12-bout winning streak for Reeves, who was ranked eighth in the world by the IBF.  Reeves is now 15-3-2, seven KO's.  Murat, who is ranked in the top 15 by all four major governing bodies, improves to 32-3-1, 21 KOs.

Another Legendary Trainer, Dave Jacobs, Passes At 84!

Another legendary Beltway-based trainer has left us.  A man who worked with two of the greatest fighters in the history of the business.  Dave Jacobs passed away on Friday, March 23rd at the age of 84.

Mr. Jacobs was the first trainer of a 14-year-old boxer by the name of Sugar Ray Leonard.  Mr. Jacobs trained Leonard throughout his Olympic Gold Medal amateur days and was an assistant to Angelo Dundee (right) throughout the early years of Leonard's pro career including Leonard's first championship when he knocked out Wilfredo Benitez in the 15th round on November 30th, 1979 in Las Vegas, NV.  Mr. Jacobs would be in Leonard's corner for his first title defense when he scored a crushing fourth-round knockout over Davey "Boy" Green on March 31, 1980 in the fourth round in front of 12,000 partisan fans at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD.

Mr. Jacobs would leave Leonard's corner after Leonard lost the title to Roberto Duran on June 20th, 1980 in Montreal, Canada by 15-round unanimous decision.  However, Mr. Jacobs would return when Leonard defeated Marvelous Marvin Hagler by 12-round split decision on April 6, 1987 in Las Vegas.  He would leave the Leonard camp for good after Leonard fought to a draw in the rematch against Thomas Hearns in Las Vegas on June 12, 1989.

Later in his career, Mr. Jacobs would work with a returning Mike Tyson and was in the corner for his first bouts after being released from prison, including his championship wins over Frank Bruno and Bruce Seldon as well as his first loss to Evander Holyfield.

Mr. Jacobs leaves behind a wonderful family and many boxers, trainers and fans who will cherish his memory.

Personal note:  Dave Jacobs was a wonderful person.  His support of boxers throughout his life was fantastic.  I always enjoyed talking to him about the business and he definitely treated me well.  He is a true legend and will be missed by all.  Details on Mr. Jacobs's memorial service are forthcoming.

Former Amateur Standout Aujee 'Quick' Tyler Passes at 22!

We have received more bad news in the Beltway region.  BATB has learned that former Beltway amateur standout Aujee "Quick" Tyler has passed away at the age of 22.  According to reports, Tyler was shot during an incident in Southeast Washington, DC.

Tyler, who boxed out of Temple Hills, MD, was a two-time National Silver Gloves champion, a five-time Ringside Champion and won titles at the Junior Olympics and the National PAL Tournament.  In 2015 at the age of 16, Tyler signed a professional promotional contract with ProBox Management of Florida.  Because he could not fight in the United States because of his age, Tyler started his pro career in Mexico where he had a record of 3-1, three KO's.  Tyler last fought in November of 2016.

The story is still developing and we hope to have more information for you.  BATB sends its deepest condolences to Tyler's family.

Baltimore Boxing March 22nd Card Honors Wagner, Raises Funds For Davis!

There will be a very important amateur boxing card on Thursday, March 22nd at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.  Not for the boxing itself, but for what the card's purposes are.  The Baltimore Boxing card will pay tribute to legendary Ballroom Boxing promoter Scott Wagner as well as raise funds for the women known as the first lady of amateur boxing in the area, Brenda Davis.

Wagner, who passed away on February 16th at the age of 49, ran the highly successful Ballroom Boxing promotions that ran more than 70 successful pro shows over a 15-year period.  The series included many future and former world champions including Hasim Rahman, Al Cole, Orlin Norris, Kermit Cintron and Terence Crawford.  Wagner, who was a longtime friend of Smith, stopped promoting in 2009 and offered the family-owned Michael's Eighth Avenue to Baltimore Boxing Promotions.

“Scott was one of my closest friends and I was devastated by his untimely passing,” said Smith, who co-promoted with Wagner and also fought for him in 1996. “He ran one of the most successful promotions for more than a decade and did right by the fighters.

"Scott Wagner the person was even better than the promoter. He always helped other people and his experience assisted me in expanding Baltimore Boxing Promotions. I am forever thankful and will always have a place in my heart for Scott Wagner.”

The card will also be a fundraiser for Davis, the wife of legendary trainer Adrian Davis.  Ms. Davis, who was one of the first women to be a successful official in USA Amateur Boxing, has had a number of health complications that have severely impacted her.  All proceeds from the card will help cover healthcare costs.

The main event on the card will be a rematch for the East Coast Middleweight title.  Baltimore, MD's Deshawn Chase will battle the only man to defeat him, Omar Serrano of Ocean City, MD.  Also on the card, Tyrell Boyd of Baltimore Boxing takes on Tyler Langer of the Mack Lewis Gym.

For more information on tickets, call 410-375-9175.

Moore Wins Split Decision, Isley Wins Unanimously in Springfield, MA!

Alexandria, VA's Amelia Moore has won a split decision over former world championship silver medalist Kallie Harrington of Dublin, Ireland at the USA vs. Ireland dual meet tonight at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA.

In her first international competition at 141 pounds, Moore was able to walk down Harrington and avoid her hooks from the southpaw stance.  Moore landed solid straight right hands to earn the victory by a 2-1 score.

Fellow Alexandria boxer Troy Isley put on a dominating performance in winning a unanimous decision over Gerard French of Ireland in a 165-pound contest.  Isley was incredibly sharp and accurate throughout the bo. Isley lost a point for a low blow in the third round but that proved to be no factor in the contest.  This was Isley's second win of this tour.

Keyshawn Davis's bout seems to have been scratched from the card tonight.  No word on whether he will compete in the final leg of this competition which will be held on Wednesday, March 21st in Manchester, NH.

Former Beltway Boxer 'Magic' Ward Passes In New York Road Rage Incident!

More tragic news for the Beltway Boxing community.  And this comes with a very sad story.

On Monday, March 12th in Great Neck, Long Island, NY, a man who was a suspect in a road rage incident was shot and killed.  According to The Island Now who quotes an NYPD spokesman, Nassau County police shot and killed the man after he had been on a crime spree that  allegedly began in Bordentown, New Jersey, where he allegedly robbed an individual of a vehicle. He later allegedly robbed a 77-year-old man and fled in that man’s car, before striking and killing a 50-year-old man in Brooklyn two days later.

The suspect then allegedly attacked two men with a baseball bat in a road rage incident near the Equinox gym and then refused to drop the weapon when confronted by the officer, the police said.  Police opened fire on the suspect and killed him.

The suspect was a former Beltway Boxer named "Magic" Michael Ward, a super welterweight who fought out of Fort Washington, MD in the 1990's.  Ward was a promising boxer who was probably best known for, as a 19-year-old, knocking down hall of famer and Beltway legend Sugar Ray Leonard during a sparring session as Leonard was preparing to face Terry Norris.  According to published reports, Ward would also knock down another future champion, Meldrick Taylor, during a sparring session in Phoenix.

Ward (24-4, 19 KO's) had a solid career whose biggest victories came against Joe Gatti, the older brother of the late Arturo Gatti (a six round unanimous decision in 1990 in Atlantic City, NJ) and a first-round TKO of Beltway legend Robert "Boo Boo" Sawyer in 1991.

The bout people in the Beltway area wanted to make during the early-to-mid 90's was between Ward and the equally-rising Derrell "Too Sweet" Coley but the bout never materialized.  After their careers were over, the two rivals became good friends.

Michael Ward was 46 years old.  BATB sends its deepest condolences to his loved ones.

Big bout, in fact, the biggest of his career coming up for Baltimore, MD light heavyweight Travis "Seveer" Reeves.  The 2016 Tri-Beltway Boxing Prospect Of The Year and USBO Light Heavyweight champion will challenge for the vacant IBO World Light Heavyweight championship against Karo Murat of Bayern, Germany on Saturday, March 24th at the Inselparkhalle in Hamburg, Germany.

Reeves (15-2-2, seven KO's) has won 12 straight bouts including winning the USBO championship in a second-round TKO over Aaron Quattrocchi in December of 2016 in Baltimore. In his last outing, Reeves won by four-round disqualification over Josue Obando on June 17th in Baltimore.

Murat (31-3-1, 20 KO's) is the current IBF International Light Heavyweight and European Boxing Union Light Heavyweight champion who won the EBU title in his last bout, an 11th-round TKO over previously undefeated Dominic Boesel on July 1st in Dresden, Germany.  Murat once challenged for the IBF World Light Heavyweight title dropping a 12-round unanimous decision to Bernard Hopkins in December of 2013 in Atlantic City, NJ.

Legendary Beltway Trainers Gilbert, Hughes Pass Away!

The Beltway Boxing community has lost two of its most legendary figures.  Long-time trainers Frank Gilbert and Eugene "Thunder" Hughes passed away on Monday, March 12th.  We will have a full obituary on both men as soon as information comes to us.  However, we felt we needed to get the word out on the passing of these two great local figures.

Mr. Gilbert was the head trainer at the Loch Raven Boxing Club in Baltimore for many years, training popular local boxers like Eddie Van Kirk, Tony Cygan, Chuck Sturm and Jed Phipps.  Gilbert was also a past president of the South Atlantic Association of USA Boxing and of Ring 101.

Mr. Hughes was a fixture in DC through his work at the Midtown Youth Academy.  Hughes trained the likes of Jasper "Baby Ray" Goddard and Lisa Foster Cohen, who became a three-time world champion.

I was privileged to know both of these wonderful men.  They influenced numerous boxers as well as numerous men and women throughout the cities they represented.  They were also great influences on me and enjoyed the many times I had the opportunity to talk with them.  They were both great men and will truly be missed.

I have been told that a memorial service for Mr. Gilbert will be held sometime during the summer.  No word yet on a service for Mr. Hughes.  Again, we will be updating as information comes in.

In the later stages of the contest, Reed did a better job of cutting the ring off and getting inside Barboza's reach to land shots.  However, Reed lost too many rounds early on the scorecards.  Reed lost the bout by scores of 97-93 (twice) and 96-94.

Reed has now lost two straight contests and is now 23-2, 12 KO's.  Barboza remains undefeated and is now 18-0, six KO's.

Lockett Faces Ajamu March 10th In Atlantic City!

Two well-travelled boxers will square off in a six-round cruiserweight contest on Saturday, March 10th at the Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ.

Beltway veteran Willis "The Prophet" Lockett of Takoma Park, MD will take on Camden, NJ's Prince Badi Ajamu.  These two boxers have competed a combined 75 times and have a combined age of 87 years.

The 41-year-old Lockett (15-22-6, five KO's) has lost three of his last four including a fifth-round TKO defeat to Frederic Julan on November 18th at the Claridge.  Over his career ,which began in 2001, Lockett has fought fellow locals Keith Holmes, Willie Williams, Henry Mayes and Maxell Taylor as well as former prospects Dante Craig, Jerson Ravelo, Chuck Mussachio as well as current prospect Jerry Forrest.

The 46-year-old Ajamu (28-3-1, 15 KO's) also started his pro career in 2001 and would have even more bouts on his record if he did not take an eight-year hiatus from boxing from 2009-2017.  Ajamu is a former NABO and Continental Americas Light heavyweight champion whose biggest bout came in a loss to recently retired legend Roy Jones, Jr.   Ajamu lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Jones in July of 2006 in Boise, ID.  In his last outing, Ajamu won an eight-round unanimous decision over Edgar Perez on August 5th at the Claridge.

Two accomplished Beltway Boxers will be in big world title bouts in April.  On Saturday, April 7th, IBF Junior Middleweight champion "Swift" Jarrett Hurd of Accokeek, MD will put his title on the line against WBA Super World Super Welterweight champion "The American Dream" Erislandy Lara of Houston, TX by way of Guantanamo, Cuba in a unification bout at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

Hurd, the two-time Beltway Boxer of the Year, is undefeated at 21-0, 15 KO's.  Hurd has stopped his last seven opponents, including a 10th-round stoppage of former world champion Austin Trout in his last outing (his first title defense) on October 14th in Brooklyn, NY.   Lara (25-2-2, 14 KO's) made the fifth defense of his title on the same October 14th card, winning a 12-round unanimous decision over Terrell Gausha.

Two weeks later on Saturday, April 21st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, undefeated former IBF Super Featherweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis of Baltimore, MD will take on former WBA Featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar of Buenos Aires, Argentina for the vacant WBA Super Featherweight title.  Davis (19-0, 18 KO's)  scored an eighth-round TKO over Francisco Fonseca on August 26 in Las Vegas.  However, Davis lost his title on the scales because he came in overweight.  Cuellar (28-2, 21 KO's) will look to bounce back from dropping his WBA title in a 12-round split decision loss to Abner Mares in December of 2016 in Los Angeles, CA.  Cuellar has not fought since that bout.
