Marion Barry, Champion For Boxing In DC, Passes at 78!

As many in the Beltway region are saddened at the announcement of the passing of Ward 8 Councilmember and former DC Mayor Marion S. Barry, Jr., so too are many in the local boxing scene.

Quietly and not with a lot of fanfare, Mr. Barry did a lot to elevate the boxing scene in Washington, DC.  Under his tenure as mayor, Barry, a big boxing fan, inaugurated the Mayor's Cup amateur boxing tournament in 1985 and held for many years at Howard University's Burr Gymnasium.  A number of local and national boxers became very prominent names through that tournament.

Barry appointed the first woman to head the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission -- his future wife, Cora Masters Barry.  Mrs. Barry served on the commission from 1979 to 1987.  Although her tenure was sometimes dubious, it was a time where championship bouts started coming to DC on a more regular basis.

Also during the Barry Administration, new places, new exceptional places to hold boxing events started to appear.  Before, there was only the DC Armory but Marion Barry helped bring us the original Washington Convention Center and then the MCI (now Verizon) Center to hold some legendary bouts over the years.

At the heart, Barry was a big fan of the sport and did all he could to elevate boxing in the nation's capital.  As late as this past September, Barry was honored alongside DC's legendary boxing champions as he promoted his autobiography.

Standing and watching the event at the legendary Ben's Chili Bowl, I could only think of how fitting that was.  As the boxers who represented DC as champions, no one fought harder for Washington, DC and its prominence than Marion Barry.  BATB sends our deepest condolences.

BATB Needs Your Help For Online Project!

In the nine years of writing Boxing Along The Beltway, I have not asked a lot from my readers.  People have come up to me over the years and asked to sponsor my blog and nothing has really come out of that and I have not pushed for that.

However, I am on the verge of entering a new venture associated with the blog that will need your help to succeed.

In the very near future, I will be hosting the Boxing Along The Beltway radio show.  The plan is to have a weekly series with guests and call-in.  The show will be heard on the WBGR Sports Network (www.wbgrsports.com).  We are still working on the details on when the show will air.

For this venture to work, I will need sponsors to cover the price of putting the show on the air.  So, if you are willing to sponsor the show or know someone who is, please email me at beltwayboxing@hotmail.com and either I or the folks at WBGR will get back in touch with you with details.

I thank you in advance and hope you will be listening.

Jeter Wins Majority Decision Over Lange!

In what was one of the best Beltway bouts of 2014, Tony Jeter has defeated Jimmy Lange by a 10-round majority decision to win the vacant NABA USA Middleweight title.

This was a brutal fight, in many ways like the first bout.  However, there were some subtle differences.  Jeter used a great series of uppercuts and body shots to establish his gameplan.  However, Lange moved better laterally in the rematch.

Jeter was very effective with his inside attack and kept Lange off balance.  In the middle rounds, Lange came back strong and established his jab well.  However, Jeter closed the show with nice combinations to win the bout.

Judge Joe Cooper saw the draw at 95-95.  That was overruled by Brian Costello saw the bout at 97-93 and Mark D'Atillio who saw the bout 99-91 for Jeter, who is now 18-4-1, 12 KO's.  Lange falls to 38-6-2, 25 KO's.  Good night from the Patriot Center!

Nelson Successfully Defends WIBA Title With Unanimous Decision!

Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson has successfully defended her WIBA Welterweight title with a 10-round unanimous decision over a very game Victoria Cisneros.

Nelson landed great combinations to the head and body of Cisneros, who continued to charge in close.  At times, Cisneros went to a neutral corner and challenged Nelson to come from center ring to fight but Nelson would have none of that.

All three judges scored a shutout (100-90) for Nelson who remains undefeated at 13-0-3, one KO and defends her title for the fifth time, four of those defenses coming this year. Cisneros falls to 11-16-2, four KO's.

Now, the main event. Jeter vs. Lange II.

Brown Wins Unanimous Decision!

Thomas Brown wins a relatively easy six-round unanimous decision over Jonathan Reid.

Brown fought a very disciplined contest following his corner's instructions to the letter.  Brown landed crisp head and body shots and landed solid uppercuts throughout the contest.

One judge scored three 10-8 rounds for Brown despite no knockdowns.  That score was 60-51.  Two other judges scored the bout 60-54 for Brown who raises his record to 16-4-2, nine KO's.  Reid drops to 35-16, nine KO's.

Intermission followed by our co-feature for the WIBA and now, the vacant UBF Welterweight titles. WIBA champ Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson defends against Victoria "La Reina De Guerra" Cisneros of Albuquerque, NM.  Ten two-minute rounds.

Billups Scores Third-Round TKO!

Seth Billups had an easy night as he stopped a very stoic and somewhat immobile Sean Lockhart.

Billups stayed on the outside and landed easy punches to Lockhart's head and body.  Lockhart stayed in center ring and did nothing in defense.  Billups knocked down Lockhart three times, once in each round, before the bout was stopped at 2:04 of the third.

Billups remains undefeated at 5-0, four KO's.  Lockhart is 5-25-2, two KO's.

Next: Jonathan "Reid Dawg" Reid of Nashville, TN (35-15, nine KO's) battles Thomas Brown of York, SC (15-4-2, nine KO's). Six rounds, super middleweights.

Ferhadi Stops Noriega At The End of Three!

Devar Ferhadi used a multitude of crushing body shots to defeat Jess Noriega.

Noriega started very strong and pressured Ferhadi with hard punches to the head.  However, Ferhadi went to his bread and butter, the body shot and that turned things completely in his favor.

Noriega fought back valiantly but Ferhadi's body attack set up nice combinations to the head.  At the end of the third round, the Noriega corner retired.

Ferhadi is now 4-0, three KO's.  Noriega falls to 3-12, three KO's.

Next up: Seth "Killer B" Billups of Ashburn, VA (4-0, three KO's) battles Sean Lockhart of Columbia, MD (5-24-2, two KO's).  Four rounds, junior welterweights.

Balogun Knocks Out Womack In First!

Two fights, two first-round knockouts.  Mike "Silverback" Balogun knocks out Percy Womack at 1:20.  Balogun landed two heavy left hands to drop Womack twice.  Womack could not beat referee Bill Clancy's count.

Balogun is now 2-0, two KO's while Womack loses his pro debut.

Next:  Devar "The Warrior" Ferhadi of Frederick, MD takes on Jess "Thunder" Noriega of Lynchburg, VA.

Terry Makes Short Work Of Bartlett!

Our first contest ends quickly as Ray Terry stops Kevin Bartlett at 2:10 of the first round.

Terry simply overwhelmed Bartlett and two separate flurries sent Bartlett to his knees twice before the bout was stopped.

Terry is now 2-0, two KO's.  Bartlett is 0-5.

Up next: heavyweight Mike Balogun of Upper Marlboro, MD (1-0, one KO) taking on Percy Womack who debuts out of Danville, VA.

Good Evening From The Patriot Center!

Hi again from the campus of George Mason University and the Patriot Center for the card that features the rematch between Tony Jeter and Jimmy Lange.

In our poll 68 people think Lange will win while 58 chose Jeter.  Six people think this bout will end in a draw.

We are getting ready for our first contest as "Sugar" Ray Terry of Lynchburg, VA (1-0, one KO) battles Kevin Bartlett of Eden, NC (0-4).  Four rounds, super middleweights.

A. Douglas Wins At Fight Night!

Thursday night was a good night for the Douglas family.  Just before Tyrieshia Douglas captured the WIBA Bantamweight title in Baltimore, brother Antoine "Action" Douglas was victorious at the Fight Night charity boxing card at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC.

Douglas, a middleweight from Burke, VA, defeated Don Mouton of Houston, TX by six-round unanimous decision winning by shutout (60-54) on all three scorecards.  Douglas remains undefeated with a record of 16-0-1, 10 KO's while Mouton drops to 14-9-1, 12 KO's.

Douglas Captures WIBA Title; Stevenson Wins In First-Round!

Tyrieshia Douglas captured the vacant WIBA Bantamweight title tonight at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD winning a 10-round unanimous decision over a very game Christina "Bullet" Ruiz of San Antonio, TX.

Douglas controlled the early portion of the bout with solid right jabs and straight left hands. Douglas showed a lot of patience as she did not rush in to go for the knockout.  At times, Ruiz landed some shots but Douglas did not seem to be in any real danger.

Ruiz fought valiantly, especially in the eighth round when she suffered a nasty gash along her right eye as a result of an unintentional headbutt, according to referee Bill Clancy.

Douglas won by scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92 and remains undefeated at 8-0, three KO's. Douglas is now the fifth female Beltway Boxer to win a world title, joining Isra Girgrah Wynn, Lisa Foster Cohen, Tori Nelson and Jennifer Salinas. Ruiz's record evens at 7-7-3, four KO's.

In the co-feature, James Stevenson stopped Larry Ventus at 2:09 of the first round.  Stevenson looked strong as he bounced back from the loss to Sammy Vazquez.  Stevenson dropped Ventus twice en route to the victory.

Stevenson is now 22-1, 15 KO's while Ventus is 6-8-1, three KO's.

BATB talked to the brand new WIBA champion after the contest.

And we also have the full recap on the Post-Fight Show.

Golub Gets First-Round TKO!

We have had our fourth straight first-round stoppage of the night here in Baltimore as Ivan "The Volk" Golub stops Tyeson Harrison at 2:09.

Golub advanced on Harrison throughout the round landing hard, straight shots.  Harrison went down three times before referee Bill Clancy stopped the contest.

Golub is now 8-0, two KO's while Harrison loses for the first time and he is 2-1, one KO.

Co-feature is next: James "Keep 'Em Sleepin'" Stevenson of Baltimore (21-1, 14 KO's) faces Larry Ventus of Detroit, MI (6-7-1, three KO's) in a six-round junior welterweight bout.

Ritter Stops Mosley In One!

Kwame Ritter made a solid pro debut as he stopped Devon Mosley at 2:19 of the first round.

Ritter landed solid shots to knock Mosley down.  Mosley could not beat referee Braslow's 10-count.

Mosley is now 0-2-1.

We move into the six-round bouts as Ivan Golub of Brooklyn, NY (7-0, two KO's) takes on Tyeson Harrison of Greensboro, NC (2-0, one KO).

Hawkins Has Easy Pro Debut!

It didn't take long and it didn't take much for Malik "Iceman" Hawkins to win his pro debut over Terrell Coles.

Hawkins landed a crushing body shot seconds into the contest that made Cole's crumple to the canvas.  Referee Dave Braslow stopped the contest at just 16 seconds and Coles had to be taken from the ring on a stretcher.

Coles is now 0-2.

Another pro debut coming up as heavyweight Kwame Ritter of Columbia, MD takes on DC's Devon Mosley.  Another four-rounder.

Baranchyk Blasts Haney In One!

Ivan Baranchyk needed just 45 seconds to knock out Christopher Haney.

Baranchyk dropped Haney with a straight right early in the round then crushed Haney with a powerful counter left hook that made Haney crash to the canvas. Referee Kenny Chevalier stopped the contest immediately.

Baranchyk is now 3-0-1, three KO's.  Haney is 0-2.

Heading to the ring, Baltimore's Malik Hawkins making his long-awaited pro debut against Terrell Coles of Bedford, VA. (0-1) Four rounds, junior middleweights.

McDonald Wins Split Decision!

In our first pro contest here in Baltimore, Stephon "Flash" McDonald has won a four-round split decision over Sydney McCow.

Tough bout for both men as each had their moments and also had prolonged moments of inactivity. McDonald had a flurry late in the contest that may have tipped the bout in his favor.

Judges John Gradowski and Bill Clancy scored the bout 39-37 for McDonald while Don Risher saw the same score for McCow.

McDonald remains undefeated at 4-0, two KO's while McCow is 0-2.

Up next, Ivan Baranchyk of Brooklyn, NY (2-0-1, two KO's) faces Christopher Haney of Mt. Prospect, IL (0-1).  A junior welterweight four-round bout.

Good Evening From Downtown Charm City!

Hi everyone from the Royal Farms Arena in downtown Baltimore, MD for the initial ShawStyle Promotions card.  The amateur portion of the card is underway.  Unfortunately, I didn't get a lineup of who is competing on this portion of the card.

The reason is the minor development on this card.  I am serving as the supervisor for the WIBA Bantamweight title bout between Tyrieshia Douglas and Christina Ruiz.  I have been in meetings throughout the evening.

I hope to get results on the amateur portion of the card later on.  I will be back during the pro portion.

In what amounted to a glorified session for her title defense next Saturday, Tori Nelson won an easy four-round unanimous decision over Lucretia Meacham.

Nelson landed crisp shots to Meacham's head and body and was not in danger of getting hit back.  All three judges scored the bout 40-36 for Nelson who is now 12-0-3, one KO and can fully focus on her WIBA Welterweight title defense against Victoria Cisneros on November 15 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.

St. Vil And Curry Battle To Six-Round Draw!

Details on Nicholson, Sigmon Losses In Chicago!

We finally have details of the two losses suffered by Beltway Boxers Demond Nicholson and Scott Sigmon at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, IL on November 1.

Craig Wick of Fightnews.com was ringside and reported on the contests.  First, Nicholson's sixth round TKO loss to Lekan Byfield of Augusta, GA.

"The first three rounds were not kind to Byfield, as he was outboxed in round one, knocked down in round two, and picked apart in round three. The fight changed dramatically in round four, when Byfield landed a huge right hand that dropped Nicholson on the seat of his pants. The referee ruled it a slip but it was obvious that Nicholson’s legs now had a mind of their own. In round five, Nicholson boxed from the outside and it appeared as if the underdog’s advantage had passed. Undeterred, Byfiel d marched forward in round six and found another big right hand that landed to the head of Nicholson, dropping him hard in a neutral corner. Beating the count, it was apparent that he was spent goods, and this was reaffirmed seconds later when a combination dropped him again, this time in his own corner. The Laurel, Maryland fighter bravely beat the count, however the contest was wisely waved off at the 1:42 mark."

Nicholson suffers his first pro loss and he is 10-1, 10 KO's.  Byfield is now 7-6-2 and scores his first pro knockout.

Sigmon was stopped by Caleb Truax of Osseo, MN in the eighth round.

"Truax’s blueprint was established early on, as he effectively raked Sigmon with heavy hooks to the body and solid right hands to the head. Sigmon fought back gamely, however other than an occasional right hand he was rarely in the fight. Truax continued committing to the body, but heavy shots upstairs had the ringside physician looking on with concern as round seven began. Early in the round, the ringside physician was again called up to inspect Sigmon’s eyes, with both appearing cut and beginning to swell. Action was allowed to resume however, and Truax resumed breaking down Sigmon, strafing him with left hooks and straight right hands to the head. After Sigmon was curiously deducted a point for holding in round eight, the end came moments later when Truax backed him up against the ropes and landed several jarring combinations, prompting the referee to intervene. Time of the stoppage was 1:42 of round eight."

Sigmon said on social media that he suffered broken ribs early in the contest.  Sigmon is now 24-6-1, 13 KO's while Truax is 25-1-2, 15 KO's.

Results From Constitution Hall!

There were a number of solid knockout performances during the All-In Entertainment card Saturday night at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC.

In the main event, DC welterweight Dusty Hernandez Harrison thrilled the hometown crowd by scoring a crushing first-round knockout over Michael Clark of Columbus, OH.  Harrison used a solid jab to set up a right that caught Clark on the top of the head and sent him tumbling backward to the canvas.  Clark could not beat referee Joe Cooper's count and the bout was stopped at 1:40.

Harrison is now 24-0, 13 KO's while Clark falls to 44-12-1, 18 KO's.

In the co-feature, junior middleweight "Swift" Jarrett Hurd of Accokeek, MD landed a solid right hand of his own to knockout out Terry Cade of Aiken, SC in the first round.  Much like Harrison, Hurd used patience and a solid left jab to set up a brutal right hand that sent Cade to the canvas with his right leg buckled underneath him Referee Mark D'Atillio counted to 10 and the bout was over at 2:39.

Hurd remains undefeated at 13-0, eight KO's while Cade drops to 4-7-1, two KO's.

Also on the card, "The Pride of Alexandria" Brandon Quarles used a series of crushing body shots to stop Dennis Sharpe of Bayonne, NJ at 2:54 of the fourth round.  Quarles showed solid power as he repeatedly went to Sharpe's body.  Sharpe took a knee three times before the contest was halted by referee Mark D'Atillio.

Quarles is now 14-3-1, six KO's while Sharpe drops to 17-15-3, four KO's.

In heavyweight action, Laurel, MD's "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae eeked out a six-round majority decision over Grover Young of Memphis, TN.  McRae started the bout by using his jab to keep Young away.  However, Young managed to get inside and work on McRae to the body and the head.  In the second half of the bout, McRae managed to do enough damage to Young inside to pull out the bout.

Judge Wayne Smith saw the draw at 57-57 but he was overruled by judges Manuel Vinson and Lloyd Scaife who scored the bout 59-55 and 58-56 respectively.

McRae raises his record to 15-3, eight KO's while Young drops to 8-14, five KO's.

Rookie lightweight Mykal "The Professor" Fox of Forestville, MD looked dominant in a four-round unanimous decision win over veteran Sean Lockhart of Columbia, SC.  Fox used a powerful jab and followed up with right hands to keep Lockhart at bay.  Lockhart managed to avoid getting knocked down in the contest but all three judges (Scaife, Vinson and Smith) scored the bout 40-35.

Fox remains undefeated at 4-0, one KO.  Lockhart's record falls to 5-24-2, two KO's.

DC lightweight Joshua "Dynamite" Davis stopped John Wampash of Quito, Ecuador at 55 seconds of the third round.  Davis started slowly but managed to break Wampash down throughout the contest, finally sealing the deal in the third round with a wicked body shot that sent Wampash to the canvas to stay.

Davis is 8-1, four KO's while Wampash is 1-9-3, one KO.

The opening contest saw Emanuel "Jab" Johnson of Brandywine, MD stop the debuting Patrick Chaffin of Memphis, TN in the first round.  Johnson overwhelmed Chaffin throughout the short contest as Chaffin could not throw any punches back.  The bout was stopped by referee Vic DeWysocki at 1:39.  Johnson is now 3-0 with his first pro knockout.

Numerous luminaries were in attendance at the card including DC Mayor Vincent Gray and several members of the DC City Council. Among the boxing stars in attendance was heavyweight contender Bryant "Bye-Bye" Jennings.  DC heavyweight Tony "The Tiger" Thompson provided color commentary on the GoFightLive internet broadcast with Marc Abrams and myself.

Here is the Post-Fight Wrap-Up with "The Fight Doctor" Jerome Spears and myself.
