Sigmon, McCalla Gain Victories in North Carolina!

Two Beltway Boxers won unanimous decisions in Raleigh, NC on Friday.  Bedford, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon successfully defended his WBC USNBC Super Middleweight title with a 10-round decision over Carlton Holland of Durham, NC.  Sigmon won by 98-92 on all three judges's scorecards.  This was a rematch of a bout Sigmon won over Holland on May 8, 2010 in Bedford.

This was Sigmon's second defense of his title, and his sixth straight victory and 14th in his last sixteen.  The win raises his record to 22-3, 12 KO's.  Holland is now 18-13-1, nine KO's.

Also on the card, Randallstown, MD junior middleweight Cecil McCalla remained undefeated with a six-round unanimous decision over Kevin "Dog Pound" Carter of Winston-Salem, NC.  This was McCalla's first bout since May 21 and he is now 14-0, five KO's.  Carter falls to 11-62-1, three KO's.

Corley Bout In St. Maarten Cancelled Because of Carnival; Harrison Bout Changed in Mississippi!

ProAm Fight Talk is reporting that DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley's bout slated for April 7 in St. Maarten has been cancelled because the island nation wants to focus on the upcoming Carnival Celebration, so the promoter cancelled the event.

There is another card slated for St. Maarten on June 30 (scheduled to include another Beltway Boxer, Venroy July), but Corley told PAFT's Juan Marshall that the only way he will go back there is if they doubled the money and paid him up front.

Another bout slated for April 7 has been altered.  "The Beltway Boricua" Dusty Harrison will face a new opponent in his four-rounder in Southaven, MS.  Reggie Nash is out and Anthony Bowman of Jackson, TN is in.  Bowman (9-39-2, two KO's) is looking to break a 12-bout losing streak.  Bowman hasn't fought since being knocked out by Hastings Bwalya in November of 2010.

'Sugar Poo' Buchanan Makes Return In North Dakota March 31!

Capitol Heights, MD light heavyweight Henry "Sugar Poo" Buchanan returns to the ring for the first time since August 2010 to face "The Sioux Warrior" Shawn Hawk on Saturday, March 31 at the 4 Bears Casino and Lodge in New Town, North Dakota.  The bout is slated for 10 rounds.

Buchanan (20-2, 13 KO's) has not fought since his ninth-round TKO over Bobby Jordan on August 14, 2010 in Norfolk, VA.  Buchanan has won three straight since his February 2009 loss to Andre Ward for the NABO Super Middleweight title.

Hawk (22-1-1, 17 KO's) fights out of Atlantic City, NJ but is originally from Sioux Falls, SD.  Hawk has won four in a row including a 10-round split decision over Otis Griffin on October 20 in Worley, ID.  Hawk survived a knockdown to win the bout.

'Awesome April of Beltway Boxing' Begins April 7!

Over the past six years of Boxing Along the Beltway, there has been a noticeable pattern -- April is typically one of the busiest months for boxing and boxers of the year.  That trend holds true in 2012, where there will be a number of Beltway Boxers who will be involved in bouts throughout the month.

Unfortunately, it must be pointed out, that most of the bouts will take place outside the area, but still many of them will be in either driving distance or can be seen via television.  Here's what we have (so far) in the 2012 edition of the "Awesome April of Beltway Boxing." (all dates and bouts can change without notice)

Saturday, April 7 -- L.B. Scott Auditorium St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles -- Former WBO and current NABF Junior Welterweight champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley will battle for the vacant IBO title against Luis Ernesto Jose.  The matchmaker on this card is a familiar name -- "The Boxing Diva" Renee Aiken.

Saturday, April 7 -- DeSoto Civic Center, Southaven, MS -- "The Beltway Boricua" Dusty Harrison takes on .Anthony Bowman on the James Toney-Bobby Gunn card.

Friday, April 13 -- Waldorf Jaycees Community Center, Waldorf, MD -- Regional Golden Gloves Championships.

Saturday, April 14 -- Bally's Event Center, Atlantic City, NJ -- Cambridge, MD junior welterweight Dontre King (6-9, two KO's) tries to improve on his three-bout winning streak when he faces undefeated Naim Nelson (5-0) of Philadelphia, PA.

Wednesday, April 18 -- Robert Treat Hotel, Newark, NJ -- "The Berlin Bomber" Joshua Snyder returns to action to face Richard Pierson in an eight-round main event.  Also, DC-based heavyweight Maurice "Freight Train" Byarm is scheduled to return on that card.

Friday, April 20 -- National Guard Armory, Philadelphia, PA -- Undefeated Suitland, MD cruiserweight  Venroy "Hard Work" July will be in a six-round contest against Pedro Martinez.

Friday, April 20 -- Beau Rivage Resort and Casino, Biloxi, MS -- Salisbury, MD middleweight Fernando  Guerrero returns against an opponent TBA in an eight-round contest.

Saturday, April 21 -- Don Haskins Convention Center, El Paso, Texas -- Gary Russell, Jr. in a Showtime-televised eight-round bout against Dat Nguyen.  Veteran DC junior welterweight Daniel Attah has been added to the non-televised undercard.  Attah (26-9-1, nine KO's) will take on undefeated Luis Ramos, Jr. (21-0, nine KO's) in a 10-round contest.  Attah last fought on the Lamont Peterson-Amir Khan undercard on December 10 in DC and lost an eight-round unanimous decision to Anthony Peterson.

Saturday, April 28 -- Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, NJ -- Seth Mitchell in a 10-round HBO-televised bout against Chazz Witherspoon.

Saturday, April 29 -- Mesquite, NV -- National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions begin.

May Ring Magazine Has Beltway Flavor!

The May issue of the "Bible of Boxing"-- The Ring has a distinct Beltway flavor. This is the Ring's annual awards issue and although only one Beltway Boxer won an award, there are a few stories with a Beltway flavor.

As The Ring announced late in 2011, Gary Russell, Jr. was chosen as the Prospect of the Year beating out the likes of Luis Del Valle and Demetrius Andrade. Russell's advisor, Al Haymon, was named the Manager of the Year as he has done an outstanding job in guiding the careers of boxers like Floyd Mayweather, Andre Berto, Chris Arreola and Adrien Broner.

Peterson Brothers trainer Barry Hunter was among the runners-up in the Trainer of the Year category alongside the likes of Freddie Roach, Ann Wolfe and Virgil Hunter (no relation). The winner of Robert Garcia, the trainer of Brandon Rios and Nonito Donaire. Also, the Lamont Peterson-Amir Khan bout was among the runners-up for Fight of the Year, losing to the brawl between Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto.

The issue also has a profile on undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth Mitchell.

Also, there is a new column called "Playlist" that talks about boxers and their favorite music. Two Beltway Boxing legends are featured in this month's column. Hall of Famer Sugar Ray Leonard lists just two songs -- Leave Me Alone by Michael Jackson and Bobby Brown's My Prerogative. Soon-to-be Hall of Famer Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson also chose a Jackson song (Beat It) but stayed true to his DC roots by listing Body Snatchers by Rare Essence. Johnson also listed James Brown's Papa Don't Take No Mess and The Man Right 'Chea by Mystikal.

'Beltway Boricua' Harrison Heads to Mississippi April 7!

BATB has learned that undefeated DC welterweight "The Beltway Boricua" Dusty Harrison will be fighting on the James Toney-Bobby Gunn undercard on Saturday, April 7 at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Mississippi. No word yet on his opponent.

This is the same location that the 17-year-old (4-0, two KO's) made his pro debut in June of 2011.

This is just one of a number of bouts featuring Beltway Boxers in the month of April. We will reveal the 2012 edition of the "Awesome April of Beltway Boxing" by the end of the week.

THIS JUST IN:  BATB has learned that Harrison will take on Reggie "Two-Gun" Nash of Grand Rapids, MI in a four-round contest.  Nash (10-29-1, two KO's) has fought the likes of Vernon Paris, Grady Brewer and the Beltway's own Bayan Jargal.

Thompson Heads To Switzerland For Championship Rematch July 7!

ESPN.com is reporting that DC heavyweight Tony "The Tiger" Thompson will travel to Bern, Switzerland for a rematch with heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko on July 7. Terms of the signing were not disclosed.  The location will be the Stade de Suisse in Bern.

The deal cancels an IBF purse bid that was slated for today. If the purse bid had taken place today, Klitschko would have received 85 percent of the winning bid with Thompson getting 15 percent.

Thompson (36-2, 24 KO's) faced Klitschko (57-3, 50 KO's) in Hamburg, Germany on July 12, 2008 despite having a torn meniscus in his knee. Thompson was stopped in the 11th round. Since that loss, Thompson has won five straight bouts, all by knockout. Thompson is Klitschko's mandatory challenger.

Thompson's promoter, Dan Goossen, was hoping to make a deal that would bring the bout here to DC, but ESPN.com says Klitschko was not interested because there would be more money in Europe.

Most likely, the bout will be televised on the EPIX cable network which has televised previous defenses by Klitschko and his brother, Vitali.

Bert Randolph Sugar, Boxing Expert and Native Washingtonian, Passes at 75!

The boxing world, indeed the sports world has lost one of its true historians and I have lost quite a friend.

Legendary writer Bert Randolph Sugar passed away today in New York at the age of 75. Sugar passed away from cardiac arrest and was suffering from lung cancer. He had family nearby.

To say that Sugar was an expert on the history of boxing and was a great ambassador for the sport is an understatement. He was constantly sought after for his views on boxing, past and present. He wrote numerous books on the sport like Bert Sugar: on Boxing and 100 Years of Boxing. He also wrote books on other sports like baseball (Bert Sugar's Baseball Hall of Fame: A Living History of America's Greatest Game) and he co-wrote a Complete Idiot's Guide to Pro Wrestling with legendary manager Captain Lou Albano) Sugar wrote 80 books in all.

What many people along the Beltway may not know is that Sugar was a native of Washington, DC born on June 7, 1937. He attended Wilson Senior High School here in town and also graduated from the University of Maryland where he was a member of the university's boxing team. He was a staunch supporter of the University's boxing club attending many of their events.

Personally, Bert was one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet in a business where there are so many nice people. I first met Sugar almost 20 years ago at the Simon Brown-Tyrone Trice rematch at the DC Armory in April of 1990. We talked briefly during the event, but afterwards, my father and I gave Bert and a mutual friend of ours a ride to his hotel. What I remember most about that ride was listening to the radio (WTOP) and they ran a story about a magician who did magic tricks over the radio. Sugar thought it was just incredible and had everyone in the car cracking up over his comments about the story.

I interviewed Bert numerous times over the years. I had a great interview with him in 1995 at my first Fight Night event at the Washington Hilton Hotel and Towers -- the year Muhammad Ali was a special guest. Sugar came down to this area numerous times to come to Ballroom Boxing in Glen Burnie, in which he said it was the best club show in the country.

The last time I saw Bert was when the University of Maryland hosted the National Collegiate Boxing Championships in April of 2009. I had a chance to interview both Bert and sports talk show host and Washington Examiner columnist Thom Loverro, who like me, was a relative newbie to collegiate boxing. It was a great interview with a lot of fun and laughter -- just like the man himself.

Bert Randolph Sugar will always be known for his fedora, his cigar and his knowledge. Bert Randolph Sugar will also be known for being a true original who left a legacy that all of us who write about this sport will find hard to follow.

Beltway Boxing Legends Sitting Together!

While at the Golden Gloves finals tonight at the Waldorf Jaycees, I saw these three men sitting together. These three men along with people like Adrian Davis, Juice Gatling and others, set the standard for training some of our greatest Beltway Boxers and also some of the great trainers that have followed behind them. When I saw them sitting together, I knew I had to have a photo of them.

From left to right -- Junious Hinton (Books and Boxing), Eugene Hughes (Midtown Youth Academy) and Dave Jacobs (a former trainer of Sugar Ray Leonard and others) Indeed, they are true legends!

Kelly Scores RSC in Final Championship Bout!

Much like he ended the semi-finals last week at Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center, Danny Kelly scored a blistering RSC-2 over Sean Elam to win the 201+ championship title.

Congratulations to No Excuse who won the team trophy for the second straight year.

That will do it for tonight! The winners here will be back in action on Friday, April 13 right here at the Waldorf Jaycees starting at 8 PM. No post-fight tonight as it would seem redundant. Good night from Waldorf!

Sportsmanship Awards Go To:

Congratulations to the following boxers for winning Sportsmanship Awards for their work at the Washington Golden Gloves:

Stacey Selby (Langdon)

Erick Tudor (Books and Boxing)

Tavon Marshall (Upton)

Taylor Ross (New Life)

Odom Wins 178-Pound Title!

We almost had a major upset in the 178-pound division as Antwan Ward of Sugar Ray Leonard was announced as the winner over Jerry Odom of No Excuse. But there was a mistake in the announcement and Odom was indeed the winner. Great bout by both men.

Our final bout of the evening is in the ring -- the 201 pound+ championship -- Danny Kelly of Headbangers vs. Sean Elam of RPH Academy.

Another Ballard-Nicholson Classic!

One person in the Demond Nicholson camp said they have only fought five times but Nicholson and D'Mitrius Ballard put on another great bout, won this time by Ballard. Both guys let it all go, especially in the final round, but Ballard came out the victor.

Now in the ring -- the 178-pound championship between Antwan Ward of Sugar Ray Leonard and Jerry Odom of No Excuse.

Grayton Wins By RSC!

Another Referee Stops Contest -- our fifth so far tonight. David Grayton wins by RSC-2 over Jonathan Burrs. The stoppage was set up by a blistering slugfest that Grayton got the best of with a right hook that dropped Burrs. Seconds later, another Grayton flurry forced the bout to be stopped.

Next is the latest battle in the continuing rivalry between Demond Nicholson of Cherry Lane and D'Mitrius Ballard of No Excuse. These two have been battling each other for quite a while! This one is for the 165-pound Open title.

Reed Wins 141-Pound Title By RSC!

Michael Reed captures the 141-pound title with an RSC-3 over Cornell Hines. Judging by his reaction, it may not have been the most satisfying win for Reed. He didn't look too pleased.

Up next, 2010 National Golden Gloves champ David Grayton of Headbangers faces Jonathan Burrs, II of Hagerstown Gym.

Langdon Wins Junior Team Title; LA Boxing Captures Novice Team Title!

Congratulations to Langdon Recreation Center who won the Junior Division Team title during the Washington Golden Gloves Tournament. Langdon had five champions in the junior division. The coach of the Langdon team is Beltway Boxing legend Darryll "Terrible T" Tyson. LA Boxing won the Novice Team title with their three wins tonight. We'll get the open team champs later tonight.

Action is back in the ring with the 141-pound Open Championship. Michael Reed of Dream Team tries to keep his hopes for a second straight national title alive as he faces Cornell Hines of Sugar Ray Leonard.

Gary Antonio Russell Wins By Stunning Stoppage!

Gary Antonio Russell wins the 132-pound Open title with a stunning RSC-1 over his gym mate Joel Young. Russell landed a crushing right hand that Young just didn't see! The bout was stopped immediately. Antonio Russell is still trying to duplicate what his older brothers -- Gary, Jr. And Allan -- have done, win a national title.

We are now in intermission. Any questions? Now is the time to send them (although you can send them all throughout the evening.)

Davis Wins 123-pound Open Championship!

Gervonta Davis captures the 123-pound title with a decision over Romello Webster of NOMIS. Solid performance for both men! Now in the ring -- Gary Antonio Russell of Enigma vs. Joel Young also of Enigma.

Outlaw Wins 114-Pound Title At First-Round Bell!

Interesting bout to start the Open competition. Gregory Outlaw of Sugar Ray Leonard wins the 114-pound title with an RSC-1 over Duglas Soto-Escalante of Down Under. Outlaw scored two standing eight-counts during the round but as the bell rang to end the bout, Outlaw landed a crushing right hand that dropped Soto and ended the bout because of the three-knockdown rule. I did think the punch that landed to end the bout was after the bell but it was a solid shot.

Up next is the 123-pound bout between Romello Webster of NOMIS and Gervonta Davis of Upton.

Campbell Wins 201+ Crown!

Kenneth Campbell captures 201+ pound title by decision over Marcus Phelps of Hillcrest Boxing. We now move into the open division which should be very exciting! In the ring now is the 114-pound championship-- Duglas Soto-Escalante of Down Under taking on Gregory Outlaw of Sugar Ray Leonard.

Sadikas Makes it Three Straight For LA Boxing in Stunning Fashion

Albi Sadikas wins the third Novice title of the night for LA Boxing as he captured the 201 pound Novice Championship with an RSC-3 over William Broaddus of Upton. Sadikas turned what was an even bout into a stunning finish as he landed a solid right hand that dropped Broaddus to the canvas. Broaddus got up but was deemed unfit to continue.

The final Novice bout is in the ring -- the 201 pounds+ title as Kenneth Campbell of Frederick takes on Marcus Phelps of Hillcrest.

Jones Wins 178 Pound Title!

Joe Jones of No Excuse takes the 178-pound title with a decision over Gregory Clark from NOMIS. Clark lost a point for using his head. Next is the 201-pound title bout between Albi Sadikas of LA Boxing and William Broaddus of Upton Gym.

Mitchell Wins 165-Pound Title!

Maurice Mitchell of Dream Team captures the 165-pound Novice title with a decision over Steven Bucci of Ground Control. Mitchell scored a standing-eight during the bout while Bucci lost a point for holding.

Next up is the 178 Pound Novice championship-- Gregory Clark of NOMIS battles Joe Jones of No Excuse.

Dolly Wins Female Championship!

Kimberly Dolly of Old School captures the 150-pound Novice female title over Keystone Boxing's Myah Spruiell. Dolly survived a knockdown to win the title. Next is the 165-pound championship as we return to the men's side. Maurice Mitchell of Dream Team battles Steven Bucci of Ground Control.

Two Straight For LA Boxing!

Zarifbek Nishanbaev wins the second of back-to-back titles for LA Boxing as he wins the 152-pound title by decision over Jacob Amegah of Hillcrest. Someone mentioned that LA Boxing was rocking the novice division. The fact is that Nishanbaev and Polishchuk are two very solid boxers and Albi Sadikas, who we'll see in the 201-pound Novice title bout, isn't that far behind.

Now in the ring is the 150-pound Female championship between Kimberly Dolly of Old School and Myah Spruiell of Keystone Boxing.

Polishchuk Wins 141-Title!

Incredible bout between Yurii Polischuk and Dravontay Speed-Rawls. These are two names you may want to remember in the future. Polishchuk wins the 141-pound Novice title but don't be surprised if they meet many times in the future.

In the ring now is the 152-pound novice title bout between Zarifbek Nishanbaev of LA Boxing taking on Jacob Amegah of Hillcrest.

Jefri Gutierrez of Laurel Boxing wins the 132-pound title by walkover.

Bates Win Novice 123-pound Title!

The first championship of the evening goes to Marcus Bates of Old School, who wins by RSC-3 over Rodrigo Gabriel of Frederick Fight Club. Nice performance by Bates who scored two standing eights in the first round and two in the third to get the bout stopped. Bates wins the 123-pound Novice title.

Bout number two -- the all-Laurel Boxing bout between Jefri Gutierrez and Andrew Barrett -- has been scratched. We now move to what should be a great bout between Yurii Polishchuk of LA Boxing and Drayvontay Speed-Rawls of No Excuse for the 141 pound Novice title!

Polishchuk is someone I've watched a few times over the last 12 months and he is impressive. Meanwhile, Speed-Rawls , the nephew of former national Golden Gloves champ Eugene "Sonny" Speed, put on a solid performance in the semis last week.

Good Evening from Waldorf, MD!

Hi from the Waldorf Jaycees in Waldorf, MD for the Washington Golden Gloves Championships! The first bout on the sheet is entering the ring -- 123 pound Novice Championship. Marcus Bates of Old School takes o Rodrigo Gabriel of Frederick Boxing. Crowd still filing in and we should have a solid crowd here tonight. We'll give results after every bout.

Thompson Title Shot Possibly in July; DC a Long Shot To Get Bout!

ESPN.com's Dan Rafael is reporting that the mandatory world heavyweight title shot for DC's Tony "The Tiger" Thompson against world champion Wladimir Klitschko might take place on July 7. This is what Klitschko's manager Bernd Boente is saying.

Rafael adds, however, that both sides are still in negotiation and there is a purse bid slated for Tuesday if the two sides don't agree on the contract. Also, Rafael is reporting that Thompson's promoter, Dan Goossen is interested in bringing the bout to DC, but that would be a long shot. The bout would more than likely be broadcast on the Epix Cable network.

If somehow, some way, that bout would come to Washington, it could make for a very interesting two weeks. Golden Boy is proposing a boxing card at the Verizon Center on June 30 which would be followed by the Klitschko-Thompson rematch in DC on July 7. I don't know if enough stars could align for that to take place!

'Chasing Rocky By 'Junkie' Flaim Is A Good, Memorable Read!

I'm very late on this, but I just finished reading this book and wanted to wait before I did any kind of review.

Back in December of 2006 at the George Mason University Patriot Center, there was a very memorable bout between one of the Junkies of 106.7 The Fan -- "The Latin Donkey" JP Flaim -- and "The American Dream" Jay Watts. The bout helped made that card (which also featured the first bout between Jimmy Lange and Fontaine Cabell and the great matchup between Dean White and Dorin Spivey) the best card of that year and Flaim's appearance brought a lot of fans who follow the Junkies but may not follow local boxing into the fold -- more than 5400 people attended that card.

In December of 2011, Flaim released a book entitled Chasing Rocky that chronicles in nice detail all the training leading up to the bout. Flaim actually gives a nice inside look of what boxers go through to get ready for ANY bout and how Flaim had to earn his acceptance into the boxing community.

For me, it brought back a lot of nice memories of that night and was indeed a very good and fun read. "Chasing Rocky" is in bookstores or you can buy through the likes of Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

For those who have not seen that bout, here it is in its entirety as "The Fight Doctor" Jerome Spears and I called it on that night.

The Semifinals of the Washington Golden Gloves Have Been Brought to You By the Letters R-S-C!

A standing-room only crowd saw a tremendous night of amateur boxing Saturday at the Washington Golden Gloves Semifinals at the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center in Palmer Park, MD. While that crowd suffered through stifling hot temperatures to witness the great action, they saw some rarities as well.

Seven bouts ended in RSC's or Referee Stops Contest. Two bouts ended in retirement or medical disqualifications and one was a walkover. In fact 21 of the 22 scheduled bouts for the evening actually took place and that one walkover took place moments before the bout was scheduled to commence.

The Junior Division wrapped up their competition by crowning the last three champions. Siete Shuler of Langdon won the 12-13, 85-pound title with a decision over Jay Cromwell of Dream Team. Jalonte Cole of No Excuse scored the first RSC of the night as he stopped Daquan White of Sugar Ray Leonard to take the 15-16, 125-pound
title. Michael Peoples of Old School followed with another RSC of No Excuse's Jason Bell to win the 15-16, 147-pound championship in what might have been the best bout of the tournament to date. Another No Excuse boxer -- Lamont Roach -- was unopposed champ of the 16, 132-pound division.

The Novice Division crowned a champion on Saturday in the 146-pound female division. India Speed of No Excuse scored an RSC over Carmen Ware of RPH Academy. Speed comes from good boxing stock -- her uncle is local boxing legend Eugene "Sonny" Speed who won the National Golden Gloves in 1985.

Other results in the Novice Division:

132 pounds: Jeffri Gutierez (Laurel Boxing) over Dardo Larrizo (LA Boxing)

132 pounds: Andrew Barrett (Laurel Boxing) over Donte Alston (Enigma)

141 pounds: Drayvontay Speed-Rawls (No Excuse) over Jahmal Dyer (Loch Raven) Speed-Rawls is a nephew of Sonny Speed.

152 pounds: Jacob Amegah (Hillcrest Boxing) won by medical disqualification over Jacob Gabiam (Laurel Boxing)

165 pounds: Steven Bucci (Ground Control) over Tavon Marshall (Upton)

165 pounds: Maurice Mitchell (Dream Team) RSC over Ryan Watson (Main Street)

178 pounds: Joe Jones (No Excuse) over Kendall Smith (Hillcrest Boxing)

201 pounds: Albi Sadikas (LA Boxing) RSC over Erick Harley (NOMIS)

201+ pounds: Kenneth Campbell (Frederick Boxing) wins by walkover against Bennie Brown (Sugar Ray Leonard)

Here are the results from the Open Division:

132 pounds: Joel Young (Enigma) over Omar Barnes (Club One)

141 pounds: Michael Reed (Dream Team) over Emmanual Rodriguez (Down Under)

152 pounds: David Grayton (Headbangers) over Edward Moselli (Honeycomb)

152 pounds: Jonathan Burrs, III (Hagerstown) RSC over Maynard Sterling (Down Under)

165 pounds: D'Mitrius Ballard (No Excuse) over Reginald Lucas (Upton)

165 pounds: Demond Nicholson (Cherry Lane) over Russell Gaskins (Enigma)

178 pounds: Antwan Ward (Sugar Ray Leonard)over Patrick Coye (Old School)

201+ pounds: Danny Kelly (Headbangers) RSC over Clinton Price (Midtown)

So all roads now lead to Waldorf, MD and the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center for the Washington Golden Gloves Finals which will be on Saturday, March 24 with the doors opening at 7 PM and the first bout is at 8 PM. We should have the bout sheet on Monday and we hope to be blogging live from the Jaycees on Saturday.

Tickets are $25 General Admission, $35 for reserved and $45 for ringside. Tickets are five dollars more at each level at the door. The Waldorf Jaycees Community Center is located at the intersection of Routes 301 and 5.

Quick personal note: And this is a thanks to you, the Beltway Boxing Fan. For the last few weeks, I have seen nothing but packed houses at Beltway Boxing events. Whether it has been Palmer Park, Millersville or DC, fans have been packing gyms and arenas all along the Beltway. It is great to see and I ask that you please keep the momentum going. These boxers truly deserve it and it's only going to get better. Once again, thanks so much!

Russell Jr. WILL Fight in Texas!

At the Washington Golden Gloves in Palmer Park, MD, I had a chance to talk to both Gary Russell Sr. AND Jr. Both assured me that Jr. will be fighting Dat Nguyen on Saturday, April 21 in El Paso, TX.  The bout will be shown on Showtime.

Speaking of tonight's action at the Golden Gloves, we'll have complete results in a couple of hours but there has been some hard hitting action -- Already five RSC's tonight.

Coleman Stopped In Atrocious Performance in California!

Baltimore, MD's Tim "Pitbull" Coleman has been stopped in the second round by former WBO Junior Welterweight champion Kendall "Rated R" Holt of Paterson, NJ in front of a nationally-televised performance at the Morongo Resort and Spa in Cabazon, CA.

Coleman was absolutely NEVER in this contest as he was dropped by a solid Holt bodyshot in the first round and was dropped three times in the second before the bout was stopped at 2:23 of the second by referee Ray Corona on the advice of the Coleman corner.

This is Coleman's second straight knockout loss and it drops his record to 19-3-1, five KO's. Holt's record is now 28-5, 16 KO's and he bounces back from his 12-round split decision to Danny Garcia in October.

A personal note: I talked to Tim Coleman earlier this week for a Fightnews.com article. It is known that Coleman is having some serious managerial issues. Coleman posted on his Facebook page that his camp missed the flight Coleman was on to get from Las Vegas to Cabazon for the weigh-in. Some of the issues Coleman is having are some I can't discuss here, but suffice it to say they are issues that are affecting his training and his boxing regimen. This is not the same Coleman that was a USBA champ and a top prospect from this area.

After the interview, I had a bad feeling about this bout tonight and unfortunately, my feelings were true.

The press tour for the Saturday, May 19 rematch between champion Lamont Peterson and former champ Amir Khan hit DC on Thursday and both men seem at least verbally ready to go.

Russell-Nguyen Bout Moved to a Day Earlier and to Mississippi!

The bout between Gary Russell, Jr. and Dat Nguyen that was originally slated to be on April 21 in El Paso, TX has reportedly been moved to Friday, April 20 and will not be held in Biloxi, MS. This will be a ShoBox telecast.

I personally talked to Russell about two weeks ago at the Washington Golden Gloves and he said his bout was going to be in Texas, so this is a change that has just taken place very recently.

Jones, Spears and Williams Profiled in Examiner.com Column!

As the soon to be WWE Hall-of-Famer and charter member of the Four Horsemen Arn Anderson once said: "I don't like to toot my own horn, but TOOT, TOOT!" To be real, the only horn-tooting I'm doing is because DC Boxing Examiner Ron Harris of Examiner.com included me in an article covering the "Voices From The Ring" here in the Beltway region.

The article also includes ring announcer Henry "Discombobulating" Jones and "The Fight Doctor" Jerome Spears, who is my long-time broadcast partner.

Let me say this before I put the article link up: To say that Jerome and Henry have meant so much to me in covering the sport in this area, doesn't do what they have done justice. The three of us have spent a lot of time and covered a lot of territory together. It's been a true honor to continue to share this journey with them.

Here's the article:

Russell Battles Nguyen (Hopefully) April 21 in El Paso, TX

Lem Satterfield of RingTV.com is reporting that undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. will return to action on Saturday, April 21 when he faces veteran Dat "Be Dat" Nguyen in a 10-round contest in El Paso, Texas. The bout is slated to be part of a Showtime telecast featuring former IBF Bantamweight champ Abner Mares moving up in weight to challenge former world champ Eric Morel.

We say hopefully because this bout has been scheduled two other times -- once Nguyen injured himself and then it was rescheduled for February 11 on the Andre Berto-Victor Ortiz undercard but Berto suffered an injury.

If Russell does make the Showtime telecast, that means it will be back-to-back Beltway Boxers on premium cable television -- Russell on April 21 and Seth Mitchell on April 28th on HBO against Chazz Witherspoon in Atlantic City, NJ.

Dusty Harrison Named High School Athlete of the Week!

Can somebody remember the last time a pro athlete has been named the High School Athlete of the Week? Well, it happened this past week when "The Beltway Boricua" Dusty Harrison was named the NewsChannel 8 High School Athlete of the Week.

Harrison, who is a senior at Thomas Stone High School in Waldorf, MD carries a 3.0 average and plays on the basketball team. The team could have used Harrison on Saturday when Thomas Stone lost in the Maryland 3A State title game to Aquille Carr and Patterson High, but Harrison was otherwise occupied, winning his fourth pro bout at the Washington Convention Center.

Tim Brant of ABC7 has this report:

In another all-Beltway bout, DC junior middleweight Ivan "King Shango" Ziglar stopped Allen "Pitbull" Perkins of Frederick, MD at 2:21 of the second round. Ziglar raises his record to 5-2, two KO's. Perkins falls to 1-6.

The card was promoted by Keystone Boxing with Raymond Jackson serving as matchmaker.

Here is the Post-Fight Wrap-Up:

Here is an interview with Dusty Harrison:

Barnett Puts On Solid Performance!

Nice return for Ty Barnett who dominated an eight-round contest over a very game Damon Antoine. As we've said before, Antoine is a survivor and he is a good survivor--he took some brutal shots from a pretty good puncher in Barnett.

Here are the scores: Shutout for Barnett 80-71 (twice) and 80-72. Barnett is now 19-2-1, 12 KO's while Antoine is now 9-35-2, four KO's. Post-fight wrap will come shortly, but for now, good night from the Nation's Capital!

Barnett Putting On the Gas!

Ty Barnett continues to put his pressure on Damon Antoine. In the fourth round especially, Barnett landed some brutal body shots. Antoine is definitely in survival mode as we enter the fifth, but it's all Barnett thus far in his first bout in DC since 2007.

Barnett-Antoine Round 1 and 2

Solid round for Barnett to open up. Very poised against a crafty foe in Damon Antoine. Barnett landing nice shots to the body. Barnett making Antoine miss and making him pay for it. Antoine is a survivor and is in that mode after two rounds.

Main Event -- Barnett vs. Antoine!

Main event in the ring Ty Barnett vs. Damon Antoine-- scheduled for eight rounds!

Intermission Brings Marriage Proposal!!

During the intermission, ring announcer Discombobulating Jones proposed to his lady friend Latonya Kyler in the middle of the ring. She Said YES!!

Harrison-Mullings Round 1 -- and its Over!

"The Beltway Boricua" Dusty Harrison makes short work of Booker Mullings knocking him out with a strong left hand in 2:08 of the first round. Mullings fell earlier in the bout but referee Malik Waleed called it a slip. A few seconds later, Harrison made no doubt. Harrison is now 4-0, two KO's. Intermission then the main event -- Ty Barnett vs. Damon Antoine.

Co-feature -- Harrison-Mullins -- is coming up!

Dusty Harrison gets a big cheer as he comes to the ring against Booker Mullings. Among folks in attendance: Current world champion Lamont Peterson, former world champ and current NABF Junior Welterweight champ DeMarcus Corley, former world champion Keith Holmes, number one heavyweight contender Tony Thompson, Seth Mitchell, Tony Jeter and Purcell Miller, who officially announced his retirement.

Gaines Coasts To the Finish in Pro Debut!

Renaldo Gaines puts in a workmanlike effort in his pro debut. No knockdowns in the bout, but Gaines went to the body very effectively throughout. Fans were asking him to do a little bit more in that region. Gaines was cautious in the contest against Huffman who had six pro bouts. Gaines won by shutout 40-36 on all three cards. Huffman is now 0-7.

Gaines-Huffman in the Ring!

District Heights, MD lightweight Renaldo "Misunderstood" Gaines makes his pro debut against Warren Huffman of Milwaukee, WI. Results after its over.

Scott Seems To Wrap Things Up in Fourth!

Scott continued to make things very difficult for Ward in the final round. Great defense and overall frustration gave Scott a 40-34 win on all three cards. Scott is 2-0, one KO while Ward is even at 1-1-1, one KO.

Scott Making This a Runaway in Round 3!

Scott is starting to frustrate Ward as he is using his footwork to make Ward miss. Scott is doing a lot of mouthing as well. Scott is dominating at this point.

Scott-Ward Round 2!

Zakki Scott is landing more of the effective blows but both men are wild with their shots. Ward would like to get inside but he is missing a lot with his shots.

Ward Battles Scott in Grudge Match!

Andre Ward and Zakki Scott meet for the first time as pros and that bout is underway. These two met a few times in the amateurs and the rivalry is pretty deep. In this first round, Scott has been landing a nice left hand lead. Ward is trying to work inside, but Scott has the more accurate hands so far.

Ziglar Knocks Out Perkins!

Ivan "King Shango" Ziglar scores a second-round knockout over Allen "Pitbull" Perkins. Ziglar dominated Perkins throughout the contest eventually trapping him in the corner and raining blows on him. Perkins did not beat referee Joe Cooper's 10-count. Ziglar is now 5-2-1, two KO's. Perkins is 1-6.

Akinyanju wins Four-Round Decision!

Abodurin Akinyanju wins a four-round unanimous decision over DeAndre McCole. All three judges scored a shutout for the boxer from Landover, MD who is now 5-2, three KO's. McCole a late sub, had 33 pro fights going in. Ivan Ziglar and Allen Perkins now in the ring.

Big Bo in ring!

Abodurin Akinyanju is in the ring with late sub DeAndre McCole.  Interesting bout through first two rounds.  Akinyanju has had chances but can't put the punches together.

Rupard Wastes no time in debut!

Charlotte Hall, MD middleweight
Josh Rupard took just 1:37 seconds to stop Michael Arnold in his pro debut.  Arnold is now
0-5.

Hollon Wins Majority Decision!

Kaelon Hollon wins a four-round majority decision over Kasondra Hardnett in our opening bout tonight. Two judges scored the bout 39-37. Hollon is now 2-0, one KO. Hardnett is 1-4. Next is the pro debut of Josh Rupard as he faces Michael Arnold.

First Bout Getting Underway!

Kaelon Hollon and Kasondra Hardnett are in the ring. Yours truly was pressed into service by announcing the first bout. Henry is here and will take over. Results after the bout.

Still Waiting For The Card to Begin!

A local comedian is in the ring trying to get the crowd excited. It is not working. Bouts are still aways from starting. Back when things really get started.

Baltimore-Pittsburgh Rivalry Goes From Field to Boxing Ring March 23!

The sports rivalry between the cities of Baltimore, MD and Pittsburgh, PA goes back quite a long way. In the 1970's, the two blue-collar cities met in two epic seven-game World Series matchups. Both were claimed by Pittsburgh -- The Roberto Clemente-led Pirates in 1971 and the "We Are Family"- Bucs of 1979.

Of course, the rivalry between the two has transferred to the football field where the Ravens and Steelers comprise one of the best rivalries in the NFL.

Now, that competitive spirit will move into the boxing ring as Baltimore Boxing promotions puts together a dual amateur boxing meet between boxers from Charm City Baltimore against the Steel City of Pittsburgh on Friday, March 23 at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.

Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased by going to www.baltimoreboxing.com. There will also be a special silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross of Central Maryland. The bell time for this event will be 8 PM with the doors opening at 6:30 PM.

Harrison, Barnett Headline DC Convention Center Card on Saturday, March 10!

The Keystone Boxing card slated for Saturday, March 10 at the Washington Convention Center in DC is just about together and there are eight bouts slated for the card.

Undefeated DC welterweight "The Beltway Boricua" Dusty Harrison is one of the headliners on the card. The 17-year-old will face veteran Booker T. Mullins of Spartanburg, SC in a four-round contest. Harrison (3-0, one KO) fought his last bout at the Convention Center and scored his first pro knockout when he stopped Terrell Davis in the first round. Mullins (3-10, two KO's) last fought in 2010 when he was knocked out in the first round by Perry Ballard in November 2010 in Fairfax, VA.

The co-feature bout marks the return of DC lightweight Ty Barnett, who has not fought in the Beltway region since he fought two bouts in Salisbury, MD in 2010. This will also be just the third time in Barnett's pro career that he has battled in DC and his first since 2007. Barnett (18-2-1, 12 KO's) has lost two of his last four--both by knockout. This includes his last bout -- a third-round KO by undefeated Andrey Klimov on May 14 in Carson, CA.

Barnett will be in an eight-round contest against veteran Damon Antoine of Akron, OH. Antoine (9-34-2, four KO's) lost an eight-round contest to Andrew Farmer on February 18 in Winchester, VA.

In other bouts on the card, DC junior middleweight Ivan Ziglar will face Allen "Pitbull" Perkins of Frederick, MD. Ziglar (4-2-1, one KO) has won three straight. Perkins (1-5) is looking to break a five-bout losing streak.

In a women's bout, Kaelan Hollon of DC will take on Kasondra Hardnett of Columbus, OH in a four-round contest. Hollon (1-0) won her pro debut with a four-round unanimous decision over Yolanda Bellamy of Raleigh, NC on November 12 at Howard University's Crampton Auditorium in DC. Hardnett (1-3) broke a three-bout losing streak with a four-round unanimous decision over Monique Lacy on November 3 in Cockeysville, MD.

Temple Hills, MD cruiserweight Zakki Scott will have an interesting four-round bout as he faces DC's Andre Ward. Scott also won his pro debut on the November 12 card and scored a first-round TKO of Judidas Williams. Ward appeared on that November 12 card as well, winning a second-round TKO over Joshua Nelson.

Two Beltway Boxers will make their pro debuts on this card. Super featherweight Renaldo Gaines of District Heights, MD will battle Warren Huffman of Milwaukee, WI (0-6) and Josh Rupard of Charlotte Hall, MD will face Mike Arnold of Akron, OH (0-4).

Landover, MD heavyweight Abodurin "Big Bo" Akinyanju (4-2, three KO's) is also slated to be on this card but promoters are looking for another opponent since the first one was knocked out on a card in Philadelphia, PA this past weekend.
