Davis, Martin Take Advancing Bouts January 31 In Chester, PA!

January will find a number of young Beltway Boxers attempting to take upward steps in their careers.

The month will end with two more trying to move forward at Harrah's Casino in Chester, PA on Saturday, January 31.

Baltimore featherweight Gervonta "Tank" Davis will be in the co-feature contest in his first scheduled eight-rounder against Israel Suarez of Luquillo, Puerto Rico.  The undefeated Davis (9-0, eight KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision over German Muraz on October 8 in Biloxi, MS.  Suarez (4-4-2, one KO) lost an eight-round split decision to Frank Santos De Alba on April 18 in Allentown, PA.

Also on the card, DC welterweight Kareem "Reemo" Martin (3-0-1, two KO's) will compete in his first scheduled six-round contest when he faces James Robinson of York, PA.  Martin last fought on October 10 and won a four-round unanimous decision over Dominique Foster in Highland Heights, KY.  Robinson lost a six-round unanimous decision to Fred Jenkins, Jr. on December 13 in Philadelphia, PA.   Robinson fought in Cockeysville, MD on November 6 and scored a second-round TKO over Joshua Robertson.

Hernandez Harrison Signs With Roc Nation!

David Greisman of Boxing Scene.com is reporting that undefeated DC welterweight Dusty Hernandez Harrison has signed a promotional contract with Roc Nation.

Harrison (24-0, 13 KO's) is slated to make his Roc Nation debut in the main event of a nationally televised (Fox Sports 1) card at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Friday, January 9 when he takes on Tommy Rainone of Plainview, NY (22-5-1, four KO's) for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Welterweight title.

Harrison told Greisman that he looks to keep busy under the Roc Nation banner.  "They want to keep me busy like I've been," Harrison said.  "Lot's of fights.  Big fights. Obviously they have the deal with Fox Sports.  I don't know if the plan on me being on all of them but I can't imagine why not.  They want to keep me busy.  That was a good thing for us.  Outside the ring, even this fight, they have some pretty good plans for us."

There is a bus trip planned to see Harrison at MSG.  Call 301-437-3293 for more information.  Beltway Boxers Cecil McCalla and Jerry Odom are also slated to be on the card.

Nicklow Drops 10-Round Decision in Tokyo!

Baltimore middleweight Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow fought gamely but lost a 10-round unanimous decision to undefeated 2012 Olympic gold medalist Ryota Murata of Tokyo, Japan tonight (Japanese time) at the Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo.

Here's a report from the website Asian Boxing:

In the early stages it looked like the bout was going to be a lot more competitive than many had suspected with Nicklow coming to win and giving Murata plenty to think about . By the end of the round however Murata was beginning to to find his range and land some lovely shots to both head and body, they weren't discouraging Nicklow but they were connecting and they did look to be heavy shots.

The determination of Nicklow was seen again in round 2 though by the end of the round it did appear that Murata had began to go through the gears and was landing almost at will and finding holes in the defense of Nicklow. As Murata became more successful Nicklow's work rate dropped and the American was being kept behind his guard whilst looking to land one punch and cover up.

In round 4 we saw a small clash of heads though Murata continued to land all the notable shots as he did through round 5 though it did quickly become clear that he was very much a fighter who was trying to change himself as a fighter. The Murata from the amateurs was a pure pressure fighter but this Murata, he was a man trying to be a boxer and it showed that it wasn't his natural style with his footwork in particular looking horrible.

Sadly for Murata a clash of heads in round 6 resulted in a nasty cut over his left eye. The headbutt seemed somewhat deliberate with Nicklow clearly leading with his dome and it seemed like it pissed off Murata who began to let his punches flow with vicious intent. The intent however died down somewhat the following round as Murata got back to moving, clumsily, and trying to work off his jab, it again looked foreign to him. In the 8th round Murata's domination continued as Nicklow tried to taunt and tease Murata into getting reckless, the Japanese fighter however, showed great restraint and picked his own moments to attack as he continued to win rounds.

In round 9 we saw Murata continuing to box and move though finally, in round we got a glimpse of Murata the fighter as he stood and unloaded on Nicklow. It was the explosive punching that made us all love Murata as an amateur, unfortunately was only a glimpse of that Murata, but enough for us to know that he still has that in his system.

Although he got the win, in the end, this didn't appear to be a great performance from Murata. Be it a change in his style or something else Murata didn't look much like a world champion in the making. Part of that was to do with Nicklow who was, to his credit, game, tough and and knew how to defend himself, though Murata needs to get back to what he is good at, fighting not boxing.

For what it's worth the win was a clear one with scores of 100-90, twice, and 100-91. The result was a good one even if the performance wasn't.

Nicklow drops to 24-5-3, eight KO's while Murata is now 6-0, four KO's.

Alantez Fox Faces Patrick Day In Battle of Undefeated Boxers January 9 in Cabazon, CA!

(Art by Ross Molovinsky)

Undefeated Forestville, MD junior middleweight Alantez "SlyAza" Fox will take on fellow undefeated boxer Patrick Day of Freeport, NY in an eight-round contest on Friday, January 9 at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in Cabazon, CA.  The bout will be a feature contest on Showtime's Shobox telecast.

Fox (13-0-1, four KO's) last fought on September 20 and won a six-round unanimous decision over Jonathan Garcia in Queens, NY.  This will be Fox's first eight-round contest since battling Frank Galarza to a draw in September of 2012.

Day (9-0-1, five KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision over Felipe Reyes on October 15 in New York City.  Day has never fought a scheduled eight-round bout.

On paper, this is a fascinating matchup because of the similarities in the two boxers.  Both men are undefeated, 22 years old, had solid amateur backgrounds (Day was the number one ranked 152-pounder in the United States) and both are promoted by DiBella Entertainment.

This means that Friday, January 9 will be a huge day for Beltway Boxing fans with Fox on ShoBox and both Dusty Harrison and Cecil McCalla in separate bouts on Fox Sports 1 from the theater at Madison Square Garden.

Russell Wins Easy Unanimous Decision; Peterson Falls Ill Prior to Bout; Wade Stops Hunter in Two; Jargal Stopped in Ninth in New York!

A very eventful night for Beltway Boxers on both coasts on Saturday.

In the co-feature contest at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, WA, "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. of Capitol Heights, MD won an easy 10-round unanimous decision over an outgunned Christopher Martin of Chula Vista, CA.

Russell used his speed of hand and feet to keep Martin at bay.  Martin had no answer for anything Russell did in the bout.  Russell won by scores of 100-90 (twice) and 99-91.  Russell wins his first bout since losing his world title bid against Vasyl Lomachenko and raises his record to 25-1, 14 KO's.  Martin falls to 28-5-3, nine KO's.

Meanwhile, DC lightweight Anthony Peterson fell ill during the evening and could not participate in his bout against Hector Velazquez.  According to the Headbangers camp, doctors diagnosed Peterson with symptoms resembling either kidney stones or a sports hernia.  Peterson is resting comfortably and is on his way back to DC.

Largo, MD super middleweight Dominic "Lights Out" Wade scored a second-round KO over Eddie Hunter of Kent, WA.  Wade is now 17-0, 12 KO's while Hunter falls to 10-12-2, three KO's.

At the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY,  "The Mongolian Mongoose" Bayan Jargal of Arlington, VA lost via ninth-round TKO to "The Hebrew Hammer" Cletus Seldin of Brooklyn, NY in a rematch of a July bout that was stopped early and declared a no-contest in the third round because of cuts.

Seldin dominated early in the contest, dropping Jargal in the first round with a right hand.  Seldin wore down Jargal throughout the rest of the contest, ultimately knocking Jargal down again in the ninth before referee Arthur Mercante, Jr. stopped the bout at 2:46 of the round.

With the victory, Seldin captures the vacant WBC International Junior Welterweight title and is now 15-0, 12 KO's.  Jargal drops to 17-6-3, 11 KO's.

In the co-feature bout, Maxell "The General" Taylor lasted just 37 seconds as he was stopped by Joe Smith, Jr.  Smith jumped on Taylor early and unleashed a flurry of punches.  Taylor could not respond and the bout was halted.  Taylor is now 18-10-1, eight KO's while Smith is 17-1, 14 KO's.

TV Portion Of Washington State Card Shuffles For Beltway Boxers!

There is a lot of shuffling going on with the Saturday, December 20 card at the Little Creek Resort in Shelton, WA with the Beltway Boxers on the card being affected the most.

First, Anthony Peterson's original opponent, Yakibu Amidu dropped off the card so Peterson (34-1, 22 KO's) will battle Mexican veteran Hector Velazquez (56-24-3, 38 KO's) in a 10-round contest.  However, because of the change in opponent, Peterson will no longer be the co-feature on the Showtime telecast.

"Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. will take Peterson's spot on the telecast as his 10-round contest with Christopher Martin remains intact. According to Boxrec.com, Russell's brother, Antonio, is no longer on the card.  Antonio Russell was scheduled to make his pro debut.

One other change, Dominic "Lights Out" Wade will not face Grady Brewer on this card.  Wade will now take on Eddie Hunter of Kent, WA (10-11-2, three KO's) in a 10-round contest.

Rodriguez Scores Knockout Win In Philadelphia!

This late report from this past Saturday at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, PA.  Haymarket, VA welterweight Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez scored a fifth-round TKO over previously undefeated Nathaniel Rivas of Berlin, NJ.

Here's the report from Kurt Wolfheimer of Fightnews.com:

"Rodriguez started quickly, dropping Rivas with a left hook, just seconds into the opening round. Rivas rose to his feet, but Rodriguez kept pounding away. Rivas eventually regained his senses and landed a good right just before the bell sounded to end the opening round. Rivas had solid welts on both cheeks as he entered the second round. Rodriguez was game, but it looked like the power of Rivas, who was taking over during rounds two through four. Rivas seemed like he was going to take over the fight in the fifth, however, a short right hand stunned him. Rodriquez jumped on Rivas with four unanswered punches, before dropping him in the corner. Rivas beat the count, but Rodriguez wouldn’t let him breath, banging away with reckless abandon. Rivas was taking excessive punishment when hall of fame referee Steve Smoger stepped in and called a halt to the contest at 1:01 of the fifth round."

Rodriguez is now 6-2-1, five KO's while Rivas falls to 5-1, two KO's.

Beltway Boxers Boxing Coast To Coast December 20!

On Saturday, December 20, six Beltway Boxers will be in action in two locations -- one on each coast of the United States.

We've mentioned that four of the locals on the card will be competing at the Little Creek Casino and Resort in Shelton, WA.  We can now update this with opponents.

DC lightweight Anthony Peterson will appear on the Showtime televised-portion of the card when he takes on Yakubu "Black Mamba" Amidu of Los Angeles, CA by way of Ghana in a 10-round contest.  Peterson (34-1, 22 KO's) scored a first-round knockout over Edgar Riovalle in her last outing on August 9 in Brooklyn, NY.

Amidu (21-5-2, 19 KO's) participated in the Boxcino Lightweight tournament on February 21 in Laughlin, NV and lost a seven-round split decision to Chris Rudd.  The boxers were even on the scorecards after six rounds and needed a tie-breaker round to decide a winner.

In one of the 10-round bouts that may make the Showtime Extreme telecast, undefeated Largo, MD middleweight Dominic "Lights Out" Wade will battle former Contender champion Grady "Bad Boy" Brewer of Lawton, OK.

Wade (16-0, 11 KO's) is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision over Nick Brinson on June 27 in Las Vegas, NV.  Brewer, who won the second season of the Contender (32-19, 16 KO's), has turned his career around with two straight wins after losing five in a row.  Brewer won a six-round unanimous decision over Said Ouali on September 27 in Oklahoma City, OK.

The card will be a special affair for the Russell Family of Capitol Heights, MD.  "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. (24-1, 14 KO's) makes his return in his first bout since losing the WBO Featherweight world title opportunity to Vasyl Lomachenko when he battles Christopher Martin of Chula Vista, CA (28-4-3, nine KO's) in a 10-round contest.

However, eyes will also be on Russell's brother, Antonio,  who will make his pro debut on this card.  Antonio Russell, the "Golden Boy" of the 2013 National Golden Gloves, will take on Salvador Perez of Fresno, CA (2-6-2, one KO) in a four-rounder.

Meanwhile, back east at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY, there will be a 10-round rematch between Arlington, VA junior welterweight "The Mongolian Mongoose" Bayan Jargal and "The Hebrew Hammer" Cletus Seldin of Brooklyn, NY.

The last time the two men met on July 18 at the Paramount, the bout only lasted into the third round when Jargal (17-5-3, 11 KO's) suffered a cut from an accidental head butt.  Jargal has not fought since July 18, however the undefeated Seldin (14-0, 11 KO's) scored a second-round knockout of Rameses Gil on September 19 at the Paramount.

The co-feature pits Baltimore, MD light heavyweight Maxell "The General" Taylor against Joe Smith, Jr. of Long Island, NY in an eight-round contest.  Taylor (18-9-1, eight KO's) will try to break a five-bout losing streak that has come against boxers with a combined won-loss record of 76-3.  Smith (16-1, 13 KO's) has won 10 straight since suffering his only loss in August of 2010.

For Williams (17-1, 12 KO's) this will be his first bout since losing his first pro bout -- a fifth-round stoppage against Gabriel Campillo on August 1 in Shelton, WA.  Gbenga (20-17, 20 KO's) has only won once in his last eight bouts.  Gbenga's last outing was a seventh-round stoppage loss to Phil Jackson Benson on October 8 in Biloxi, MS.  Gbenga could not continue after being hit with an accidental low blow.  This will be Gbenga's ninth bout this year.

He was scheduled to be on the card anyway, but undefeated Accokeek, MD junior middleweight "Swift" Jarrett Hurd will now participate in the eight-round main event on Friday, December 5 at Harrah's Casino in Chester, PA.

Hurd will face his most experienced foe to date in Eric "Murder" Mitchell, a native of Philadelphia who now fights out of Vero Beach, FL.  Hurd (13-0, eight KO's) is replacing Harry Joe Yorgey who pulled out of the bout.  Hurd is coming off back-to-back first-round stoppages in his last two bouts.
