Khan-Peterson to 'Definitely Take Place' In DC December 10!
According to a tweet by ESPN.com Boxing Writer Dan Rafael, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says the December 10th championship bout between WBA Junior Welterweight titleholder Amir Khan and mandatory challenger Lamont Peterson will "definitely take place in Washington, DC."
No official word on where the bout will be held in the city, although Constitution Hall has been mentioned previously. There can also be a possibility that Golden Boy may be watching what might happen with the NBA labor situation, because having no season could free up dates at the Verizon Center.
Lem Satterfield of Ringtv.com is also reporting Schaefer as saying that undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight and Golden Boy prospect Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell will "definitely be on the card."
To all who contacted Golden Boy Promotions -- thanks so much for your efforts! Next step: getting our very own ring announcer Discombobulating Jones to be the ring announcer for this event!!
By the way, the bout is slated to be televised by HBO which is very significant. The bout would be the first time that HBO has televised a boxing card in the Beltway region in 18 years!! The last time was the Riddick Bowe-Jesse Ferguson card at RFK Stadium on May 22, 1993.

Aiken (16-8-1, 12 KO's) will take on veteran Edner "Cherry Bomb" Cherry of Wauchula, FL (28-6-2, 16 KO's) in a 10-round main event just 13 days after losing a six-round unanimous decision to Todd Wilson at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. Beltway Boxing Fans -- Time to Step Up to the Plate!
One of the top men in the promotion wants it here. Both the boxers want to see the bout here. There is only one part of the equation needed to get the Amir Khan-Lamont Peterson bout in DC -- YOU, the Beltway Boxing Fan!
So the following is for all the Beltway Boxing Fans, especially those who always complain that we don't get quality bouts here. We now have a VERY GOOD opportunity to get a quality card in DC. But to seal this deal, the fans have to step up and want the bout!!
Unlike most situations, we are not fighting against areas with casino money. As of yesterday (according to published reports), DC was competing with Detroit, MI and Montreal, CA for the rights to hold this card. So casino money isn't the big issue here.
Also, the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission is not completely the same as it was back in 2005 when they sanctioned Kevin McBride-Mike Tyson. There is a good mixture of experienced and new folks on the commission that I believe is capable of handling a card of this magnitude.
Most importantly, everyone principally involved in the bout WANTS the bout to be here. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has publicly said he would like the bout to be in DC. Khan has said he would not mind fighting in DC since he enjoyed his recent visit to the Nation's Capitol. Obviously, Peterson wants it here.
Schaefer has also said that one, maybe two other Beltway Boxers would be added to the card. Friday night's win by Seth Mitchell would free him up to be on this card. There is also a possibility that Gary Russell, Jr. would be on the card as well.
Those are three guys that many Beltway Boxing Fans would want to see perform in the hometown area. For Russell, it would be his FIRST pro bout at home!
So everything seems to be in place for this card to take place in Washington, DC. The rest is up to us--The Beltway Boxing community. Now is not the time to be a naysayer. Let your voice be heard! Golden Boy can be found on Facebook and Twitter at Golden Boy Boxing. Please post (as I have done) saying you want to see Khan-Peterson here in DC!
If you REALLY love Beltway Boxing, now's the time to prove it!

Could Khan-Peterson Land in DC?
There are a lot of rumblings going around about this one. Unified Junior Welterweight champion Amir Khan told ESPN.com's Dan Rafael that he would like one more bout at 140 pounds before moving up to welterweight, and that bout looks like it's going to be against DC's own Lamont Peterson. The bout would take place on Saturday, December 10 and would be televised by HBO.
There are a number of locations being discussed for the bout and DC is apparently very high on the list. Khan recently visited the Nation's Capital during a visit by American Muslim athletes. Even though Khan is from England, he trains regularly in the United States, primarily at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California. Khan said he enjoyed the city and is willing to fight here. Constitution Hall, which last hosted a boxing card in March of 2002, would possibly be the venue.
Peterson was offered a shot at Khan after his draw with Victor Ortiz (who fights Floyd Mayweather, Jr. this Saturday) back in December but turned it down because of the money and the terms of the rematch clause. Now, Peterson is one of Khan's mandatory challengers which means he can turn down the rematch clause if he desires.
In a related development, Washington Examiner Columnist Thom Loverro says that should the Khan-Peterson bout take place here, Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth Mitchell would be added to the card, provided he wins tonight in Las Vegas.

Nice Interviews from MaxBoxing.com!
My good buddy Alec Kohut of MaxBoxing.com is doing some outstanding work for his Eastern Regional Report. He has two interviews featuring Beltway Boxers -- One is a video and one is audio.
The first is very timely considering Mr. Gary Russell, Jr. is in action this evening in Biloxi, MS tonight. This is a nice video conversation with both Gary Russell, Sr. and Jr.
Also, on Alec's MaxBoxing East Coast Regional Report (which you can hear every Tuesday night at 9 PM ET on BlogTalk Radio) Former USBA Junior Welterweight Tim "Pit Bull" Coleman was a recent guest and talked about his loss. That can be heard here:

Updates on Russell, Mitchell and Thompson!
Three of our Beltway Boxers have scheduled high-profile bouts in the coming weeks.
Undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. will be back in action this Saturday, September 3 when he takes on Leonilo "Veneno" Miranda of Mexico in an eight-round contest at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, MS. The bout is slated to appear on HBO.
Russell (17-0, 10 KO's) is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision win over Eric Estrada on July 23 in Las Vegas. Miranda (32-3, 30 KO's) lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Luis Franco on February 4 in Santa Ynez, CA.
It won't be HBO, but it looks like the next bout for undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell will be carried by two TV networks.
ESPN.com Boxing Writer Dan Rafael is reporting that Mitchell (22-0-1, 16 KO's) has had his August 27 bout rescheduled for Friday, September 16 at Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas. The opponent will not be Mike Mollo in this one because the bout is cheaper since it will not be on HBO. Promoters are still looking for a new opponent.
The bout will be carried by both Fox Sports Net as well as Telefutura -- two unrelated TV networks.
Meanwhile, the IBF heavyweight title eliminator between Tony "The Tiger" Thompson and Eddie Chambers has been set for Friday, October 28 at Bally's Casino in Atlantic City, NJ and it has been added to a ShoBox telecast on the Showtime Network. The bout will open a tripleheader broadcast.

Finally, Ringside Results!
My apologies for being late in bringing the results of the Beltway amateurs in the recent Ringside World Championships. Unlike most of the major amateur events, Ringside, quite frankly, does not do a good job in provide results. So I have been getting them piece mill and even at this stage, I don't know if I have everyone who won championships from this area. Here's who I do have (thanks to you).
Kavon Robertson of Staunton Boxing won 3 matches to capture the 10-11 year old 70# division.
Lamont Roach Jr.(NoXcuse) won the 15/16 132lb Championship
Drayvontay Rawls (NoXcuse) won the open 141lb Novice Championship
Jordan White won the 13-14 85lb Championship.

Franchon Crews Profiled in Ring Magazine; Boxes on Amateur Card in Glen Burnie Sept. 15!
Multi-time national amateur champion and Baltimore resident Franchon Crews is the subject of a very revealing article in the amateur section of the current issue of Ring Magazine. Crews talks openly about her background and how she got into the sport.
By the way, Crews tells BATB that she will be boxing on the Baltimore Boxing amateur show which will be held on Thursday, September 15 at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.
Also featured in a sidebar article is a story on the UMAR Gym in Baltimore, headed by Marvin McDowell. Recently, a number of boxers and dignitaries from Latin American countries have visited the gym to learn more about UMAR's "No Hooks Before Books" program. This included a recent visit by a group from Mexico. Crews, who trains at UMAR, spoke to the visitors in fluent Spanish and autographed a number of items for them.
