A. Fox Captures WBC USNBC Title With Unanimous Decision In Birmingham!

Forestville, MD middleweight Alantez "Slyaza" Fox completed a big night for the Beltway by winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Kenneth McNeil of Birmingham, AL to win the WBC USNBC Middleweight title Saturday night at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham.

Fox had to weather an early McNeil storm as he was rocked by a McNeil overhand right in the middle of the first round.  However, late in the round, Fox dropped McNeil with a straight right hand of his own.

Fox would stick to his game plan throughout the contest.  However, McNeil would land another solid right in the fifth round.  Fox seemed to take that shot a lot better, however.  Fox started to bend McNeil over with continuous shots in the second half of the fight while McNeil would land one blow here and there. Fox was the busier fighter and would win the bout by scores of 95-94 (twice) and 97-92.

Fox remains undefeated at 22-0-1, 10 KO's while McNeil falls to 10-3, seven KO's.

JARRETT HURD WINS IBF JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP WITH NINTH-ROUND KO!

Congratulations to Accokeek, MD's "Swift" Jarrett Hurd, the brand new IBF Junior Middleweight champion.  Hurd won the title with a stunning ninth-round knockout of Detroit, MI's Tony "Superbad" Harrison tonight at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, AL.  The bout was shown live on Fox.

Early in the bout, Harrison used nice footwork and was able to land good shots.  Harrison was able to make Hurd miss landing power shots, however, Hurd's jab kept him in the bout and he did not deviate from his eventual game plan.

Much like his win over Frank Galarza in November of 2015, Hurd eventually was able to get inside and break Harrison down. Hurd ended the bout with a short, crushing right hook that dropped Harrison to the canvas.  Harrison got up at the count of nine but then spit out his mouthpiece.  Referee Jim Korb waived the bout off at 2:24.

Hurd remains undefeated at 20-0, 14 KO's.  Harrison's record falls to 24-2, 20 KO's.  Hurd is the third Beltway Boxer to win a world championship in the first two months of 2017.

Lamont Peterson Wins WBA Welterweight Title With Unanimous Decision!!!

Washington, DC's Lamont Peterson won a 12-round unanimous decision over a very game David Avanesyan of Pyatigorsk, Russia to win the WBA "regular" Welterweight championship tonight at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, OH.

A 16-month layoff did not hurt Peterson as he used a strong body attack and basically outworked Avanesyan over the 12 rounds in what was a very entertaining contest.  Peterson was able to work his way in and take what Avanesyan was able to offer.  Peterson would win by scores of 115-113 and 116-112 (twice).

Peterson captures a world title in his second weight division and raises his record to 35-3-1, 17 KO's while Avanesyan, who came in as the defending champion, falls to 22-2-1, 11 KO's.

Williams, Jr. Stopped In Six In Cincinnati!

Laurel, MD light heavyweight Thomas "Top Dog" Williams, Jr. has suffered a crushing knockout at the hands of undefeated "Sir" Marcus Browne of Staten Island, NY tonight at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Williams was never really in the contest after the first round. In round two, Browne caught Williams with a stiff right jab.  Williams went down to a knee and his glove touched the canvas.  However, Browne hit Williams again while he was down.  Referee Ken Millner took a point away from Browne.

Williams tried to find offense in the fourth and managed to land body shots while Browne was against the ropes but Browne landed a solid counter right hook and dropped Williams for the second time.  Browne would drop Williams for a third time with a straight left hand and finish the bout at 42 seconds of the sixth round.

Williams has now lost two straight and he is now 20-3, 14 KO's.  Browne remains undefeated and he is 19-0, 14 KO's.

Hurd-Harrison Bout Now For Vacated IBF Super Welterweight Title!

BATB has learned that the 12-round contest between undefeated Accokeek, MD super welterweight  "Swift" Jarrett Hurd and Tony "Superbad" Harrison of Detroit, MI on Saturday, February 25th at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, AL will now be for the vacant IBF Super Welterweight title!   The bout will shown live on the Fox Network and on Fox Deportes with the telecast beginning at 8 PM ET.

The title became vacant after titlist Jermall Charlo dropped the belt to move up to middleweight to seek bigger challenges in a new division.

Hurd, the 2016 co-Beltway Boxer Of The Year (19-0, 13 KO's), is coming off an outstanding six-round TKO over Jo Jo Dan on November 12 in Philadelphia, PA.  Hurd has knocked out his last five opponents and is ranked third in the world by the IBF.

Harrison (24-1, 20 KO's) is ranked number two by the IBF and has won three straight since suffering his only loss to Willie Nelson by ninth-round TKO in July of 2015 in Tampa, FL.  Two of Harrison three wins came against Beltway Boxers.  Harrison won a 10-round unanimous decision over Cecil McCalla in October of 2015 in Houston, TX then defeated Fernando Guerrero by sixth-round TKO on March 5 in Bethlehem, PA.

Here's what boxing people --and the boxers themselves -- are saying about this quality matchup.

"These guys have already shown their mettle by agreeing to fight each other - No. 2 versus No. 3 - for the No. 1 spot,'' said Tom Brown of TGB Promotions. "Having this match be for a world title is a great reward for two young guys who have shown a willingness to face each other.''

"Boxing writers and fans are already buzzing about Harrison versus Hurd, an explosive matchup," said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. "The winner will now be the IBF champion, bringing greatly increased significance to what should already be a war."

"This is the moment every boxer dreams of, becoming the world champion,'' said Hurd. "I finally get that opportunity on the big stage - on the Deontay Wilder heavyweight championship card and on FOX in prime time on national TV. I'm blessed. I want to thank everyone for getting me to this point. Tony Harrison is a great fighter. It's not going to be an easy fight. Tony Harrison is top-level competition and I'm a top level competitor. Two great fighters going after something they want.  But I have to say my pants are falling and I need my belt.''

"I've been waiting on this for a long time. This the biggest shot of my life. It's like my son being born all over again,'' Harrison said. "This just made the fight that much more interesting. As a boxer this is what you dream of - the day you fight for a world title. Santa came early. We're both 26 years old. It's a dream come true for both of us. It doesn't change the approach. It just makes it much sweeter and puts that much more respect on the winner of this fight.''

Beltway Boxers have opportunities to win two belts on this card.   As BATB posted earlier, Alantez Fox of Forestville, MD will challenge Kenneth McNeil of Birmingham for the vacant NABF Middleweight championship on the undercard.

Baxter Wins Second Straight Bout In North Carolina!

Washington, DC welterweight Jonathan "Bad Badger" Baxter scored his second straight first-round knockout win in North Carolina on Saturday, February 11.  Baxter stopped Javonta Cherry of Wilson, NC in the first round at the Dorton Arena in Raleigh.  A series of body blows did the damage as Cherry was knocked down three times before the bout was stopped at the two-minute mark.

Baxter's two wins came within a week's time.  On Saturday, February 4th, Baxter knocked out Terrence Moore in Wilson, NC. This is also Baxter's third win in the Tar Heel state -- all three by first-round knockout. Baxter is now 3-1, three KO's and has won three straight since his pro debut where he lost to Vladimir Pierre by four-round split decision on November 12 in Baltimore, MD.

Cherry is 0-3 with all three losses coming by first-round knockout to Beltway Boxers.  Cherry previously lost to Malik Jackson and Mack Allison, IV.

M. Fox Wins Majority Decision In Fort Washington!

Undefeated Forestville, MD super lightweight Mykal "The Professor" Fox won the toughest bout of his young pro career surviving an eight-round majority decision win over "Trigger" Tre'sean Wiggins of Newburgh, NY in front of a standing-room only crowd at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.  The bout was the main event of a very competitive King's Promotions card.

Fox, a King's Promotions signee, did a nice job of establishing his right jab throughout the contest. However, unlike many of Fox's previous opponents, Wiggins did a good job at times getting inside Fox's jab as he was able to land some shots in close.  Fox's defense proved to be a major key in the contest as he avoided the majority of Wiggins's punches while landing solid left hands of his own.

Judge Paul Wallace scored the bout even at 76-76 but judges John Gradowski (77-75) and David Braslow (78-74) saw the bout for Fox, who is now 13-0, four KO's while Wiggins's record falls to 7-3, six KO's.

In the co-feature, Bowie, MD cruiserweight Luther "Lights Out" Smith scored a crushing first-round knockout over Darnell "The Unknown" Pierce of Killeen, TX.  The two southpaw cruiserweights were feeling each other out in the early part of the round when suddenly, Smith sent a straight right hand that landed hard on Pierce and dropped him to the canvas.  Pierce barely beat referee David Braslow's count but was not fit to continue.  The bout was stopped at 1:59.

After starting his career as a heavyweight, Smith has won two straight at cruiserweight.  His overall record is 7-1, six KO's. Pierce loses for the first time in his career and he is now 5-1, one KO.

King's Promotions boxer Marcus "The Dreamcrusher" Bates of Washington, DC ended a close junior featherweight contest with Alec McGee of Reno, NV with a stunning, blink-and-you-missed-it knockout in the sixth and final round.

The two men had a very competitive bout as they were able to exchange solid shots.  As the bout entered the sixth round, it looked like Bates was going to go the distance for the first time in his pro career.  However, just as the bell rang to start the round, Bates threw a powerful straight right hand that sent McGee to the canvas. Referee Brent Bovell did not bother to count and the bout ended at one second of the sixth round.  Bates remains undefeated at 6-0-1, six KO's while McGee drops to 2-1.

In other bouts on the card, Bowie, MD super lightweight Greg "The Sharpshooter" Outlaw won a four-round majority decision over "The Left-Handed Bandit" Kashon Hutchinson of Reading, PA.  Outlaw started the contest by landing the harder punches in the first couple of rounds.  By the end of the bout, Outlaw seemed to tire and Hutchinson was able to get his offense going as the bout came to a conclusion.  Judge Braslow scored the bout a draw at 38-38 but John Gradowski (39-37) and Paul Wallace (40-36) saw the contest for Outlaw, who remains undefeated at 2-0.  Hutchinson is now 2-1, one KO.

In a super welterweight contest, "Slick" Justin Hurd of Accokeek, MD scored a TKO at the end of the second round over Dawond Pickney of Hot Springs, AR.  Hurd established his jab very well throughout the bout which led to him landing a solid right hand in the waning seconds of the second round.  Pickney wobbled to his corner.  The ringside physicians evaluated Pickney's condition between rounds and ruled him unfit to continue.  Hurd is now 2-0 and gets his first pro knockout.  Pickney now falls to 1-4-2, two KO's.

Forestville, MD super lightweight Tyrek "I.G.B. (I Get Busy)" Irby won a four-round unanimous decision over Waldorf, MD's Lamont White.  Irby established his jab early and often throughout the contest.  White switched from southpaw to conventional often to try and confuse Irby but Irby was able to stick to his game plan and win a shutout (40-36) over the very durable White.  Irby's record per Boxrec is 2-0, one KO.  FightFax lists Irby's record as 4-2, two KO's because they include Irby's appearances in the World Series of Boxing as an amateur.  Irby was 2-2, one KO in the WSB. White is now 0-6.

The best bout of the night may have been the curtain-raising contest in which Gregory "Glizzy" Clark of Washington, DC won a tough four-round split decision over Patrick "New Era" Rivera of Edgewood, MD in a great bout of super middleweights.  Rivera took the early advantage in the contest as he landed some punishing shots.  By the end of the second round, Clark was able to turn the tide of the bout by hitting Rivera with some solid shots with his right hand.  Clark was able to get the nod on the cards of judges David Braslow and John Gradowski (39-37) while Ken Chevalier scored the bout for Rivera (39-37).  Clark evens his record with the win at 1-1 while Rivera is now 2-1, one KO.

The matchmakers for the card were promoter Marshall Kauffman and Ross Molovinsky.  The ring announcer was Henry "Discombobulating" Jones.

Quarles, Rodriguez Travel To Philadelphia, PA March 11!

Two Northern Virginia boxers will be involved on a King's Promotions card on Saturday, March 11 at the Sugar House Casino in Philadelphia, PA.

In the main event, "The Pride of Alexandria" Brandon Quarles returns to action in an eight-round middleweight contest against Tyrone "Young Gun" Brunson of Philadelphia.  Quarles (18-3-1, nine KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision over veteran Marcos Primera on June 25 in Greensboro, NC.  Quarles has won five in a row.

Brunson (23-6-2, 22 KO's) set a world record for most consecutive first-round knockouts with 19 to start his pro career.  Brunson's first unanimous decision win came against Primera -- an eight-rounder -- in October of 2009.   Brunson is 3-6-1 in his last 10 bouts.

In another bout on the card, Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez of Haymarket will face off with David Gonzales of Philadelphia in a six-round bout.  Rodriguez (6-6-1, five KO's) will be looking to break a four-bout losing streak.  In his last outing, Rodriguez lost by seventh-round TKO to Mykal Fox on November 5 in Fort Washington, MD.  Gonzales (8-1-2, two KO's) will look to bounce back from suffering his first pro loss, a first-round KO loss to Samuel Teah on November 11 in Chester, PA.

Travis Reeves Travels To Australia To Vie For IBF International Light Heavyweight Title!

Baltimore, MD light heavyweight Travis "Seveer" Reeves will travel to Eatons Hill, Queensland, Australia to challenge Australian Trent Broadhurst for the IBF International Light Heavyweight title on Saturday, March 18th.

Reeves (13-2-2, seven KO's) was one of our Beltway Prospects of the Year selections in 2016 as he won one state and one regional title. On May 14th in Timonium, MD, Reeves scored an eighth-round TKO over Larry Pryor to win the Maryland State Cruiserweight title then dropped down in weight to capture the USBO Light Heavyweight title with a second-round knockout of Aaron Quattrocchi on November 12th in Baltimore.

Broadhurst (20-1, 12 KO's) is no stranger to regional title bouts. After winning the WBA Oceania and the IBF Pan Pacific Light heavyweight titles, Broadhurst captured the IBF International title with a seventh-round technical decision win over Rob Powdrill in November of 2015 in Mansfield, Queensland, Australia. Broadhurst scored a third-round TKO over Nader Hamdan on February 3 in North Adelaide, Australia.  The Reeves bout will be the first defense of his IBF International title.

Boxing To Make Debut At MGM National Harbor Casino!

We are hearing that boxing will make its debut at the MGM National Harbor Casino in Oxon Hill, MD in the very near future. In fact, one date already seems to be set.

ESPN.com's Dan Rafael is reporting that WBO Super Featherweight champion Vasyl "Hi-Tech" Lomachenko and WBA Super Featherweight titleholder Jason "El Canito" Sosa will meet in a unification bout on Saturday, April 8 at the new facility.  This will be a Top Rank promoted card that will also feature local undefeated super lightweight contender Mike "Yes, Indeed" Reed of Waldorf, MD in his first 10-round contest.  Reed is currently ranked sixth in the world by the WBO.

However, that may not be the first boxing date at the new casino. There are some reports that the March 11th title defense for WBC Featherweight champion "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. against interim champ Oscar Escandon will also take place at the MGM National Harbor Casino.  Recently, the WBC said that the bout would take place on the February 18th card in Cincinnati, OH.  However, representatives for Russell are adamant in saying that the bout will take place at the MGM.  We will keep you posted.
