Williams Scores Devastating Second-Round Knockout In California!

Thomas "Top Dog" Williams scored the biggest win of his career tonight in Carson, CA as he registered a devastating  second-round knockout of Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez at the StubHub Center.

The two went toe-to-toe on the Fox Network before Williams landed a crushing left that sent Rodriguez to the canvas.  The bout was stopped at 2:59 of the second.

With the win, Williams is now 20-1, 14 KO's while Rodriguez falls to 28-2, 19 KO's.

Also on the card, Phil Jackson Benson was stopped in the second round by undefeated David Benavidez at 2:07.  Jackson Benson is now 16-3, 15 KO's and Benavidez remains undefeated at 14-0, 13 KO's.

Jones Makes VERY Short Work Of Slade!

Latondria Jones needed just 18 seconds to stop Kamika Slade.  Jones landed one right hand that caused Slade to turn her head and walk towards the Jones corner.

Referee Kenny Chevalier stopped the bout almost immediately.  Jones is now 3-0, two KO's.  Slade loses her pro debut.

We will recap the rest of the card later this evening.

Grove Gets Unanimous Decision In Pro Debut!

Keegan Grove has won his pro debut with a four-round unanimous decision over Anthony Napunyi.  Grove landed solid shots with both hands but could not move the veteran Napunyi.  Midway through the fourth round, Grove suffered a cut over his right eye from what looked like an accidental headbutt.

Grove won by shutout (40-36) on all three cards.  Napunyi falls to 10-16, five KO's.

Up next:  Women's action as Latondria Jones of Las Vegas, NV by way of DC will take on Kamika Slade of Reidsville, NC. Four two-minute rounds, junior middleweights.

Aleem And Jackson Battle To Four-Round Draw!

Moshea Aleem and Martez Jackson battled to a four-round draw in our opening contest here at the DC Armory.

Aleem, in his first bout in more than two years, got off to a slow start as Jackson landed good left hooks.  Aleem came back and landed solid shots at times throughout the bout.  All three judges scored the bout a draw, 38-38.

Aleem is now 4-0-1, two KO's.  Jackson is now 2-0-2, one KO.

Next up: The pro debut of Keegan "Sandman" Grove of Frederick, MD.  Grove will battle Anthony Napunyi of Canal Point, FL by way of Kenya.  Four rounds, lightweights.

Beltway Light Heavies Williams, Jackson Benson, Compete On Card April 30 In California!

Saturday, April 30 will be a big Beltway day.  Not only do we have the super middleweight championship doubleheader at the DC Armory as well as the Regional Golden Gloves at Rosecroft Raceway, we also have two locals competing on a card at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA and one of those bouts will be nationally televised on Fox.

Fort Washington, MD's Thomas "Top Dog" Williams, Jr. will be in the 10-round televised co-feature bout when he takes on Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez of Worcester, MA by way of the Dominican Republic.  Williams (19-1, 13 KO's) is coming off a second-round TKO victory over Umberto Savigne on November 13 in Biloxi, MS.  Rodriguez (28-1, 19 KO's) also fought his last bout on the November 13 card in Biloxi and knocked out Michael Seals in the third round. Both men in a recent conference call said that this bout would not go the distance.  The telecast will begin at 8 PM ET.

In a non-televised contest on this card, Landover, MD's "The Real Deal" Phil Jackson Benson will battle undefeated David "Red Flag" Benavidez of Phoenix, AZ in an eight-round encounter.  Benson (16-2, 15 KO's) bounced back from his knockout loss to Darnell Boone in April of last year by scoring a third-round TKO over Jinner Guerrero on August 28 in DC.   The 19-year-old Benavidez (13-0, 12 KO's) has knocked out his last five opponents including a second-round knockout of Kevin Cobbs on January 19 in Los Angeles, CA. Eleven of Benavidez's 12 KO's have come in either the first or second round.

Card Looks Complete For Super Middleweight Championship Doubleheader April 30 at DC Armory!

The Mayweather Promotions card that will be held on Saturday, April 30 at the DC Armory looks to be complete.  The card is highlighted by two world super middleweight title bouts that will be shown on Showtime.

WBC 168-Pound champion Badou Jack "The Ripper" of Las Vegas, NV by way of Stockholm, Sweden (20-1-1, 12 KO's) will make his second defense of his title against former IBF world champion Lucian Bute of Laval, Quebec, Canada by way of Peches, Romania (32-3, 25 KO's). Current IBF champion James "Chunky" DeGale of London, United Kingdom (22-1, 14 KO's) will also defend his title for the second time when he takes on Rogelio "Porky" Medina of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico (36-6, 30 KO's).  Both bouts are slated for 12 rounds.

Frankly, there is not a strong Beltway presence on this card.   There are boxers who have ties to the area, however many are either starting out their careers, making returns to action or are originally from the area but no longer live here.

Making his pro debut on this card will be DC-based lightweight Keegan "Sandman" Grove, one of the latest Al Haymon signees from the Beltway region.  Grove will take on Anthony Napunyi of Canal Point, FL by way of Kenya.  Napunyi (14-18, seven KO's) makes his second straight appearance this month at the DC Armory.  Napunyi lost a four-round unanimous decision to Gerald Tucker on the April 1 card.

The card will also mark the return of Richmond, VA super welterweight Moshea Aleem who will battle fellow undefeated boxer Martez Jackson of Valdosta, GA in a four-round contest.  Aleem (4-0, two KO's) returns to boxing after a two-year hiatus in which his last bout was a four-round unanimous decision over Eddie Cordova in April of 2014 in Rancho Mirage, CA. Aleem is the older brother of Immanuwel Aleem who just won a bout on national television last week.  Jackson (2-0-1, one KO) competes out of Georgia for the first time, having stopped Bilah Barnes in the second round on February 20 in Macon.

In a four-round female middleweight contest, Latondria Jones of Las Vegas, NV battles debuting Kamika Slade of Virginia.  Jones (2-0, one KO) was born in DC, however, her family moved to South Carolina when she was eight years old.  Jones is reportedly the first female boxer to turn pro out of the Mayweather Boxing gym in Las Vegas.  Jones's last bout saw her win a four-round unanimous decision over Latashia Burton on February 16 in Las Vegas.

In a 10-round middleweight bout, Christopher Pearson of Trotwood, OH will take on returning Joshua Okine of Silver Spring, MD by way of Accra, Ghana.  Pearson (13-1, 10 KO's) looks to bounce back from suffering his first loss -- an eight-round unanimous decision to Eric Walker on December 18 in Las Vegas.  Okine (28-6-1, 17 KO's) fought on the April 1 card at the Armory and lost an eight-round unanimous decision to Demond Nicholson.  Okine was the first boxer to take Nicholson the distance in a bout.

Former world lightweight contender Sharif "The Lion" Bogere of Las Vegas by way of Kampala, Uganda will face off with Samuel "Bruno" Amoako who is also from Silver Spring by way of Accra, Ghana.  Bogere (27-1, 1 NC, 19 KO's)  had a no-contest in his last bout against Daniel Ruiz on August 15 in Quintana Roo, Mexico when Ruiz caught a shot in the back of the head in the second round and could not continue.  Bogere's only loss came when he challenged Richar Abril for the WBA Lightweight title in March of 2013.  Bogere lost a 12-round unanimous decision.  Amoako (21-9, 15 KO's) will be looking to break a five-bout losing streak that includes a six-round unanimous decision loss to Mike Reed on March 18 in Philadelphia, PA.

Light heavyweight Carlos Gongora of Brooklyn, NY by way of Esmeraldas, Ecuador will be in a six-round contest against Zachariah Kelley of Earlsboro, OK.  Gongora (4-0, three KO's) is coming off a fourth-round stoppage of Derrick Adkins on January 16 in Brooklyn.  Kelley (5-14, five KO's) has lost his last three bouts, all by knockout.

The doors open at the Armory at 5 PM ET and the first bout will be at 5:45.  The Showtime telecast gets underway at 10 PM ET.

Five Beltway Boxers Scheduled To Compete in Atlantic City April 29!

Five Beltway Boxers will be on a card at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ on Friday, April 29.

Crofton, MD heavyweight Luther "Lights Out" Smith has his first road bout as he takes on Solomon Maye of New Haven, CT in a four-round contest.  Smith (4-0, four KO's) is coming off a second-round TKO of Charlemagne Jones on February 27 in Washington, DC.  Maye (1-5-1, one KO) is coming off a loss and a draw to Jean Pierre Augustin in April and July of 2015.

Baltimore-based heavyweight Alando Pugh will take on undefeated "Brutal" Brendan Barrett of Little Egg Harbor, NJ in a four-round encounter.  Pugh, a native of DC, (1-7-1, one KO) last fought on the February 27 DC card and lost a tough four-round split decision to Wesley Triplett.  Barrett (3-0-2, three KO's) battled to a six-round draw with Daniel Pasciolla on February 19 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Welterweight Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez of Haymarket, VA will be in a six-round contest against Anthony "Juice" Young of Atlantic City.  Rodriguez (6-4-1, five KO's) has lost two straight including a six-round unanimous decision to Yurii Polischuk on October 23 in DC.  Young (11-2, five KO's) will look to bounce back from losing by fifth-round TKO to Skender Halili on February 19 in Atlantic City.

In the cruiserweight division, there is a battle of young, undefeated boxers as Darnell "The Unknown" Pierce of Frederick, MD (3-0) battles Hafiz Montgomery of Toms River, NJ (2-0, one KO) in a four-round bout.  Pierce recently moved to the Beltway from Texas where he fought all three of his pro bouts.  Pierce is coming off a four-round majority decision win over Tomas Dorsey in April of 2015 in Stafford, TX.  Montgomery scored a first-round knockout of Devon Mosley on November 20 in Philadelphia, PA in his last bout.

Also, DC super middleweight Jessie Singletary (0-1) looks for his first win against Chris Thomas of Beachwood, NJ (1-0) in another four-rounder.  Singletary lost his pro debut by four-round unanimous decision to Jerome Featherstone on December 12 in Baltimore, MD.  Thomas won his pro debut by four-round unanimous decision to Greg Thomas on March 20 in Rahway, NJ.

DC super lightweight Antonio "Teflon" Magruder is now off this card due to an injury suffered in training.

Wade Falls In Two to Golovkin In Inglewood!

Dominic "Lights Out" Wade offered very little resistance to Gennady "Triple G" Golovkin tonight at the Forum in Inglewood, CA as he was knocked out in two rounds in front of a partisan, sellout crowd and a national television (HBO) audience.

The Largo, MD middleweight tried to land shots against Golovkin in the first round but it was quickly apparent that Wade did not have the power to move the native of Kazakhstan backward.  Late in the first round, Golovkin hit Wade with a right hand behind the ear and dropped him.

Golovkin finished the show with two knockdowns in the second round, the second coming from a picture-perfect right hand to Wade's face.  Referee Jack Reiss, who gave Wade every opportunity to continue in the bout, reached the count of 10 and the bout was stopped at 2:37.

The loss was Wade's first as a pro and he is now 18-1, 12 KO's.  Golovkin, who remains the WBA, IBF and the interim WBC Middleweight champion, is now 35-0, 32 KO's and has knocked out his last 22 opponents.

(Photo by Leo Wilson/Premier Boxing Champions)

Richmond, VA middleweight Immanuwel Aleem won a brutal eight-round unanimous decision over Jonathan Cepeda of The Bronx, NY in a nationally-televised (FS1) bout Tuesday night at the Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, PA.

The judge's scorecards said that Aleem won the bout handily (79-73 across the board) but the bout itself was incredibly tough as both men landed crushing blows.  Aleem managed to land more of the brutal shots but somehow Cepeda managed to stay upright and land solid punches of his own.  This was the second straight eight-round decision Aleem has won and he remains undefeated with a record of 16-0, nine KO's. Cepeda, who was competing for the first time since February of 2015, falls to 17-2, 15 KO's.

Aleem's older brother, Moshea, will return to action on the Mayweather Promotions card on Saturday, April 30 at the DC Armory when he takes on Martez Jackson (2-0-1, one KO) of Valdosta, GA in a four-round bout.  Moshea Aleem, a super welterweight (4-0, two KO's), returns after a two-year absence.  We will have more on the April 30 card later this week.

Gary Russell, Jr. Defends WBC Title With Second-Round KO; Brother Antonio Scores Second-Round Stoppage on Undercard; Hawkins Wins By Sixth-Round TKO In Vegas; Corley Drops Majority Decision In Mexico!

An overall successful night for Beltway Boxers on the road on Saturday.  Let's start at the Foxwoods in Mashantucket, CT where Capitol Heights, MD's "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. made the first successful defense of his WBC Featherweight championship with a crushing second-round TKO over Patrick "The Punisher" Hyland of Dublin, Ireland.  The bout was shown on Showtime.

Russell used his trademark speed to simply overpower Hyland and knock him down three times in the second to win the contest. The bout was stopped at 1:33.  Russell is now 27-1, 16 KO's while Hyland drops to 31-2, 15 KO's.

On the undercard, Russell's younger brother, Antonio, began his 2016 campaign with a second-round stoppage of his own against Alberto Serna of Mexico.  Antonio Russell, the 2015 Beltway Boxing Rookie of the Year, dropped Serna twice with right hooks in the first round, then landed a quick combination to finish the bout at 39 seconds of the second.  Antonio Russell is now 6-0, five KO's while Serna is 2-5, one KO.

Meanwhile at the D Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV, Baltimore, MD welterweight Malik "Iceman" Hawkins put on a punishing display en route to a sixth-round TKO of Errol "The Spider" Sidney of New Orleans, LA.  Hawkins kept Sidney off-balance with brutal left jabs and right hooks. Hawkins continually worked Sidney into corners -- so much so that hall of fame pro wrestling announcer Jim Ross, who called the bout for the CBS Sports Network, said that Sidney was in the corner so much, he would have to pay property tax.

Hawkins finished the job in the sixth with a crushing right uppercut that dropped Sidney to the canvas.  Referee Jay Nady stopped the bout at 1:02.  Hawkins remains undefeated at 7-0, six KO's.  Sidney is now 6-2-2, two KO's.

At the Gimnasio Nuevo León Unido in Monterrey, Mexico, former WBO Junior Welterweight champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley lost a 12-round majority decision to Adrian "Diamante" Estrella of Monterrey.  The bout was for Estrella's interim WBC Latino Lightweight title.

In an interesting situation, open scoring was used for this bout and after eight rounds, the scoring had the contest 80-72, 77-76 and 78-74 for Estrella. In round nine, Corley dropped Estrella with a right hand. Estrella survived the round and was pretty much on his bicycle for the rest of the fight. In the end, judges saw it 114-114 and 117-112, 116-111 for Estrella.

Corley falls to 44-27-1, 26 KOs while Estrella rises to 26-1, 23 KOs.

Maryland State Title Bouts Highlight May 14 Card in Timonium!

Two Maryland State title bouts will be the featured attractions during the Shawstyle Promotions/Shabazz Brothers card on Saturday, May 14 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium.

In a 10-round contest for the state light heavyweight title, Baltimore's Travis "Seveer" Reeves will face off against Frederick's Larry "Hitman" Pryor.  Reeves (11-2-2, five KO's) is working on an eight-bout winning streak which includes a first-round stoppage of Anthony Caputo Smith in his last outing on December 12 in Baltimore.  Reeves scored the 2015 Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year on July 9 when he knocked out Samer Barakat at the Tall Cedars Hall in Parkville.

Pryor (9-13, five KO's) has lost four in a row, all to undefeated competition that had a combined record of 51-0-2.  Pryor lost an eight-round unanimous decision to Travis Peterkin in his last contest on March 30 in New York City.

The Maryland Super Featherweight title contest will be a 10-round affair between Tyrell "Da Show Shocka" Samuel of Baltimore and Joshua "Dynamite" Davis of Catonsville. Samuel (16-6-1, seven KO's) returned to action after a 15-month absence and scored a fourth-round TKO over Victor Vasquez on October 2 in Philadelphia, PA.  Samuel is no stranger to state title bouts -- he is a former Maryland State Super Featherweight champion, winning the title with a 10-round unanimous decision over Ron Boyd in November of 2008 in Glen Burnie.

Davis (10-1, four KO's) has won six straight bouts since suffering his only loss in September of 2013.  Davis last fought on November 12 and won a four-round unanimous decision over Justin Lopez in Cockeysville, MD.  This will be Davis's first scheduled 10-round contest.

The undercard is also starting to come together.  DC flyweight Tyrieshia "Lady Tyga" Douglas will take on Anahi Torres of Mexico in an eight-round contest.  Douglas (10-1, four KO's) won a 10-round unanimous decision over Nydia Feliciano on November 12.  Torres (13-13-1, two KO's) will try to bounce back from suffering a six-round unanimous decision loss to Jessica Nery Plata on February 13 in Queretaro, Mexico.

Former World Champ Corley Says He's An 'Impossible' Test For Estrella April 16 In Mexico!

Former world champion DeMarcus “Chop-Chop” Corley (44-26-1, 26 KOs) says WBC #10 lightweight Adrián “Diamante“ Estrella (25-1, 23 KOs) made a big mistake in selecting him as an opponent this Saturday, April 16 at the Gimnasio Nuevo León Unido in Monterrey, Mexico.

“I think the style of Estrella helps greatly for me to come out victorious,” said Corley in a press release. “He’s a very static fighter who has power but doesn’t move much and that’s where my skill and footwork will help me win this fight and beat a world ranked contender helping me get back to the top.

“I’m an impossible test for the Mexican. He doesn’t have what it takes to defeat me because I dare say he won’t even land a blow and he’ll finally despair and give up.”

Local Prospects Are Successful In Springfield!

A number of Beltway Boxing prospects won bouts Saturday night on the Jeter Promotions card at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.

Baltimore, MD cruiserweight "Slick" Nick Kisner won a six-round unanimous decision over Dan "The Disciple" Shull of Winchester, VA.  Kisner showed good hand speed and accuracy throughout the contest as he peppered Shull with left jabs and right hooks throughout the contest.  Shull showed a solid chin but very little offense throughout the night.  All three judges scored the bout a shutout for Kisner, 60-54. Kisner is now 16-2-1, six KO's.  Shull falls to 3-31-1, one KO.

Undefeated Palmer Park, MD lightweight Drayvontay Speed-Rawls scored a sixth-round TKO over Benjamin "Wildcat" Olinga of DC.  Speed-Rawls entered the sixth round for the first time in his pro career and handled it well as he finished the bout with a flourish, swarming Olinga with a flurry of punches that forced referee Michelle Myers to stop the contest at 2:28 of the sixth.  Speed-Rawls is now 6-0-1, four KO's while Olinga drops to 1-12.

Super welterweight Gerome "GQ" Quigley of Gaithersburg, MD put on one of his best performances in a first-round TKO victory over Dennis Sharpe of Bayonne, NJ.  The end came suddenly as Quigley, who was accurate all throughout the round, landed a brutal left hand that stopped Sharpe in his tracks.  Sharpe never went down but slumped against the ropes.  Referee Billy Johnson stopped the contest at 2:35. Quigley remains undefeated at 14-0, 13 KO's.  Sharpe drops to 17-20-4, four KO's.

Fort Washington, MD super bantamweight Marq "Monster Johns scored a third-round TKO over Alan Beeman of Newport, RI.  Johns landed a crushing left hand that opened up a cut along Beeman's nose late in the second round.  As the bell rang to start the third round, neither Beeman's corner nor the ringside doctor could stop the bleeding and the bout was stopped at two seconds of the third.  Johns bounces back from his first pro loss in July of 2015 and raises his record to 7-1-1, six KO's.  Beeman remains winless at 0-12.

"The Baby-Faced Assassin" Yurii Polischuk of Landover, MD scored a fourth-round TKO over Dustin Caplinger of Akron, OH.  After a relatively even two rounds, Polischuk took control in the third round landing solid left hands that put Caplinger on his heels.  Caplinger lost a point for holding in the third.  Polischuk kept up the pressure in the fourth with more brutal lefts that made Caplinger turn his head and made referee Myers stop the contest at 1:54.  Polischuk's record rises to 9-1-1, three KO's.  Caplinger drops to 2-7, one KO.

In a very exciting bout, undefeated Oxon Hill, MD super lightweight Cobia "The Soldier" Breedy won a four-round unanimous decision over Stephon McIntyre of Atlanta, GA. The bout was fought primarily at close quarters and the bout was even early on with both men landing shots.  Gradually, Breedy took control of the bout and landed the more efficient shots but McIntyre stayed with Breedy and proved to be very tough but his offense became more limited as the bout wore on.  Breedy won by shutout (40-36) on all three cards but the bout looked a little closer.  Breedy, a native of Bridgetown, Barbados, remains undefeated at 6-0, four KO's while McIntyre falls to 2-19-2.

In an all-Maryland battle, Rockville middleweight Francisco Bustos won a four-round split decision over Darryl Watkins of Temple Hills.  There was a controversy in the first round as Watkins appeared to knock Bustos down with a right hand.  However, Watkins continued to hit Bustos after Bustos fell to the canvas.  Referee Johnson took a point away from Watkins for the infraction but did not give Watkins credit for knocking down Bustos.  Bustos ended up winning the contest on two of the scorecards 38-37 and 39-36 while Watkins received a score of 38-37 on one scorecard.  Bustos stays undefeated at 4-0, two KO's while Watkins remains winless at 0-4.

Baltimore heavyweight Colby Madison needed only 30 seconds to win his pro debut as he stopped Dominique Barnes of Wilson, NC.  Madison threw a right-hand punch at Barnes that, although it didn't seem to land, sent Barnes to the canvas. Barnes could not -- or did not want to -- get back up and the bout was stopped.  Barnes is now 0-2.

In other bouts on the card, York, PA welterweight Stevie Weimer made a successful debut under the Jeter Promotions managerial banner winning a four-round unanimous decision over Joseph "Trouble" Figueroa of the Bronx, NY.  Weimer showed good boxing skills in his first bout after an almost three-year hiatus from the sport in which he received his college degree from York College.  Weimer threw crisp combinations that didn't hurt Figueroa but did enough to win the bout by shutout on all three scorecards (40-36).  Weimer is now 10-0, two KO's whole Figueroa falls to 11-58-5, three KO's.

"The Young General" Ian Green of Paterson, NJ broke down Gundrick "Sho-Gun" King of Tuscaloosa, AL over five rounds to score a TKO in a middleweight contest.  Green started off patiently, using a solid left jab to set up crisp body and head shots with his right hand.  By the fifth round, Green swarmed King with powerful shots that forced referee Myers to stop the bout at 2:49.  Green bounced back from suffering his first pro loss in January and his record is now 9-1, seven KO's.  King drops to 18-17, 11 KO's.

Flyweight Matthew "Diamond Boy" Griego of Albuquerque, NM knocked out Concord, NC's Jordan Simmons in the first round. The 19-year-old Griego knocked down Simmons twice in the first round before the bout was halted at 1:32.  Griego is 4-0, four KO's.  Simmons is 0-2.

In the opening contest of the card, Zsolt Daranyi, Jr. of Toronto, Canada remained perfect with a first-round stoppage of Marqus "Goose" Jackson of Atlanta, GA.  After a short feeling out process, Daranyi hit Jackson with a crushing right hand to the body that stopped the contest at 1:09.  Daranyi is now 8-0, eight KO's while 8-0, eight KO's while Simmons is 0-2.

DC Commission Rules On Judging Snafu!

The District of Columbia Boxing And Wrestling Commission has made a ruling based on their investigation into the strange scoring of judge Lloyd Scaife during the Luis Ortiz-Tony Thompson bout on March 5 at the DC Armory.

Scaife only had Ortiz winning by one point after the first five rounds despite Ortiz knocking down Thompson twice during that five-round period.  Ortiz would knock out Thompson in the sixth round.

In a statement, the Commission found "significant discrepancies” in the scoring of the bout that were the result of "human error” rather than anything malicious. Thus, no disciplinary action will be taken against Scaife.

According to RingTV.com's Mitch Abramson, the commission also said, “These findings were discussed with Mr. Scaife, who has acknowledged the errors and agrees with this determination of cause. While the Commission recognizes that these errors led to a significant discrepancy in one of the scorecards for the fight in question, it also acknowledges that these errors did not impact the final outcome of the fight.”

"Based upon the facts obtained through this investigation, the Commissions is comfortable with its finding that human error occurred and considers this matter concluded.  No further actions will be taken.”

Abramson is also reporting that Scaife, who has been judging bouts since the mid 1990's, has retired as a judge.

The April 1st telecast of the Adrien Broner-Ashley Theophane bout at the DC Armory set a viewership record for Spike TV who televised the card.

The main event fight averaged 1.013 million viewers, making it the most-watched boxing match in Spike TV network history.  The overall Spike telecast on Friday, which included undefeated Baltimore boxer Gervonta Davis, averaged 873,000 viewers, also a Spike network record for a boxing event.

The previous record was the Amir Khan-Chris Algieri bout on May 29 in Brooklyn, NY.  The bout, won by Khan by 12-round unanimous decision, averaged one million viewers.

Bates, Grove Sign With Major Promoters!

Two more Beltway Boxers have signed with major national promoters.

DC featherweight Marcus "Dreamcatcher" Bates has become the latest local boxer to sign with King's Promotions of Reading, PA.  Bates (3-0-1, three KO's). will return to action in May after a two-year layoff.

Bates has not fought since winning scoring a fourth-round TKO over Edgardo Marin in October of 2014 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD. Bates's four-round draw with Stephon McIntyre in January of 2014 was one of the best bouts of that year.

King's Promotions head Marshall Kauffman is very high on his latest find.

"Marcus is a good prospect.  I have seen him in action and he has a lot of ability.  He is still very young and I look forward to see him develop over the next few years and I think he has a very high ceiling as a fighter."

Bates joins fellow Beltway Boxers Mykal Fox, Thomas Snow, and another recent signee Devar Ferhadi under the King's Promotions banner.

Also, Al Haymon has another Beltway Boxer under contract.  DC-based lightweight Keegan "Sandman" Grove will be the second straight recent boxer to sign with Haymon before his first pro contest, which is scheduled to come later this month.

The 18-year-old Grove is a former regional Silver Gloves champion who has competed in the ring with the likes of fellow locals Gervonta Davis and Gary Antuanne Russell during his amateur career.

Grove will be trained by noted trainer George Peterson (shown with Grove), a former DC police officer who moved to South Carolina and set up a boxing gym.  Peterson's most famous charge was former world champion Paul "The Punisher" Williams, who recently made a successful debut as a trainer with Justin DeLoach who scored a brutal fourth-round knockout in March.

Grove joins the likes of Davis, Gary Russell, Jr., Jarrett Hurd, Thomas Williams, Jr., Danny Kelly, The Peterson Brothers, David Grayton and Phil Jackson Benson as Haymon signees.  Grove follows Jordan White as a boxer signed by Haymon before his first pro contest.

Beltway Pro Boxing Continues Saturday In Springfield!

The "Superb Spring Of Beltway Boxing" continues this Saturday, April 9 when Jeter Promotions brings another card to the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA that will be loaded with local talent.

Some bouts are already official -- Baltimore, MD cruiserweight "Slick" Nick Kisner will be on the card taking on veteran Dan "The Disciple" Shull of Winchester, VA in a six-round contest.  Kisner (15-2-1, six KO's) bounced back from his nationally-televised 10-round unanimous decision loss to Lateef Kayode in May of 2015 by scoring a fourth round TKO over James Jones on March 11 in Weirton, WVA.

Shull (3-30-1, one KO) will be trying to break a 15-bout losing streak.  Shull is no stranger to the Beltway or to Beltway Boxers -- he has fought the likes of Thomas Williams, Jr., Scott Sigmon, Dale Robeson-El and Steve Wheeler and returns to the ABC Sports Complex for the first time since losing a four-round majority decision to Otgonbayer Daivii in January of 2009.

Other local talent scheduled to be on the card include Gerome Quigley (13-0, 12 KO's), Drayvontay Speed Rawls (5-0-1, three KO's), Cobia Breedy (5-0, four KO's), Francisco Bustos (3-0, two KO's), Marq Johns (6-1-1, five KO's) and Yurii Polischuk (8-1-1, two KO's).  Also on the card will be the first Jeter Promotions managerial signee, Stevie Weimer of York, PA (9-0, two KO's) who returns to the ring after an almost three-year absence.

In other bouts already signed for the card, Ian Green of Paterson, NJ looks to bounce back from suffering his first pro loss when he takes on Gundrick "Sho-Gun" King of Tuscaloosa, AL in a six-round middleweight contest.  Green (8-1, six KO's) lost a six-round majority decision to Devaun Lee on January 27 in New York City.  Green makes his third visit to the ABC Sports Complex, scoring knockout victories in his previous two contests.

King (18-16, 11 KO's) has lost eight in a row, but some of those losses have come against quality competition including Yuri Foreman and former world champion Randall Bailey.

Also on the card, undefeated Easton, PA welterweight Arturo Trujillo will be in a six-round contest against Rynell Griffin of New Orleans, LA.  Trujillo (8-0, five KO's) is coming off a second-round TKO over Jeffrey Wright on February 19 in Atlantic City, NJ.  Two of Trujillo's wins have come against Beltway Boxers -- Trujillo won a four-round unanimous decision over Yurii Polischuk in August of 2013 then scored a third-round TKO over Kevin Womack, Jr. in April of 2014. Both bouts were in Bethlehem, PA.

Griffin (7-24-2, two KO's) will be trying to turn his fortunes around after losing by fourth-round TKO to O'Shaquie Foster on January 16 at the ABC Sports Complex.  The loss was Griffin's ninth in a row.
