Undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. scores a third-round TKO over Christopher "Huracan" Perez of Mexico tonight in front of a nationally-televised Showtime audience at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA.
Russell knocked Perez down four times en route to the stoppage at 1:41 of the third. Russell is now 20-0, 12 KO's. Perez's record falls to 23-3, 14 KO's.

Russell Weighs 127 For Showtime Scrap in California!
Gary Russell, Jr. weighed in at 127 pounds for his 10-round Showtime ShoBox bout against Christopher Perez Saturday night at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA. Perez tipped the scales at 126. The telecast begins at 9 PM ET with the Russell-Perez bout slated to be the second bout on the tripleheader.
July 13 Amateur Card Looks to 'Knock Out Breast Cancer!'
Baltimore Boxing Promotions is having a benefit amateur boxing card to raise money for the American Breast Cancer Foundation. The "Knock Out Breast Cancer" card will be held on Friday, July 13 at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD.
Scheduled to appear in the main event is middleweight Jerome Featherstone of Baltimore who will take on Ryan Watson. A former champion wrestler in high school and college, Featherstone is undefeated since putting on boxing gloves less than a year ago. Featherstone won the East Coast Middleweight title defeating Darius Vann earlier this month on the last Baltimore Boxing card.
There will be a co-feature bout between local ladies Amelia Moore and Floria Hani. This will be a rematch in which the winner will receive the "Knockout Breast Cancer championship."
Also slated to be on the card are multi-time national amateur champion Franchon Crews, former Penn State University Boxer A.J. Williams and former Ringside Junior World Champion Joe Veazey. There are 10 bouts scheduled for the card.
Tickets begin at $25 and can be purchased by calling 410-375-9175 or going to www.baltimoreboxing.com. The link is in the promoters section of the blog. Ticket holders are encouraged to wear pink for the event.

Rahman Title Bid Called Off Because of Hand Injury!
Former two-time world heavyweight champion Hasim "The Rock" Rahman's bid for a third title has been called off because Rahman suffered a hand injury in training. The bout against WBA champion Alexander Povetkin was slated for Saturday, July 14 in Hamburg, Germany. No word on whether Rahman will get another opportunity, even though he was the mandatory challenger.
L. Peterson Stripped of WBA Title?
We are hearing word from multiple sources that the World Boxing Association (WBA) will strip Lamont Peterson of his WBA Super Lightweight title that he won on December 10th in DC.
According to Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, the WBA will declare the title vacant because of the recent Peterson drug test situation and make the July 14 title bout between former champ Amir Khan and current WBC titleholder Danny Garcia a unification bout.
There is no official word from the WBA on this situation as of yet. Peterson still holds the IBF version of the title pending a meeting with the International Boxing Federation later this year. Sources tell BATB that barring any surprises, the IBF will allow Peterson to keep that title.

July 14 Keystone Card Starting to Take Shape!
The matchups can be announced for the Saturday, July 14 Keystone Boxing card at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.
The main event will featured undefeated DC welterweight Dusty Harrison in a scheduled six-round contest against veteran Reggie "Two-Guns" Nash of Grand Rapids, MI. Harrison (6-0, three KO's) is coming off a second-round TKO over Joey Ortega on May 12 at the Convention Center.
Harrison will face another veteran in Nash (10-29-1, two KO's) who has faced a who's who of young prospects and contenders between the lightweight and junior middleweight divisions. The list includes Vernon Paris, Steve Upshur Chambers, Contender Champion Grady Brewer, Shamir Reyes and the Beltway's Bayan Jargal. Nash also holds an eight-round split decision win over former world title contender Ivan Robinson.
There is another six-rounder signed for the card as DC-based junior middleweight "King Shango" Ivan Ziglar will battle Jimmy "The Dream" LeBlanc of Weymouth, MA. Ziglar (6-2-1, three KO's) has won his last five bouts, including two straight at the Convention Center. Ziglar scored a fifth-round TKO in his last outing over Eric Burke on the May 12 Convention Center card.
LeBlanc (12-21-4, four KO's) is no stranger to the Beltway region as he has fought three times locally in the last four years, all three times at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. LeBlanc picked up his last win in November of 2008 when he stopped Luther Smith in the first round. LeBlanc's last two bouts at the Patriot Center ended in second-round TKO's against Jimmy Lange (July 2010) and Michael Stewart (September 2011).
Another bout signed for this event will be the pro debut of long-time amateur Kevin Borders, a junior middleweight from DC. Borders will face Eric Merian, another debuting boxer from Columbia, SC.

Fairfax, VA junior welterweight Todd "White Lightning" Wilson remains undefeated with a six-round unanimous decision over John Willoughby of Selma, AL. Wilson won despite possibly breaking his left hand in the second round and suffering a cut along his right eye in the third. Wilson is now 14-0, four KO's while John Willoughby is now 3-13, two KO's.
Staunton, VA junior welterweight Christian "The Real Deal" Steele won a four-round majority decision over Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez. Steele won by two scores of 39-37 to even his record to 3-3, one KO while Rodriguez loses his second straight bout at Smith Gymnasium and falls to 4-2-1, four KO's.
Upper Marlboro, MD heavyweight Duane Mobley recovered from a first-round knockdown to stop Baltimore, MD's Kevin "Journeyman" Johnson at 1:36 of the third round. Mobley is now 3-0, two KO's while Johnson is now 3-5, two KO's.
Richmond, VA super middleweight Immanuel Aleem made his pro debut a successful one with a first-round TKO of Lynchburg, VA's Jess "Thunder" Noriega. Aleem used a punishing body shot to stop Noriega at 2:04 of the first. Noriega is 0-3.

Baltimore junior middleweight Cecil McCalla remained undefeated with a third-round knockout of Andre Baker of Lumberton, NC Saturday night at the Marriott Southern Crescent Hotel in Greensboro, NC. No details on the win but the victory is McCalla's third straight in North Carolina and raises his overall record to 15-0, six KO's. Baker's record falls to either 8-36-2, two KO's (if you believe BoxRec) or 15-19, four KO's if you follow the promotion's press release.
Also on the card, Stafford, VA heavyweight "The People's Champion" Jonathan Felton was stopped in the fourth round by undefeated Miami, FL prospect John Wesley Nofire. Wilson Wins Six-Round Unanimous Decision!
Todd Wilson remains undefeated with a six-round unanimous decision scoring a shutout over John Willoughby. All three judges scored the bout 60-54. Wilson is now 14-0, four KO's. Post-Fight coming up but for now..good night from Arlington!
Snow Wins By Fourth-round TKO in Florida!
This result from Hollywood, FL: Thomas "KO" Snow scores a fourth-round TKO over Ernie Marquez at the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe and Casino in Hollywood, FL. Snow stopped Marquez at 46 seconds of the fourth. Snow is now 16-1, 10 KO's.
Meanwhile here in Arlington, Todd Wilson is in control throughout the contest as we are midway through the third. This, despite suffering a nasty cut along the right eye as a result of a John Willoughby head butt. Wilson got through the third with no problem, however.

Mobley Survives Knockdown to Stop Johnson!
Duane Mobley survived a first-round Knockdown to stop Kevin Johnson at 1:36 of the third. Johnson, living up to his nickname, Journeyman, took this bout Friday as in yesterday.
However, Johnson landed a brutal right hand inside that dropped Mobley. Johnson then got gassed and Mobley eventually got the stoppage.
Co-feature in the ring: Juan Rodriguez vs. Christian Steele.
Aleem Makes Short Work In Pro Debut!
Immanuel Aleem makes quick work of Jess Noriega, stopping him at 2:04 of the first round. Aleem landed a punishing body shot that stopped Noriega in his tracks. Referee Cortone stopped the contest.

Abingdon, MD 201+pounder Calvin Countess may have been a late addition to the Junior Olympics National Championship roster, but he ended up being the only boxer from the Beltway region to win a national title at the Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, AL!
Countess defeated Elijah Grady of New Town, ND by a 14-9 decision to win the 201+ pound division. Countess was pretty impressive throughout the tournament winning his first bout by a 19-2 score. His semi-final win was a 15-13 decision followed by his championship win on Friday.
Four other Beltway Boxers won silver medals at the tournament with three of the four losing their championship bids by one point. Keeshawn Williams of DC won the silver medal in the 95-pound division, falling to Christopher Colbert of Brooklyn, NY, 16-15. Another DC boxer -- Jalonte Cole -- lost to another Brooklyn boxer -- Christian Bermudez -- by a 13-12 decision in the 125-pound weight class. Also, Jason Bell of District Heights, MD lost a 23-22 decision to Jazavian Palmer of Lubbock, TX in the 165-pound division.
Also, in the 176-pound title bout, Daquan Johnson of Capitol Heights, MD lost a 12-8 decision to Elvis Figueroa of New Haven, CO.

Five Beltway Amateurs Move Into Junior Olympics National Finals!
The Beltway region will send five boxers into Friday's finals of the Junior Olympics National Championships at the Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, AL.
During tonight's evening session, Jason Bell of District Heights, MD won his semi-final bout at 165 pounds with a close 11-10 decision over Cameron Grady of Mandan, ND. In another close call, Calvin Countess of Abingdon, MD won his semi in the 201-pound class, defeating Darmani Rock of Philadelphia, PA, 15-13. Keeshawn Williams Advances to 95-Pound Final at Junior Olympics!
Moments ago in today's semifinals of the Junior Olympic National Championships at the Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, AL, DC 95-pounder Keeshawn Williams moved into the finals of his division with a 22-13 victory over Slade Corvin of Chattanooga, TN. Williams showed a lot of speed of hand and foot to win the bout. Williams will face Christopher Colbert of Brooklyn, NY in tomorrow's final.

Roger Leonard, Older Brother of Sugar Ray, Writes New Book!
However, Roger Leonard says in his new book "In the Shadow of a Champ," that he was fighting two opponents -- one in the ring and another opponent, drugs. Roger Leonard is having two book signings in the area -- On Friday, June 22, Leonard will be at Prince George's Community College's Rennie Forum in the Largo Student Center, 301 Largo Road, Largo, MD from 6:30 PM to 9 PM. Then on Saturday, June 23, Leonard will be at the Stoney River Steaks restaurant in Annapolis Mall from 12:30 to 3 PM. Yes, Roger's younger brother, Ray, will be at both events!
In the interest of full disclosure, I've gotten to know Roger well over the years as we go to the same church. Roger has been sober for almost three decades and his story is one you will definitely want to read. It is truly inspiring!

Rahman July 14 Title Bid Returns to England!
Fightnews.com is reporting that the WBA Heavyweight title bout between champion Alexander Povetkin and former champ Hasim Rahman will take place in London, England on Saturday, July 14 as the co-feature to the grudge match between heavyweights David Haye and Dereck Chisora.
Originally, the British Boxing Board of Control (BBoC) had nixed the Haye-Chisora bout and plans were made to move the bout to Germany but it looks like the Luxembourg Boxing Federation will sanction the Haye-Chisora bout in London as both men recently received licenses from that country.
Meanwhile, it looks like both bouts will be televised on the EPIX cable network -- which means Beltway heavyweights will make back-to-back appearances on that channel. EPIX will also show the championship rematch between Wladimir Klitschko and Tony Thompson on Saturday, July 7 from Berne, Switzerland.

Three More Beltway Boxers Advance at Junior Olympic Nationals!
During the evening session of the Junior Olympic National Championships in Mobile, AL,three more Beltway Boxers advanced to tomorrow's semi-finals. In the 95-pound bracket, Keeshawn Williams of DC won an 18-12 decision over Desmond Jarmon II of Cincinnati, OH. Malik Hawkins of Baltimore, MD won a 17-6 decision over Alexis Saenz of Chicago, IL in the 145-pound bracket. Also, Jason Bell of District Heights, MD won his bout in the 165-pound division with a 29-13 decision over Alejandro Larrando of Prescott, AZ.
However, three locals lost in this session as well. Gary Antuanne Russell of Capitol Heights, MD lost his bout at 119 pounds by a 25-15 decision to Efren Lopez of Fresno, CA. At 101 pounds, Demetrius Young of Bowie, MD fell to Nico Hernandez of Wichita, KS by a 29-8 decision. Baltimore's Scott Falls In 138-Pound JO Bout!
Baltimore, MD's James Scott lost his bout in the 138-pound division of the Junior Olympic National Championships by retirement to Erickson Lubin of Kissimmee, FL. Lubin was completely dominant in the bout, blasting out to a 21-3 first round lead. The bout got progressively worse for Scott until his corner asked the referee to stop the contest in the third round.

DC 125-pounder Jalonte Cole wins his second bout at the Junior Olympic National Championships in Mobile, AL , earning an 11-6 decision over Johnathan Jarabak of Brighton, CO.

In the first bout for a Beltway amateur on the second day of competition at the Junior Olympic National Championships at the Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, AL, Cheverly, MD 114-pounder Francois Scarboro suffers the first loss for a Beltway Boxer. Scarboro lost by third-round disqualification to Da'Reece Crawford of Kansas City, MO.
Scarboro lost numerous points during the bout and the bout was very rough -- at one time flipping Crawford over his back in a tangle. Both boxers hit the floor as they tangled numerous times.

Washington Post Profiles No Xcuse Gym!
Matt Breen of The Washington Post does a nice story on the No Xcuse Boxing Gym in Capitol Heights, MD. Two of the three winners of National Golden Gloves titles -- D'Mitrius Ballard and Jerry Odom -- train out of the gym run by cousins Bernard and Lamont Roach, Sr. Odom was named the fighter of the tournament and the DC squad won the team trophy. Lamont Roach was one of the coaches for the DC Golden Gloves team. Here is the link:

McCalla Returns to North Carolina on June 23!
Undefeated Baltimore, MD junior middleweight Cecil McCalla will make his third straight trip to North Carolina when he faces veteran Andre Baker of Lumberton, NC in a six-round contest on Saturday, June 23 at the Marriott Southern Crescent Hotel Ballroom in Greensboro, NC.
McCalla (14-0, five KO's) last fought on March 30 in Raleigh, NC and won a six-round unanimous decision over Kevin Carter. McCalla has battled in the Tarheel State in four of his last five outings. Hall of Famer Johnson Guests on News Four on Wednesday!
Hall of Famer Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson is slated to appear on the 4:30 PM newscast on WRC-TV Channel 4 on Wednesday, June 20. The three-time, two-division champion has been making some TV rounds this week as he appeared on SportsTalk with Glenn Harris this past Monday night along with his father, Ham.

'Longest Fight' Book Features Baltimore's Joe Gans!
There is a new book out on the first African-American World Boxing Champion -- Baltimore's own Joe Gans -- entitled "The Longest Fight." The book is authored by former long-time Washington Post sports columnist William Gildea and it talks about a bout Gans had on September 3, 1906. Gans faced Oscar "Battling" Nelson in Goldfield, NV in a bout that lasted 42 rounds. Gans won that bout by disqualification because Nelson repeatedly landed low blows. This would be the last "fight to the finish" and championship bouts would eventually be limited to 15 and then 12 rounds.

Beltway Boxers Lose In Newark And El Paso!
A number of Beltway Boxers were involved in some high-profile cards on Saturday. Unfortunately, none of those boxers fared too well.

July Wins Unanimous Decision!
This one may be leading the pack as the Beltway Boxing Fight of the Year. Venroy July wins an eight-round unanimous decision over a very game Justin Howes. Scores were 78-74 (twice) and 77-75. Post fight coming up in a few, but for now --Good Night from Baltimore!
July-Howes Round 8
Eighth round has been a very tough round for both men July was warned by referee Kenny Chevalier for holding but didn't take a point. Neither man gave an inch and the decision should be very interesting. Neither man landed a lot in the round as fatigue took its toll.
Round Seven Another Close One!
Unless something breaks in the final round, this is going to be a close one. July has taken the most punishment in his brief career, but he has given his share as well. Howes has been extremely tough in this one. This will go down to the wire!
Moving through Round 6 -- Anybody's Bout!
Both men are trading some great shots as they head into round seven. Fatigue is starting to show. During a lull in the action where Howes was in a neutral corner, July was breathing heavily. Neither man has been to the seventh round before.
July-Howes Turning Into Fight of the Year Candidate!
Both guys are putting on a great show. July would at times seem to stun his opponent only to have Howes come back and land a gorgeous right hand of his own. This is truly a great contest through five rounds. Can Howes keep in the contest?
Howes Starts Strong, but July Finishes Better in Fourth!
Good matchup here in our main event -- Howes continued his strong work from round three but July ended the round with some strong body shots! Great round both ways!
Howes More Active in Round 3!
Justin Howes had a much better performance in the third round as he came forward very nicely. Howes combined solid body shots with a nice right hand attack as he looked like his nickname -- chopping July against the ropes.
July Dominates in Round 2!
It's been all Venroy July in the second round as his combinations are devastating. Howes has a bloody nose and is walking into shots. Howes is trying to make a night of it but it is a tough one.

Howes is lumbering and July isn't that much faster foot wise. However, July's hands are much faster and he's landing combinations and is doing a lot of damage.
Sensibaugh Wins Majority Decision!
Brady "The Magician" Sensibaugh wins his pro debut with a tough majority decision over Giovanni Vasquez. Sensibaugh used good ring generalship to win the contest. He did take some shots from Vasquez but landed better and harder shots!

In what was a very close contest, Baltimore's Lee Snow landed a crushing right hand that ended the bout against DC's Issa Coulibaly at 1:59 of the fourth round. Both men landed some good shots throughout the contest and the bout could have gone either way until the knockout took place.

Baltimore junior welterweight Kevin "The Scarecrow" Womack, Jr wins at the end of the third as Nalo Leal could not come out for the fourth. The much-taller Womack landed some crushing shots but Leal would not quit. Leal was knocked down at the end of the second but referee Kenny Chevalier said the punch came after the bell.

Good evening from the Clarence H. Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD for tonight's Keystone Boxing Promotions card. This is a card that took a lot of work to get done. Many of the bouts fell out almost literally at the last minute. But it still should be an interesting four-bout card.
The first scheduled contest between Kevin Womack and Nalo Leal is now a six round contest. Womack (3-0, one KO) has never been six rounds against a 20-bout veteran in Leal (4-15-1). Also, seeing Brady Sensibaugh's pro debut will be interesting as well. I've known Sensibaugh for about six years and he knows a lot about the history of boxing, but it will be interesting to see what happens this evening.
Also, the Beltway Boxing Co-Prospect of the Year -- Venroy July -- is on the card. "Hardwork" may have a tough foe in Justin Howes of West Virginia!

There are a number of Beltway Boxing events taking place on Saturday, June 16. There is one pro show and two amateur cards on the docket.
BATB will be blogging live from Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD Saturday night for the Keystone Boxing pro show that will start at 8 PM. We hope to have the weights for the card later today.
There will be an amateur show at Club One Fitness in Millersville, MD beginning at 7:30 PM. Former National Golden Gloves champion Michael Reed is slated to participate on the card. This may be one of the final times to see Reed as an amateur. Jeter Promotions is hosting the card.
There will also be an amateur show at the District Heights Municipal Center on 2000 Marbury Drive in Capitol Heights, MD hosted by the D Block Boxing Gym. That card is slated to begin at 7:30 as well.

Bedford, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon reflects on his loss to Kelly Pavlik this past Friday night in Las Vegas as he sat down with Dhomonique Ricks of Lynchburg TV station WSET Channel 13.

June 16 Du Burns Card Coming Together!
The Keystone Boxing pro card slated for Saturday, June 16 at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD is coming together. There have been a number of changes throughout the weeks but everything should be set by Friday.
The latest change is that undefeated Fort Washington, MD light heavyweight Thomas "Top Dog" Williams, Jr. has been added to the card for a six-round contest against a TBA opponent. Williams replaces Upper Marlboro, MD heavyweight Duane Mobley who was slated to be in a rematch against Norfolk, VA's Dennis Benson. However, Benson suffered an injury and the bout was called off.
It looks like Mobley may be part of the June 23rd card at Fort Myer/Henderson Hall in Arlington, VA.
The main event remains the same -- undefeated Suitland, MD cruiserweight Venroy "Hard Work" July (10-0-2, four KO's) faces Justin "The Lumberjack" Howes of Buckhannon, WVA (13-2, 11 KO's) in a six-round contest.

Sigmon had a difficult job getting inside and when he did, Pavlik made him pay with short shots in close. The nose busted around the fourth round and it didn't get any better. Featherstone Wins East Coast Title!
Jerome Featherstone wins a spirited decision over Darius Vann. A lot of action with both men getting their shots in but towards the end of the bout, both men threw more than they landed. Featherstone wins East Coast Middleweight title.

Gee Wins over Morton!
It wasn't the most technically sound amateur bout eve but Shandra (Shandray) Gee defeats Ryan Morton. A lot of grappling more than jabbing but Gee landed more punches during the contest.
The final bout of the night is coming up as Jerome Featherstone vs. Darius Vann for the East Coast Championship. Both guys are from Baltimore--Featherstone is out of Baltimore Boxing while Vann boxes out of No Limits Gym in Reisterstown.

Yes, we can say good evening from Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD! We are here for the battle between Baltimore and Philadelphia boxers. Right now, I have no idea who is on the card other than Jerome Featherstone and Joey Veazey. We hope to get that list for you soon. We are still a little ways away from starting at this point, so we are behind schedule.
Ironically, the Baltimore Orioles are hosting the Philadelphia Phillies nearby at Camden Yards.

If All Goes Well..We'll Blog Live From Du Burns Arena Tonight!
If the technology is available, we'll be blogging live from Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD for tonight's amateur card between boxers from Baltimore and a group from Philadelphia, PA. The main reason is that this will be the first of two straight boxing cards from Du Burns on consecutive weekends. Next Saturday, June 16 is the Keystone Boxing pro card.
My hope is that this will work this week so I can blog again next week. Also, I will be able to keep tabs on the ESPN2 main event between Scott Sigmon and Kelly Pavlik.
So hopefully in a couple of hours, I'll be blogging live from Baltimore!

Wilson, Jeter Headline 'Bulldog Brawl II' at Fort Myer June 23!
Two very popular Beltway Boxers will be in separate feature bouts on the RBA Promotions "Bulldog Brawl II" card on Saturday, June 23 at Fort Myer/Henderson Hall's Smith Gymnasium in Arlington, VA.
The main event will include undefeated Fairfax, VA junior welterweight Todd "White Lightning" Wilson taking on "The Rochester Reaper" Winston Mathis of Stockbridge, GA by way of Rochester, NY in an eight-round contest.
Wilson (13-0, four KO's) is coming off a fourth-round TKO of Eric Burke on February 25 in Charlotte, NC. Mathis (7-5-1, two KO's) was stopped in his last outing by Chris Algieri on March 31 in Huntington, NY. Mathis is winless in his last three contests.
The co-feature will have Stevensville, MD junior middleweight Tony "Mo Better" Jeter competing in a six-rounder against an opponent to be determined. Jeter (13-3-1, nine KO's) was slated to be in a bout on this date in Fairfax, VA against Jimmy Lange but the card was cancelled due to an injury suffered by Lange.
Also on the card will be Haymarket, VA welterweight Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez who will take on Christian Steele of Staunton, VA in a four-round contest. Rodriguez (4-1-1, four KO's) lost his last bout at Henderson Hall on December 17 when he dropped a four-round unanimous decision to Richie Andrews. Steele (2-3, one KO) won his last outing on April 28 when he knocked out Milton Rogers in the first round in Wilson, NC.
Other locals slated to be on the card are returning Manassas, VA super middleweight Orazio "The Razor" Robinson and undefeated Alexandria, VA middleweight Brandon Quarles (9-0, two KO's).
Making his pro debut on the card will be Richmond, VA super middleweight Immanuel Aleem, a very accomplished boxer who was a former state Golden Gloves champion. Aleem will face Jess Noriega of San Diego, CA (0-2).

The locally-based boxing website Roundobout has video of the bouts from the recent Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic at the Marriott Washington Wardman Park Hotel in DC. Here are a couple from the bouts from the event. 'Too Sharp' Tribute!
This is the week that many Beltway Boxing Fans have been waiting on for a long time! This is the week that former three-time world champion and Beltway Boxing Legend Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson takes his rightful place among the legends in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
There are many great "Too Sharp" moments, including the night Johnson won the IBF Flyweight title on May 4, 1996 in Anaheim, CA when he knocked out Francisco Tejedor in the first round. The image of Tejedor vainly trying to get back up after being knockdown and weeping in despair afterwards is one of the most lasting images I've ever seen.
For this tribute, I want to focus on another classic moment -- one that took place in DC on February 22, 1998. Johnson was making his fifth defense of his title in front of a packed house at the DC Armory and a nationally televised ESPN2 audience. Johnson faced a truly legitimate contender in Arthur "Flash" Johnson, who gave Johnny Tapia fits in losing a 12-round split decision in 1995.
I've recounted the story of how Mark Johnson gave up a substantial amount of money to have the bout in DC and how he had it in his contract that local ring announcer Henry "Discombobulating" Jones would work the event. By the way, the passage of time has led to two situations in the present. One of course, the passing of Johnny Tapia. The other is the post-fight interview. Coincidentally, Johnson and the man conducting the interview -- Al Bernstein -- are in the same class of inductees that will go into the Hall of Fame on Sunday. Another coincidence was the referee for the bout was Joe Cooper, who would of course, be the third man for Lamont Peterson and Amir Khan.
What resulted was truly one of the landmark events in Beltway Boxing History. Let's relive that moment here:

DC Select Team Wins Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic!
The DC Team captured the 2012 Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic by a score of 6-3. Truly however, everyone at the Marriott Washington Wardman Park Hotel in DC benefited from great boxing which also included a tremendous level of sportsmanship. The young Irish boxers were very talented and held their own through the majority of the bouts. Here, once again, are the results:
The bout voted fight of the night by the crowd was Gervonta "Tank" Davis win over Joseph Fitzpatrick at 126 pounds. This was the least competitive bout of the night. Most of the watchers in attendance were not diehard boxing fans, but they enjoyed the skill of the 2012 National Golden Gloves champion from Upton Gym in Baltimore.
My choice for fight of the night was the 111-pound bout between Dwayne Holmes of Diamonds N The Ruff and Conal Quinn. This was, in my opinion, the most competitive bout of the night. Holmes did well enough toward the end of the bout to win it, but many people in the crowd thought Quinn of the Ardoyne Holy Cross gym might have won that one.
The most impressive Irish boxer of the evening was a young man named TJ Waite from the Cairn Lodge Boxing Club. Waite won the first bout for the Visitors Select team and he put on a great show against a very talented boxer from the Beltway region -- Lawrence Singh of the Headbangers Gym -- at 111 pounds. This was a rough bout at times but Waite did a great job hanging in there.

Davis Dominates To Give DC Series Win!
Gervonta "Tank Davis wins the series for Team DC showing great hand speed and accurate punching to defeat Joseph Fitzpatrick at 126 pounds. Davis truly dominated in what was the most lopsided bout of the night. DC wins the series 6-3.
That was the last official bout of the evening. There is a training session going on between Daquan Johnson of Sugar Ray Leonard Gym and Gary Dobbs of Spennymore. No winners named here. We'll come back with the bout voted the fight of the night.

Gaskins Wins Decision To Give DC 5-3 Lead!
Russell Gaskins defeats Jamie Kennedy by decision to give the DC squad a 5-3 lead. Nice performance by Gaskins as he used his power shots very nicely.

Ashton Jones Narrows The Gap for Ireland!
Ashton Jones brings the Irish team within one at 4-3 with a victory over Alfredo Weeks VI. Jones looked like the more polished and experienced boxer in this bout as he definitely landed more shots.

Jackson Wins over Matthews!
DC makes it 4-2 as Malik Jackson wins over Gerard Matthews. Jackson used some strong southpaw skills to make the bout easy for him. By the way, Jackson and the Limelite Gym are the subjects of a forthcoming documentary being put together by students at George Washington University. The film is slated to premiere at the end of the month. Yours truly is honored to be a part of the documentary.

Higginson Defeats Beltway's Peters!
Sean Higginson of the Irish team narrows the score to 3-2, defeating Jordan Peters at 130 pounds. Neither man landed a lot of punches, but Higginson managed to land some in the final round to get the victory.

Michael Peoples Makes it 3-1, DC!
Michael Peoples won a workmanlike decision over Lewis Crocker. This was a back and forth affair as well, but Peoples landed more shots. The last three bouts have been very close as far as activity in the ring (not scoring). The Irish boxers are more than holding their own thus far.

TJ Waite Wins First For Visitors Over Beltway's Singh!
TJ Waite wins the first contest for the visitors from Ireland defeating Lawrence Singh. Really good bout -- Waite is very talented and dropped Singh once during the contest. It was a rough and tumble bout--both young men got tangled up and each boxer lost a point for failing to heed the referee's instructions.

Dwayne Holmes wins the second bout for the DC squad in a tough one over Conal Quinn. A really solid bout that some in the audience though Quinn might have won. Quinn was very aggressive throughout, but Holmes took his best shots and came back stronger. Third bout is Lawrence Singh vs. TJ Waite, also at 111 pounds.

Williams Resting After Six-Hour Surgery!
Paul Williams's promoter says the former two-time world champion is resting after surgery to stabilize his spine. Promoter Dan Goossen told ESPN.com that the surgery lasted 6 1/2 hours.

Armenta Loses Unanimous Decision in Atlantic City!
Silver Spring, MD light heavyweight George "El Gallo" Armenta lost an eight-round unanimous decision to undefeated Dennis Hasson of Philadelphia, PA Friday night at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ.
Armenta lost by scores of 78-74 and 79-73 (twice). Armenta is now 14-9, 11 KO's while Hasson is 14-0, five KO's.

Armenta Weighs 173 For Atlantic City Battle!
George Armenta weighed in at 173 pounds for his eight-round battle with undefeated Dennis Hasson tonight at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Hasson tipped the scales at 175.
