Weights From DC -- Broner Loses Title On Scale!

Adrien Broner will walk into the DC Armory on Friday night without his WBA Super Lightweight title.  Broner lost the title on the scales during today's weigh-in at the Bald Eagle Recreation Center in Southwest DC.

Broner weighed in at 140.4 pounds (butt naked) while challenger Ashley Theophane weighed in at the super lightweight limit of 140 pounds.  Broner had two hours after the weigh-in to lose the four ounces he needed to.  Reportedly, he didn't even try to lose the weight.

Broner has been stripped of the title but the bout is still on.  If Theophane wins on Friday, he becomes the champion.  If Broner wins, the title will become vacant.  ESPN.com is reporting that Broner will have to pay Theophane a portion of his purse.  No word on the details of that agreement.

Broner, a four-time champion in four weight divisions, faces this situation for the second time in his career.  In July of 2012, Broner was slated to defend a junior lightweight title against Vicente Escobedo but weighed in three and a half pounds over the 130-pound limit.  The title was stripped from Broner but remained vacant because Broner knocked out Escobedo in the fifth round.

Here is the rest of the scale watch:

Robert Easter 133 vs. Algenis Mendez 134

Gervonta Davis 131 vs. Guillermo Avila 131

Anthony Peterson 138 vs. Samuel Neequaye 139

J'Leon Love 170 vs. Michael Gbenga 170

Demond Nicholson 164 vs. Joshua Okine 160

Kareem Martin 147 vs. Somner Martin 147

Patrick Harris 137 vs. Samuel Amoako (will weigh-in tomorrow)

Shnggyskhan Tazhibay 148 vs. Rairus Dudley 152

Gerald Tucker 129 vs. Anthony Napunyi 131

Once again, the first bout is at 5:30 PM ET.  We will have podcast reports on the non-televised undercard as well as some interviews and a post-fight wrap-up show on the Boxing Along The Beltway Google App For Android as well as on the Boxing Along The Beltway pages on Spreaker.com, Iheartradio.com and on YouTube.

Broner, Theophane Hold Final Press Conference!

(Photos by Charles M. James, Three Cee Media.net)

Adrien Broner and Ashley Theophane made their final comments at the final press conference for their Friday, April 1 bout at the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

WBA Super lightweight champ Broner came to the Hamilton Live location in Northwest DC more than an hour late...and then had very little to say to the media assembled during the conference.

"I didn't even want to come here," Broner said.  "The fight is already sold."  Reportedly, there are about 200 tickets remaining for the card.  Broner then reiterated his promise that he would knock out the British challenger between four and eight rounds.

Theophane said he is looking for a war on Friday night.

"We are two days away and we are going to war," Theophane said.  "I hope he will try to live up to his promise -- to stalk me and try to knock me out."

As Theophane walked away from the podium, he ended his comments, "...and the new."

The weigh-in will be Thursday at 1 PM at the Bald Eagle Recreation Center in Southwest DC. The weigh-in is no longer open to the public.

'Tank' Davis Honored By City Of Baltimore!

Earlier this month during a media workout session in his hometown of Baltimore, MD, undefeated super featherweight Gervonta "Tank" Davis was given special recognition by Baltimore city for his leadership and community work.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (shown with Davis) was on hand at the Upton Boxing Center to present a certificate of recognition to Davis.  Mayor Rawlings-Blake had this to say about Davis.

“It is great to see Gervonta Davis accomplish so much and I know that this is just the beginning. He is a role model to all the young men and women who come to Upton Boxing, and the youth of Baltimore look up to him. He carries himself with respect, and he has pride for his hometown. To be a great boxer, you must be disciplined, you must train hard, and you must be dedicated. Although Tank is only 21 years old, his achievements illustrate his commitment to these principles. I am so very proud of him. I am excited for his next fight on April 1.”

That Friday, April 1 bout will be at the DC Armory in Washington, DC when Davis (14-0, 13 KO's) will take on Guillermo Avila of Tijuana, MX in a 10-round bout that will be shown live on Spike TV beginning at 9 PM ET.

Davis spoke to BATB about his April 1 contest and the special recognition from his hometown.

Prichard Colon Has Another Surgery Five Months After Bout In Virginia!

Prichard Colon, the Puerto Rican welterweight who has been in a comatose state since suffering injuries in a bout in Virginia, recently underwent another surgery with yet another one forthcoming.

Colon suffered a traumatic brain injury during a nationally-televised bout he lost against Terrell Williams of Los Angeles, CA at the EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, VA on October 17.  According to ESPN.com, Colon underwent surgery last week and is scheduled to have another one this week.  No word was given as to the specifics of the surgeries, one of many Colon has had since the injury.

"In the middle of [last] week, Pri underwent surgery," the family said in a statement. "[He will] go back to surgery next week. We ask that you take one minute to ask the creator for the health of our champion. Let us continue to pray to God for a miracle."

Colon (16-1, 13 KO's) lost by ninth-round disqualification to Williams during a foul-plagued contest.  Colon collapsed in his dressing room and was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure inside his skull.

Colon was moved to Shepherd Center, a hospital in Atlanta, GA that specializes in treatment for those with brain and spinal cord injuries.  Colon had spinal surgery in February so a catheter could be implanted in order to administer a drug to help loosen his muscles.

During the bout, Colon took illegal punches behind the head, including one that knocked Colon down in the ninth round. Referee Joe Cooper did not penalize Williams for the rabbit punch.  Cooper did penalize Williams in the seventh round for rabbit punching but allowed a lot of illegal punches during the contest.

Colon was disqualified when his corner took his gloves off after the ninth round, thinking it was the 10th and final round. The corner could not get Colon's gloves back on during the one-minute rest period between rounds.  Colon walked to the dressing room under his own power but soon after became dizzy, vomited and passed out, at which point he was rushed to the hospital.

The Virginia Department of Professional & Occupational Regulations recently announced that they had concluded their investigation of the bout and found "no regulatory violations."

The report said in part, "no regulatory violations appear to warrant disciplinary action against any Virginia licensees, including Williams. Cooper, the contract referee, generally maintained control of the contest -- despite noted disagreement over some foul calls and consistency of point deductions -- consulted with the ringside physician; and complied with regulatory requirements to attend to Colon's health. ... No one action (or failure to act) can be identified that is so apparent or egregious to justify holding accountable any one person."

The report concluded, "Although there is no evidence of foreseeable wrongdoing on the part of any particular individual, looking back at the 'what ifs' is indeed heartbreaking. DPOR remains committed to fighter safety, doing what we can to protect fighters despite the inherent risks of combative sports like boxing, and praying for Prichard Colon."

The DPOR also said in a statement, "Our hearts go out to Prichard Colon and his family, friends, and fans. All of us at DPOR, along with the boxing community, continue to hold out hope for his recovery. We fully appreciate that no report can ever truly make sense of the tragedy that occurred in Fairfax, Virginia, on Oct. 17, 2015."

Broner Faces Arrest Warrant For Assault; April 1 DC Armory Bout Still On!

An arrest warrant has been issued for WBA Super Lightweight champion Adrien "The Problem" Broner coming from charges of felonious assault and aggravated robbery during a January incident in a Cincinnati, OH bowling alley.

According to the TMZ website who first reported this, Broner allegedly beat up a man over money he owed from a bowling match on January 21.  The incident took place at 3:30 a.m. that night after Broner and another man had been making high stakes bets with each other at the lanes.  The man, identified as Christopher Carson, filed a lawsuit against Broner on Feb. 5, alleging that he won $14,000 off Broner in bowling side-bets, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper, which obtained a copy of the lawsuit. When Broner asked if he could wager another $6,000 on a final game, Carson refused, angering Broner, the lawsuit said.

Broner and a set of eight men later met Carson around 3 a.m. outside the bowling alley, the lawsuit says. Broner, who was armed, split his chin with a punch and knocked him unconscious, the lawsuit alleges. Carson later woke up with his chin bleeding and his winnings gone, the lawsuit says, according to the Enquirer.

RingTV.com is reporting a source in the Cincinnati Police Department as saying the police in Washington, D.C., where Broner is training, are aware of the warrant for his arrest.  If that is the case, the question is how long have they been aware of this warrant.  Broner has been a public figure in the DC area since the incident as he attended the February 27th pro boxing card at the Washington Convention Center as well as two sessions of the Washington Golden Gloves at the Sugar Ray Leonard Community Center in Palmer Park, MD.

Ravone Littlejohn, the president of Broner's About Billions Promotions, one of the three promoters of Broner's title defense against Ashley Theophane on Friday, April 1 at the DC Armory, told RingTV.com that the bout is definitely still on. BATB has learned that representatives from Spike TV, who is showing the bout, are already in town going over final logistics at the Armory.

April 1 DC Armory Card Finalized!

The About Billions Promotions/s Promotions/Headbangers Promotions card on Friday, April 1 at the DC Armory has added more bouts to the card.

DC lightweight Anthony Peterson will battle Samuel "Untouchable" Neequaye of DC by way of Accra, Ghana in a 10-round contest.  Peterson (36-1, 24 KO's) is coming off an easy first-round stoppage of Mike Oliver on October 17 in Fairfax, VA.  Peterson has won six straight since suffering his only loss against Brandon Rios in September of 2010.  Personal injuries and cancellations of bouts have kept Peterson from a more active career. Neequaye (22-1, 15 KO's) bounced back from his only loss by winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Eugenio Lopez in March of 2015 in Mexico.  Neequaye's only loss came in the ESPN Boxcino lightweight tournament to Fernando Carcamo by second-round knockout in February of 2014 in Laughlin,NV.

Middleweight Demond "D Best At It" Nicholson will be in an eight-round bout against Joshua Okine, who is also from Accra, Ghana but competes out of Silver Spring, MD.  Nicholson (16-1, 16 KO's) scored a first-round TKO over Jose Valderrama on February 27 at the Washington Convention Center.  Okine (28-5-1, 17 KO's) had a nine-bout winning streak snapped when he was knocked out by Marco Antonio Periban in the third round on October 17 in Veracruz, Mexico.

Undefeated Hyattsville, MD super lightweight Patrick Harris will battle the very busy Samuel "Bruno" Amoako, another Ghanaian transplant who now fights out of Silver Spring, MD.  Harris last fought on the February 27th Convention Center card and scored a first-round TKO over Christopher Russell.  Amoako (21-9, 15 KO's) just fought on March 18th and lost a six-round unanimous decision to Mike Reed in Philadelphia, PA.  The bout with Harris will be the fifth bout for Amoako this year.

Rockville, MD super welterweight Shyngyskhan Tazhibay makes his first appearance of 2016 when he faces Riarus Dudley of Georgia in a four-rounder.  Tazhibay (2-0, two KO's) scored two TKO's in his rookie campaign.  Dudley (2-0-1, two KO's) scored a second-round TKO over the debuting Dakari Ayise on February 20th in Macon, GA.

This card will begin at 5:30 PM ET with the doors opening at 5 PM.  The PBC on Spike telecast  --featuring Adrian Broner- Ashley Theophane and Gervonta Davis -- will get underway at 9 PM ET.

Special Comment: May Beltway Backyard Bouts Scrapped!

We recently posted what is a great schedule for the Beltway throughout April and May.

The May schedule could have been event better if two quality Beltway Backyard Bouts had not been scrapped on the weekend on May 13 and 14.  One bout has already been talked about and the other we had been holding because an announcement was forthcoming.  We start with that one first.

On Friday, May 13, undefeated DC welterweight Dusty Hernandez Harrison will headline a Throne Boxing/Roc Nation card at the DC Armory that will be televised on BET. We can tell you now that Harrison's original opponent was slated to be Stevensville, MD's Tony "Mo Better" Jeter in a 10-round bout that was going to be fought at a catchweight of 154 pounds -- meaning Harrison was going to move up in weight and Jeter, a natural middleweight, was coming down.

Let me interject some personal thoughts at this point.  Jeter has a signed contract for this bout.  I am not showing you the contract because there are addresses listed that I don't want shown to the public. However, I have seen the contract and I know the contract exists.  Both boxers reportedly signed the contract. However, the Harrison camp reportedly nixed the bout.

If that is true, then we have to wonder what the plan for Dusty Harrison is at this point.  Harrison is 29-0, 16 KO's -- he has more bouts and more knockouts than Jeter (20-5-1, 14 KO's) He is also 19 years younger than Jeter.  However, it can be said that Jeter, at age 40, has done more, or at least attempted more, than the 21-year old Harrison has.  Jeter has been ranked by three major governing bodies, has fought for interim world titles and has won a number of regional titles.

Harrison has won two regional titles but, unlike Jeter, has not parlayed them into bigger and better paydays. In fact, Harrison has regressed opponent-wise.  After winning the WBC Continental Americas Welterweight title -- a belt that has historically been a stepping stone to a world title opportunity -- in January of 2015, Harrison was supposed to face Colombian welterweight Henry Auraad in April in what would have been a quality contest on the Fox Sports 1 network. Auraad was 16-9 with 13 KO's at that point.  However, Auraad had visa issues and Harrison ended up fighting a late replacement in Chris Gray at the Foxwoods in Mashantucket, CT.  Harrison won by eight-round unanimous decision against an under-.500 boxer.

After the Gray bout, Harrison fought three times against boxers who were veterans but were gatekeepers at best.  To his credit, Harrison scored knockouts in all three contests.  The question still remains, however -- when is Harrison going to stop fighting gatekeepers?

When you look at some of the pro boxers who were in the amateurs around the same time as Harrison and how their pro careers have progressed -- that question starts to scream out. Boxers like Dominic Wade and Jarrett Hurd have fewer bouts than Harrison, however, they have won huge bouts that have put them in position for bigger paydays.  It is beyond time for Harrison to be put in the same position.

If this is happening because the Harrison camp is afraid of losing, they are in the wrong business and they should know that by now.  A bout against Jeter would have been great for this area and would have given everyone an idea on where Harrison is at this point.  We can only hope Harrison has a quality opponent for May 13.

Now, lets move to Saturday, May 14 where another Beltway Backyard Brawl was scheduled for the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium as the main event for the Shawstyle Promotions/Shabazz Brothers card.  James Stevenson was scheduled to face Cecil McCalla in a 10-round bout for the Maryland State Welterweight title.  This would have been a great bout for two Baltimore boxers who needed this contest for confidence if nothing else.

What made this bout so intriguing was that both boxers received opportunities recently on national television and both boxers came up short.  It would have been close to a "win or go home" situation.  It would have been a good style matchup as well with the power of Stevenson against the boxing skills of McCalla.  Both men, at one time or another, had reservations about this bout and I can understand why.  It is a risky bout even at this stage.  However, like Harrison and Jeter would have been for DC, Stevenson-McCalla would have been a huge bout for the Baltimore area.  Let's hope this is not a missed opportunity.

As I have said in the past, I normally don't approve of backyard bouts between locals unless there is something on the line.  In both these proposed bouts, there would have been a lot on the line -- reputations and titles in particular.  And both those contests would have added a whole lot to what will be an outstanding spring.  Fortunately, both cards will go on and that will be great for the fans.

Superb Spring Of Beltway Boxing Coming Soon!

Every other year or so, BATB celebrates two of the busier months on the schedule in either the "Awesome April of Beltway Boxing" or the "Magnificent May Along The Beltway."  Normally, the month would consist of a large number of local cards and maybe one or two boxers on out-of-town cards that may be on national television.

In all my years of covering Beltway Boxing, I cannot remember a time where we have had a stretch of action that will look like the next month-and-a-half.  Not so much the number of local cards, it's the importance of those cards.  It's not so much the number of boxers in out-of-town bouts, it's the importance of those bouts.

Let's break down the stats of what is about to happen between April 1 and May 14:

Beltway Boxers will be on national television at least five times during that stretch -- that number could grow as more information comes in.

Two Beltway Boxers will be involved in world title bouts.
There will be three nationally-televised cards -- on three different networks -- that will come from one location -- The DC Armory -- during that time period.

There will be five local cards in all during that stretch.
When you add two of the most important amateur cards of the year -- The Washington Golden Gloves finals and Regional Golden Gloves finals -- this is an incredible schedule to say the very least.

So here it is -- as much as I can give you with the possibility of bouts changing without prior notice -- The "Superb Spring of Beltway Boxing."

Friday, April 1 -- Adrian Broner defends WBA Super Lightweight title against Ashley Theophane (Spike TV) at the DC Armory, Washington, DC.  Gervonta Davis slated to be on that card in a televised bout and Kareem Martin also on that card.

Saturday, April 2 -- Washington Golden Gloves Finals at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.

Saturday, April 9 -- Jeter Promotions card at ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.  Gerome Quigley slated to headline card.  Other Beltway Boxers include Drayvontay Speed-Rawls, Cobia Breedy, Francisco Bustos, Marq Johns, Edgar Torres.  Also, the Jeter Promotions debut of York, PA boxer Stevie Weimer.

Saturday, April 9 -- Potomac Valley Association of USA Boxing (PVA) hosts first day of local Junior Olympic Tournament at Rosecroft Raceway.

Saturday, April 16 -- Gary Russell, Jr. defends WBC Featherweight championship against Patrick Hyland at the Foxwoods in Mashantucket, CT (Showtime)

Saturday, April 16 -- Final day of local Junior Olympic Tournament at Rosecroft Raceway.

Tuesday, April 19 -- Immanuwel Aleem vs. Jonathan Cepeda in eight-round contest at the Sands Bethlehem Events Center, Bethlehem, PA (Fox Sports 1)

Saturday, April 23 -- Dominic Wade challenges Gennady Golovkin for multiple world middleweight titles at the Forum in Inglewood, CA (HBO)

Saturday, April 23 -- Lenwood Dozier on card at Police Athletic League, Elizabeth City, NC.

Friday, April 29 -- Luther Smith takes on Mark Rideout on card at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ.  The bout is the first six-rounder for Smith.  Also, Alando Pugh battles Brendan Barrett in a four-rounder and Antonio Magruder will be in a four-round bout.

Saturday, April 30 -- World super middleweight championship doubleheader at the DC Armory -- Badou Jack defends WBC title against former champion Lucian Bute and James DeGale defends IBF title against Rogelio Medina. (Showtime)

Saturday, April 30 -- Thomas Williams, Jr. takes on Edwin Rodriguez in 10-round contest at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, CA. (Fox/Fox Deportes)

Saturday, April 30 -- Regional Golden Gloves Finals at Rosecroft Raceway, Fort Washington, MD.

Friday, May 13 -- Pro Boxing card at DC Armory (BET). Dusty Hernandez Harrison will headline.

Saturday, May 14 -- Shawstyle Promotions/Shabazz Promotions card at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, Timonium, MD.  Travis Reeves vs. Garrett Wilson, Tyrieshia Douglas vs. Anahi Torres.

Friday-Sunday, May 13-15 -- Regional Junior Olympic Tournament at the Main Street Gym in Salisbury, MD.

We will have updates on everything on this schedule when those details come in.

Stevenson To Battle McCalla For Maryland State Welterweight Title; Reeves Faces Veteran Wilson May 14 In Timonium!

A very interesting all-Baltimore bout is shaping up for the main event of the Shawstyle Promotions/Shabazz Brothers card on Saturday, May 14 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, MD.

James "Keep 'Em Sleepin'" Stevenson will battle Cecil McCalla in a 10-round contest for the Maryland State Welterweight title.  Both men have had difficulties as they have stepped up in competition.  The two losses for Stevenson (22-2, 15 KO's) have both come on national television against quality foes Roberto Garcia and Sammy Vasquez.  The three losses for McCalla (20-3, seven KO's) have come in his last three bouts against a former world champion and two quality contenders.

In what should be a solid cruiserweight battle, Baltimore's Travis "Seveer" Reeves steps up in competition to face veteran Garrett "The Ultimate Warrior" Wilson of Philadelphia, PA in an eight-round contest.  Reeves (11-2-2, five KO's) has scored knockouts in his last two contests including a first-round knockout of Anthony Caputo Smith on December 12 at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore.  Reeves also had the 2015 Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year when he devastated Samer Barakat on July 9 at the Tall Cedars Hall in Parkville, MD.

Wilson (16-10-1, nine KO's) is a former USBA and NABF Cruiserweight champion who recently had a three-bout winning streak snapped in his last outing.  Wilson lost a 10-round unanimous decision to undefeated Keith Tapia on December 8 in Trenton, NJ.  Wilson made his pro debut in the Beltway area when he scored a second-round TKO over equally debuting Robert McConnell in May of 2008 in District Heights, MD.

There will also be a women's bout on this card as DC flyweight Tyrieshia "Lady Tyga" Douglas will take on Anahi "Pantera" Torres of Tlalnepantla, Mexico in an eight-round contest.  Douglas (10-1, four KO's) bounced back from suffering her first pro loss by winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Nydia Feliciano on November 12 in Cockeysville, MD.  Torres (13-13-1, two KO's) will be the most experienced foe Douglas has faced in her career.  Torres, a former WBC Youth Minimumweight champion, is coming off a six-round unanimous decision loss to Jessica Nery Plata on February 3 in Queretaro, Mexico.

A number of locals are slated to be on this card.  We already know that undefeated Baltimore super middleweight Devin Butcher (5-0, three KO's) will take on Philadelphia veteran Greg Hackett (2-15-1) in a four-round contest.  Also scheduled to be on the card are Glenn Dezurn, Patrick Harris, Seth Billups, Eric Hernandez, Tyrell Samuel and Stephon Morris.

More on this card as information comes in.

DeGale (22-1, 14 KO's) will be in the second part of this twinbill as he will defend his title against Rogelio "Porky" Medina (36-6, 30 KO's).  DeGale, a resident of St Albans, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, will be making the second defense of the title he won in May of 2015.  Medina, who competes out of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, is in the midst of a four-bout winning streak which includes a third-round knockout win over previously undefeated J'Leon Love in August of 2014.

BATB has been told that there will be a significant Beltway presence on this Mayweather Promotions card -- the second Mayweather card at the DC Armory in April.  The Friday, April 1 card featuring Adrian Broner defending his WBA Super Lightweight title against Ashley Theophane is being co-promoted by Mayweather Promotions along with Headbangers Promotions and About Billions Promotions.

On March 11th at the Serbian American Cultural Center in Weirton, WVA, cruiserweight "Slick" Nick Kisner of Baltimore, MD scored a fourth-round TKO over James Jones of Nashville, TN.  This was Kisner's first bout since his 10-round unanimous decision loss to Lateef Kayode in May of 2015 in Memphis, TN.  Kisner is now 15-2-1, six KO's.  Jones falls to 1-8.

Tonight at the Sheraton Hotel in Roanoke, VA, undefeated Frederick, MD super middleweight Devar "Jengawar" Ferhadi continued his winning ways with a first-round knockout over Travis Davidson of Richmond, VA.  According to reports, Ferhadi dropped Davidson twice with solid body shots before forcing the referee to stop the contest at 2:12 of the first.  Ferhadi is now 6-0, five KO's while Davidson drops to 2-10, two KO's.

Russell, Jr. To Defend WBC Featherweight Title April 16 In Connecticut!

WBC Featherweight champion "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. will make the first defense of his title on Saturday, April 16 when he takes on Patrick "The Punisher" Hyland of Dublin, Ireland at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, CT.  The bout will be the main event on a Showtime Championship Boxing telecast.

Russell (26-1, 15 KO's) was scheduled to defend his title late in 2015, however he suffered a cut in training.  The man Russell was scheduled to defend his title against, Oscar Escandon, won the interim WBC title with a seventh-round TKO over Robinson Castellanos on March 5 at the DC Armory.  Plans were made for Russell to defend the title against Hyland on the undercard of Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter this weekend but that card was cancelled.

Hyland (31-1, 15 KO's) last fought on October 10 and scored an eight-round TKO over David Martinez in Lowell, MA.

BATB also hears that Russell's brother, Antonio, will participate on this card.  Antonio Russell, the 2015 Beltway Boxing Rookie of the Year (5-0, four KO's), is coming off a third-round TKO over Eduardo Melendez on October 30 in Orlando, FL.

Beltway Boxing Commissions Deal With Controversies!

Two of the Beltway's boxing commissions are dealing with minor controversies based on bouts that took place on Saturday, March 5.

BATB has learned that the Virginia Department of Licensing and Regulations has overturned a decision during a bout between Leesburg, VA lightweight Eric "El Torito" Hernandez and Darrell Jones of Jacksonville, FL that took place at the Masonic Temple in Norfolk, VA.  Hernandez suffered an eye injury that caused the bout to be stopped early in the fifth round.  The bout went to the scorecards and Hernandez was initially awarded the win by technical decision.  However, the Jones camp challenged that decision saying the bout should have been stopped and Jones awarded a TKO because Hernandez could not continue.  The Virginia Commission changed the decision in favor of Jones.

However, the Virginia Commission reversed that decision after an appeal by the Hernandez camp and awarded the win back to Hernandez by fifth-round technical decision. Hernandez remains undefeated at 7-0, four KO's while Jones is now 3-15-1, one KO.

Meanwhile, the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission is investigating the scores of one of the judges during the main event of the Golden Boy Promotions card at the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

According to RingTV.com's Mitch Abramson, the outcome of the bout between heavyweights Tony Thompson and Luis Ortiz is not in question as Ortiz dominated Thompson en route to a sixth-round TKO.  The questions surround the scorecard of longtime DC judge Lloyd Scaife, who only had Ortiz winning by one point after the first five rounds.

Judges Tammye Jenkins and Paul Wallace had Ortiz pitching a shutout after five rounds, 50-43.  However, Scaife's scorecard had Ortiz winning 48-47.  Scaife scored the first round 10-9 for Ortiz despite Ortiz  knocking down on Thompson in that round. Both Jenkins and Wallace scored the first 10-8 for Ortiz.

Scaife, who has been judging bouts in DC since the mid-1990's, gave the third round to Thompson 10-9 even though Ortiz knocked down Thompson in that round.  Again, Jenkins and Wallace saw the third round in favor of Ortiz, 10-8. Scaife also saw the fifth round for Thompson.

Here is a look at the official scorecard:

The DC Commission, led by new chair Adam Weers, says they will make a ruling on Scaife later this week.

Results Of Beltway Competition in Norfolk, VA!

A number of Beltway Boxers competed on a Ponytail Promotions/Sho Nuff Promotions card at the Masonic Temple in Norfolk, VA on March 5.

Leesburg, VA lightweight Eric "El Torito" Hernandez lost by fourth-round TKO to Darrell Jones of Jacksonville, FL. The loss came under strange circumstances.  Hernandez suffered a cut near the right ear during the contest and as the bout entered the fifth round, the referee stopped the bout to ask the ringside doctor to look at Hernandez's face.  The doctor ruled that the bout should be stopped.  The bout went to the scorecards and Hernandez was declared the winner.

However, the Jones camp came prepared with a copy of the Virginia State boxing bylaws which say that in this situation (since there was no ruling on whether the hematoma was caused by a butt or a punch) the bout should not have gone to the cards and should have instead been ruled a stoppage.  The Virginia Commission reversed the decision and awarded a TKO to Jones.  Reportedly, the Hernandez camp will appeal.

Right now, Hernandez has the first loss on his record and he is now 6-1, four KO's.  Jones is now 4-14-1, two KO's.

Ashburn, VA super lightweight Seth "Killer B" Billups remained undefeated with a four-round unanimous decision over Corey McCants of Cincinnati, OH.  Billups won by shutout (40-36) across the board.  Billups is now 8-0, six KO's while McCants is 2-13-2, one KO.

Other results: Matthew Abregu of DC KO 1 over Arthur McCrow of Greensboro, NC.  Abregu is now 2-0, two KO's while McCrow is 0-2.

Alexandru "Spartan" Marin of Silver Spring, MD stopped Miguel "El Samurai" Del Valle of Manati, Puerto Rico in the third round.  Marin remains undefeated at 11-0, eight KO's while Del Valle is 10-25, two KO's.

In a rematch, Dodie Boy Penalosa, Jr. of Rockville, MD scored a third-round TKO over DeWayne Wisdom of Indianapolis, IN.  Penalosa won a six-round decision over Wisdom on November 21 at the Masonic Temple.  Penalosa is now 19-0, 15 KO's while Wisdom is 6-28-1, three KO's.

Thompson, Douglas Suffer Knockout Losses!

Tough night for Beltway Boxers on national television tonight.  At the DC Armory, Tony "The Tiger" Thompson was stopped in the sixth round by undefeated Luis "The Real King Kong" Ortiz.

Meanwhile at the Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, PA on Showtime, Antoine "Action" Douglas was stopped in the 10th round by Avtandil Khurtsidze.  Douglas suffered a cut over his right eye and was dropped in the third by a left hand.  Douglas mounted a comeback in the fifth round but by the seventh, Khurtsidze was able to drop Douglas in the seventh with a left hand.  Finally, Khurtsidze landed a brutal right hand early in the tenth that stopped the bout at 33 seconds.

Alan "Goldy" Goldstein, Legendary Baltimore Boxing Writer, Passes At 82!

He was truly a legendary writer in the boxing business and he put boxing in Baltimore on the map.  He was also a mentor to many, including myself.

Alan "Goldy" Goldstein, a retired sports reporter and columnist for the Baltimore Sun, passed away on February 29 of liver failure.  He was 82.

Mr. Goldstein covered basketball and professional boxing primarily throughout his four-decade career.  His boxing era included covering legendary boxers like Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard.  He wrote two biographies of fighters: "A Fistful of Sugar: The Sugar Ray Leonard Story" in 1981 and "Muhammad Ali: The Story of a Boxing Legend" published in 2007.  He also co-authored the book "12 Rounds With Oscar De La Hoya: An Illustrated Tribute to Boxing's Brightest Star" in 1998.

Mr. Goldstein was inducted into the Maryland Boxing Hall of Fame in 1976 and received the Nat Fleischer Award for Excellence in Boxing Journalism in 1997.

Born in New York City, Mr. Goldstein earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1954.  He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 where he was a sports editor for Stars And Stripes.

After his discharge in 1956, Mr. Goldstein began his career as a sports reporter in Meriden, CT.  Four years later, he would join the Sun's staff.  He would cover just about any sport -- he covered the Orioles, the Colts and the Baltimore Blast.  But his true loves were basketball and boxing.

Mr. Goldstein is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rebecca, two sons, Joel and Jay and a granddaughter.  Services will be private.  There will be a celebration of his life on April 9 at his home in Brooklandville.

When I first wanted to expand my base of operations to include Baltimore back in the early 90's, Alan Goldstein was there.  He could not have been more welcoming to me.  I learned so much talking to him.  He was such a first-class individual and he was a huge point of reference for me when I started learning about the Baltimore part of the Beltway Boxing landscape.

In 2005, the year this blog started, I came across a Ring Magazine from 1996. This issue had a special section called "A Tale of 10 Cities" in which different boxing writers listed the top 10 boxers from US cities where boxing was paramount.

Baltimore was on that list and Mr. Goldstein's list looked like this:

1. Joe Gans
2. Harry Jeffra
3. Kid Williams
4. George (KO) Chaney
5. Joe Dundee
6. Vince Dundee
7. Vincent Pettway
8. Red Burman
9. Jimmy McAllister
10 Jack Portney

Such was the importance of Alan Goldstein's boxing writing. Thank you, Mr. Goldstein, for all you have done.  BATB sends its deepest condolences to the family.

Ortiz-Thompson NOT For Interim WBA Heavyweight Title, Says WBA!

Ah, the craziness of boxing.  The World Boxing Association (WBA) has put out a press release saying that Saturday's heavyweight bout between Luis Ortiz and Tony "The Tiger" Thompson at the DC Armory will not be for Ortiz's interim Heavyweight title.

According to the WBA, Golden Boy Promotions asked for and received permission from the WBA to let Ortiz face Thompson on the condition that the interim title would not be on the line.

Here is what the WBA said in the press release:

Thompson, who is a tough competitor, is 44 years old and has lost three of his last five fights. The second is that he not ranked among the WBA’s top 15 heavyweights. And the third reason is that Golden Boy had been ordered to negotiate a fight between Luis Ortiz and Alexander Ustinov for the interim WBA World heavyweight title.

Tony Thompson was not included in the mix.

WBA president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza announced in early 2016 that a tournament had been established with the sole purpose of establishing a single champion in the heavyweight division. This was long overdue and a welcome change from the somewhat confusing business-as-usual.

The resolution from the WBA Championships Committee regarding the heavyweight tournament was as clear as day. It stated that the winner of the fight between Ortiz and Ustinov will face the winner of the rematch between WBA Super World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and former champion Wladimir Klitschko, who is currently ranked #3 by the WBA.

If Thompson defies the odds and defeats Ortiz, he will not take his place in the tournament and face Ustinov.

The WBA calls this bout a "stay-busy" bout for Ortiz and it should be treated as such.
