Russell, Fox Capture Unanimous Decisions In Bethlehem, PA!
Two Beltway Boxers won six-round unanimous decisions tonight at the Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, PA.
In a televised contest (FS1), Capitol Heights, MD super bantamweight Antonio "Another" Russell defeated Rudolph "Cutting Edge" Hedge of Kingston, Jamaica. Russell went on the offensive early against his very game opponent, damaging Hedge's nose in the first round with his quick hands. Hedge bravely tried to stay with Russell but the combinations from the younger brother of the WBC Featherweight champ, Gary Russell, Jr. proved to be too much. Russell won by scores of 60-54 and 59-55 (twice) to remain undefeated at 7-0, five KO's. Hedge's record falls to 10-4-3, four KO's.
On the undercard, super lightweight Mykal "The Professor" Fox of Forestville, MD scored a shutout victory over Jose Valderrama of Manati, Puerto Rico. Fox won by scores of 60-54 across the board. Fox also remains undefeated at 10-0, two KO's while Valderrama drops to 5-14, three KO's.
Williams, Salinas Head To Connecticut For Fights At Foxwoods!
Veteran Baltimore, MD light heavyweight Willie "For Real" Williams will face undefeated Charles Foster of New Haven, CT in a six-round contest. Williams (14-11-2, four KO's) will be trying to break a three-bout losing streak that includes a first-round TKO loss to Luis Garcia on December 5 in Brooklyn, NY. The streak started with a second-round TKO loss to future hall of famer Roy Jones, Jr. in Concord, NC in March of 2015.
Foster (10-0, five KO's) last fought on June 11 and won by first-round disqualification over Ralph Johnson in Quincy, MA. Foster also holds a victory over Beltway Boxer Larry Pryor. Foster won a six-round unanimous decision over Pryor at the Foxwoods in January of 2015.
Participating in the co-feature on this card is Manassas, VA-born super featherweight and two-time women's world champion "The Bolivian Queen" Jennifer Salinas who will battle Gina Chamie of Budapest, Hungary in an eight-round encounter. Salinas, who now trains and fights out of Providence, RI (18-3, four KO's), has not fought since her 10-round unanimous decision win over Melissa St. Vil on November 12 in Cockeysville, MD. The win earned Salinas the Universal Boxing Federation Super Featherweight title and the bout was chosen as the 2015 Beltway Boxing Bout of the Year.
Chamie (14-6, six KO's) is a former WBC Youth lightweight titleholder but has struggled when competing against more experienced opponents for bigger titles. Chamie last fought on May 15 and won a six-round decision over Veronica Hornyak in Budapest.

Jack Obermayer, Legendary Boxing Scribe, Passes at 72!
Jack Obermayer, a long-time and award-winning boxing scribe for more than 50 years, passed away from liver cancer on Saturday, June 25 at his home in Lindenwold, NJ. He was 72 years old.
From the first time he wrote about a boxing card (Muhammad Ali vs. Doug Jones on March 13, 1963), Mr. Obermayer would attended 3,514 cards in 49 states (only Alaska did not have the pleasure of his company) and visit more than 400 cities, including the Beltway on countless occasions.
"KO-JO" as Mr. Obermayer was known, wrote for a number of publications during his tenure, including Ring Magazine, Boxing Illustrated/Boxing Digest and USA Boxing News. His "KO-JO Says" column would chronicle his travels and his favorite diners along the way.
Mr. Obermayer, a native of Staten Island, NY who was a Vietnam War veteran, was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame this year. He also was the recipient of the Barney Nagler Award for Long and Meritorious Service by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 2010.
He is survived by a daughter, Ellen Kaplan, 44, and two granddaughters, Alexis Clawans, 18 and Sydney Clawans, 15. Obermayer had been living with Darlene Dontonville for the past 16 years.
The viewing will be held on Thursday at the Harmon Funeral Home at 571 Forest Avenue in Staten Island, New York from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. There will be a Friday funeral mass at 10:30 a.m., also in Staten Island with the location details to follow.
So, you may ask why Jack Obermayer, who is not from the Beltway, included here. Two reasons. One, Jack was a dear friend and in many ways, a mentor to me. And two: His writing and coverage of many bouts in the Beltway area helped us establish a media base in the boxing business well before Boxing Along The Beltway was even thought of.
I first met Jack in the mid-80's covering cards in DC. From the very start, Jack was incredible to me with great conversation, stories and giving away the latest copies of magazines and newsletters that included his stories. Jack, along with his right hand man, JR Jowett, were a duo that I always look forward to seeing at a show and they would come to the club shows as well as the big shows in the Beltway area and that helped establish my mindset about covering local cards going forward.
This picture was taken in November of 2014 at the Jonathan Ogden Foundation Boxing card at Martin's Valley Mansion in Cockeysville, MD. It was a reunion of myself and the four guys I spent covering boxing in the Beltway in the eighties and early 90's. From left to right: (Eric Bottjer, who actually was doing a print version of this blog during that time and is now one of the top matchmakers in boxing; Jack, JR Jowett, (seated) who is still going strong writing about amateur and pro boxing; John Scheinman, who was a legendary boxing writer and now an Eclipse-Award winning horse racing writer; and me. To Jack, we all had nicknames -- Eric was "The Creep," JR was "Jowett-Boy, John was "The Midge" or "Scheinie." I was "Dig."
Jack made his last trip to the Beltway on May 14 for a card in Timonium, MD. His last overall assignment was in Bristol, PA on June 4. The main event featured a Beltway Boxer as Lenwood Dozier lost a six-round unanimous decision to Derrick Webster.
Jack was a wonderful person who was so important to this business. No card was too big or too small for him to cover. I couldn't begin to count the number of world champions he saw in person. He will be missed terribly by me and the numerous boxing writers around the country who learned from him and was fortunate enough to laugh with him. Thank you for everything, Jack!

Marin Captures IBO International Bantamweight Title With Third-Round TKO!
In the second round of the bout, Marin landed a straight left followed by a picture-perfect right hook to the head that dropped Determan to his knees. Marin would land a left-right combination to Determan's face to drop him a second time.
Marin would finish the job late in the third round as he walked Determan down with pressure eventually leading to a straight left hand that dropped Determan for the third time in the bout. Determan's corner would not let their boxer continue and the bout was stopped at 2:37 of the round.
Marin remains undefeated at 12-0, eight KO's while Determan falls to 10-2, eight KO's.
The co-feature contest would be the only bout to go the distance as Gerald Tucker of Cincinnati, OH won a four-round unanimous decision over Reggie Barnett, Jr. of Chesapeake, VA in a featherweight contest. Tucker was able to win the contest with good offensive pressure in the second half of the contest. Tucker won by scores of 39-37 across the board to remain undefeated at 7-0-1, three KO's. Barnett loses for the first time and he is now 3-1, two KO's.
Woodbridge, VA cruiserweight Mario Flores won his bout by disqualification over Greg Hackett of Philadelphia, PA. Flores had difficulty at times landing shots on the elusive and crafty Hackett. However, Hackett stayed in survival mode throughout the contest and provided little to no offense in the contest. Referee Michelle Myers deducted a point from Hackett in the fourth round for holding and one in the fifth round for intentionally dropping his head down. Finally, near the midpoint of the sixth round, Myers disqualified Hackett for continued offenses. Flores is now 7-1-2, four KO's while Hackett is 2-16-1.
Middleweight Carlos Cruz of Ashburn, VA made his pro debut a successful one as he scored a first-round TKO over the equally-debuting Jerrel Artis of Brooklyn, NY. Baltimore, MD super middleweight Stephon "The Surgeon" Morris scored a first-round TKO over David "Rock Steady" Rohn of Villa Park, IL. Morris dropped Rohn twice in the contest before it was stopped at 2:59. Morris is now 3-0, three KO's while Rohn is 0-6-1.
Leesburg, VA super lightweight Eric "El Torito" Hernandez scored a TKO over Arthur "Two Heads" McCrow of Greensboro, NC when McCrow could not come out for the second round. Hernandez battered McCrow throughout the first round, knocking him down twice. After the bell rang to begin the second round, McCrow could not come off his stool. Hernandez raises his record to 8-0, five KO's while McCrow falls to 0-3.
Another Leesburg super lightweight product, Matthew Abregu, stopped Alan Beeman of Providence, RI at 2:51 of the second round. Abregu pressured Beeman with head and body shots for the duration of the bout. Abregu knocked down Beeman with a series of right uppercuts. Beeman, while taking the count, shook his head and chose not to continue. Abregu is now 3-0, three KO's and Beeman falls to 0-13.
Highly-touted Philadelphia, PA welterweight prospect Jaron "Boots" Ennis needed just 20 seconds to knockout Deshawn Debose of Milwaukee, WI. The 18-year-old Ennis landed a solid straight left hand that dropped Debose for the count. Ennis is now 3-0, three KO's. Debose drops to 0-5.
Newport News, VA heavyweight Jerry "Slug" Forrest scored a second-round knockout over Dan "The Disciple" Shull of Winchester, VA. Forrest dropped Shull with a right hand in the first round. Washington, DC welterweight Matthew Abregu returns to action in a four-round contest against Andrew Moreno of Mishawaka, IN. Abregu (2-0, two KO's) has had two first-round knockouts including his last bout against Arthur McCrow on March 5 in Norfolk, VA. Moreno (0-3) has not fought since August of 2013 when he lost by first-round TKO to Alberto Machado in Rochester, NY.
Baltimore, MD super middleweight Stephon "The Surgeon" Morris will take on David "Rock Steady" Rohn of Villa Park, IL in a four-round matchup. Morris (2-0, two KO's) last fought on May 14 and scored a third-round TKO over Brian Stevens in Timonium, MD. Rohn (0-5-1) will try to break a four-bout losing streak including a first-round knockout loss to Jeff McCalla on September 26 in Norfolk, VA.
Also on the card, Newport News, VA heavyweight Jerry "Slug" Forrest returns to action in a six-round bout against veteran Daniel Shull of Winchester, VA. Results From Springfield VA -- Quigley Scores KO Of The Year Candidate In Main Event!
In the main event, Gaithersburg, MD super welterweight Gerome "GQ" Quigley scored a vicious first-round knockout over veteran Reggie "Two-Gun" Nash of Grand Rapids, MI. Quigley rocked Nash with a right hand on top of Nash's head that dropped him to his knees. Nash was able to recover from that knockdown but a few seconds later, Quigley landed a powerful left-right combination that sent Nash crashing to the canvas. Referee Freddy Corritone did not have to finish the count before the bout was stopped at 2:33.
Quigley remains undefeated with a record of 15-0, 14 KO's while Nash falls to 10-39-1, two KO's. The fact that Quigley registered a Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year candidate is even more impressive considering that three weeks prior to the bout, Quigley was hit by a truck while doing roadwork in preparation for the bout. Quigley, fortunately, suffered only minor injuries.
The co-feature saw Jeter Promotions signee Steve Weimer of York, PA score a ruthless first-round stoppage of Damian Archer of Zebulon, NC. Weimer jumped on Archer early, pummeling him into a neutral corner. Referee Alisha Daniels saw enough and the bout was stopped at just 34 seconds. Weimer is now 11-0, three KO's while Archer is 0-2.
In the only bout on the card to go the distance, undefeated Clinton, MD lightweight Cobia "The Soldier" Breedy won a four-round unanimous decision over Stephon McIntyre of Atlanta, GA in a rematch of a bout that took place two months ago in the same location. In this rematch, Breedy was more aggressive early in the contest and took the fight to his opponent. McIntyre's offensive attempts decreased during the contest and Breedy would go on to win by a 40-36 shutout on all three scorecards. Breedy is now 7-0, four KO's while McIntyre is 2-21-2.
Rockville, MD middleweight Francisco Bustos scored a second-round TKO over Corey Macon of Durham, NC. Bustos ended a rather strange second round that saw both boxers and the referee trip and fall over each other throughout. Midway through the round, Bustos landed a solid left hand that sent Macon reeling. Referee Corritone saw the damage and moved in to check Macon's condition. As he moved forward, Corritone tripped over the charging Bustos and fell. As Corritone recovered, Bustos continued to punish Macon before Corritone stopped the contest at 2:11. Bustos remains undefeated at 5-0, three KO's while Macon falls to 0-2-1.
Palmer Park, MD super lightweight Drayvontay Speed Rawls won by first-round TKO in bizarre fashion when Speed Rawls and his opponent, David Perez of Pittsburgh, PA clashed heads. Muhammad Ali, 1942-2016!
So many words have been -- and will be -- said about the life and times of Muhammad Ali. I have decided that this will be a rememberance, not an obituary.
I can remember four times where Mr. Ali came to the Beltway area and touched my life and many, many others.
1. April 30, 1976 -- Mr. Ali defended his heavyweight title for the first time in the Beltway when he defeated Jimmy Young at the Capital Centre in Largo, MD. The bout wasn't one of his best outings but he did get a knockdown as he went on to a 15-round unanimous decision. Even though, this was nowhere near the prime Ali, to have him compete in my home area was a thrill.
2. May 16, 1977 -- Mr. Ali made his second defense of his world title at the Capital Centre against Alfredo Evangelista. One of the most special days of my life. I was 13 years old and my father picked me up from school and said "I have a surprise for you." As we were driving, I noticed we had past our house. Next thing I know, we are at the Capital Centre and I remember the fact that Ali was fighting tonight. Again, Mr. Ali was nowhere near his prime but to see him in person -- in my first live boxing card ever -- was a thrill that has stayed with me always.
3. October 11, 1995 -- Another special night for me personally, my very first Fight Night -- Fight For Children, the annual charity event that takes place at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC. There were legends galore that night -- Carmen Basilio, Joe Frazier, Kid Gavilan, Jake La Motta, Archie Moore, Floyd Patterson, Ingemar Johannsen, Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler. I had the pleasure of interviewing most of those legends.
However, I will never forget what ring announcer Michael Buffer said after announcing all of those legends to the packed ballroom that night -- "And there was another."
As Mr. Ali made his way to the ring, the crowd exploded with the familiar "Ali, Ali, Ali" chants. I get chills to this day just thinking about this. What a fantastic moment.
4. June 11, 2005 -- This was the night at the MCI (now Verizon Center) where Mike Tyson fought his final bout. However, Laila Ali was on the card and she stopped Erin Toughill in the third round. Mr. Ali was in attendance that night and was so proud of his daughter. The packed house once again, shook with the "Ali" chant after he was introduced to the crowd.
We should all feel very blessed that we got to share the same universe at the same time with this wonderful man. Although I have written this through many tears, I know full well that Muhammad Ali's life is TRULY one to be celebrated! Rest well, champ.
