Virginia/North Carolina Golden Gloves April 10-12 In Hampton Roads!

While the Washington Golden Gloves Finals take place on Saturday, April 4 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD, the Virginia/North Carolina Golden Gloves will get underway on Friday, April 10 and run through Sunday, April 12 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center located at 1610 Coliseum Drive in Hampton, VA.

Friday and Saturday's action begins at 6 PM and Sunday's card starts at 1 PM.  Tickets are $27 for General Admission and Front Row Ringside are $42.  For more information, call 757-589-9502.

The Novice and Open Division winners will meet their counterparts from the DC/Maryland region at the Regional Golden Gloves on Saturday, April 25 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.

Beltway Boxers On The Road In April!

Results From Springfield!

Here are the results from the Jeter Promotions/RBA Promotions card that took place Saturday in front of a packed house at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA:

The main event saw undefeated Montgomery Village, MD welterweight Gerome "Showstopper" Quigley score a fifth-round knockout over Richard "Tiger" Lee Hall of Rocky Mount, NC to win the Virginia State welterweight title.  Quigley was very precise with his jab and that set up his power shots including a vicious counter left hook that dropped Hall for the knockout at 2:30 of the fifth round.

Quigley is now 7-0, six KO's while Hall's record drops to 10-23-3, six KO's.

In the co-feature contest, WBC number 13-ranked middleweight Tony "Mo Better" Jeter of Stevensville, MD stopped Jeremy Marts of Ottumwa, IA at 1:03 of the second round.  Jeter dropped Jeremy Marts five times en route to the victory.  Jeter gets his 20th pro victory and is now 20-4-1, 14 KO's.  Marts's record dropped 12-19, nine KO's.

"The Pride of Alexandria (VA)" Brandon Quarles scored a second-round TKO over Andre Baker of Lumberton, NC.  Quarles battered Baker into submission before the bout was stopped at 2:50 of the round.  Quarles, the Virginia State Middleweight champion, is now 15-3, seven KO's.  Baker falls to 10-42-2, two KO's.

There was loads of heavyweight action on this card.  Ferndale, MD's "Slick" Nick Kisner won a six-round unanimous decision over "Rumblin' Man" Marlon Hayes of Newark, NJ.  Kisner scored a shutout on all three judge's cards, 60-54 in what was a somewhat awkward bout.  Kisner is now 14-1-1, five KO's.  Hayes is now 23-17, nine KO's.

Upper Marlboro, MD's Mike "Silverback" Balogun maintained his perfect record with a first-round knockout of Charlemagne Jones of Washington, DC.  Balogun overwhelmed Jones with solid left hands before the bout was stopped at 2:00 of the round.  Balogun is now 4-0, four KO's while Jones drops to 2-4-1, two KO's.

Debuting heavyweight Luther "Lights Out" Smith of Crofton, MD delighted a huge portion of the crowd with a first-round knockout of Jonathan Williams of Spartansburg, SC.  Smith stopped Williams at 1:37 of the round with a solid right hand.  Williams is now 0-2.

Newport News, VA heavyweight Jerry "Slug" Forrest stopped Riley Brooks of Baltimore, MD at 2:51 of the second round.  After weathering an initial flurry by Brooks in the first round, Forrest settled down and proceeded to hammer Brooks until the bout was stopped.  Forrest breaks a two-bout losing streak and raising his record to 8-2, seven KO's while Brooks dropped to 1-5-1.

Hometown welterweight Edgar "Tigre" Torres of Springfield, VA won a four-round majority decision over Norman "The Shadow" Allen of Laurel, MD.  Torres started the bout strong with hard shots to the body in the first two rounds.  To his credit, Allen came back with hard shots to Torres's head.  One judge saw a draw at 38-38 but was overruled by the two other judges who saw the bout 39-37 and 40-36.  Torres remains undefeated at 5-0-1, three KO's.  Allen falls to 6-13, three KO's.

Debuting super welterweight Zarifbek Nishanbaev of Landover, MD by way of Uzbekistan needed just 27 seconds to knock out equally debuting Mike Blocker of Spartansburg, SC.  Blocker came charging out of his corner and tried to engage Nishanbaev.  However, the former Washington Golden Gloves champion simply smiled and landed a brutal right hand that sent Blocker crumpling to the canvas.  The bout was stopped immediately.

Bridgetown, Barbados junior lightweight Cobia "Soldier" Breedy
scored a first-round knockout over Bobby Wooten of Wilson, NC. Breedy stopped Wooten with solid shots getting the win at 2:30 of the round.  Breedy is now 2-0, one KO while Wooten is 0-4.

In the opening bout, super middleweight Ian Green of New Jersey  scored a second-round TKO over Jess Noriega of Lynchburg, VA. Green used a very disciplined jab to move inside and eventually break down Noriega.  Green eventually stopped Noriega at 2:59 of the second.  Green remains perfect at 3-0, three KO's.  Noriega falls to 3-14-1, three KO's.

GARY RUSSELL, JR. CAPTURES WBC FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Congratulations to "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. , the brand new WBC Featherweight champion of the world!

Russell scored a fourth-round TKO over Jhonny Gonzalez of Mexico to capture the title in front of a nationally televised (Showtime) audience at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV.

The Capitol Heights, MD native dropped Gonzalez late in the third round with a blistering right hook and then finished the job with two knockdowns early in the fourth, forcing referee Tony Weeks to stop the contest at :37.

Russell is now 26-1, 15 KO's while Gonzalez is now 57-9, 48 KO's.

Also on the card, Bedford, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon lost an eight-round unanimous decision to J'Leon Love.  Sigmon drops to 24-7-1, 13 KO's while Love's record rises to 19-1, 10 KO's.

Norvus "Butch" Miller, Trainer Of Brother Purcell Miller, Passes!

Sad news to report.  Norvus "Butch" Miller, the brother and trainer of former Beltway title contender Purcell "Hard Rock" Miller, passed away this past Monday of a heart attack.   He was 49.

Butch Miller played college football at Delaware State University before turning his vision to his boxing brother,  Purcell, who was a rising prospect in the junior middleweight division.   Purcell was a Washington and Regional Golden Gloves champion and won his first 18 pro bouts with Butch in the corner.  Of course, who could forget those great ring walks complete with a brass band.

The funeral for Butch Miller will be held on Saturday,  April 4 at the United House of Prayer For All People,  located at 601 M Street in Northwest Washington.   The wake will be from 9 AM to 10:30 AM with the funeral to follow.

Butch Miller and I had a great friendship.   He was always smiling and we had not only boxing but MEAC football in common (since we went to rival schools).

My deepest condolences to Purcell and the rest of the Miller family.

Russell, Sigmon Hit Scales in Las Vegas!

Gary Russell and Scott Sigmon weighed in for their bouts Saturday night at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV.

Russell tipped the scales at 126 pounds for his 12-round challenge for the WBC Featherweight championship held by Jhonny Gonzalez who weighed in at 125 pounds.

Sigmon came in at 164 1/2 pounds while his opponent in his eight-round contest, J'Leon Love, tipped the scales at 168 pounds, three pounds over the contracted weight.  The bout will go on as scheduled.

The Showtime broadcast that will feature Gonzalez vs. Russell will begin at 10 PM ET.  Apparently, there will be no Showtime Extreme coverage of this card so Sigmon's contest will not be shown on television.

'Big Ticket' McRae Battles Undefeated Martin For NABO Heavyweight Title April 25 at MSG!

Laurel, MD heavyweight "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae will be looking to cash the biggest ticket in his pro career to date when he challenges undefeated Charles Martin of Carson, CA by way of St. Louis, MO for Martin's NABO Heavyweight title on Saturday, April 25 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The bout will be on the undercard of the Vladimir Klitschko-Bryant Jennings heavyweight championship contest.

McRae (15-3, eight KO's) is undefeated in his six contests (5-0, one no contest) and is coming off a six-round majority decision over Grover Young on November 1 in Washington, DC.

“This is a great opportunity for my career,” said McRae in a press release. “In my eyes, I’m also undefeated since both of my decision losses were controversial and the other fight was stopped unjustly, so my position really should be similar to his.”

However, Martin (20-0-1, 18 KO's) will be by far the most accomplished foe McRae has faced in his pro career.  Martin has held the NABO title since April 16, 2014 when he stopped Alexander Flores in the fourth round in Santa Monica, CA.  Martin will be making the third defense of his title after knockout wins over Raphael Zumbano Love and Kersten Manswell.  Martin also has stoppage wins over Tyyab Beale and Joey Dawejko. 

Martin is ranked number four by the WBO and number six by the IBF.  However, McRae seems unimpressed.

“He’s a decent fighter but I didn’t see anything spectacular. I know what I can do in there and that’s far more important than officially having a 0 at the end of my record. When two fighters get in the ring regardless of who is supposed to be the next great fighter or not, anything can happen and this is my time to show everybody what I’m truly made of!”

This bout could make the international telecast on April 25.

Quarles, Kisner, Breedy Added To Saturday's Card in Springfield!

A number of Beltway Boxers have been added to the Jeter Promotions/RBA Promotions card on Saturday, March 28 at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.

"The Pride of Alexandria (VA)" Brandon Quarles will be in a eight-round contest.  No official word yet on his opponent.  Quarles (14-3-1, six KO's) is coming off a fourth-round TKO over Dennis Sharpe on November 1 in Washington, DC.

Ferndale, MD heavyweight "Slick" Nick Kisner will battle "The Rumblin' Man" Marlon Hayes of Newark, NJ in a six-round contest.  Kisner (13-1-1, five KO's) last fought on July 18 and won a four-round unanimous decision over Pedro Martinez in Hanover, PA.

Hayes (23-16, 11 KO's) has fought a number of quality opponents during his 18-year career including Adonis Stevenson, Elvir Muriqi, Deontay Wilder, Jaidon Codrington and Vadim Tokarev.  Hayes competes in the Beltway region for the first time since April of 2002 when he won an eight-round unanimous decision over Dennis McKinney at the DC Tunnel (now EchoStage Lounge) in Washington, DC.

Super lightweight and Bridgeton, Barbados native Cobia Breedy also has been added to the show.  Breedy (1-0) made his pro debut on October 24 and won a four-round unanimous decision over Thomas Herrera in Fort Washington, MD.

Also scheduled to appear on this card will be Newport News, VA heavyweight Jerry "Slug" Forrest and Lynchburg, VA super middleweight Jess "Thunder" Noriega.

These names are added to the boxers already announced for the card -- Tony "Mo Better" Jeter, Edgar "Tiger" Torres, Mike Balogun and the debuting Zaribek Nishanbaev and Luther Smith.

The main event on the card remains the battle for the Virginia State Welterweight title -- Gerome Quigley vs. Richard "Tiger" Lee Hall.

Jackson-Benson, Hurd, Grayton, Aleem Appear on Card In Valley Forge, PA April 18!

A strong contingent of Beltway Boxers will travel to the Valley Forge Casino Resort in Valley Forge, PA for some very interesting contests on Saturday, April 18.

The main event will pit Landover, MD super middleweight "The Real Deal" Phil Jackson-Benson against a dangerous spoiler in Darnell "Deazol" Boone of Atlanta, GA in an eight-round contest.

Jackson-Benson (15-1, 14 KO's) is coming off a seventh-round TKO over Michael Gbenga on October 8 in Biloxi, MS.  Boone (20-21-4, nine KO's), however, may have the most deceptive record in the sport.

Boone has fought quality opponents like Sergey Kovalev, Brandon Gonzales and Dyah Davis and gave the first losses to future world title challenger Willie Monroe, Jr. and future light heavyweight world champion Adonis Stevenson.  That bout, where Boone stopped Stevenson in the second round, took place in April of 2010 at the Wicomico Center in Salisbury, MD.  Boone was also the first man to drop world champion Andre Ward.

Three other locals will participate in eight-round contests on this card.  Undefeated Accokeek, MD middleweight "Swift" Jarrett Hurd will compete in an eight-rounder for the first time in his pro career against veteran Eric "Murder" Mitchell of Vero Beach, FL by way of Philadelphia, PA.

Hurd (14-0, eight KO's) won a six-round majority decision over Emmanuel Sanchez on December 5 in Chester, PA.  the 45-year-old Mitchell (23-11-2, 11 KO's) is still a tough opponent, battling Harry Joe Yorgey to a six-round draw on July 25 in Wyomissing, PA.  Prior to that bout, Mitchell lost a six-round unanimous decision to Cecil McCalla in January of 2014 in West Orange, NJ.

Undefeated DC welterweight David "Day-Day" Grayton also enters eight-round territory for the first time as he takes on Grayson Blake of State College, PA.  Grayton (10-0, eight KO's) makes his second straight trip to Valley Forge and looks to remain successful there.  Grayton won a four-round unanimous decision over Dominique Foster on November 22.

Blake (6-3, two KO's) will also be in his first eight-rounder after winning a six-round unanimous decision over Anthony Prescott on January 31 in Philadelphia.  Beltway fans may remember Blake when he lost a six-round unanimous decision to Larry Recio at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD on July 18.

Richmond, VA super middleweight "The Chosen One" Immanuwel Aleem (11-0, seven KO's) is also scheduled to participate on this card. Aleem has knocked out his last four opponents.  No word yet on his foe for this bout.

Results From Washington Golden Gloves Semifinals!

Another packed house at the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center in Palmer Park, MD saw a talented group of boxers advance from the semifinals on Saturday night into the Washington Golden Gloves Championships on Saturday, April 4 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.

Let's start with the Open Division and the marquee final four grouping at 165 Pounds.  The defending regional champion, Tavon Body (Headbangers), advanced to the finals by winning over Jordan Payne (Woodland).  In the other semi, the 2013 regional champ Jerome Featherstone (Unattached) defeated Jason Bell (No Xcuse).

This means the 165 Pound Washington Golden Gloves final will match the last two regional champions in Featherstone and Body.  What's more, this is a rematch from last year's championship in which Body defeated Featherstone.

In the 141 Pound bracket, Brian Avelar (Sugar Ray Leonard) won his semi-final against Emmanuel Rodriguez (Down Under).  Avelar will have a daunting task in the finals when he matches up against 141-pound national champion Gary Antuanne Russell (Enigma).  Russell won his bout by walkover on Saturday.

Avelar's older brother, Tommy (Sugar Ray Leonard), advanced to the finals by winning a decision over Rayvon Drayton (Pound For Pound) at 132 Pounds.  Tommy Avelar will face Keeshawn Williams (The Answer).  Williams won a tough contest over Mack Allison IV (Upton).

The 123 Pound final is set as Marcus Wright (Keystone) will face Paul Jerry (Fighting For The Future) on April 4.  Wright won his bout over Christopher Glenn (Hagerstown) while Jerry defeated Hector Soto (Down Under).

Soto's brother Duglas lost his bout at 114 Pounds to Jordan White (Pound For Pound) due to injury in the first round.  Duglas Soto suffered an injury to the bridge of his nose earlier in the week but tried to compete, However, soon after the bout with White started, the ringside doctor said he could not continue.

White advances to the finals where he will face former USA number-one ranked 114-pounder Malik Jackson (Limelite) who drew a bye in the tournament.

In the 152 Pound semis, Shynggskhan Tazhibay (Headbangers) advanced to the finals by defeating Nigel Fennell (Down Under).  No word yet on who Tazhibay will face in the finals.  At 201 Pounds, Malik Titus (Upton) won his semifinal over Daquan Johnson (Sugar Ray).  Titus will take on Stephon Morris (UMAR) who won his semifinal bout last Saturday.

Moving now to the Novice Division where there were some outstanding semifinal contests.  At 152 Pounds, Sippriano Zeldon (Headbangers) won a great contest over Markee Stokes (UMAR).  Zeldon will face David Bakker (Laurel) in the championship bout.  Bakker walked over last Saturday.

In the 165 Pound semifinal, Aaron Anderson (Mack Lewis) won an exciting bout over Rashad Kilpatrick (Keystone).  Anderson will battle Stephaun Hobbs (The Answer) on April 4.

At 178 Pounds, Ambrose Anderson (Knowledge Boxing) won his semifinal bout over Davon Wheeler (NOMIS).  Darryl Lane (Enigma) awaits Anderson in the final.  Lane advanced last Saturday.

In the 201+ Pound semis, Timothy Crawford (Sugar Ray) defeated his gym mate, Ralph Alexander to advance to the finals where he will face Jimmy Speros (Olympia), who advanced last Sunday.

The 141 Pound final will be an all-Laurel affair as both Dante Cox and Evgeni Metchenov won their semi final bouts over two UMAR boxers.  Cox defeated Joshua Lee while Metchenov won by third-round stoppage over Dorian Bostic.

At 132 Pounds, Stephen Epps (Rosedale) defeated Stephen Blaylock (No Excuse) and will take on Donnell Poe (Old School) in the finals.  Poe won by walkover.

In the 123 Pound division, D'Jon Brown (NOMIS) won his semifinal over Jaqueem Hutcherson (Keystone).  Brown will take on Delonte Rawlings (Old School) in the final.

Also, Johnathan Surratt (D-Block) moved into the 201 Pound final by walkover and will face Alvin Amana (Lights Out) in the finals.  Amana walked over last Saturday.

In the final Junior Division championship bout of the tournament, Keith Cooke (No Xcuse) won the 14-15, 114 Pound title with a win over Philbert Griffith (Sugar Ray Leonard).

We hope to have the complete bout sheet for the Washington Golden Gloves championships later this week. The winners from the Washington finals will advance to the regional championships which will be held on Saturday, April 25 also at Rosecroft.

Recap From Woodlawn!

Here's a quick recap from the Shawstyle Promotions/Shabazz Promotions card that took place in front of a standing room only, turn away crowd at Martin's West in Woodlawn, MD:

The night was a successful one for the Beltway Queens as all three added new hardware to their collections.  In the main event, Ashburn, VA's Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson won a 10-round unanimous decision over Kita "Ready-Made" Watkins of Fort Worth, TX to win the Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) Junior Middleweight title.  Nelson dropped Watkins with a right hand in the second round.

Nelson won by scores of 100-89 across the board, meaning she has not lost a round in her last three contests -- a total of 24 rounds.  Nelson raises her record to 14-0-3, one KO and has won her sixth title in her third weight division.

DC flyweight Tyrieshia "Lady Tyga" Douglas put on a dominating performance en route to an eight-round TKO over Maria Suarez of Santa Maria, CA to win the UBF Flyweight title. Douglas had too much speed in her hands and feet for Suarez who just could not adjust.  Douglas knocked down Suarez in the eighth and the bout was stopped shortly after that at 1:35 of the round.

Douglas is now 9-0, four KO's and has won her third title in her second weight class. Suarez is 9-2-1.

Also, "The Bolivian Queen" Jennifer Salinas of Manassas, VA captured the UBF Super Featherweight title with a 10-round unanimous decision over Angel "Non-Stop" Gladney of Columbia, SC.  Salinas won by scores of 99-91 (twice) and 98-92 to defeat Gladney for the second time and win her second world title.  Salinas is 16-3, four KO's while Gladney falls to 8-11-1, six KO's.

In other bouts on the card, Laurel, MD middleweight Demond "D Best At It" Nicholson used solid body shots to win a second-round TKO over Edgar Perez of Chicago, IL by way of Arecibo, Puerto Rico.  Despite a 13-pound weight differential, Nicholson was precise and powerful as he dropped Perez twice during the contest with head and body shots on the way to the stoppage at 1:05 of the second.  Nicholson is now 12-1, 12 KO's while Perez is 6-13, three KO's.

Baltimore, MD cruiserweight Travis "Seveer" Reeves won a six-round unanimous decision in a rematch against Lamont "Too Smooth" Capers of Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania.  Reeves won for the second time against Capers by scores of 60-54 (twice) and 59-55.  Reeves is now 8-2-2, three KO's while Capers is 4-6.

Lightweight Joshua "Dynamite" Davis of Catonsville, MD won a six-round unanimous decision over Hilario Medina of Longmont, CO.  Davis used strong jabs to put off the awkward Medina.  Davis is now 9-1, four KO's.  Medina drops to 2-6.

Columbia, MD light heavyweight Kwame Ritter won a four-round unanimous decision over Santos Martinez of Adrian, MI.  Ritter won by shutout (40-36) on all three cards to raise his record to 2-0, one KO.  Martinez is now 2-8-1, two KO's.

The opening bout saw Devin Butcher of Baltimore stop David "Rock Steady" Rohn of Muskegon, MI at 52 seconds of the second round.  Butcher dropped Rohn late in the first round before stopping him in the second.  Butcher is 3-0, one KO while Rohn is 0-4-1.

Ritter Captures Unanimous Decision!

Kwame Ritter wins a four-round unanimous decision over Santos Martinez.   Ritter outboxed Martinez throughout the contest to get the win.  Ritter is now 2-0, one KO.  Martinez is now 2-8-1, two KO's.

Butcher Stops Rohn In Two!

Devin Butcher gets his first pro knockout as he stops David Rohn at 52 seconds of the second round.

Butcher dropped Rohn late in the first round with a solid right hand.  Rohn tried to fight back to start the second but met another right hand that dropped him for the final time.

Butcher is 3-0, one KO.  Rohn is 0-4-1.

Next up, Kwame Ritter of Columbia,  MD takes on Santos Martinez of Adrian, MI.  Four rounds, light heavyweights.

Very fascinating article from Joshua R. Smith of the Frederick (MD) News-Post about undefeated Frederick super middleweight Devar "The Warrior" Ferhadi.

Apparently, Ferhadi (4-0, three KO's), who will battle Rashad Jones of Selma, AL on Friday's card at Martin's West in Woodlawn, MD, is here on a business trip of sorts.  On Saturday, he will return to his native Kurdistan to continue medical school.

Legendary Beltway Coach 'Thunder' Hughes Profiled in City Paper!

The Washington City Paper has a wonderful article on one of the true legends of the Beltway Boxing community -- Eugene "Thunder" Hughes.  Writer Chris Opfer details how Mr. Hughes has managed to keep his Midtown Youth Academy operating despite the many years of change along the 14th Street corridor of Northwest DC.

Mr. Hughes is one of the truly great men that I have had the pleasure to meet in this business!

'Cujo' Sigmon Added to Gonzalez-Russell Undercard; Johnson, Pettway, Harrison Appear at Amateur Card in Glen Burnie!

Bedford, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon will face Mayweather Promotions prospect J'Leon Love of Dearborn Heights, MI in an eight-round contest on Saturday, March 28 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV.  The bout will be on the undercard of the WBC Featherweight title bout between champion Jhonny Gonzalez and challenger Gary Russell, Jr.

Sigmon (24-6-1, 13 KO's) is coming off an eight-round TKO loss to Caleb Truax on November 1 in Chicago, IL.  Love (18-1, 10 KO's) returns to the venue where he suffered his first pro loss -- a third-round knockout to Rogelio Medina on August 30.

There is a possibility that the bout may appear on the Showtime Extreme telecast that will precede the Gonzalez-Russell main event that will be on Showtime.

We told you about the amateur boxing card that will take place on Friday, March 27 at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.  Now comes word that some noted local boxing luminaries will be on hand to greet fans and sign autographs.

International Boxing Hall of Famer and three-time world champion Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson, former IBF Junior Middleweight champion Vincent "The Ambassador" Pettway and undefeated welterweight Dusty Hernandez Harrison will be on hand to chat with VIP ticketholders as well as sign autographs and take photos.  Joining these celebrities will be former five-time world champion Vinny Paz.

Post-Fight From The Sphinx Club In DC!

Here's the Post-Fight Wrap-Up from the Keystone Boxing card at the Sphinx Club in Washington, DC.  Juan Marshall and I recap the card and talk to Marq "Monster" Johns and Mike "Yes, Indeed" Reed who won bouts on the card.  To hear the calls of some of the bouts on the card, download the BATB Google App.

Reed, Johns, Harris Score Knockout Wins!

We tried some live broadcasts of the remaining bouts on the card so we could not blog like we did earlier.  You can hear the broadcasts on the Google App.

Mike "Yes, Indeed" Reed maintained his undefeated record with a second-round stoppage of Edgar Soto.   Reed dropped Soto twice in the first round then sent Soto to his knees with a minute to go in the second round before the bout was stopped at 2:10.

Reed is now 13-0, seven KO's while Soto falls to 12-8, four KO's.

In the co-feature, Marq "Monster" Johns of Fort Washington, MD stopped Bryan Perez-Navarez of Carolina, Puerto Rico in the third round.   

Johns knocked Perez-Navarez four times -- twice in the first and twice in the third before Perez-Navarez was knocked out at 2:01 of the third.  Johns is now 6-0, five KO's while Perez-Navarez drops to 2-2, one KO,

Also, Hyattsville, MD super lightweight Patrick Harris scored a second-round knockout over Carlos Acevedo of Aguadilla, PR.  Harris threw a vicious series of body shots to gain the victory at 36 seconds of the second round.  Harris is now 5-0, four KO's while Acevedo is 0-3.

Gaines Wins Four-Round Unanimous Decision!

In his best outing to date, Renaldo "Misunderstood" Gaines captured a four-round unanimous decision over Marquise Pierce.

Gaines repeatedly found a home with his left hand using jabs, hooks and body shots.  Gaines would go on to a win with scores of 40-36 and 39-37 (twice). 

Gaines is now 6-2, one KO while Pierce is 1-5.

Fox Hammers DeLeon In One!

Easy work for Myke Fox as he stops Thomas DeLeon at 1:51 of the first round.

DeLeon had no shot as Fox hammered him with great body shots until the bout was stopped.  

Fox is now 6-0, KO's while DeLeon is 0-2.

Sadikaj Scores Second-Round TKO!

Albi Sadikaj has scored a second-round TKO over the debuting Jose Alexis Rivera.  

Sadikaj battered Rivera in the second round with some solid right hands, eventually getting the win at 1:42. 

Sadikaj is now 3-0, three KO's.  Rivera makes his pro debut. 

Myke Fox is next against Thomad DeLeon.

Marin Wins Unanimous Decision!

Alexandru Marin has won a six-round unanimous decision over an awkward and game Arturo Santiago.

Marin had a tough time landing clean shots but Santiago was in defensive mode throughout the bout.  Marin was definitely the more offensive-minded boxer.

Marin is now 6-0, four KO's as he goes the six-round distance for the first time.  Santiago is now 7-11, one KO.

Next: The return of "The Golden Goat" Albi Sadikaj as he takes on the debuting Jose Alexis Rivera.   Four rounds, cruiserweights.

Warden Wins Pro Debut With Second-Round TKO!

Chris Warden won his pro debut with a second-round TKO over Marshawn Hughes, who was making a transition from MMA.

Warden followed the awkward Hughes all around the ring battering him along the way.

 At one point, Hughes briefly reverted to his MMA roots and tried to hit Warden with a spinning back fist.  Warden won the contest at 2:36.

Next up is Alexandru "The Spartan" Marin taking on Arturo Santiago.  Six rounds, bantamweights.

Williams Opens Card With First-Round TKO!

Joseph Williams of Far Rockaway, NY opens the action with a first-round TKO over the debuting Jorge Alvarez. 

Williams dominated from the opening bell, hitting Alvarez with solid body and head shots.  Alvarez eventually succumbed and the bout was stopped at 2:02.

Williams is still perfect at 4-0, four KO'S.

Next up, a battle of debuting lightweights- Chris "The Rock" Warden of Lusby, MD against Marshawn Hughes of South Bend,  IN.

The Wifi is a bit suspect but we will do our best.  The first bout is a four-round cruiserweight contest between Joseph "Mack" Williams and Jorge Ernesto Alvarez.

Douglas Dominates LaManna For Sixth-Round Stoppage!

Antoine Douglas made a solid statement tonight in the main event of the ShoBox card at the Space at Westbury, NY stopping a very game Thomas LaManna in the sixth round.

Douglas broke down LaManna with solid shots throughout the contest eventually dropping LaManna three times before the bout was stopped at 2:44 of the sixth round.

Douglas remains undefeated at 17-0-1, 11 KO's while LaManna falls for the first time in his career (also gets stopped for the first time in his career) and he is now 16-1, seven KO's.

Odom Gains Revenge; Stops Hernandez in First!

The rematch for "The King's Son" Jerry Odom took less than three minutes at the Space at Westbury, NY.  Odom caught Andrew "Hurricane" Hernandez late in the first round with some vicious left and right hands that forced the referee to stop the contest at 2:47.

Odom, of Bowie, MD is now 13-1, 12 KO's.  Hernandez, of Phoenix, AZ who vehemently protested the stoppage, loses for the first time and is now 8-1-1, one KO.

In their first fight in January, Odom knocked Hernandez down but was disqualified for hitting Hernandez while he was down.

Antoine Douglas and Jerry Odom hit the scales for their nationally televised contests Friday night at the Space at Westbury, NY.

Douglas weighed 160 pounds for his 10-round main event contest against Thomas La Manna, who tipped the scales at 158 pounds.

Both Odom and Andrew Hernandez weighed in at 168 pounds for their eight-round co-feature rematch.

Jerrell Harris is no longer on the undercard due to an injury to his opponent. There is talk that Harris may appear on the March 28th card at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.

The card will be a Shobox card that will be shown on Showtime beginning at 10 PM ET.

Ballard Scores First-Round TKO in San Antonio!

Temple Hills, MD super middleweight D'Mitrius "Big Meech" Ballard has scored a first-round TKO tonight over Jason Zabokrtsky at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, TX.

Ballard stopped Zabokrtsky with a left hook to the body at 1:10 of the first round.  Ballard remains undefeated at 9-0, eight KO's while Zabokrtsky loses for the first time and he is now 3-1, three KO's.

Ballard Weighs 171 1/2 For Six-Rounder in San Antonio!

D'Mitrius Ballard tipped the scales at 171 1/2 pounds for his six-round contest against Jason Zabokrtsky tonight at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, TX.  Zabokrtsky weighed 170 pounds.

Amateur Boxing Show in Baltimore Honors Five-Time National Silver Gloves Champion!

There will be an amateur boxing card on Saturday, March 14 in Baltimore, MD that will honor one of the city's brightest amateur boxing stars.

The card will celebrate the achievements of Lorenzo Simpson who has won five consecutive national Silver Gloves championships.  The card will be held at St. Frances Academy, located at 501 East Chase Street in Baltimore.  All tickets are $20 and the card begins at 6 PM.

By attending, you can also celebrate Simpson's birthday which is on March 14.

Kevin Rivers, Jr. Signs With Golden Boy Promotions!

BATB has received word that undefeated Palmer Park, MD super featherweight Kevin "K-Smoove" Rivers, Jr. has signed a promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions.

Rivers (11-0, eight KO's) has scored technical knockouts in his last two outings including a third-round TKO over Stephon McIntyre on January 17 in Washington, DC.

Rivers joins D'Mitrius Ballard and Lamont Roach, Jr. as current Golden Boy signees from the Beltway.

Ballard Battles Undefeated Zabokrtsky Thursday In San Antonio!

Undefeated Temple Hills, MD super middleweight D'Mitrius "Big Meech" Ballard returns to action on Thursday, March 12 when he faces fellow undefeated boxer Jason Zabokrtsky of Topeka, KS in a six-round contest at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, TX.

Ballard (8-0, seven KO's) has knocked out his last five opponents, including his last outing, a third-round knockout of Tylon Burris on December 6 in Brooklyn, NY.

Zabokrtsky (3-0, three KO's) has not fought since December of 2013 but he has yet to go past the second round.

The bout will be part of a card that will be shown on HBO Latino.  No word on whether Ballard's bout will make television.

There will be a Golden Gloves Weekend this weekend as there will be back-to-back days of competition.  First, the regular Saturday night event on Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 PM followed by a special Sunday afternoon matinee on March 15 at 3 PM.

BATB can't be at the Saturday card due to coverage of the pro show in DC that night.  However, we do plan to be at the matinee on Sunday afternoon.

Update on March 14 DC Card!

The Beltway Boxing version of "March Madness" begins in earnest on Saturday, March 14 with the Keystone Boxing card at the Sphinx Club at Franklin Square located at 1315 K Street in Northwest DC.  Here's the current lineup.

The main event features undefeated Waldorf, MD junior welterweight Mike "Yes, Indeed" Reed taking on veteran Eddie Soto of Pawtucket, RI in an eight-round contest.  Reed (12-0, six KO's) returns to the Beltway for the first time since April of 2014.  Reed was the 2014 Beltway Boxing Prospect of the Year.

 A Top Rank signee, Reed has fought his last three bouts on the road, including his last outing -- an eight-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Oscar Valenzuela on November 29 in Omaha, NB.

Soto (12-7, four KO's) is also no stranger to the Beltway area as he lost by fifth-round TKO to Dusty Hernandez Harrison in May of 2013 at the UDC Physical Activities Center in DC.  Soto started his career winning his first 12 bouts but has since lost seven in a row.

The co-feature bout will be a six-round contest between undefeated Fort Washington, MD resident Marq "Monster" Johns and Bryan Perez -Navarez of Carolina, Puerto Rico.   Johns (5-0-1, four KO's) is coming off a four-round unanimous decision win over Jaxel Marrero on January 17 at the Washington Convention Center. Johns scored the Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year in 2014 when he stopped Luis Hernandez in the second round on July 18 in Fort Washington, MD.

Perez-Navarez (2-1, one KO) has won two straight since losing his pro debut.  In his last outing, Perez-Navarez won a four-round decision over Kevin Vasquez on July 11 in Humacao, PR.  This will be the first six-round bout for both fighters.

Hyattsville, MD super lightweight Patrick Harris will be in a four-round contest against Carlos Acevedo of Aguadilla, PR.  Harris (4-0, three KO's) scored a first-round TKO over Sean Lockhart on the January 17th card in DC.  Acevedo (0-2) has been stopped in the first round in both of his losses.

District Heights, MD lightweight Renaldo "Misunderstood" Gaines is in a four-round encounter against Marquise Pierce of Phillipsburg, NJ.  Gaines (5-2, one KO) returned to action after an almost two-year absence and won a four-round unanimous decision over Arthur Parker on January 17 in DC.  Pierce (1-4) will be trying to break a four-bout losing streak.  Pierce fought in the Beltway region in July of 2013 and lost a four-round unanimous decision to Glenn Dezurn in Baltimore, MD.

In another four-round bout, Fort Washington, MD cruiserweight "The Golden Goat" Albi Sadikaj makes his return to boxing in a four-round bout against James Jenkins of Atlanta, GA.  Sadikaj (2-0, two KO's) has not fought since scoring a second round TKO over Alando Pugh in September of 2013 in Baltimore.  Jenkins (1-2-1, one KO) was stopped in the first round by Jay Rodriguez in his last contest on September 20 in Queens, NY.

Undefeated featherweight Alexandru Marin of Silver Spring, MD moves into the six-round bout camp with his contest against Arturo Santiago of Mayaquez, PR.  Marin (5-0, four KO's) scored a third-round TKO over Rasool Shakoor on September 27 in Springfield, VA.  Santiago (7-10-1, four KO's) will be facing an undefeated boxer for the fifth straight time.

This card will mark the pro debut of Lusby, MD lightweight Chris "The Rock" Warden who will take on the equally debuting Marshawn Hughes of South Bend, IN.  Warden was a prominent amateur in the area from 2008-2010 participating in the Junior Olympics, Washington Golden Gloves and the Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic.  Hughes begins a transition to boxing from the Mixed Martial Arts world.

Also scheduled to be on the card are undefeated Forestville, MD lightweight Mykal "The Professor" Fox (5-0, one KO) and light heavyweight Joseph "Mack" Williams (3-0, three KO's) of Far Rockaway, NJ.  Both are still looking for opponents.

This will be the first of four pro cards in a three-week period along the Beltway.  There will also be pro cards on March 20 (at Martin's West in Woodlawn, MD), 21 and 28 (both at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA) as well as one amateur card in Glen Burnie, MD on March 27 and the Washington Golden Gloves happening in Palmer Park, MD all throughout March.

Williams Falls In Two Against Jones, Jr.!

We are hearing word that Willie "For Real" Williams suffered a second-round knockout at the hands of former world champion Roy Jones, Jr. Friday night at the Carrabus Arena in Concord, NC.

According to video from the bout, Jones staggered Williams with a left hand and then used the same hand to drop Williams to the canvas.  Williams rose to his feet but referee Bill Clancy ruled him unfit to continue.

Williams is now 14-9-2, four KO's while Jones gets his 60th pro victory and he is now 60-8, 43 KO's.

Local Trainer Maxell Taylor, Sr. Helps Family Escape From Burning Home!

You may remember almost 10 years ago when former Beltway Boxer Boyer "Sugar Boy" Chew saved himself and many others when the truck he was driving burst into flames on Interstate 95.

Now, another local boxing personality is in the news for heroic deeds as he helped save a family from a burning home in his Edgewood neighborhood early Friday morning.

Boxing coach, trainer and Maryland Boxing Hall of Famer Maxell Taylor, Sr. awoke around three o'clock Friday morning to the sounds of his neighbors screaming.  A family of five -- four children and their mother -- were inside their burning home.  Taylor convinced the family to jump out of the third-story window and he caught the mother and three of the children.  Firefighters rescued the fourth child.   WBAL-TV reports that all four children, ages 4, 8, 10 and 12, were taken to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Center for non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released.

The mother was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview for treatment of mild smoke inhalation injuries and injuries suffered from jumping out of the window. She is expected to be released Friday.

Taylor has lived in the community for more than 20 years and told WBAL-TV that he talked the family into jumping to escape the fire.

"I heard the mother say, 'Mr. Max, help us.' I said, 'Go down the steps.' She said, 'We can't.' Then I said, 'Jump out the window.' She said, 'I'm scared.' But I said, 'You're going to have to to save your life,'" Taylor said.

Taylor is the father of Beltway pros Emmanuel "Transforma" Taylor and Maxell "The General" Taylor.

'Snap, Crackle And Pop' Amateur Card Comes to Michael's March 27!

Baltimore Boxing Promotions will bring an amateur boxing card called "Snap, Crackle and Pop" to Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD on Friday, March 27.

Headlining the card will be popular junior middleweight Joey Veazey of Baltimore who will take on DC's Lamont White for the East Coast Junior Middleweight title.  Veazey was slated to headline the January 23 card at Michael's but suffered an injury and could not compete.  Veazey captured a Silver medal at the National Junior Golden Gloves in 2014.

Heavyweight Sam Crossed will defend his East Coast title against Jeff Knight in the co-feature.  Back in 2013, Crossed scored a four-second knockout in a bout.

Also scheduled to be on the card is Tommy Coe, Jr. who won a junior Golden Gloves title at Sugar Ray Leonard Gym last Saturday.

In association with this solid evening of fights, Baltimore Boxing is hosting a special 50/50 raffle for the Brooke and Nathan Fenush Scholarship Fund. The fund was created to assist Baltimore County Fire Department Lieutenant Paul Fenush, whose wife recently passed away.

Bus Trip Heads To Brooklyn For Peterson Battles April 11!

There will be a bus trip heading to Brooklyn, NY for the April 11 card at the Barclays Center that features the matchup between Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia as well as Anthony Peterson competing on the card.

The bus trip, sponsored by the Potomac Valley Association of USA Boxing and the Headbangers Gym, costs $60 round trip and ticket prices for the card are $57, $87, $107, $207 and $307.  These tickets cost $50 less than buying tickets from Ticketmaster because Ticketmaster adds fees and taxes.  The bus will leave from the Answer Gym in Capitol Heights, MD at 10 AM on the 11th.

Beltway Boxing Update!

A couple of updates on some Beltway News:

There are some changes to the Shawstyle Promotions/Shabazz Promotions card on Friday, March 20 at Martin's West in Woodlawn, MD.  The opponent for Tyrieshia "Lady Tyga" Douglas has changed.  Douglas (8-0, three KO's) will now take on Maria Suarez of Santa Maria, CA for the vacant UBF Flyweight world title.  Suarez (9-1-1) last fought on January 9 and won a six-round majority decision over Jolene Blackshear in Santa Ynez, CA.

Suarez replaces Chantel Cordova, who suffered an injury in training.  Suarez holds a victory over Cordova, which may be one of the reasons why Boxrec.com has given this bout three out of five stars.

Also on this card, Demond "D Best At It" Nicholson (11-1, 11 KO's) has a new opponent in Edgar Perez of Chicago, IL for his six-round clash.  Perez (6-12, three KO's) is no stranger to this area or to Beltway Boxers.  Perez is the only man to take Jerry Odom the distance, losing a four-round unanimous decision in Springfield, VA.  Perez also lost a unanimous decision to Antoine Douglas and Perez's last win came in Springfield, VA in June of 2014 when he won a six-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Lavarn Harvell.  Harvell has not fought since that loss.


We are hearing that "The Pride of Alexandria (VA)" Brandon Quarles has been added to the Jeter Promotions/RBA Promotions card on Saturday, March 28 at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.  No word yet on his opponent.

Also, Gary Russell, Jr's title quest against WBC Featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez on March 28 now has a home -- the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV.  The bout will be on Showtime.

Alfred Grant Funeral Services Announced!

There is information concerning the funeral services for DC Boxing And Wrestling Deputy Commissioner Alfred Grant.

The service will be on Friday, March 6 at the Silver Spring Civic Building, located at #1 Veterans Place in Silver Spring, MD. The service will begin at 10 AM.

First Night Of Washington Golden Gloves Completed!

A packed crowd at the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center in Palmer Park, MD saw an active opening night of competition during the first night of the Washington Golden Gloves tournament on Saturday.

Because of the postponement of the first round last Saturday, there was action in all three divisions -- Junior, Novice and Open -- on Saturday.  That usually doesn't happen on the first night.

Five champions were crowned in the Junior Division.  Damari Philson of No Xcuse won the title in the 8-9, 70 Pound division with a win over Marcell Steele of Headbangers.  Muhammad Robinson of Upton captured the 11-12, 80 Pound class by defeating Jahmal Harvey of Keystone.

In the 9, 85 Pound division, Thomas Coe, Jr. of Lights Out captured the title with a win over Keystone's Khaliq Harrison.  In the 12, 95 Pound class, Maximus Garland of Headbangers won over Daylynn Jones of #11 Overcomers.  Also, in the 12-13, 85 Pound class, Deric Davis of Headbangers won the title, defeating Ervin Canlas of Keystone.

Here are the results for first-round Junior Division bouts:

13, 112 Pounds: Stacey Selby (No Xcuse) over Kyron Curry (UMAR)

15-16, 152 Pounds: Jaseye Stephens (Hagerstown) over Corey Russ (Woodland)

15-16, 178 Pounds: Aziz McIlwain (Sugar Ray Leonard) over Caleb Andrews (Langdon)

14-15, 95 Pounds: Kevon Cooke (No Xcuse)

13-14, 106 Pounds: Chamar Flowers (Unattached)

13-14, 120 Pounds: Donte Baytop (UMAR)

14-15, 125 Pounds: Criss Dzaringa (Mobtown)

13-14, 139 Pounds: Nasheed Smith (Headbangers)


There were two stoppages in the Novice Division.  Evegueny Metchenov of Laurel scored a third-round stoppage over Brandon Etheridge of Hillcrest in the 141 Pound class while Ta'vaughn Williams (Unattached) stopped Wesley Best (Enigma) in the first round at 165 Pounds.  Williams, by the way, is the younger brother of highly-touted pro prospect Thomas Williams, Jr. 

One of the better bouts of the evening also took place in the Novice 165 Pound division.  Aaron Anderson (Mack Lewis) won an exciting slugfest over Jalil Hunter (Headbangers).

In the 152 Pound division, David Baker (Laurel) advanced to the next round by defeating Vance Roberts (Langdon).

Two bouts started competition in the Open Division. At 152 Pounds, Shynggskhan Tazhibay (Headbangers) won a decision over Alonzo Thompson (Cherry Lane).  Also, Jordon Payne (Woodland) defeated Kerry Brewster (No Limits) at 165 Pounds.

The Tournament continues on Saturday, March 7 at Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center at 7:30 PM.
