Upper Marlboro, MD super featherweight Lamont Roach, Jr. made the first successful defense of his WBC Youth Silver Super Featherweight championship with a 10-round unanimous decision over Jesus A. Valdez of Huatabampo, Sonora, Mexico tonight at the Fantasy Springs Hotel and Casino in Indio, CA.
In going 10 rounds for the first time in his pro career, the judges saw Roach, Jr. in control of the contest, winning the bout by scores of 100-90, 98-92 and 97-93. Roach remains undefeated with a record of 14-0, five KO's. Valdez's record drops to 20-3-1, nine KO's.

Local Amateurs Capture More National Titles At Junior Olympic Championships!
Three more Beltway amateurs have won national titles over the past two days of competition at the Junior Olympic, Prep National and Youth Championships at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, WVA.
Today's action saw Khaliq Harrison of Fort Washington, MD win the Bantam 95 Pound championship with a 5-0 decision over Mario Rodriguez of Providence, RI. Also, Jalil Hackett of Washington, DC earned the Intermediate 114 Pound title with a 3-2 win over Gustavo Garrido of San Antonio, TX.
During Thursday's competition, Kairee Kelly of DC won the Pee Wee 8 Open/65 Pounds championship with a 5-0 decision over Kartiere Gilmore of Solon, OH.

Jeffrey Gildenhorn, Restauranteur And Former DC Boxing And Wrestling Commission Chair, Dies At 74!

Jeffrey Gildenhorn, a noted and popular restaurant owner who once served as chair of the District of Columbia Boxing And Wrestling Commission, passed away suddenly at the age of 74. Reports say Mr. Gildenhorn died after choking while dining Wednesday night at the popular Palm restaurant in DC. Mr. Gildenhorn was taken to George Washington University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Mr. Gildenhorn, a native of DC, was the long-time owner of the American City Diner in Northwest and was a popular fixture in business and politics in the Nation's Capitol. In the mid-1990's, Mr. Gildenhorn served on the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission -- he was a commissioner for two years and then served as chair for one year. In 1998, he made an unsuccessful bid for DC Mayor.
Funeral services are pending. Mr. Gildenhorn was the first chair of the DC Boxing Commission that I had the opportunity to work with. He was a nice man who would have his commission meetings at his restaurant and feed everyone who came to them. His name was very well-known throughout the city and he will truly be missed. Lamont Roach, Jr. weighed in at 129.8 pounds for his 10-round contest against Jesus Valdez on Friday, June 30th at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA. Roach, Jr. will be defending his WBC Youth Silver Super Featherweight title. Valdez came in at 129.6 pounds.

Carter Captures Youth Female Title At Junior Olympic Championships!
Congratulations to Baltimore, MD's Candice Carter who won the 112 Pound Youth Female championship on the second day of competition Wednesday at the 2017 Junior Olympic, Prep National and Youth Open championships at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, WVA.
Carter defeated Bernadette Malendrez of Merced, CA by a 5-0 score to capture the title. Carter's victory was part of a busy day for Beltway amateurs. Here are results from Wednesday's competition:

Boxing Returns To Michael's Eighth Avenue July 13th!
A battle of experience versus youth will headline the next Baltimore Pro Boxing card on Thursday, July 13th at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.
Longtime Beltway fan favorite Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow will be in the main event taking on Sherman "The Tank" Artis of Severn, MD in an eight-round super middleweight contest. Nicklow (26-8-3, eight KO's) was the first BATB Rookie Of The Year in 2006. Nicklow is undefeated (24-0-3) in the state of Maryland, winning his last contest on January 13th at Michaels, an eight-round unanimous decision over Chauncey Fields. Nicklow has faced a who's who of solid competition in his career, including former world champion Jermain Taylor and contenders Fernando Guerrero, Ryota Murata and Ronald Gavril.
Although Artis (3-1) started his career in 2010, he has only fought four times as a pro. Artis returned to action after an almost three-year absence and won a four-round unanimous decision over Steve Wheeler on March 30th at Michael's.
In a four-round bout on the card, Baltimore middleweight "Dangerous" Donald Wallace will face off with Shane Pearson of Statesville, NC. Wallace (2-0-1, one KO) will look to improve off of a six-round majority draw against Gregory Clark on the last Michael's card on May 12th. Pearson (2-1, two KO's) makes a quick return to the Beltway, having scored a shocking first-round TKO over Stephon Morris on June 17th at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore.
Also on the card, undefeated Glenarden, MD super lightweight Drayvontay Speed-Rawls returns to action in a six-round contest against the incredibly busy Matt Murphy of St. Louis, MO. Speed-Rawls comes off a third-round stoppage of Rynell Griffin on March 25th in Washington, DC. Murphy (2-13-3, two KO's) will be competing for the 10th time in 2017. Murphy comes off back-to-back draws over a five-day period. On June 17th in Baltimore, Murphy held undefeated Mack Allison IV to a four-round majority draw. Five days later, on June 22nd, Murphy traveled cross country to Los Angeles, CA and battled Zachary Wohlman to a four-round split decision draw.
Also scheduled to be on the card are IBO International Bantamweight champion Alexandru "Spartan" Marin of Bethesda, MD and junior lightweight Ernest "Lightning Bug" Hall of Baltimore. Marin (13-0, nine KO's) comes off a six-round unanimous decision over German Meraz on May 20th at the MGM National Harbor Casino in Oxon Hill, MD and will be in an eight-round contest on this card. Hall (2-0, one KO) won a four-round unanimous decision over Lamont White on March 30th at Michael's. Hall is scheduled to participate in a six-round contest for the first time as a pro.

Suitland, MD super welterweight Lenwood "Mr. Composure" Dozier lost a six-round unanimous decision to Darryl Cunningham of Detroit, MI on Friday, June 23 at the Motor City Casino in Detroit.
Dozier lost the bout by scores of 59-55 across the board. Dozier has lost his last six bouts and his record falls to 10-18-2, five KO's. Cunningham is now 36-9, 14 KO's.

Beltway Boxers Score Mixed Results In Philadelphia!
Four Beltway Boxers were part of an exciting Kings Promotions card of action at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, PA Saturday night. They left the town with mixed results.
Undefeated Washington, DC bantamweight Marcus "The Dreamcrusher" Bates won a six-round unanimous decision over a very game Roberto "Escorpion" Pucheta of La Villa de Cuerámbaro, Jalisco, Mexico. According to reports, Bates had to survive a solid Pucheta onslaught early on before coming on strong in the middle rounds. Bates knocked down Pucheta in the fifth round with a left hand and went on to win the bout by scores of 59-54 and 58-55 (twice). Bates is now 7-0-1, six KO's while Pucheta falls to 10-12-1, six KO's and loses to a Beltway Boxer for the second consecutive time. Pucheta dropped a six-round unanimous decision to Kevin Rivers, Jr. on May 24th in Santa Monica, CA.

According to the Madison camp, Madison was hampered by a broken right hand he suffered in the first round. Caudle won the bout on one judge's scorecard, 58-56. However, that judge was overruled by two judges seeing the draw, 57-57. Madison, who went six rounds for the first time in his career, is now 4-0-1, three KO's. Caudle is now 7-0-1, five KO's.

Congratulations to Alexandria, VA middleweight Troy Isley who recently qualified for the Elite Men's World Championships which will take place August 25th-September 3rd in Hamburg, Germany.
Isley punched his ticket to the world championships in Tegucigalpa, Honduras on June 17th, winning a 5-0 decision over Hebert Sousa of Brazil. This bout was during the 2017 Continental Championships.
This is a nice bounce-back victory for Isley, who was upset in the first-round of the National Golden Gloves in May.

Roach (13-0, five KO's) returns to the location where he won his title in his last contest, scoring a crushing first-round knockout over Alejandro Valdez on January 28th. Valdez (20-2-1, nine KO's) makes his first trip to the continental United States. Valdez has won his last four bouts in his native Mexico but all four of those wins were against under-.500 competition.

Maryland Boxers Split Pro Debuts In Harrisburg, PA!
Two Maryland Boxers made pro debuts on a card at the Small Arena PA Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, PA on June 17th.
Salisbury, MD light heavyweight Ryan Watson made a successful debut winning a four-round unanimous decision over the equally debuting Carl Murphy of Harrisburg. According to well-known boxing writer JR Jowett, Murphy won a close bout by scores of 39-37 across the board.
Also on the card, Baltimore, MD welterweight Dan Koch lost his pro debut by first-round knockout to debuting Roy McGill of Harrisburg. Jowett reports that Koch was caught by a McGill right hand that dropped him face first on the canvas. The bout was stopped at 2:21 of the round.

T. Douglas Captures UBF Super Flyweight Title With Fourth-Round TKO!
Tyriesha "Lady Tiga" Douglas won the vacant Universal Boxing Federation Female Super Flyweight championship with a fourth-round TKO over previously undefeated Ebony "The Storm" Rivera of Fayetteville, NC at the Coppermine Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD. The bout was the main event of the Shabazz Brotherz card.
Douglas, a native of Washington, DC who trains in Baltimore, used extremely quick hands to set up her power shots. At first, Rivera seemed to withstand the early onslaught but by the second round, the speed of Douglas proved to be too much as Douglas would land three or four shots in an exchange while Rivera could only land one shot.
Douglas picked up the pace in the third round as she landed blistering shots to Rivera's face and body that seemed to stagger Rivera throughout the two-minute stanza. Rivera gamely tried to fight back and survived the round. Finally in the fourth round, Rivera landed a right hand but Douglas landed a quick combination that knocked Rivera backwards. Referee Brent Bovell immediately stopped the contest, giving Douglas the win and the title at 35 seconds of the round. Douglas wins her third UBF title in her third weight class (flyweight, super flyweight and bantamweight) and her record rises to 12-1, five KO's Rivera loses for the first time and her record is 7-1, three KO's.
In the co-feature, Baltimore light heavyweight Travis "Seveer" Reeves defeated Josue "Chiquilin" Obando of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico by fourth-round disqualification. Reeves, the reigning USBO Light Heavyweight and Maryland State Cruiserweight titleholder, had some difficulty generating an offense against the taller Obando. However, Obando did not help his cause at all as he lost two points for holding the arms of Reeves. Finally, on the third infraction, referee Kenny Chevalier disqualified Obando at 19 seconds of the fourth round. Reeves has won 12 straight contests and his record is now 15-2-2, seven KO's. Obando has lost nine in a row and he is now 14-16-1, 11 KO's.
The rest of the night proved to be a rough one for local boxers. Shane Pearson, a middleweight from Statesville, NC, scored a stunning first-round TKO over previously undefeated Stephon "The Surgeon" Morris of Baltimore. Morris, who fought for the first time since the passing of his father in March, could not get going as Pearson rocked Morris with a huge right hand. Moments later, another right hand from Pearson dropped Morris to the canvas. Referee Dave Braslow immediately stopped the bout and Pearson got the win at 2:10. Morris falls to 4-1, three KO's while Pearson, who competed for the first time in almost five years, is now 2-1, two KO's.
Also on the card, middleweight Aidos Yerbossynuly of Almaty, Kazahkstan totally negated the offense of Baltimore's Devin "Bite" Butcher en route to an easy six-round unanimous decision. Yerbossynuly, making only his second appearance in the United States, showed impressive defensive skills as he was able to cut off Butcher at every turn. Offensively, Yerbossynuly was able to land solid shots to the head and body of Butcher, who had no answer for any of his opponent's tactics. Butcher can claim a moral victory as he is the first boxer to make Yerbossynuly go the distance. Yerbossynuly won by scores of 60-53 and 59-54 (twice) to remain undefeated at 6-0, five KO's. Butcher drops to 6-2, three KO's.
Baltimore super featherweight Mack "Papi" Allison IV battled to a four-round majority draw with Matt Murphy of St. Louis, MO. In going the distance for the first time in his career, Allison got off to a good start as he landed quality shots in the first round. However, Murphy was able to work his way inside and outwork Allison in parts of the contest. Allison was able to win one scorecard as judge John Gradowski scored the bout 39-37. However Brent Bovell and Dave Braslow saw the draw at 38-38. Allison remains undefeated at 7-0-1, seven KO's. While Murphy is now 2-13-2, two KO's.
Newport News, VA heavyweight Jerry "Slug" Forrest won a six-round unanimous decision over veteran Grover "The Cobra" Young of Memphis, TN. In a battle of southpaw heavies, Forrest used a blistering right jab throughout the contest to keep Young at bay. Forrest could not follow up with big left hands consistently but his jab was more than enough to give him the win. Forrest won by scores of 59-55 (twice) and 58-56 to raise his record to 16-2, 13 KO's. Since suffering those back-to-back losses, Forrest has won nine in a row. Young falls to 12-24-3, eight KO's and is winless in his last 11 bouts.
Brian Dillon did the matchmaking on this card and the ring announcer was Henry "Discombobulating" Jones.
The South Atlantic Association of USA Boxing sanctioned three amateur bouts on the card. In the featured bout, Baltimore's six-time National Silver Gloves champion Lorenzo "Truck" Simpson stopped Ashton "The Goon" Sykes of Columbia, MD in a 178-pound open contest. Also, Destiny Day-Owens of Baltimore won a decision over Clinton, MD's Shevon Lewis in a 141-pound novice female contest and Musa Robinson of Baltimore won an 80-pound open contest over Jeremiah Jimason of Oxon Hill, MD.

June 17th Baltimore Card Begins To Fill Out!

Beltway Boxers Travel To Philadelphia June 24th!
Four Beltway Boxers will be heading to the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, PA to compete on a Kings Promotions card on Saturday, June 24th.
In six-round contests, Washington, DC featherweight Marcus "The Dreamcrusher" Bates will take on Roberto "Escorpion" Pucheta of La Villa de Cuerámbaro, Jalisco, Mexico. Bates (6-0-1, six KO's) is coming off an explosive six-round TKO over Alec McGee on February 11th at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD. Pucheta (10-11-1, six KO's) will be taking on a Beltway Boxer for the second straight time. Pucheta lost a six-round unanimous decision to Kevin Rivers, Jr. on May 24th in Santa Monica, CA. This bout was originally scheduled to take place on the June 3rd Kings Promotions card at Rosecroft. However, Pucheta was deemed unfit to compete.
Also, DC super welterweight Gregory "Glizzy" Clark will battle Darryl "Dreamking" Bunting of Asbury Park, NJ. Clark (2-1-1, one KO) comes off a tough six-round majority draw with Donald Wallace on May 12th in Glen Burnie, MD. Bunting, a native of Marietta, GA (3-1-2, one KO) will try to build off a four-round unanimous decision victory over Juan Zapata on November 11th in Chester, PA. Bunting will be competing for the first time in a scheduled six-round encounter.
In four-round bouts, Jordan "Kidd" Peters of DC will be in a lightweight battle with "Pretty Boy" Chaise Nelson of Dayton, OH. Peters (2-0-1, two KO's) fought on the June 3rd Rosecroft show and got off of the canvas in the first round to score a second round stoppage of Bryan Perez-Navarez. Ironically, Nelson (5-1, three KO's) also scored his last victory over Perez-Navarez, winning a four-round unanimous decision on May 12th at the Sugar House Casino in Philadelphia.
Owings Mills, MD heavyweight Colby Madison (4-0, three KO's) is also slated to appear on this card in a four-round contest. Madison has not fought since scoring a first-round TKO over Lamarco Ellis on February 4th in Wilson, NC.

White Loses Unanimous Decision In New Jersey!
Washington, DC super lightweight Lamont White lost a four-round unanimous decision to Tomas Romain of Brooklyn, NY on Saturday at the Claridge Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. White lost by scores of 40-36 (twice) and 39-37.
White, who scored his first pro win in his last outing, now has a record of 1-8, one KO, one NC. White has never been stopped in a contest, one of his losses came by disqualification. Romain is now 3-1.

Nicholson Drops Split Decision In New York!
Laurel, MD super middleweight Demond "D Best At It" Nicholson lost a tough eight-round split decision to undefeated Steve "Mr." Rolls of Toronto, Ontario, Canada Friday night in front of a national television audience (Showtime) at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, NY.
Nicholson got off to a good start early in the bout as he caught Rolls with a right hand. However, Rolls countered with a right-left combination that dropped Nicholson to the canvas late in the first round. Washington, DC super lightweight Lamont White tipped the scales at 137.5 pounds for his four-round contest against Tomas Romain that will take place on Saturday, June 10th at the Claridge Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Romain weighed in at 133.5 pounds.
White (1-7, one KO) will try to build momentum after earning his first pro victory -- a second-round knockout over previously undefeated Roger Belch on May 13th in Norfolk, VA. Romain (2-1) is coming off a four-round unanimous decision win over Sidell Blocker on March 11th at the Claridge.

Nicholson Hits Scales In New York!

Demond Nicholson (right) weighed in at 162.5 pounds for his eight-round nationally-televised bout against Steve Rolls at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY. Rolls hit the scales at 161 pounds.
The bout will be shown as part of the Shobox telecast on Showtime that will begin at 10:30 PM ET.

Nicholson Makes ShoBox Appearance Friday in New York!
Laurel, MD super middleweight Demond "D'Best At It" Nicholson returns to action in an eight-round encounter against undefeated Steve Rolls of Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Friday, June 9th at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, NY. The bout will be a part of a ShoBox telecast on Showtime.
Nicholson (17-1-1, 16 KO's) is coming off an eight-round majority decision draw with Immanuwel Aleem on July 29th in Quebec, Canada. Rolls (15-0, nine KO's) last fought on December 16th and won by third-round TKO over Attila Koros also in Quebec. Rolls is a former NABF Super Welterweight champion.

South Atlantic Sends Eight To Junior Olympic Nationals!
A couple of weeks ago, we listed the boxers from the Potomac Valley Association of USA Boxing that will be heading to the Junior Olympic Youth Open and Prep National Championships in Charleston, WVA June 26th through July 1st.
The South Atlantic Association of USA Boxing will send eight boxers to the nationals based on competition held in Salisbury, MD on May 20th: Here are their representatives:

Beltway Boxers Successful At Rosecroft!
Beltway Boxers prospects put in some quality work as they won bouts during the Kings Promotions card Saturday at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.

In the main event, undefeated Forestville, MD super lightweight Mykal "The Professor" Fox won an eight-round unanimous decision over "The Hudson Valley Kid" Daniel Sostre of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. The 6'4" Fox worked everything off of his long jab that kept Sostre off balance throughout the entire contest. Sostre provided very little offense to counter Fox's assault. Fox won the bout by scores of 80-71 and 79-72 (twice) to raise his record to 14-0, four KO's. Sostre's record is now even at 13-13-1, five KO's.
The co-feature saw another Forestville, MD prospect Tyrek "I Get Busy" Irby win a six-round unanimous decision over Brandon "Bam" Sanudo of Baja California, Mexico. Irby battered Sanudo over the entire six rounds. So dominant was Irby's performance that one judge, John Gradowski, scored two 10-8 rounds for Irby despite the fact that there were no knockdowns in the contest. Gradowski scored the contest 60-52. Judges Brent Bovell and David Braslow saw the bout, 60-54. Irby is now 3-0, one KO while Sanudo drops to 5-5, two KO's.
Bowie, MD super lightweight Greg "The Sharpshooter" Outlaw, Jr. scored a fourth-round TKO over Mario Perez of Baja California, Mexico. After starting off as a southpaw in the first round of the contest, Outlaw switched to conventional in the second round and picked up his offensive pace, dropping Perez with a right hand. Outlaw would knock down Perez three more times in the contest before the bout was stopped at 1:32 of the fourth round. Outlaw, who recently graduated from Bowie State University, remains undefeated at 3-0, one KO. Perez falls to 1-2.
Super welterweight "Slick" Justin Hurd of Accokeek, MD stopped Alberto Delgado of Roanoke, VA in the third round. Hurd, the younger brother of IBF Super Welterweight champion Jarrett Hurd was dominant in his performance, battering Delgado throughout the contest and eventually forcing the Delgado corner to call a halt to the contest at 1:23 of the third. Hurd is now 3-0, two KO's while Delgado is 0-2-1.
Super featherweight Malik "Lil Leak" Loften of Suitland, MD made an impressive pro debut, scoring a fourth round TKO over Jemour Edwards of Orlando, FL. Edwards came out very aggressive and tried to pressure Loften in the first round. Loften, however, handled the pressure very well and started to land quality head and body shots of his own that, by the fourth round, overwhelmed Edwards and forced referee Brent Bovell to stop the contest at 2:41. Edwards falls to 0-2.

Maryland Commission Issues Statement On Lawson Issue!
The Maryland State Athletic Commission has issued the following statement concerning the events of May 20th at the MGM National Harbor Casino in Oxon Hill, MD:
“Based on an initial investigation of events that took place on May 20, 2017 during a professional boxing show held at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, licensed second (cornerman) Leon Lawson, II was summarily suspended by the Maryland State Athletic Commission as of May 23, 2017 for exhibiting unruly conduct in violation of Commission regulations. Such action is pursuant to Maryland State law authorizing the summary suspension of a licensee where the Commission finds that the public health, safety and welfare imperatively requires emergency action.
The action was taken as a result of Mr. Lawson punching professional boxer Jose Uzcategui in the face following the conclusion of the boxing contest between Mr. Uzcategui and Andre Dirrell. The Maryland State Athletic Commission’s suspension of Mr. Lawson was issued on an indefinite basis. The Commission is continuing its investigation and takes this matter very seriously.”
According to ESPN.com's, Dan Rafael, Lawson has plans to turn himself in to Prince George's County police on Friday. Lawson's counsel says that his client has not been on the run, that he has been in Flint, MI discussing this case.
