This was the 23rd edition of this charity event but the first without its founder, Joseph E. Robert, Jr., who passed away on December 7. Raul Fernandez of the Fernandez Foundation served as chairman this year with Joseph E. Robert, III acting as honorary chair.
MC Hammer gave a live performance of some of his great hits including "Too Legit to Quit." Hammer performed "U Can't Touch This" with the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders.
During the live auction, the main prize was a Washington Nationals package that included two 2013 season tickets where the seats are in a luxury box, a trip to spring training, two chats with Nats General Manager Mike Rizzo, participation in a pre-game batting practice session and a chopper motorcycle with the Nats logo and autographed by the starting lineup. The winning bid was $100,000.
Former world champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini was inducted into the Fight Night Hall of Fame. Copies of his new autobiography, "The Good Son" were given to each attendee as the major prize in each goodie bag.
Among the many luminaries in the crowd were the last three DC Mayors -- Anthony Williams, Adrian Fenty and current mayor Vincent Gray -- along with At-Large councilmember Michael Brown (a former member of the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission), and Ward 2 councilmember Jack Evans. Also spotted were DC School Superintendent Kaya Henderson and former University of Maryland basketball legend, Olympic gold medalist, NBA player and US Representative in Congress, Tom McMillen.
Next year's Fight Night is slated to be held on November 14. The chairman will be Kevin Plank, the CEO of Under Armour, who will be the main sponsor of the event.
