Potomac Valley and USA Boxing Announces 'Gloves Not Guns" Program!

This week, the Potomac Valley Association -- the representative body of amateur boxing in DC and Prince George's and Montgomery County -- in association with USA Boxing and the United States Olympic Committee, is starting a program this week called "Gloves Not Guns."

The objective of the Gloves Not Guns program is to attract and involve more young people in the sport of amateur boxing and provide positive choices for youth which will then have a positive effect on the community.

“We are delighted about this program coming to our area," said Jerry Jerome, President of Potomac Valley Association in a press release. "The disciplines associated with Olympic-style boxing will encourage our youth to have a more fit and healthy lifestyle as well as utilizing better choices in regards to conflicts.

Here's how the program will work. Four local boxing clubs with certified coaches will host various clinics to introduce amateur boxing elements and exercises to new members FREE of charge. The focus will be on exercise and conditioning elements associated with the sport to improve your level of fitness. Participants will learn about boxing, conditioning, and training from certified instructors and supervised sparring matches.

This will be a seven-week program that will be open to all ages which includes a FREE USA Boxing, Inc. membership good for 2009 ( normally valued at $40). There will be a graduation ceremony at the completion of the program as well as a boxing competition hosted by Peak Performance Association in July.

Here are the four locations of the participating boxing clubs:

Please. I have been to Old School a few times and not been jumped. Problem is..."safe" neighborhoods aren't too keen on boxing. I tried to get it started in my area and the Mayor said maybe over in the most crime ridden section.

Safe neighborhoods? Give me a break. All gyms that I've been to in the country are in the same type of urban areas in order to be easily accessible to the average boxer - who, drumroll please - lives in an urban area. Duh.

If you want nice neighborhoods, go learn ballet.
