Rivera Falls By Split Decision; Robles, Sigmon Win in Staunton, VA!

No details on these results, but Charlottsville, VA middleweight George "War Time" Rivera lost a six-round split decision to "Mean" Rodney Green of Wilson, NC last night on the Major League Boxing card at the Staunton Armory in Staunton, VA. Rivera's record is 9-4, three KO's while Green is 7-5-1, two KO's.

Two other Virginia boxers fared better on this card. Waynesboro, VA cruiserweight "El Guero" Juan Carlos Robles won a six-round unanimous decision over Ed "The Iron Man" Gutierrez of Oakland, CA. Robles is now 11-2, five KO's and Gutierrez is 15-7-1, six KO's and has lost seven straight.

Also, Bedford, VA light heavyweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon continued his winning ways with a unanimous decision victory over Alex Dill of Virginia Beach, VA in Sigmon's first six-round contest. Sigmon is now 4-1, one KO while Dill is 5-6, two KO's.

The only knockout on this card came in the women's bout where Thaddine "Swift Eagle" Johnson of New York City needed just 55 seconds to stop the debuting Amie Iawasaki.

George is a D level fighter who will never be able to win outside of Joe Hensleys picked wins. Who has he beat?

I think Rivera's victory over Jessie Nicklow, who was 19-0-1 at the time, was a significant win.

People who saw the bout told me that Rivera was very lethargic throughout the contest, he did rock Green a couple of times but didn't throw enough punches.

you meant to tll me the 'war time' was not at the war? didnt fight back? what happened?

George should hang it up. If he cant beat the Rodney Greens hes not going anywhere anytime soon.

Rivera is a talented and strong fighter. Honestly, my feel on the matter is that he needs a new team and trainers. In boxing, your boxing trainer can be just as important as your body that you have developed into a fighting machine. Without a great trainer, you are going to be unable to succeed in boxing with a lot of self educating along the way. Trainers are meant to be there for you, motivate you, help you enter into fights, and make sure that you are training properly in order to ensure that you have a chance during these fights. Trainers make as much difference to boxers as coaches do to football teams. People never look for them, but they are always there, right on the periphery, managing the boxer. Their influence can make or break a career. A good boxing trainer is one that has the boxer's best interest in mind and also wants to help them achieve their goals and objectives. A trainer should always look for ways to get their boxer in the best possible condition at all times.

There should be a good flow of communication. The trainer should sit down with the boxer and try to establish the boxers goals. Is the goal to just get in shape and get as many fights as possible? Or is the goal to become the champion of the world? It does not matter what does matter is that both are in agreement with the goal.

If WARTIME wants to maximize his potential in the ring, he must first make sure he is with the right entourage.

willie would be a good fit for george.

Great fight Juan and Cugo!! We love you!!!!!!!! LA FAMILIA

Joe Malory is a good fit for Rivera.

Absolutely, WAR TIME cann fight! The question is who's his trainer? WAR TIME has the ability to exceed, he is fast, strong, talented but he lacks the proper training and boxing techniques, diet and conditioning needed in order to continue to enhance his skills. I was watching a tape when he first started and he was a differnt fighter, he was fast, aggresive and confident. He needs to step his game up and get back into who he was and start kicking ass. War Time if trained good and if his body is conditioned with his strength and power he will be a beast in the ring!

Anonymous said...

Sure your right! Look at the last round when Nicklow pissed him off. lol

Anonymous said...

Rivera your record is not looking tooo good. Sit out a few and get it together. Get trained properly and do a come back. You a a better fighter than what you been giving the fans lately. We want to see the real WAR TIME.

Anonymous said...

George get the ghetto back in your heart and start busting heads. It's in you bring the beast out. NO MORE MR. NICE GUY!!!

Wow! Willie/George would be very interesting mix with some possible greatness. Nothing against Bruce. Does a marvelous job, but would be great to see what magic Willie and George could do...

Sometimes a shakeup may be a wake up! What's to lose?

Maybe the young lion needs a new/additional handler.

willie taylor was a sorry fighter himself. he got lucky with jargal.what could willie teach that he could not teach himself linda?

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

You sound like someone in the know and if so you already know the answer.

Although Bayan has some crazy mad skills his luck was having J.D/Willie Taylor Team develop and hone that diamond. I have watched Willie for nearly 3 years now and I see him doing solid work with his fighters. I think he doesn't get the props he deserves. Then again he is one of the humblest players in the boxing scene I have come across. Just think it would be interesting to see how George would do with him.

please linda love your work and i no your georges biggest fan but give it up

Did I hit a nerve?

Yeah guess it is a pleasure for you who must know so much more, but doesn't have the balls to sign your name...

Laugh on spineless armchairer. Who cares what you know if you don't have the grit to put your expertise on the line with your name.
Perhaps it could help. Or are you content to just taunt? That's all you got?

Anonymous said...

I would put my name..but what for?your seem to know so much...your have all the answers. but remember (its not the dog in the fight but the fight in the dog.)

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

Everyone knows my expertise is limited.

I hear you about the dog...but that dog has shown some AWESOME teeth in some fights.

I am a fan of that dog as long as he wants to fight.

That's where I stand.

You can tippy-toe and skirt the issue and throw excuses of why you can't weigh in and honor George and boxing with your name smartypants.

Anonymous said...

na man Willie is not a good trainer and he is a racist. trust me.

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

Does he discriminate against anonymous posters slinging questionable accusations? If so where do I sign up.

Anonymous said...

I am a fighter so i dont want to put my name down. So you can say what you want. What I said is true. And he will drop out of his fighters life for the smallest thing. I know Willie for a mad long time. I stand by what I said.

Linda, there are some people that remain anonymouse just so they can talk trash and are scared of people knowing who they are (they are punks), but I know alot of my fellow fighters that comment regulary on this blog that want to view their opinions but remain anonymouse so they dont get screwed somewhere down the line....this is a dirty sport, but it pays the bills.

Anonymous said...

to speak to a lady like that you must be one of those boxers to be drop by me,i have never drop a fighter, the last two pros that i had before the ones i have now left on there own. jose almanzer was 6-1-1 before he left with coach tops.deon after a lose he went with suggs but came back.everybody can say what they want but i am having fun, enjoying life god but in front of me.ok you can think what you like of me, that fine i live for god not you. that a shame you dont have respect for a lady.

I don't have a problem with anon posters, and appreciate how important the cloak of anonymity can be. Most anon post are courteous and thought provoking.

But too often I see it used to slander and throw accusations and decimate someone's character without backing it up with facts. You can be anonymous and get your info and point across without being ugly about it.

There is a difference between throwing a knife in the dark at someone's back and sharing/broadcasting information or airing a grievance. It's all about the integrity of the poster. That shines through and reflects on you cloaked or not.

A young girl recently committed suicide because of malicious blogging done by a mother of one of her classmates. Bullying is bullying whether you do it behind your keyboard or with your fist's

It's a privilege for all of us to have this amazing boxing blog and it should be treated with respect and a least a modicum of maturity.

Damn Linda! In reading your post I find myself looking for my dictionary! I'm reminded of a Howard Cosell interview with Muhammad Ali back in the day:

Cosell: "Champ, you're being truculent"

Ali: "Well if truculent is good, then I'm that!"

But seriously Linda, talking about a boxer leaving a trainer for another trainer is a very taboo subject. I don't think you realized how off limits something like that is within the inner circle of boxing. Willie Taylor knows. That's why he immediately said he doesn't want to take anyone's fighter. I know all parties involved here, and you know me, however I will remain anonymous with this post. I know that you meant no offense by saying that perhaps Willie and George would do well together. And I'm sure that no real offense was taken by the other side. However, that's just one of those things that you keep to yourself. Take it from someone who really knows and who has made his fair share of mistakes in the boxing business. But, you have to learn from those mistakes if you want to survive. I suggest you just chalk it up as a valuable lesson learned and move on.

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

I hear ya. I understand that. No offense meant to anyone. I was thinking more along the lines of collaboration, not leaving. You are right though...can see how those are dangerous waters to bridge. Apologize if I was out of line, esp to Bruce and George.

Anonymous said...

There you go Linda. We love you. Now time to move on!

Every boxing trainer has their own way to teaching. Some use current knowledge to prepare a fighter, while others try to find something new to show. There are some aspects that never change, such as hitting the pads, running, defensive maneuvers, and offensive strategies.

I will not use any specific names in this blog, because I am writing this just to explain what I think, as well as ask you, the readers, for an opinion. The following pertains mostly to upper-status cases.

First of all, let’s look at what attributes a trainer should have. I think that the main thing fighter need to see in their trainer is trust. If a fighter ends up picking a trainer based on the trainer’s record, that’s not a guaranteed success.

If you can’t trust your trainer, you are very unlikely to do what he asks of you, especially in the middle of a fight, when things are not going your way. So, in my opinion, trust is by far the most important thing.

This next attribute is closely tired in with the previous one, but I decided to list it separately, because it is not the same thing. Respect is something that the fighter must have for the trainer. This works both ways of course.

Any of these attributes need to go both ways, but since it’s the fighter who is hiring the trainer, it’s the fighter who should enforce them more. Respecting a trainer will make it much easier to hang on to his game plan. A trainer can be abusive at times, verbally and physically, but sometimes it’s his determination that causes such behavior.

Understanding the fighter and their abilities is next on my list. There will always be hard times, family emergencies, stress, illness and fear, which will prevent a fighter from doing their best.

Even though sometimes fighter look like they have inhuman abilities, it’s never true, they are all human and share common emotions and needs. A trainer should be able to understand the boxers, and find a way to prevent any conflicts during training, because a conflict can cause a break in the above mentioned attributes, causing the result of the fight to be unfavorable.

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

Obviously, I don't know firsthand, but you asked for feedback so...as I always do....going out on that limb.

That's a touchy one like a lot of this thread.

Sounds like your position is that the boxer's trust outweigh's not only the trainer's expertise, but also the boxers perhaps questionable ability to cope/rise above his circumstances to tap and allow the talent and skills of the trainer to hone the diamond in him.

Sure there has to be a degree of nurturing, but the boxers that are at the echelon you are speaking of, either had that kind of nurturing/trainer early on, or learned to master that part and let the trainer handle the boxing side.

Just an observation from outside the inside.

Talk about a Zen Koan.

George is a wonderful fighter. So, maybe he was a little off that night.
He is human and maybe he had things on his mind. Someone has to win and someone has to lose. It just wasn't his night
