Nicklow-Rivera Rematch Set for November 1 in Fairfax, VA!

After weeks of negotiations, the rematch between Baltimore, MD middleweight Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow and Charlottsville, VA's George "Wartime" Rivera has been signed!

The bout will take place as an eight-round co-feature on the ICE Promotions (headed by Jackie Kallen) card on Saturday, November 1 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.

Nicklow won a controversial eight-round unanimous decision over Rivera in the first bout on September 5 at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore. The victory came despite Rivera knocking down Nicklow twice in the final round.

This bout joins a card that is shaping up to be a good one with the return of Jimmy Lange and another rematch between Jaime Palma and Dean White.

ACW: NIcklow Dominated the whole fight, other then the last round where all hell broke loose. If the last round never happened then this would never call for a rematch. Should be a better rematch though.

The rematch has been signed, a little too soon I believe. I'm beginning to believe that the fighters from VA forget how to slowly climb the ranks and pad their record so to speak. Wartime has excellent potential. A good fighter, with one hell of a loyal following, but is currently carrying an 8-3 professional record. If he loses this fight, the record will fall to 8-4, which ultimately means he would be carrying a 50% loss to win record, which will never evolve him past journeyman status, if he were to keep that pace. A knockout is knockout, and I believe like everyone else that he did win that last fight. The referee and comission has taken a verbal beating for allowing this happen. I can tell you that the decision will not be overturned, it is what it is. What I can tell you is that three jusdges saw the fight 77-72, 75-73, and 75-73 allfor Nicklow, even with the point deduction back, wartime still loses by unanimous decision. Wartime should of fought the whole fight like he fought the last round, that way this would not be questioned. He was pissed of when he got hit from behind, and took it to the "street" so to speak, and dominated Nicklow from that point on. Nicklow, as unpopular as he is and the verbal beating he has taken is still carrying a 18-0 record, although we all know it should be 17-1, which is still a respectable record. I fear this fight was signed too soon, I wish George would go and take about 6 "easy" fights then possibly go and re address the issue. I also fear that this fight is being thrown on a card to help sell tickets to a fight that I'm quite sure would not nearly be at sellout capacity. There has been some trouble selling out the partiot center for boxing and mma. I just thought I would add by two cents worth, I will definitely be at the fight, and will definitely be rooting for wartime

Isn't this the place where everyone talks about the quality of fights and now you complain about George taking a real fight. Shows the quality of the young man where he wants to show everyone he won the last time. One thing you can be sure of the true winner will be getting his hand raised.

Jessie is a good fighter. He actually works the body. But as with most of the Baltimore Boxing guys, his jab is an afterthought.

To progress from local attraction to prospect to contender, he needs a new trainer and a jab.

Of course this bout was put on a card to help attendance. That is one of the jobs of a promoter.

I can tell you that a number of promoters in the area wanted this rematch, based in part on the controversy itself and the comments that followed.

I am plesantly surprised that Nicklow and Rivera decided to do the rematch. I agree there is a risk to it, especially on the Nicklow side. Nicklow got the victory in the first bout, as controversial as it was. He truly didn't need to do this again, especially so soon.

NIcklow did not Dominate the whole fight. He fought dirty and the tables turned when he hit WARTIME below the belt. He tired again with the sucker punch in the later round. George is a clean and honest fighter. He doesn't need to fight dirty to win his fights!! The entire fight was a set up including the ref..WARTIME continue it with heart and soul..bring out the dog in you baby!! Do you and an eye for an eye.

I am surprised you said that! I had grown bored of Jessie's "predictable outcome" fights in Baltimore.

I am very proud of Jessie for coming out of the Baltimore comfort zone. Jessie has a lot more fights under his belt than George and to George's credit he has fought out of state a lot more. Win or lose it will be good for Jessie because of exposure.


It was good to see so many fighters from Virginia last night at Better Promotions. They all did quite well, and it really is great for the BATB fans to finally start seeing some solid crossovers! It seems to me there is less smack talk between VA/MD now that they are finally taking each other on.

The card is being promoted by ICE Promotions, which is headed by the "First Lady of Boxing" Jackie Kallen.

I have not heard that Jargal is going to be on the card..yet. Last I heard, Jargal is slated to be on the Fight Night card on November 6 in DC. But that could change.

The reason why I'm surprised is that Nicklow didn't need the bout because he got the win, as controversial as it was. He could have waited for a better time with more on the line.

Believe me, speaking strictly as a fan, I'm glad the bout is taking place and as someone else has said, the rematch should be a lot better than the first bout.

I know . Weird as it is I wasn't much of a Jessie fan until his bout with one of my #1's. Then for some odd reason he actually registered for the first time on my "hey, I like this fighter" register. Believe me I never expected that.

No one said he needed it. He could have paddled on calm, untested waters until the cows came home, and eek by entrenched in being another stable warm body filler/ticket seller. Maybe he hears the call of the wild that he is more than that.

Just like I don't believe anymore that it's only about the "$$ shot", I don't believe it's only about having a zillion to 0 record. A million #'s on a record will never compare to one moment of heart. I know that sounds idealistic, but that's how I feel. Not into records or stats.

I was at the fight. What happen to the low blow and the sucker punch?

What,I do see is the ref stopping and altering the fight and saving Jessie from further damage from Rivera!!

The second time Jessie was knocked down the ref waived the fight. At that point the fight should of been over.

This video only highlights Jessie. Rivera won 1,2, 7, and 8. Nicklow won 3, 4, 5 and 6.

I can't wait to see them fight Nov. 1st.

the ref aint waive teh damn fight man Jessie fell and the ropes stopped him from goin down so that is a knockdown and that is why teh ref jumped in.

What fight did you watch? George won rounds 1 and 8.

It also didnt show George holding every chance he could round 2-7. And the "Low blow" wasnt low man it was on the money.

I don't know, and my anatomy is different, but I would think unless you are on the receiving end of that punch you don't know how on the money it is.

If you ( the expert) saw how on the money the shot was and think the ref was peaches-n-cream spot on and you know boxing then I think you are absolutely LAME, and that really makes me not get the boxing experts who have boxed.

I spoke to Jessie friday, he is seriously thinking about pulling out of this one. He does not want to fight outside of Baltimore.
I personally think George knocks him out in the second round.

DuBurn's people knew who Jessie was before September 5. Rivera brought him to the lime light and gave him exposure outside of the DuBurn Arena in Baltimore. This fight definitely boosted and exposed the knowlodge TO THE PEOPLE of how corrupt Jake and his camp is. Also, the fact that some of Jessie's fight were given to him. He record is not a true reflection of his winnings and ability.

The rematch is boxing’s gift to its fans. There are few sports in which a public mandate can help inspire a sporting event. In boxing, one good fight often calls for another. We are looking forward to the return fight between WARTIME and NICKLOW on Novemebr 1st.

Boxing is the only sport in which “rematch clause” is an accepted part of the lingo.

First off, two guys are in the ring fighting. They put eachother "on the map". That said, Jessie is the one with the big (admittedly a little inflated) record. HE is the one with everything to lose, not Wartime, by taking this rematch. I understand you're a huge local boxing fan & are only speaking your mind but to say that anyone other than local fans give a shit about the first fight, is just incorrect. "On the map"? Jessie could take his record of 19-0 anywhere & make a ton of money. George can not. I'm pulling for George, not Jessie in the rematch because I like to see the right guy win fights & he should have won the 1st fight. That said, George certainly did not put Jessie on the map. Even though Jessie has an 19-0 record (inflated) he is still local. If that is the case why hasn't Jessie gone on the road to make a ton of money? Why hasn't his team exposed him elsewhere other than the DuBurn Arena in Baltimore? That is what the boxing game is all about!!

His fight with Rivera exposed the bullshit and curruption of Jessie, the ref, The Snake team and staff in that arena.

Now it's time for Jessie and his camp to "STEP THEIR GAME UP" and fight out of his local surroundings! Now that is EXPOSURE and putting Jessie on the map!!

I don't know where the rumor got started, but I have talked to Rivera's people and there is NO TRUTH to the rumor that Freddie Roach is working with Rivera.

Nicklow was known throughout the area other than DuBurns. Nicklow had a solid amateur career and turned pro at the age of 19.

Your prediction may be right. Nicklow, does have a lot to lose, Rivera, has a lot to gain.

The fans won't be surprised if Nicklow bailes out this fight. He has never fought out of Baltimore.

The fact is Jessie can call out Kirkland, Rivera cant.

Jessie can and will make mad money taking a fight on a showtime or HBO to fight a big name, regardless what any of you think, he is 19-0 and that says enough for him to fight any1. Shoot there may be a champ out there that will take a chance defending his title against Jessie because of the lack of experience against top fighters.

George on the other hand would have to win his next 15 fights at least to get on that level.

There are a few people in Virginia who really know the tactics used in boxing promotions and this Rivera VS Nicklow on Nov 1 is one of the tricks.Rivera now knows he can beat a good fighter after opening up on Nicklow in the last round,all you have to do is stir up that tiger thats pinned up in George and he will give alot of these fighters that call themselves
top notch ,a beatdown.
But I agree this fight won't happenon Nov 1.

I agree if the boxing rules were in place Kenny th ref would been suspended for altering and interfering with WAR TIME fighting his fight. He used illegal tacta in the ring to assist Nicklow.

Jessie was the one who had his temper tantram. He really felt threatened and fought dirty to gain control of the fight.

WAR TIME has earned his respect from the fans and other fellow boxers.

The so called "Low Blow" looked on the money on the video, but Jessie was warned, and you dont get disqualified for 1 low blow (watch galata-bowe). And the punch beging the 8th round WAS legal. The bell rang Jessie went to his corner then came out. George should have been ready. Shit happens. BUT it was not against the rules.

What is this about me cutting and pasting the fight to make Nicklow look better? I showed the entire 8th round. What I didnt show was Nicklow dominating Rivera in rounds 2-7. Rivera fought in spots (one spot by my count) and lost on the cards. Nicklow got up both times

No one else had any video of the fight to back up their arguments, i posted what I had.

YouTube only allows ten minutes per video, so i posted what i felt were the highlihts. i did not record the entire match, i was there to enjoy myself like everybody else.

I feel Jesse deserves more respect. You all are putting too much emphasis on what Rivera could have done. The fact is Rivera had 8 rounds to knock him out, but didn't. That being said, I am looking forward to see what happens in the rematch. It will be one hell of a fight

Nicklow ain't even ranked in the top 100 in boxrec. And he'll make tons of money fighting a big name on HBO or SHO? You must live in a trailer park to think that that is "big money".

He just got knocked out by an 8-3 guy. How does that qualify him for a big money fight? He'd be lucky to get on ESPN with that padded record and he'd probably have to fight his first tough, legit fight outside the comfort of B'more.

No... this rematch against Rivera is perfect for him. He's in semi-hostile territory against a guy he knows he outboxed for seven rounds. A good win here might get him an ESPN date for which he'll be far better prepared.

You must of been at another fight!! Jessie lost 1, 2, and was losing 3rd until he hit Rivera with a low blow. That is the only way he felt he can even have a chance. It took Rivera a few rounds to get it back but when he did in the 7th Jessie again played dirty and hit Rivera after the ref ordered them to go back to their corner. After, that it took Kenny the ref to save his ass and extend the count, along with the ref pushing Rivera away from Jessie. So you stop defending your boy because all he did was fight a bullshit dirty fight and he had his fucking babysitter in the ring with him!!

The real video is going up!! With Jake in action making gesters, whistling and puting his finger up saying "GIVE IT ONE MINUTE" to the ref!!

I disagree, Round 1 is the only round I would have considered giving to Rivera. If he was so in control of the action, what was he doing holding? Wouldn't he be throwing those knockout punches of his?

The majoirty of the fight was fought on the inside, with Nicklow forcing the acion. Rivera looked uncomfortable until he got his mojo back in that 8th round.

That is why the rematch is so intriguing. I want to see what happens when both fighters are confident and loose.

No need for hostility people, this is going to be an exciting fight. Only boring fights need that crap

I said he won the 1st and the 8th. The 8th I would have scored 10-7 for Rivera

You have to realize Nicklow is shorter than Rivera. Therefore he is close to Rivera's nuts when thw two are engaged. Nicklow is an avid body puncher that utilizes uppercuts and hooks to the body. Low blows may happen, and it's not like the ref ignored it, he gave Rivera time to recover.

If you were hitting me in my nuts, I would use my jab to create distance. Rivera needs to fight back in there, he is a boxer. I am sure he was wearing a protective cup. I wouldn't call Nicklow a dirty fighter, is he notrious for hitting below the belt or something? They didn't seem malicious or anything.

And that 3rd round low blow didn't even look all that low in my opinion.

As for the composure comment, that was the problem, Rivera was too composed in there. If someone hit me in the balls I wouldn't just hold onto them, i would go crazy and throw more punches.

Sorry to sound biased here, but you aren't giving my man any respect. If Nicklow is so bad why does Rivera want a rematch?

You know what you all are ashame to admit that your boy had to clearly direct and hit WARTIME in the nuts in order to win the fight and again snuck a bitch punch in the 8th. So suck it up! Your boy got fucked up and if the ref and security wouldn't of saved Jessie, he would of been in a coma. Kenny, pushed and pulled, Rivera off of Jessie. Who gives fucking time out in boxing? It's a 8 count not 60. Why did the ref ask the Doc to stop the fight? The ref was trying everything to save Jessie. That's alight cause the people know who won that night. Even B'more fans dislike Jessie. It's an eye opener for future fighters and Jessie didn't gain anything that night. He lost more than he thinks he has won! What has the fans upset was more how the ref allowed Jessie to get away with shit and if you watch the video he kept pushing WAR TIME back and talking shit to him. WAR TIME should of knocked his ass out!! ALL WAS FAIR THAT NIGHT!

You people just like to argue, I never trashed Rivera in any way. I respect him, and thought he had a good chance to knock Rivera out. Wartime has some serious power, he just needs to be busier if he expects to win close decisions.

All these claims that Jesse is a dirty fighter and that Jesse isn't talented make no sense. He beat Rivera, your opinion has no impact on that fact. Why don't you respect the man for having balls and giving Rivera another chance to beat him?

I am just trying to have a conversation about a great upcoming fight. These two have heart, and i think the rematch will be 8 rounds of pure action. It's gonna come down to who wants it more; who trains harder, who lands the bigger punches, who has the better chin. This is what makes boxing great.

George's fans post their names regardless how they come across clean or not. They are proud to speak up for George and defend him at all cost. Unless you were Rivera you can not speak for that man's pain. A cup can only protect but so much. The pressure was still there and inpact. Nicklow went full force directly on to Rivera's grion on purpose.

I can't answer how badly George was hurt by the lows, because I didn't talk to him first hand about it. I will say I don't recall him ever having a problem with them before. So I tend to trust what I saw. I do agree with you to a degree about "he just needs to be busier if he expects to win close decisions. I told him that before the fight.

From my vantage point I saw the odds were blatantly manipulated and stacked against him until the eighth when he was hit in such a way the awoke and truly unleashed the WAR this TIME in Riveria.
I am not the only one who will say it's tough to win in Baltimore.

Ire is up on both sides. Chemistry for great support for a great fight at the Patriot Center.

What do you think Paschall made against Dirrell with his great record like Nicklow's? I'd hazard a guess at around $15k maybe $20k max depending on how good a negotiating team he has.

So, if Nicklow gets lucky enough to find an Olympic boy to get good money against, that's what he might get. Now, if you think that's mad money, then I know you live in a trailer park.

The only fighters makin' money in this game are world champs when they defend their belts or some contender who can hype himself like Edison Miranda. Nobody else is making money. Shobox, HBO-BAD and ESPN2 is mere chump change.

Nicklow ain't gonna make money man... iz u kiddin'? If 8-3 George Rivera knocked him unconscious, what the hell is a 23-0 (20 KO's) James Kirkland gonna do?

Nicklow-Rivera is gonna be an intriguing fight. Hopefully the winner gets a shot at ESPN. But please, don't talk about these guys fighting for world titles and making big bank and so on. They gonna have to catch a seriously lucky break for that to happen.

Man... just watched that eighth round on saltypirate. Nicklow got dropped twice got back up right away. Who the hell said he was laid out for more than minute?

But the ref definitely blew it wasting a lot of time trying to, what it looks like, get Rivera's mouthpiece washed up and fitted. A lot of refs woulda let it go on, but it's hometown cookin', still within the rules though, if that was indeed the case.

Definitely, the winner should get a crack at something bigger.

BoxBible: Pashal got $30K, and a shot a taking out a top ten rank fighter. If he would have won that they next fight would have been $100K.

THe issue with Kenny (ref) taking a whole minute with the mouth piece issue is that Kenny saw the mouth piece on the floor

-asked Rivera if it was his

-he said no so he asked Jessie and Jessie showed him his

-Then he told Rivera to show him his mouthpiece

Thats the rules man, action was stopped because of the knockdown and Rivera HAS to have his mouthpiece in.

Same thing with when Jessie dropped him. Should Kenny have not made Rivera put his mouthpiece in? NO he has his corner wash it out and put it back in, which took over a minute, same thing.

If you watch the video and attended the fight the ref spend most of his time breaking up the fight and pushing Rivera off Nicklow and telling Rivera to go to his corner. Why did security only attack Rivera when Nicklow threw the punch? Yall, all a bunch of jerks and still trying to justify the unfairness that night! The ref should of allowed Rivera to fight his fight bottom line!

The 19-0 record Nicklow has is not accurate and a true reflection of his winnings as a professional boxer . So don't pump him up like he is some great fighter. I have been to a few of his prior fights that the decision should of went the other way. Again, because he is protected and pampered he has been given false wins. His record should show as 8-1 he lost this last match.

I think George Rivera is doing fine right where he is. Aside from questionable matchmaking/management (meaning he's getting thrown in a little over his head this early in his career), his skills are solid and he's in great shape & obviously gets lots of work down in Staunton. However, I see know reason for anyone to have anything bad to say about Joe Mallory. Joe is a stand up guy & a family man, not to mention all around good guy.

Joe Malory, is a talented and skilled trainer. He instills confidence in the boxers. Boxing is not only physical it's mental along with street knowledge. Especially, when their are so many dirty fighters in the sport.

George, started his boxing career out of Malory's gym.

To the individual who made the comment that rivera and nickalow are lucky they have each other because neither will go any where; sounds like an ex-fighter or maybe even someone who is still in the fight game that didn't reach his heights in the boxing game himself and it appears to me he seems a little envious of the attention these two young men are receiving.

I think Nicklow is very brave for taking this fight a 2nd time.I think his ego is blinding his judgement.Early in that fight George was giving Nicklow too much respect for his limited punch power.Once George was pissed he destroyed him, this fight is over.Plus I thought it was pretty funny the guy in the video interviewing Nicklow from his home town did not pronounce his name correctly.Not even Rivera could put that overhyped bum on the map. haha, yea, that was bad. i wasnt paying attetion during the announcements, plus i was a little buzzed. it was my first time seeing local boxing.

after only seeing fights on tv i was blown away by the level of competition in this area. i hear a lot of people saying these fighters wont ever go anywhere,but i disagree. i haven't seen anything in eithr fighter that suggests they cant continue to improve and really hone their craft.

nicklow has a work rate that gives anyone problems, and rivera has power. while rivera doesnt the strongest record, he sure didn't look 8-2 in that 8th round. thats why i love boxing, its a game that can end at any moment

i will be at the nicklow-rivera rematch for sure. i will also try to get a press pass so i can get closer to the ring this time. i would love to see Mark Tucker fight. Anyone who has trained with Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver is worth checking out.

I was at the match where WARTIME took a vicious low blow that appeared intentional; he went down and looked like he wanted to die. When the bout resumed he wasn't the same fighter, clearly had the fight taken out of him.

My question is; Why were the rules regarding low blows , rabbit punches to the back of the head, the foul blow to the back of WARTIME'S head after the fighters were order to their corner so liberal?

Nicklow the boxer who diberately threw the foul blows, should of lost by disqualification.

And to TheSaltyPirate.com, have you ever been in a boxing match and had your testicle shot to the top of your throat by an unexpected low blow? My father was a boxer and he will testify that if the blow was of such force it will incapacitate the offended boxer so the boxer cannot continue to box.

Nicklow, used that technique hitting the testicles and the foul hit to the back of the head as a way of creating an advantage for himself.

You are so right! Nicklow, deserves no credit for the fight when he used illegal tactics to get as far as he did.

The 3rd round was when the fight turned around with the low blow. Rivera had him till the end of the 3rd round.

The judges, the ref and the security were all in Jake's pocket. It's crazy how Nicklow threw the punch and 6 security tackled in on Rivera. It's obvious the fight was fixed.

We have honest commisioners, ref and judges here in Virginia. Now is time to watch the real fight on Nov. 1st.

Did I miss something here? When did Nicklow become Andrew Golota? He threw a low blow, yes, this somtimes happens in fights. Doesn't the ref say before every fight "protect yourself at all times".

Rivera wasn't throwing 100 punches a round. He was leaning in and holding. In my opinion, being busier could have prevented those low blows. When Rivera got his confidence back, he looked like a competely different fighter.

After reading those posts it sounded like Jesse kicked Rivera in the nuts on the way to the areana.

Nicklow has no track record for being a dirty fighter. I hate to sound callous but boxing is a brutal sport, low blows happen. I am not a fan of excuses, no matter what they may be. Nicklow won by decision, lets look ahead to Nov 1st

You protray Jessie to be this honest clean fighter and he is far fetch from that. The fight with War Time isn't the only fight that he has gotten away with his dirty acts in order to gain some form of control. It is not THE FIGHT which EXPOSED the bull shit. There were other fights Jessie was awarded in which he did not deserve to win. THIS MATCH exposed him, the judges and Jake and his camp to THE FANS.

Stop trying to justify that Jessie won fair and sqaure because September 5th was one of the most unfair and unprofessional fights I have seen in 35 years.

Again, the fans are looking forward to Nov 1st. War Time will have a much better shot in Virginia. Jessie will be out of his play ground.

i am advocating both fighers. i am attempting to promote this upcoming rematch. go back and read my posts before you cast me as a pro nicklow guy, i have not once said anything negative about Rivera (other than his holding and lack of action in rounds 1-7). Rivera has power.

I am playing devils advocate here because there is an extreme bias towards Rivera in this comment section. No one is going to win me over Nov 1st, both fighters already have. I have nothing but love for both of these guys.

I admitted that this was the first local fight I attended, we all have to start somewhere. I am not even a reporter, for christs sake, I am wearing a undershirt in a basement.

How do smarmy "you dont know as much as i do" comments like yours help any one? You make Rivera look like a whiner, and Nicklow look like a dirty fighter. Neither are true based on the first fight.

Stop denying the fact Rivera lost rounds 2-7, thus making it impossible to win a decision. He woke up in the 8th and did some serious damage, and that is what made this rematch possible. Both fighters tasted the canvas, both got up and fought to the finish. No anonymous internet comments can change those facts.

I have watched both of these fighters close hand- many fights. I am biased. I love George. I am weak, because I am hoping I can fall for Jessie too.

I am sure that fight was really a line in the sand for both, but more for Jessie to show his ability and HIS character and integrity. I believe that he has that, even if he has to work extra hard to fall from the tree.
