On May 29 and 30, two Beltway prospects will take significant bouts to further their careers.
As announced this morning on the "Ballroom Boxing Report" on WJFK-AM in Baltimore, undefeated Pasadena, MD super middleweight "The Persecutor" Mike Paschall will battle former world title contender Larry "The Laser" Marks of Newark, DE on Thursday, May 29 in the main event of the next Ballroom Boxing card at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.
Paschall (16-0-1, four KO's) is coming off a solid fourth-round TKO over Bruce Rumbolz on the last Ballroom Boxing show on April 3. Paschall has scored knockouts in his last two bouts. Marks (29-9-1, 16 KO's) who unsuccessfully challenged Andrew "Six Heads" Lewis for the WBA Welterweight title in 2001, is the most accomplished boxer Paschall has faced. Marks has also fought the likes of former world champions Cory Spinks and Charles "The Natural" Murray as well as contenders Andrew Murray and Tokunbo Olajide. Marks also holds victories over Beltway Boxers Ed Griffin and Purcell Miller.
There is a possibility that this will be a 10-round contest. If that holds up, that will be virgin territory for Paschall.
The very next night, Friday, May 30, Charlottesville, VA junior middleweight George "War Time" Rivera makes his national television debut as he battles undefeated Philadelphia prospect Latif Mundy in Monroeville, PA. The scheduled eight-round bout will be shown as a co-feature on the Spanish network Telefutura.
Rivera (8-1, three KO's) is coming off an impressive four-round unanimous decision over Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor on March 15 in Allentown, PA. Mundy (7-0, two KO's) has not fought since November 11 when he won a six-round unanimous decision over Maurice Williams in Philadelphia. This will be the first scheduled eight-rounder for both men.
Hopefully by the end of the weekend, I'll have official confirmation of another Beltway Boxer that will take a significant step in competition in the very near future.

two tough fights. one guy is stepping up way earlier than the other guy. what does that tell you?
I don't know? What does that tell you? Does it tell you that you speak in riddles? Or that you have no clue? Or that you are related to one of the fighters?
It tells me that Paschall has been a pro since late 2004 while Rivera has only been a pro for a little more than a year.
This makes both steps justified.
I've seen both guys and I think both are very talented. Paschall is a very good boxer who is slick and quick. He's fighting a guy in Marks who can be world class when he wants to be. If Marks is in top shape, and that's a big if, then Marks has a good chance of beating Paschall. But Paschall can go and may have enough to beat a Marks that in tip top shape. That should be a great fight.
Rivera is a well rounded boxer as well. Monday is all business and an active busy fighter. This one should be close as well. I'll be in B-more for the fight with Paschall and I've got Telefutura but I don't know what they are saying!
Great fights for both guys, let's hope they are both successful!
They both fought Dafir Smith and I just looked them up and they both had draws with Smith. I wouldn't be surprised if Paschall and Marks fight to a draw. Im sure it will go the distance a be a close fight.
Rivera and Monday is a hard fight for both guys early in their careers. But its on TV and you usually have to take cnaces when that exposure and money is on the line.
I realy wish some of these armchair prognosticators would sign their names. It would certainly be refreshing.
lets give credit to Paschall and importantly his trainer, Danny Kisner, who are ready and willing to step up here and go with Larry Marks. Marks has fought three times in Maryland over the years beating Ron Boddie and Elias Cruz recently and losing a very close decision to then 20-0 Michael Covington. He has fought quite a few guys who qualify as world class competition and the only one that looks like he really handled him was Tokumbo Olajide in 2004. I made that fight and it was stopped after a typical Olajide lightning fast flurry in the second round and it never, ever should have been stopped.
So it should be a great fight and a real test for Paschall, and I hope that everyone who writes an anonymous post here will come out and cheer him on.
Paschall is FINALLY stepping up to his first ten rounder (maybe) after four years! I heard he's had a couple of grandchildren since turning pro...

Well they were also voting over and over for many of the other people as well. I think The Greek was second. He's a middleweight. Bet ya he would NEVER fight Rivera. And Rivera is a smaller fighter at jr. middle and they would never fight Rivera.
Yeah it was a couple doing that, them 2 and Wilson was 2, everybody was, but Digital picked someone else anyway. That Greek is a super-middleweight, that would be interesting though, fin-ness vrs power. How bout Maybe a showdown between all middleweights in the area. A whole card of Beltway Middleweights fighting each other, from representative areas in the beltway like a VA-vrs-MD or DC, like a Wartime-Greek like you said and so on and so on. Im sure some1 can make that happen.
WOW thats awesome news. Pashcall-Marks should be a awesome fight of the year candidate. I remember seeing Marks fight on the Jimmy Lange Card on like October 06.

I may have missed a few Maryland guys and of course there are guys like Fernando Guerrero and Seth Mitchell that are signed with bigger promoters who are on the national circuit. And guys like Tony Thompson and Darnell Wilson who are about to embark on the big time. Those companies wouldn't risk their prospects for a "local show". Heck, the local promoters probably wouldn't risk their prospects on a local show!

It looks like the Maryland boxers have an edge on their Virginia cousins in that they have more prospects who are further in their careers than their VA counterparts. That is due in large part to the two very active promoters in Maryland whereas in VA there is really no one that is putting on a monthly or even bi-monthly series. I would give the edge in talent to the Virginians, I would give the edge in experience to the Maryland fighters.
Would a card like this happen? Probably not, there is too much risk and too small of a reward. The promoter or promoters of the show would have to make a huge payday to even consider it. And there aren't any real paydays like that in boxing if TV isn't involved.
We can dream though, right? It's fun!
And if we could, this is what I would pay a lot of money to see! (There are some Maryland guys fighting Maryland guys and Virgina guys fighting Virginia guys but the matchups make a little more sense that way.)

whatever happened to Jimmy Lang? Did he go to jail or something? Get busted by the FBI for steroid use? He just completely disappeared. I think that the only time I saw his face was on a milk carton.
First of all, great thoughts about the "Beltway Boxing Classic." I like the ideas of the dream matchups. Keep those coming.
As far as Jimmy Lange is concerned, a combination of physical problems and some personal issues (of which I will not get into) have kept him out of the ring. I've been told he will be back by the end of this year, probably sometime in the winter.
Looking at the dream matchup list again, one of those bouts has already taken place. Jaime Palma won an eight-round unanimous decision over Dean White last September in Springfield.
Another one will take place on May 3 when Thomas Snow battles Tyrell Samuel.
Personally, I'd LOVE to see Buchanan vs. Grant. Talk about a slobberknocker!
Hope whatever the personal problems are with Lange that it's nothing too serious...

While Larry Marks is a step up, its only a baby step up. Larry Marks is a 147lb. fighter, 154 at the most. Don't expect much from him at 168-175. Philly G
NONO, Lary Marks is a huge step up I think. What did he weigh when he fought Pernel from DC? I think that was like super middle weight.
Both Marks and Miller weighed 165 for their fight. This is a big step for Paschall and it will be a very close decision either way.
