Virginia Amateur Card Features Anticipated Rematch!

Amateur boxing returns to the ABC Sports Arena on Saturday, February 16 at 7:30 PM.

The main event on the card is a highly anticipated rematch between Danny Cabberro Foster of Annandale and Ash Poole of Staunton, VA. Foster defeated Poole last October and gave Poole his first loss. Poole bounced back from that loss and went on to win the Virginia State 152-pound title.

Tickets for the card are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Children under $10 will be admitted free. For more information, call 703-750-1751.

annandale does not invite black boxing clubs, the va abc is very very racis

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

That doesn't even sound right, i was there last week and there were probably 2 or 3 white people to to 35 Black...Do you mean just for the competition? that still doesn't sound right. Can you explain further?

That is a rediculous, ignorant statment. Do you realize the underlying racism you just exhibited? "Black Boxing club" implies that you favor black boxers/trainers over other ethnicities. If someone were to make a similar statment that their "white" boxing club was not invited, they would immediately be considered racist. Way to further the racial divide in our sport and country.

Obama in '08! Can't we all just get along?

Seriously, "black" skin color is an adjective, just like "white" skin color, "brown" eyes, "fat", "skinny", "long", "wide", "big", "small", etc. etc. This is 2008 and this is the United States of America, which in spite of all of her faults, is still the Greatest Country on the face of the Earth!

That is ridiculous. I work out at the ABGC Boxing Club and there are plenty of african americans there.

It is not racist at all.

As one the people that have been affiliated with Annadale in one way or another for some time I can assure you that your remark is without doubt the most ignorant and trouble making Racist statement
that I have ever heard.
you are one person that should never be allowed to post a comment
on this blog.

call all the clubs in va, and see who got invited and who did not

Telling Gary to call all the gyms in an area doesn't even cut it.
You have made an accusation. You provide which gyms were not selected based on race. I bet you can't.
I bet somewhere along the way you or your kid didn't cut it in ring, just like you are not cutting it here and it's easier for you to think it's racial than you just don't cut it. I could be wrong, but throwing it out there to you.

I'm not adding fuel to the fire or co-signing the comment, but I think what anonymous is speaking to is the fact that with DC/MD Amateur shows - the show schedule is well known and the information is readily available. This is not so much the case with the VA shows since I've been in the sport.

In DC/MD most shows are open to any gyms who would like to attend. Is the ABC open to all gyms?? Who do we contact and when is the weigh-in? I always hear about VA amateur shows after the fact and when I've called, I always am told that the card is full. Just my two cents. . .

Now see that last statement sounds intelligent. Would be nice if someone from ABC could respond with their announcement & selection protocol.

I wager it's probably a "lack of communication" issue as it seems like pulling teeth to get amateur information to a free abundant source such as this blog.

Thats not true about ABC and even if it were-stop crying and get on with your life. You sound like Britney Spears or Paris Hilton

I am bringing 5 boxers to Annandale. Three white, one black, and one hispanic. This is the first time that I have ever thought about our racial demographics. I believe that our profile is very close to the United States average. I believe that we are invited because we are honest and dependable, not because of our ethnic origins.

bruce please,no one step up and said anything but va LB IS RACIST,YOUR JUST HIDE THE FACT

I still am confused why the VA shows aren't open to any gym like 100 percent of the DC/MD shows. Is there a reason you have to be invited? We have nationally ranked and competitive amateur boxers from the dc area, but I have never received any information for the VA shows and have never heard (not that they haven't) of any of the DC/MD gyms particpating. I'm not stirring up anything, maybe the VA shows are run different. Even the last poster said "invited". What does a gym need to do to get invited? Can anybody shed light?

Anonymous said...

So Bruce are DC and MD gyms not "honest and dependable"? They are never "invited" to VA shows. You were better off leaving that part off of your post.

Anonymous said...

I have never heard of a VA club being invited to a MD/DC eventunless it is a regional event. So it works both ways. Also you match on weight, age and experience so you don't always have a fight in every class.

Anonymous said...

That's the point. DC/MD shows are open to anyone that's show up, you can be from a club or not. I am completely aware of how matches are made. At DC/MD shows if you haveva valid passbook you can weigh-in and get matched up. We regularly see gyms from WV, PA, FL, and NY at shows. Sometimes the gyms from far away get "prematched" as much as you can.(If fighter no-shows or isn't the weight they were supposed to be - there's nothing you can do). You say you have never heard of VA clubs not being invited to DC/MD shows but THERE IS NO INVITATION OF ANY GYMS!! SHOW AND YOU CAN GO!!

Your comments reflect the true attitude of the VA clubs but it seems that the VA clubs suffer from that. They don't even come to DC/MD gyms for sparring. When all the area boxers meet for regional or national tourneys - VA never makes it. For example, here were over 20 boxers from the DC area at the East Coast Silver Gloves and ONLY ONE FROM VA (maybe two) - So your policy of not working with DC/MD really seems to be working :) Someone posted a comment on BATB on the item about the East Coast Regionals that said "VA Clubs used to do much better, what happened?" This is what happened. You VA clubs arw doing a disservice to your fighter by not taking advantage of allowing them to box some of the Nation's best in your own backyard because of whatever issues you have with DC/MD.

Can't wait to read your response. Facts are facts.

Anonymous said...

I've never called about a DC/MD show and been told "card is full" like I have on VA shows. DC/MD will have 30 bouts if that's what is matched. They may not have awards for everyone but it's about getting the work.

Anonymous said...

The biggest coaches in VA were Willie Taylor(past president), Scott Farmer, Carrigian and Dan Campbell(USA Boxing coach). The word on matches did not always get the publicity that it should have gotten but I have never known in those days for a match to be closed. It seems to me that it is best for the coaches to stay in touch with each other if you want to have multi state events. The only event that I know of where VA kids would fight was the Mayor's Cup but I also know that DC would not accept any VA officials to work the event. Now it also says any official in good standing can work any event. The only time I experienced this was at the regionals.

Anonymous said...

Can anyone provide contact numbers for the coaches in VA (DC metro) so that I can make some calls to make sure that I know about upcoming shows? I think that would be a great start. Or at least give me a list of the gyms and I can find the numbers.

I agree that the publicity of the matches isn't always the greatest but word of mouth is a very powerful tool. Again, it's a start.

Now Willie don't feed into to this. You know what the problem was with you. Folks had no problem inviting Dan.

This card has been cancelled.
This is straight from the horses mouth.I thinkj it was from all the negativity produced from the comments on this blog.
Job well done readers.
Ass holes.

If a boxing show is cancelled because of comments on an website, that's a sad commentary on technology and sports.

The world is full of malicious individuals and I would hate to arm someone with knowing that merely words can shut down opportunities for amateurs to compete in any sport.

I seriouisly doubt that someone would give that much credence to anonymous opinions posted on BATB. Really.

Yes, Anonymous is back.

Although this blog gets the usual spineless scaredy cats slinging crap at whoever they hate or are jealous of, it's not always a bad thing. There are many good comments that spotlight undercurrents and potential issues (or alleged issues) like this one.

Most readers acquire an enhanced ability to cut through all the nonsense. Anonymous raises the interest and often the entertainment bar and gives this treasured blog it's unique character.
