New Beltway Boxing Poll: Who Wins -- Nwodo or Wilson?

I rarely do a poll such as this, but I am so curious to see what Beltway Boxing Fans think about the USBA Cruiserweight championship between champion Emmanuel "Chukwu" Nwodo of Baltimore and challenger Darnell "The Ding-A-Ling Man" Wilson of Silver Spring that I had to create this poll.

If you remember back in January, I asked you what bout would you most like to see along the Beltway in 2007. The Nwodo-Wilson bout placed second in the poll behind a matchup between Anthony Peterson and Dorin Spivey. But out of all the proposed matchups listed, this one is the first to actually become a reality.

I plan to talk to both men within the next two weeks and you'll hear those interviews right here. However, here is what we already know about the Friday, June 29 matchup that will be nationally televised on ESPN2 from Wagner College in Staten Island, NY:

Nwodo is 21-3, 17 KO's. Nwodo won the USBA title on July 1 at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA with a third-round TKO over Chris Thomas. He hasn't fought since. However, since coming full-time to the United States, The Nigerian native Nwodo is 10-0 with eight KO's. He has knocked out his last three opponents and seven of his last eight. Nwodo is ranked eighth in the world by the WBA and ninth by the IBF.

Wilson is 21-5-3, 18 KO's. Wilson has won three straight -- all by knockout to solid competition (Daniel Judah, Dale Brown and Kelvin Davis) -- after losing four in a row. On March 24, 2006, Wilson lost a unanimous decision to Felix Cora for the NABF Cruiserweight title. The win over Brown on January 19, 2007 gave Wilson the Trans America Cruiserweight title. Wilson is ranked 13th by the IBF and tenth by Ring Magazine.

This will be a great battle that I want your opinion on. Please answer the poll question.

Where is the Middendorf vs Hall poll?

Gary Digital Williams said...

There is and will be no poll. Nwodo-Wilson is a much better matchup.

Rumor has it the winner of Middendorf-Hall will then take on the winner of Nwodo-Wilson, so, if I'm Chris, I go down early. We all know Josh, even at this stage of his career, could handle Nwodo and Wilson on the same night.
By the way, Digital has set up an excellent poll here. This is a fascinating fight, and the winner should certainly be in line for a title shot. Ding-a-ling has come so far and his most recent bouts were his best. He shows good conditioning, better focus than ever, and, as usual, tremendous punching power. Nwodo doesn't have the experience against the same caliber competition, but is a tremendous belter, too. This might be one of the under-the-radar must-watch fights of the year. And if you're asking me to pick a winner, no dice. -- John Scheinman

How about a poll on that crazy little leprchaun vs Schienman? I heard Jon has him by a hair!

Darnell is on a roll, focused and in shape. I am confident his experience and power will combine to make Beltway fans proud. Darnell by 6 rd ko. Side note, Digital your efforts here to keep boxing alive in the beltway area are much appreciated. Your focus on the fighters and not the politics is refreshing. Thank you for taking time to keep this going, I depend on you for local boxing news.

It is highly unlikely Wilson will beat Nwodo. As long as Nwodo stays outside I do not think Wilson has a chance.

Nwodo's fight last July showed us he is the class of the cruiser weight division.

I would not be shocked after the June 29th fight if Teddy declares Nwodo one of the best fighters in the world.

I think Wilson and Hall win both their upcoming matches. Both by brutal KO!

Anonymous said...

yes! And you are right. Nwodo is one of the best fighter in boxing today. If you saw him fight in last July, you will be in shock. He had improved so much in speed and power that I really dont think Wilson will last full 12 rounds.Wilson likes to take few shots to land one of his own but in this case he wont be able to take shots from Nwodo. when he does his nose, cheek bone ,eye brows and jaws. I can see his whole face breaking. It is humanly impossible to take 5-6 shots from Nwodo. No way !! Nwodo wins ko5.

I'm going w/ Nwodo. Even though the fact that he hasn't fought in awhile worries me a bit, I was at that ABC show in July (Digital, wasn't it Chris Thomas, not Gret Thomas?), and Nwodo's one tough dude.

Come on G Money, put that poll up with Chrissy vs Josh!

Gary Digital Williams said...

Not a chance! Let's talk about a real meaningful bout like Nwodo-Wilson!

Nwodo by decision. You guys forget, ding-a -ling has been in with heavies and took their shots well. Any word on the final card at Michael's 8th?

G you are hater and Chris lover. Break the story on what he is really doing to our beltway fighters.

Gary Digital Williams said...

Can't do it without proof and as far as I can see, there is none. No one has the guts to bring any to the front.

what do they really say chris is doing to the fighters?

he has cheated and stole from so many local boxers. u cannot trust him at all. he has even white outed certain things in boxers contracts and then paid them a different amount than what was agreed on.

See you loser who said Chris was the matchmaker, shut your piehole up on stuff you don't know. That card was very good and because Middendorf was not involved. He ruined Ballroom Boxing and tried to do that to my boss Jake's cards too!

CHRIS IS BAD FOR THE BOXING !

Anonymous said...

Why the excitement for Nwondo based on his last win? He beat a 35 year-old who had never beaten anyone. He should have been impressive against Chris Thomas, a guy Kelvin Davis (Who DW ko'd) blew out also.

Nwondo has never been more than 8 rounds, and has been stopped prior to this fight. He has also broken his right hand in a previous fight. This guy is far from unbeatable.

What do people see in DW's background that show's he is vulnerable to a KO? Darnell has a tested, solid chin, never been stopped and is a finisher. He has shown the ability to go the distance with a puncher on a few occasions.

This is the first time Nwondo has stepped up to this level. Some may say Mayfield was a good stoppage, but Mayfield was done at the point they fought. Stand by Darnell, as long as he shows up in shape.

All I had to see was the way Nwodo throws punches and the power in the punches. Wilson has never impressed me. Sonny Liston was a step up for Ali but we all know the results.

Wilson's a tried and tested warhorse... but Nwodo's a thoroughbred...

The difference will be seen in front of a national audience. Frankly, I don't see Darnell lasting three rounds.

Teddy Brenner, the greatest matchmaker ever, once said, "when you put a face fighter (Darnell) in with a true puncher (Nwodo), the puncher always wins..."

Nwodo KO's heavyweights with single shots. Darnell's not even gonna see the punches coming. In his recent sparring sessions, Nwodo's movement , speed, and jab have been phenomenal. If Darnell manages to occasionally get past that, then he's gonna have to deal with the POWER... a truly unnatural power for a cruiserweight.

It's gonna be exciting while it lasts, but it's gonna be strictly one way traffic.

Styles make fights, and there is no one better suited to make Nwodo shine brighter than Darnell Wilson.

yo boxbible, this is the one of few times that I agree with your comment. The style makes the fight.
Defenite win for Nwodo, no doubt about this one.

One of the serious facts to note is that the thoroughbred that you speak of has been dropped and hurt a couple of times around the beltway. If you didnt know, you betta ask somebody. And once wilson starts hitting him and takes his shots, he will fold and be stopped. Fact

I've never heard once of wilson being dropped in sparring like nwodo. sounds like boxbible sees or hears what he wants, but is not aware of what really happens cause he obviously isnt there on a regular.

Wilson By KO!! Ron Krull

Boxbible is Emmanuel's promotor. You say Emmanuel has power and Darnell doesn't? That thoroughbred hasn't seen even close to the opposition Darnell has seen and Darnell knocks out heavies in sparring too. I'm not going to deny Emmanuel's power, but I will bet on Darnell's over his. The one way traffic he speaks about is about to go down a wrong way street. Wilson by brutal ko within 5.

Sorry, I'm not Nwodo's promoter. Just know him from his days in Kenya and met him over here.

Record-wise, can't blame anyone for going with Darnell. He's had the tougher comp and is on a roll.

BUT... there IS a significant talent gap. And it's grown twice as wide recently. There is also a considerable difference in speed, reflexes and athleticism between the two fighters.

If Darnell catches Nwodo, doubtless there'll be damage done. But with the speed, reflexes and phenomenal improvement in footwork and defense, I don't see anything landing from Ding-a-ling.

What happened THREE years ago was a learning experience. Nwodo didn't even have a stance.

The only guys that'll give Nwodo problems today are lateral movement counterpunchers. But if you stand in front of him in a shootout, NO ONE, repeat, NO ONE, can outpunch this guy.

good work Boxbible, again i agree with you.

Disagree again boxbible. Owen Beck couldn't put Darnell down, who was a top heavy at the time, and anyone with eyes could see Darnell was not fazed with the Kelvin Davis BS knockdown, both of who can punch. I have had the pleasure of seeing Emmanuel at the Blue Horizon and he looks to be a fighter trained from the ground up. Solid skills with power. Darnell is unorthodox and can hit, which is what I see giving Emmanuel problems. lateral moving counterpunchers wouldn't give Emmanuel problems, they are tailor made for Nwodo, who can easily cut the ring off and fluster them with his power. Dale Brown went toe to toe with the #2 rated (currently) Bell and Bell hits like a ton. Darnell destroyed Brown in two rounds. Kelvin Davis gave O'Neil hell before being stopped and Darnell knocked him out in three with his non-power hand. Darnell's chin is proven to be solid and the fact that Emmanuel HAS been knocked out, even if three years ago, still proves he can be knocked out. You can't train your chin, period. Darnell has had 5 more fights than Emmanuel so don't give me the "he had no stance three years ago" because they have almost equal experience with Darnell only having about 20 amateur fights. While we don't agree on the outcome, we can agree that this will be a good scrap while it lasts and is an ESPN classic waiting to happen.

You seem pretty smart Steve... but after June 29th, you're gonna be a little wiser... ;^)

R U gonna be at the fight?

Emmanuel vs Darnel-Emmanuel wins by ko.
Emmanuel has improved so much as a fighter and as a person. He has matured, 100% ready for this fight.
Darnel has very good power that can KO people with sigle shot. But is he gonna land that lottery? NO.
He hasnt learned anything, same fighter he was 3 years ago when i first saw him. He has great trainer, Charles Mooney. He is one of the top trainer in the area. Darnel doesnt listen, he yells back and curse back at the coach. He doesnt show or respect his coach. Thats is the reason why he hasnt changed as a fighter. Thats all gonna show on 6-29th. Coach Mooney , you are a Good coach and a good man. You deserve better treatment from the fighters than that. Dump his ass!!

- Boxbible, yes I plan on coming.

- Above post, I stopped reading when you said Darnell is the same fighter as three years ago.
