Mike Dietrich Returns May 11 in Baltimore!

In a year that has already provided good stories for Beltway Boxing, this one may be the feel-good story of 2007.

Baltimore Pro Boxing promoter Jake Smith tells me that the Friday, May 11 card at DuBurns Arena in Baltimore will feature the return of undefeated heavyweight "The American Dream" Mike Dietrich. The return comes a year and a half after Dietrich was stabbed in a dispute at a friend's house in December of 2005.

Smith says Dietrich (7-0, three KO's)has been training in the gym for about three weeks and doctors say he is 100 percent. Smith adds that Dietrich will be training in the Catskills with trainer Kevin Rooney, who was working with Dietrich before the stabbing.

Dietrich's last bout was on December 7, 2005 when he stopped Mike Van Meer in the first round at Martin's West in Woodlawn, MD. The stabbing took place nine days later.

Also scheduled for this card will be the rematch between Jessie Nicklow and Matt Berkshire as well as appearances by Mike Paschall, Elias Bouloubassis, Horace Grant, Henry Mayes and Shelly Sievert.

Hey Gary, I don't mean to steal any thunder from Mike Dietrich (Congrats, you are already a champion in my book), but just wanted to pass along some info. It looks like both Reaggie Holly and Sammy Retta (Ethiopia, via Alexandria, VA although I'm not certain he still trains or lives there) are fighting tonight. Reggie fight in NC and Sammy in Egypt.

Sammy Retta has pulled out of more fights than Wilt Chamberlain has pulled out of......
Sammy is the type of person that takes money from unknowing managers to get ready for fights that never happen and then moves on to the next sucker. Beltway boxing is better off without him.
