Those are some good ones! Best haircut, Robles, I don't think so but I know it's tongue in cheek.

I'm glad Jake Smith got a mention for best promoted shows on an ongoing basis. I'm really surprised he didn't get more votes and that Ballroom Boxing (at least as far as I know) didn't hardly register with the voters.

Speaking of that, I'm surprised that not many votes were really cast. I wonder why that was? Gary, do you have any idea how many people have gone on your site?

Tony The Tiger Thompson vs. Hasim The Rock Rahman in Baltimore! That would be a big fight for the area but Thompson would crush Rock!

Spivey vs. The Petersons, no contest there. The Petersons are on another level.

I heard Dietrich has some medical issues because he was stabbed. What happened to Russ Shiflett?

Psychologically debilitating! Funny stuff! as is "The Resident Physician of Pugilism of Boxing Along The Beltway, The Fight Dr. Jerom Spears"! That's priceless!

HAHAHA!!! Good stuff!

BTW - Tger vs. Rock an excellent idea, as is Nwodo-Wilson and Lange-Coley. But Lange-Mitchell? Naw...Lange just plain too big for him . Besides, Sharmba had a good career, but I think it's time for him to call it a day.

" Better to retire one fight too soon, than one fight too late." -Anonymous

" Do not listen to the old fighter. He will lie. To both himself, and ultimately -- the canvas." - The Cruiserweight (Bizzy)

BTW - Absolutely no doubt SRL the greatest beltway boxer of all-time, but just out of curiosity, would Kid Norfolk be considered a Beltway fighter?

Anonymous said...

Upon second thought...That is possible Mike.

The guy I really feel for is Tony Thompson. He is more or less in the same boat as Ohio's Ray Austin. Two good 2nd tier type fighters that can't get a good money fight. And both the same age at 35. You know, I know they are (understandably) after the big six-figure paydays, but it might be who've of them to just GET ACTIVE and take some ESPN/OLN fights at this point. Inactivity and father time can be very unforgiving...

Anonymous said...

***...Perhaps those two could fight EACH OTHER??? (Nobody else seems to want to fight them, and would be a good matchup!)

All young fighters have to start somewhere. Farmer is only 19 or 20 years old from what I understand. He's got plenty of time, and from what I see, a whole lot of talent. So what if he lost, that's not the end of the world. Same way with Robles. He is exciting and looks like he's a good athlete. Plus, he's a cruiserweight and that division has always been wide open for the taking. You never really know what could happen. Hate on hater! I'm talking to you Slam/DC. If these guys do well it's only going to help boxing in the area. How do you know anything about these guys management and promotional ties? You don't know what they have or don't have. Negative, negative, negative. Turn that frown upside down hater!

Anonymous said...

Stop the hating. This venom being spit is pure shit. Andrew can fight, period. Robles is tough as hell but still very basic. His haircut is probably the worst I've ever seen, even worse than Perry Ballard's, but that doesn't mean he can't fight a bit. Lange/Mitchell would be a huge fight here in VA at the Patriot Center. Sharmba may not be world class anymore but he may want to show he's still the best around here (and he'd make a shitload of money). Just some "anonymous" thoughts.

Hahahahaha

billy d,
You Rock!

Here we go again. How did Perry Ballard get pulled into this? You've made comments about his "mullet" before, but have you ever actually seen the man? I've known him for a long time and don't think I've ever seen him with an unusual haircut...it would jibe with his two Masters degrees and his consulting firm.

I'm surprised you didn't pull Chris Middendorf into this....or Mr. T. When you learn to write your name, feel free to sign it some time.

Please, please do not suggest that Lange fight Mitchell. Mitchell is a two time world champion, a legitimate shot for the Hall of Fame, winner of 57 fights. Mitchell won early, disappeared, fought his way back to the top against many, many tough fighters. Mitchell, even at half is old self would have Lange's head bouncing like a basketball. Lange, who has already dealt with one embarassing loss in his career (Gilbert in Virginia) does not need a second one. Mitchell would show Lange to be what he is - a limited, club fighter who has benefited greatly by having a significant fan base. But unlike Matt Vanda, Jimmy can't really fight. So he can have Dundee, Gallagher and McGirt in his corner, but it don't matter. Mitchell will take him to school, and destroy whatever confidence the poor kid might have. Whoever is thinking of this, please forget it. I don't even think that Mitchell would want this fight, as he is a smart enough fighter and seems like a good enough soul that he would see no reason to put the hurt on Lange.

Mitchell a legitimate shot for The Hall Of Fame??? What Hall are we talking???

Please, don't get me wrong: Mitchell was a very good fighter that had a very good career. But great Hall Of Fame fighter? With all due respect...NO!

Peace...

To Digital: Gary, is there any chance we could get a Tony Thompson interview sometime in the near future?

I was intrigued by your top Beltway match-ups, Gary. While most of the raised eyebrows on this blog were over the suggestion of Jimmy Lange vs. Shamba Mitchell, the one that surprised me was Jimmy Lange vs. Derrell Coley.

The last time Coley was in the professional ring was three-and-a-half years ago, and that was against a highly questionable (26-105) opponent. Have you heard anything about Coley contemplating a comeback, or is that just wishful thinking?

Anonymous said...

Derrel Coley is now working at Value City furniture store in Waldorf Maryland. He aint even seen a gym in 2 years...

Anonymous said...

Clyde - Well, if that's the case (and he's got to be about 35 by now) he should stay retired.

Best of luck to him in the future. He'll have a few stories to tell the kids and grandkids indeed.

Anonymous said...

Coley would knock out Lange with three days in the gym. His skill sets are at such a higher plane then Langes that he would embarass Lange. Sammy Sparkman beat Lange at the DC Convention Center and he had half the skill that Coley has.
Lets just let Jimmy continue to make great money fighting stiffs in Virginia. Thats good for him, good for the promoter, great for the undercard fighters who get to be seen by a good crowd and good for Va. boxing. Lets just not make it out to be any more than that.

Anonymous said...

Well, I hear you. Someone on these boards reffered to Lange as 'world class' awhile back, and I felt the need to correct them. He's not 'world class' in my opinion, but not a 'bum' either. He's a good club-fighter. Nothing more, nothing less at this point, and no shame in that. Peace...

(* Has it been that long since Coley has been in the ring, Chris? I guess it has. Time flies...)

Here's another unoffical official award. From the Fight Doctor, Jerome Spears. I got this quote from watching the fights on the internet:

Jerome Spears, "OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

when somebody gets rocked with a big shot!

You guys are great Gary and Jerome. Your enthusiasm when calling the fights shows that you both are true fans at heart! Keep up the great work!

With due respect to Bizzy (and I do respect your insight)Jimmy Lange shed his status as a club fighter the night that he and Perry Ballard filled 5,000+ seats in the Patriot Center in Jimmy's first post-Contender bout. He's sustained that average over four fights now, and those aren't club fighting numbers by any means.

Part of being a great fighter is that intanglible X-factor, something that sparks people's interest, commands attention and sells tickets that are not cheap; something that makes large numbers of fans feel like the fighter's victory is their win, and that the fighter's defeat is their disappointment. Very few of Jimmy's fellow Contender alums can pull those numbers. (I can think of perhaps three.)

That being said, there is a huge gulf between club fighter and world class, and ring performance is the core of the latter. Without a major title or a PPV main event, that elite title is a non-issue.

World class is to what Jimmy and all professional boxers aspire, and I wish him all the luck in the world and look forward to watching him grow.

I disagree with the assertions that Jimmy Lange would be wiped out by Derell or Sharmba. Jimmy has sparred many rounds with those guys and held his own. This was back when these guys were on top of their game and Jimmy was a relative novice. A fight with Coley and Lange probably wouldn't ever happen because Coley has campaigned most recently at middle and the two are buddies. And while I believe Jimmy and Sharmba and Jimmy are also friends, that fight would be a huge local draw and a great learning experience for Jimmy. I think Sharmba would take it for the payday.

BB! I'm trying to get Tony on for sometime this week.

Anonymous said...

Chris - Point well taken, and I stand (partially) corrected. And no doubt if he is a 'club fighter'...He's a VERY popular and succesful one indeed! I guess to be more specific, he would be at a level somewhere between that of 'club-fighter' and 'world-class' in my opinion.

Gary - That would be great!

Hater, no way! Just a realist!

You can have all of the potential talent in the world, although if you do not have a big time manager or promoter with money to spend! You are not going anywhere! Get it! Bottom line is, they have no money and they are from the backwoods! Good night John Boy or Billy D or what ever your name is! lol!

Sure fans were clapping for Robles! To get the fight over! Also, the Farmer kid had a few clapps but they turned on him like a pack of wolves! The crowd wanted to see him KO'd! To his credit he stood in there and took a beating the last two rounds! Bottom line is he lost to a TN fighter! huh!

Damn shame I only have one leg or I would fight again!

Till the next good blog!

Yo Slam/DC,

You've got one leg and a half a brain!

I ask you yet again. How do you know anything about Juan Robles and Andrew Farmer's backers?

All I'm saying is that you're looking for negativity, that's all you're doing.

By the way, I put in a very under rated performance in Star Wars. I never did receive the recognition I deserved for that one! Where's my Colt 45?

Slam/DC and Billy D,

That is an example of how to argue and keep things interesting on a blog. You guys are funny as hell and talking trash but not insulting anyone's character. I wish others would follow you lead on Digital's blog. Opinions are welcome, and come on, this IS chocolate City, trash-talking is welcome. But personal attacks are unnecessary and detrimental. You guys both sound like true fans.

Learn how to spell and write and I will comment on other posts!

Yes, just having fun!

As for how I know who there backers are? lol! They don't have any!

Good luck with the TN fighters! lol!

Billy D knows whats up! Some people know boxing and some people watch boxing!

These blogs ar for everyone!

Have fun!
