It may have marked the end of a successful career. Former WBA Super Lightweight champion Sharmba Mitchell was just punished by the man known as "The Punisher," Paul Williams, last night in Reno, NV.
Williams, who is ranked in the top 10 at welterweight by all the major boxing governing bodies, dropped Mitchell four times during the bout, once in the third and three times in the fourth before the bout was stopped at 2:57 of the fourth.
Williams, who is from Augusta, GA but trains a lot in the DC area, raises his undefeated record to 31-0 with 23 KO's. Mitchell falls to 57-6 with 30 KO's.
This should be the end of the road for the "Little Big Man." Mitchell has had an outstanding career and there is no need to go any further with it.
Beltway Boxers won two bouts on this card. Undefeated DC lightweight Ty Barnette scored a first-round TKO over Rubin Jacoby. Barnette is 8-0, six KO's. Also, Baltimore junior middleweight Maxell "The General" Taylor won a four-round unanimous decision over Oscar Gonzalez to boost his record to 13-2-1, five KO's.
One other bout of note on this card. Chicago, IL cruiserweight Chris "Cold Steel" Thomas lost by fifth-round TKO to Kelvin Davis. I mention this because Thomas was scheduled to face Darnell "The Ding-a-Ling Man" Wilson in the main event of Han Kim's next show on Saturday, Sept. 16 at ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA. That may be up in the air now because of the knockout.
This is Thomas's second straight knockout loss. You'll remember that Emmanuel Nwodo stopped Thomas in the third round on Kim's last card on July 1 for the vacant USBA Cruiserweight title at ABC Sports Complex.

I saw some of that fight-man, Sharmba's a short guy! I have a few random questions (some may be stupid, but I'm still a relatively recent boxing fan)
1: I saw the last round of that Rahman-Maskaev fight replay (BTW, they mentioned the 4 Eastern European beltholders-one of them's 7' tall!); what is that gel they were putting on Maskaev's face between rounds?
2: I saw that they had tape problems between rounds (the tape they put on the gloves to make sure they stay on); I believe (I could be wrong here) that boxers also tape up their hands-what is the purpose of this?
3: Any more info about that Sept. 16 show yet?
Dearest Mr. Mitchell you have sincerely gave my living room true joy over the years with exciting fights. Things have changed and you need to get a daytime job. Paul Williams treated you like a Pitbull would treat any other living dog. He truly put it to your ass. Please wake up and do something else with your life. Open a local boxing gym up or something. Train some young ones. Open a clothing store, Detail cars, be the driver for the pro basketball player. You can do other things and be happy. You do not need to put yourself through this stuff anymore. You must be emmbarrassed. I over-heard Tamara saying that you were very upset last night at the club. We all wish you luck over here and we will keep your photos hanging on the wall. I do wish to here positive comments from the customers instead of negative ones.

1. The gel may have been vaseline to toughen the face.
2. The tape on the hands is there to help protect the boxers from injury and on the gloves to ensure they won't come off.
3. I will have a post about September 16 later today. Remember, though, things might change because of Thomas's knockout loss last night in Reno.

Just the repeated contact. The tape tries to protect the boxers knuckles and hand in general. Doesn't always work, though.
ACW The positive thing about wrapping hands correctly coupled with plenty of cushion around the knuckles- it protects the fighters most important tools (His Hands) The negative thing about that is it protects the one he is fighting. Would you rather get hit with an 8 of glove or a 10oz glove.
As the boxer gets more known and has more meaningful fights, his wrapping of the hands are more closely inspected. Lets not forget the re-wrapping of Trinidads hands during a major fight with Hopkins.
In the Amature during the last few years, hand-wrapping rules have changed so many times that not even the officials completely understand. Furthermore-there is no exact way to wrap a fighters hand. In fact, every trainer/coach thinks he has the proper way. My opinion is that a boxers hands are wrapped differenty depending on the age, weight, previous injuries, amature or pro, etc...
I will tell you that when your hands are wrapped correctly, you feel like you can punch through a brick wall. If you ever stop up at Old School Boxing, I will personally take time out to wrap your hands before you work out.

Boy...With all due respect to Sharmba - a once good but not great fighter, that is now about as washed-up as an old pair of Levi's - he looked like a 1st grader getting brutalized by a 6th grader the other night! Painful to watch!

Really, in all seriousness, what the guy up above said is true. Sharmba (probably) has over half his life still ahead of him. No sense in being "cannon fodder" and playing "Russian Roulette" with your brain.
Call it a day Sharmba. You had a pretty darn good ride.

I don't think anyone is throwing him to the dogs. Sharmba is receiving and should receive a lot of credit for representing this area well.
However, I think we should be honest. Sharmba's days of being a legitimate contender at 140 or 147 pounds are over. He has won a world title, but his loss to Paul Williams proves that he is past the point of being a world title contender at this stage.
Sharmba will go down in Beltway Boxing history as one of the best to ever come out of this area. That fact is beyond dispute.

Bay's situation is with his hands. Every time he has gone up in class, he has had hand injuries.
It will be tough for Pearson to beat a top flight boxer if he can't use his hands effectively.
