If this were the late 1960's, former WBO Junior Welterweight and current NABF Junior Welterweight champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley could probably lead a rousing chorus of "Back in the USSR."
Corley will make his sixth trip to a country in the former Soviet Union when he makes his second appearance in the Ukraine on Saturday, October 27 and faces undefeated hometown boxer Viktor Postol for the WBC International Silver Light Welterweight title at Club Sportlife in Kiev. Corley has also been to Russia and Kazakhstan in the last three years.
Corley (39-19-1, 23 KO's) is coming off his 10th round TKO victory over Paul McCloskey on May 5 in Northern Ireland. Postol (19-0, nine KO's) made the first defense of this title on June 27 when he won a 12-round unanimous decision over Yvan Mendy in Kiev.

Stevenson Wins Unanimous Decision; Andrews Wins Strange TKO; Shull Stopped in Fourth!
Baltimore welterweight James "Keep 'Em Sleepin'" Stevenson remained undefeated tonight at the Winchester Sportsplex in Winchester, VA with a six-round unanimous decision over "The White Tiger" Angel Rios of the Bronx, NY. According to Alec Kohut of MaxBoxing.com, Stevenson won by shutout on all three cards, 60-54. Stevenson is now 17-0, 11 KO's while Rios falls to 9-15, six KO's and maintains his streak of having never been stopped.
Stuarts Draft, VA junior welterweight Richie "The Rock" Andrews won by second-round TKO over Harlem, NY's Curtis Morton when Morton hurt his arm while throwing a punch when the two were in a clinch. Morton could not continue. Andrews is now 5-2-3, two KO's while Morton is now 1-3-2.

Winchester VA Boxing Card Finalized!
The United Boxers card to be held on Saturday, October 20th in the Wells Fargo Multi-Purpose Center at the Winchester Sportsplex in Winchester, VA has been finalized. There will be a mixture of Beltway Boxing talent and highly-regarded out-of-town prospects.
Undefeated Baltimore, MD welterweight James "Keep 'Em Sleepin'" Stevenson will headline the show in a six-round contest against "The White Tiger" Angel Rios of The Bronx, NY by way of Puerto Rico. Stevenson (16-0, 11 KO's) made a successful return after a 13-month absence and scored a first-round knockout over Dontre King on September 22 in Millersville, MD.
Rios (9-14, six KO's), however, may prove to be one of Stevenson's toughest opponents, despite his under-.500 record. Rios has fought many talented boxers in his career including Nate Campbell, Terrence Crawford, Dorin Spivey, Rod Salka and Juan Garcia. Rios has never been stopped in his career.
The co-feature bout will have undefeated Suitland, MD cruiserweight Venroy "Hardwork" July who will square off against Cullen Rogers of Akron, OH in a scheduled four-round contest. HBO Shows '2 Days' In the Career of Seth Mitchell!
On Saturday, October 27, HBO will premiere the last episode in their "2 Days" boxing show and the subject this time will be the Beltway's own Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell.
HBO cameras followed the Mitchell camp for 48 hours prior to his April 28 bout against Chazz Witherspoon at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. The program will air at 10 PM ET on October 27.
Mitchell, the undefeated heavyweight from Brandywine, MD (25-0-1, 19 KO's) will face Johnathon Banks (28-1-1, 18 KO's), in a 10-round co-feature bout on Saturday, November 17 at Boardwalk Hall. The bout will be televised by HBO.

Legendary Writer Sares Takes a Trip Down Beltway Boxing Memory Lane!
One of the reasons why this blog was created was to give boxing fans in the Beltway Boxing region knowledge of how great the boxing has been in this area over many years. I'm always encouraged when other writers -- in and outside of the Beltway -- realize this as well.

Presenting..Mr. And Mrs. Henry 'Discombobulating' Jones!
Saturday was a very busy day for many people in the Beltway Boxing Community, in and out of the ring. On Saturday, DC Boxing Hall of Fame ring announcer Henry "Discombobulating" Jones married the lovely LaTonya A. Kyler at Allen Chapel AME Church in DC. You may remember in March of 2012, Jones proposed to Kyler in the middle of the ring at the Washington Convention Center. Yesterday, they made it official.

Jargal Wins Majority Decision in New York; Snyder Loses Unanimous Decision in New Jersey!
Arlington, VA lightweight "The Mongolian Mongoose" Bayan Jargal broke a three-bout losing streak with a six-round majority decision over Luis Rodriguez of New York City Saturday night at the NYCB Theater in Westbury, Long Island, NY. This was the first time Jargal has been in the ring since November of 2011. Jargal is now 16-3, 10 KO's. Rodriguez is now 6-6-1, one KO.
In Newark, NJ, Berlin, MD super middleweight "The Berlin Bomber" Joshua Snyder lost a six-round unanimous decision to Ossie Duran of Paterson, NJ at Essex Community College. Temple Hills, MD's D'Mitrius Ballard continues his memorable 2012 by capturing the 178-pound Open title at the National PAL Boxing Tournament at the Seagate Centre in Toledo, Ohio Saturday night. Ballard won a 26-19 decision over Steven Nelson of Fort Walton Beach, FL. Ballard adds the PAL title to the National Golden Gloves championship he won earlier this year. This is also Ballard's fourth consecutive open PAL Championship.
In the Female Open 165-pound championship, Baltimore's Franchon Crews lost a 30-19 decision to Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields of Flint, MI. Also, Tiara Brown, who trains in DC at the Headbangers Gym but is from Lehigh Acres, FL, won the 125-pound female Open title with a close 23-22 decision over Virginia Fuchs of Kemah, TX.

Nelson Battles Perozzi to a Draw in Bermuda; Salinas Wins Unanimous Decision!
This news just coming in: The Bermuda Sun is reporting that The "All or Nothing" main event in Southampton, Bermuda between WIBA Female Middleweight champion Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson of Ashburn, VA and WBA titleholder and local favorite Teresa Perozzi has ended in a 10-round majority draw. Both ladies's belts were on the line along with the vacant WBC Middleweight title.
According to the Sun, the card was held in front of a sell-out crowd at the Fairport Southhampton. The Sun was updating the bout round-by-round up through the fourth round but then stopped until posting the result a few minutes ago. The Sun posted the scores and one judge (the one from Bermuda) scored the bout 98-92 for Perozzi. The other two judges saw the bout even at 95-95.
Nelson remains undefeated and this is the second draw of her career. She is now 6-0-2. Perozzi is now 9-4-2, one KO.

WIBA Middleweight champion Tori Nelson (right) weighed in at 156 1/4 pounds for her three-belt world title bout against WBA champion Teresa Perozzi that will be held tonight in Southampton, Bermuda. Perozzi came in at 157 pounds. The 10-round bout, in which the vacant WBC Female Middleweight title will also be on the line -- will be refereed by Steve Smoger, who worked the RBA Promotions card in Arlington, VA just one week ago.

Taylor Wins Majority Decision in Philadelphia!
Edgewood Arsenal, MD junior welterweight Emmanuel "Tranzformer" Taylor returned to his winning ways with a six-round majority decision victory over George Sosa of New Jersey Friday night at the National Guard Armory in Philadelphia, PA. No word yet on the scores.
With the win, Taylor is now 15-1, 10 KO's while Sosa loses for the first time in his career and he is now 6-1, six KO's.

Undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. returns to action on Saturday, November 9 as he headlines a card called "The Night of The Olympians" at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA.
Russell (20-0, 12 KO's) will take on Vyacheslav Gusev of Prokopyevsk, Russia (20-2, five KO's) in the 10-round main event contest, which will headline a ShoBox telecast on Showtime. Both men are ranked among the contenders in the featherweight division. The WBA places Russell at number four and Gusev at number 11. The WBO has Gusev (the WBO European champion) at number eight and Russell at nine.

Simpson, Isley, Robertson Win Junior Titles at National PAL Tourney; Shen Stopped By Olympian Shields!
On the penultimate day of the National PAL Tournament in Toledo, OH, three Beltway Boxers walked away from the Seagate Centre with championships in the junior division.
Baltimore, MD 110-pounder Lorenzo "Truck" Simpson won the 11-12 division in his weight class by defeating Harley Maderos of Brooklyn, NY 19-11. Also, Troy Isley of Alexandria, VA captured the 13-14, 110-pound championship in an all-Beltway final as Isley defeated Ivan Franco Calixto of Delmar, MD, 16-12. Calixto's brother, Rudy, lost a 15-8 decision to Otha Jones of Toledo in the 13-14, 85 pound championship bout.
In the 11-12, 75 pound title bout, Kavon Robertson of Staunton, VA won a 9-4 decision over Ty'shaun Humphrey of Cleveland, OH.

Local Boxers Head Out of Town This Weekend!
Three Beltway Boxers head to the Tri-State area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York this weekend for separate bouts.
Edgewood Arsenal, MD junior welterweight Emmanuel "Tranzformer" Taylor returns to action for the first time since November of 2011 when he faces George Sosa of New Jersey in a six-round contest tonight at the National Guard Armory in Philadelphia, PA. Taylor (14-1, 10 KO's) will try to bounce back from his first pro loss, an eight-round split decision to Prenice Brewer on November 10 at Fight Night in Washington, DC. Sosa (6-0, six KO's) is taking a big step up in competition as he has taken on competition with a combined won-loss record of 3-59-2. Sosa, who has fought all of his bouts in the Dominican Republic, is battling in the United States for the very first time.
Taylor weighed in today at 143 1/2 while Sosa tipped the scales at 146 1/2.

Roach, Ballard Advance To Quarterfinals of National PAL's!
Beltway amateurs Lamont Roach, Jr. and D'Mitrius Ballard have advanced to the quarterfinals of the National PAL Boxing Tournament in Toledo, OH.
Roach, who hails from Upper Marlboro, MD, won a 37-9 decision over Titus Williams of Elmont, NY, 37-9 in the Open 132-pound division while Ballard of Temple Hills, MD scored a 21-11 decision over Xavier Hayden of Las Vegas, NV in the Open 178-pound class.
On the female side, Tiara Brown, a Florida native who trains at the HeadBangers gym in DC, won a 32-12 decision over Jen Hamann of Seattle, WA.
In other Open action, Glen Dezurn of Baltimore, MD lost in the 132-pound class to Lavisas Williams of Rochester, NY by a 23-15 score. Also, Marquis Moore of Fort Washington, MD fell to Peter Reyes of Long Island City, NY, 23-21.

Day Two Of National PAL's A Tough One for Beltway Amateurs!
The second day of competition at the National PAL Boxing Tournament in Toledo, OH was a rough one for local boxers, but there were still a number of quality victories.
Fort Washington, MD's Marquis Moore won a 27-10 decision over Jermaine Howlett of Chicago, IL in the Open Male 165 pound division. Moore is the 2012 Armed Forces champion.
Also in open competition, Antwan Robinson of Baltimore won a 17-14 decision over Kevin Ford of St. Louis, MO at 123 pounds. However, Gary Antonio Russell of Capitol Heights, MD lost in the same weight class by a 14-10 decision to Emmanuel Folly of Philadelphia, PA.
In the Open 141-pound division, Montell Prudgett of Baltimore lost by RSC-3 to Evander Lamourt of Tampa, FL. At 152 pounds, Kareem Martin of Clinton, MD lost by tiebreaker 15-15 (52-50 in punch count) to Samuel Valentin of Land O'Lakes, FL while Shawn Woodford of Salisbury, MD lost by RSC-3 to William Hill of Detroit, MI.
In the Open 165-pound class, Demond Nicholson of Laurel, MD lost a 9-5 decision to Christopher Galeano of the Bronx, NY.

In the open division: Antwan Robinson of Baltimore, MD won a 19-9 decision over Eduardo Vasquez of Englewood, CO. Also at 123, Gary Antonio Russell of Capitol Heights, MD scored an RSC-2 over Xavier Griffin of Minneapolis, MN.
Lamont Roach, Jr. of Upper Marlboro, MD won a 14-11 decision over Hakeem Watkins of Columbus OH at 132 pounds. Also at 132, Glen Dezurn of Baltimore, MD scored an RSC-2 over Carlos Arce of Fort Myers, FL. Another local product, Gary Riley of Temple Hills, MD, lost his bout in the same weight class falling to Luis Cortez of Henderson, NV, 21-14 and Patrick Harris of Hyattsville, MD lost a close, 13-12 decision to Tommy Logan of Winter Haven, FL.
At 178 pounds, 2012 National Golden Gloves champion D'Mitrius Ballard of Temple Hills, MD is moving up in weight (he won the Golden Gloves at 165). However, Ballard was successful in his first round contest, defeating Reyes Marquez of Colorado Springs, CO, 14-11.

Snyder Faces Duran October 13 in Newark, NJ!
An interesting matchup that, according to one of the participants, is two years in the making, will take place on Saturday, October 13 at Essex County College in Newark, NJ. "The Berlin Bomber" Joshua Snyder of Berlin, MD will take on "The Ghanaian Gladiator" Ossie Duran of Paterson, NJ in a six-round contest.
Snyder (9-6-1, three KO's) told BATB that this is a bout he's wanted for that two-year period. It has been almost a year since Snyder was last in the ring. Snyder won an eight-round split decision over Maxell Taylor on November 3 in Cockeysville, MD. Duran (26-10-2, 10 KO's) hasn't been in the ring since December 18 when he lost a 12-round majority decision to Avtandil Khurtsidze for the vacant WBC Silver Middleweight title in the Ukraine. Some in the area may remember Duran when he lost a 10-round majority decision to Fernando Guerrero in Salisbury, MD back in October of 2009.

Hall of Famer Johnson To Join Sporting Legends at Chantilly Card Show This Weekend!
This has been an incredible year for Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson. First, his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame followed by an appearance as a analyst on Showtime Championship Boxing. Now comes word that Johnson will join other sporting legends at the Collectors Showcase of America event on Friday, October 12-14 at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA. Johnson will be signing autographs during this event.
Johnson's appearances will be on Saturday, October 13 from 1:15 to 2:45 PM and on Sunday, October 14 from 12:45 to 2:15 PM. Johnson will join many other famous athletes, many of whom have ties to the Beltway area.

Heavyweight Duane Mobley of Upper Marlboro, MD remains undefeated with a six-round unanimous decision over Dennis Benson. Mobley came very close to knocking Benson out in the third and sixth rounds but Benson managed to hang on and stay upright. Mobley won by scores of 59-55 (twice) and 58-56. Mobley is now 6-0, four KO's while Benson loses for the second time to Mobley and is now 1-4, one KO.
Haymarket, VA junior welterweight Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez won a four-round unanimous decision over Damon Antoine of Akron, OH. Rodriguez scored a knockdown in the first round and battered the durable Antoine all over the ring for the rest of the contest. Rodriguez won all three scorecards by 40-35. The win breaks a three-bout winless streak for Rodriguez, who is now 5-2-1, four KO's. Antoine falls to 10-41-2, five KO's.
White Plains, MD lightweight Terron "The Kid" Grant won a close four-round split decision over Stephon Alexander of Norfolk, VA. Grant survived a first-round knockdown and faced a really competitive Alexander who hit Grant with some solid shots. Grant fought back very well, however and eeked out the win. Judges Scott Howard and John Gradowski saw the bout 38-37 and 39-37, respectively while judge Brian Costello scored the bout for Alexander 39-37. Grant remains undefeated with a record of 4-0, two KO's. Alexander is now 4-5, four KO's.
The opening bout saw Fairfax, VA junior welterweight Joseph Rector make a thunderous pro debut, stopping the equally-debuting Samson Townes of Richmond, VA at 1:03 of the first round. Rector dropped Townes twice -- the first time with a blistering left-right combination.
Dr. Richard Ashby heads RBA Promotions. The matchmaker is Jay Pittman. The referee for the bouts was noted New Jersey referee "Double S" Steve Smoger.

We also had an opportunity to interview undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell about his November 17th bout against Johnathon Banks as well as another HBO project he is involved with.
I also had an opportunity to go back in Beltway Boxing History with a boxer who helped me start my boxing career. The first main event that I ever called for a television program featured a boxer by the name of Gerry "Rock" Payne. This was a rather unique main event in which Payne was also making his pro debut and the bout (which was held on March 24, 1990 at Coolidge Senior High School in Washington, DC) was a six-round contest. Payne, who was an alternate on the 1988 US Olympic Team, had a brief career of just 14 bouts (13-1, five KO's), but a number of them were memorable as he was a member of the famed "Hard Corps" stable of pro boxers that also included Derrell Coley, Reggie Green and the late Reuben Bell. I caught up to Payne tonight to see what he is doing now. Here's that interview, the first of what I hope will be an occasional series looking back at the recent history of Beltway Boxing.

We also had an opportunity to interview undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell about his November 17th bout against Johnathon Banks as well as another HBO project he is involved with.
I also had an opportunity to go back in Beltway Boxing History with a boxer who helped me start my boxing career. The first main event that I ever called for a television program featured a boxer by the name of Gerry "Rock" Payne. This was a rather unique main event in which Payne was also making his pro debut and the bout (which was held on March 24, 1990 at Coolidge Senior High School in Washington, DC) was a six-round contest. Payne, who was an alternate on the 1988 US Olympic Team, had a brief career of just 14 bouts (13-1, five KO's), but a number of them were memorable as he was a member of the famed "Hard Corps" stable of pro boxers that also included Derrell Coley, Reggie Green and the late Reuben Bell. I caught up to Payne tonight to see what he is doing now. Here's that interview, the first of what I hope will be an occasional series looking back at the recent history of Beltway Boxing.

Mobley Wins Unanimous Decision!
Duane Mobley wins a six-round unanimous decision over Dennis Benson in a rematch of Mobley's pro debut. Mobley had Benson out on his feet in the third and sixth rounds but couldn't finish him.
Mobley remains undefeated at 6-0, four knockouts. Benson falls to 1-4, one KO.

Rodriguez Wins Unanimous Decision!
Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez wins a four-round unanimous decision over the durable Damon Antoine. Rodriguez scored a knockdown in the first round and battered Antoine throughout the contest en route to an easy victory. All three judges scored the bout 40-35. Rodriguez is 5-2-1, four KO's. Antoine is 10-41-2, five KO's.

Grant Wins Tough Split Decision!
Terron Grant wins a four-round split decision over Stephon Alexander in an extremely close fight. Alexander scored a knockdown on Grant in the first, although it did look like a slip from ringside. The knockdown made no real difference, however.
The scores were 39-37 and 38-37 for Grant and 39-37 for Alexander. Grant is 4-0, two KO's. Alexander is now 4-5, four KO's.

Forrest Bout Off Card!
We have received late word that the Jerry Forrest-Wayne Hampton bout has been scrapped. No official word on what happened.
Possible upset in the making in the Grant-Alexander bout. Grant was knocked down in the first. They are in the fourth now.
Rector Wastes No Time in Pro Debut!
Joseph Rector makes short work of Samson Townes, knocking him down with a blistering left-right combination then finishing Townes off with an accumulation of punches until the bout was stopped at 1:03 of the first round. Both boxers were making pro debut.

My apologies for not getting the weights out, but there were some last-minute changes to this card and I never received those changes.

Salinas Joins Nelson on October 13 Boxing Card in Bermuda!
There will be two Virginia-based female boxers participating on a Saturday, October 13th card in Southhampton, Bermuda. We already know that WIBA Middleweight champion Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson of Ashburn, VA will defend her title and go after the WBA and WBC championships when she battles Teresa Perozzi on that card.
Now comes word that Manassas, VA featherweight "The Bolivian Queen" Jennifer Salinas has been added to the card and Salinas will face Karen Dulin of Mystic, CT. Salinas (12-3, four KO's) made a successful return to boxing after having a baby on July 28 as she won a five-round unanimous decision over Angel Gladney in Charlotte, NC. October A Big Month For Beltway Amateurs!
We already know that there are a number of area pro cards, primarily in Virginia in October, but this month is also a big month for the amateur scene as well. There are cards almost every weekend around the Beltway. Here's what we know so far.
Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6 -- Diamonds N the Rough along with Beltway Boxing legend Victor Davis are having a two-day card at the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center, 7707 Barlowe Road in Palmer Park, MD. Bell time for Friday's action will be 7 PM and Saturday's boxing begins at 3 PM.
Saturday, October 13 -- The Hagerstown Boxing Club will have an all-female boxing card at their gym located at 245 Prospect Avenue in Hagerstown, MD. Scheduled to appear on the card will be 12-year-old Mia "Killer Bee" Ellis of Baltimore. There are also boxers slated to come in from DC, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Tennessee. The card begins at 1 PM and some of the proceeds will go to breast cancer research.
Saturday, October 13 -- The DC Department of Parks and Recreation is sponsoring "The Brawl at the Market" at 225 7th Street, SE in DC. The card is slated to begin at 6 PM.
Saturday, October 20 -- Baltimore Boxing is hosting a card to bring awareness to the problem of bullying in our communities. The "Bully Beatdown" will take place at Du Burns Arena, 1301 Ellwood Avenue and Boston Street in Baltimore beginning at 6:30 PM. There is an East Coast Amateur Middleweight title bout scheduled for this card as Baltimore's Jerome Featherstone takes on DC's Keith Samuels.
Saturday, October 20 -- The Potomac Valley Association of USA Boxing hosts the "Battle of the LBC" as the PVA boxers take on boxers from Virginia. This event will be at Rosecroft Raceway located at 6336 Rosecroft Drive in Fort Washington, MD. The event will begin at 1 PM.
Also, a number of locals will be participating in the 38th Annual National PAL Boxing Championships in Toledo, OH from October 6-13. As soon as we get a list of who is going to be there, we will pass it along.

Mitchell to Face Banks (Finally) November 17 in Atlantic City!
We've said this before but it looks like NABO Heavyweight champion Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell will face Detroit, MI's Johnathon Banks in a nationally-televised (HBO) 12-round contest on Saturday, November 17 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.
The NABO title will not be on the line for the undefeated Mitchell (25-0-1, 19 KO's) from Brandywine, MD, but the bout is listed as a "WBC Semi-Final Elimination" contest. In the most recent WBC rankings, Banks (28-1-1, 18 KO's) is ranked fourth while Mitchell is seventh.
This is the third time this bout has been scheduled. The first time the bout was postponed after Mitchell suffered a hand injury in his win over Chazz Witherspoon also in Atlantic City. The second postponement took place when another bout slated for the same night was cancelled.

Best Wishes to Tracy Thorpe!
BATB sends best wishes and prayers to one of the leading ladies of the Beltway Boxing scene -- Tracy Thorpe of the South Atlantic Association of USA Boxing.
Thorpe recently suffered a stroke and is now in St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. Thorpe serves as the South Atlantic Association Registration Chairperson and has refereed a number of amateur bouts throughout the region.. Thorpe was the first female and first African-American to win the Harry Jaffra award from Ring 101 in Baltimore.

Virginia Continues 'Battleground' Mentality in Boxing with October 20 Card in Winchester!
As we head into the homestretch of the Presidential Election, the Commonwealth of Virginia is one of nine "battleground" states that both candidates will be trying to acquire.
But in October, Virginia has another version of the "battleground" mentality-- and this version will make the governing body of boxing in the state a very busy one. Virginia will be hosting three boxing cards this month!
We've already talked about this Saturday's RBA Promotions card at the Fort Myer/Henderson Hall in Arlington. We've also mentioned the Saturday, October 27th Jimmy Lange Boxing Promotions card at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax.
Now comes the United Boxers card that will take place on Saturday, October 20th at the Winchester Sportsplex in Winchester, VA. Scheduled to appear on this card is undefeated Baltimore, MD welterweight James "Keep 'Em Sleepin' Stevenson (16-0, 11 KO's). Stevenson returned to the ring after a year's absence and scored a first-round KO over Dontre King on September 22 in Millersville, MD.
Also slated for the card will be undefeated Suitland, MD cruiserweight Venroy "Hard Work" July (11-0-2, four KO's). July is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision victory over Justin Howes on June 16 in Baltimore.
Other locals slated to be on the card are the returning Baltimore lightweight Raymondo Elliott (1-1, one KO), Stuarts Draft, VA welterweight Richie "The Rock" Andrews (4-2-3, one KO) and rookie female flyweight Tyrieshia "Baby Girl" Douglas of DC (1-0, one KO). There are also a number of bouts featuring world class national prospects.

Peterson-Judah Costs $50,000 For Headbangers!
HeadBangers Promotions won a purse bid for the rights to promote the championship bout between IBF Junior Welterweight titleholder Lamont Peterson and mandatory challenger Zab Judah. In reality, HeadBangers was the only promotional company to bid on the bout and the winning bid was $50,000.
HeadBangers now has 90 days from today -- until January 2, 2013 -- to make the bout take place.

Quarles Faces Mackey on October 27 Patriot Center Card!
Another solid matchup has been added to the Jimmy Lange Boxing Promotions card on Saturday, October 27 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. This will be a classic battle of youth versus experience.
Undefeated Alexandria, VA middleweight Brandon Quarles will face veteran John "No Mercy" Mackey of Montgomery, AL by way of Washington, DC in what should be a quality six-round encounter. Mackey is trained and managed by Virginia boxing legend Han "Sugar" Kim.
Quarles (9-0, two KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision over Ike Ezeji on April 28 in Wilson, NC. Quarles scored two knockdowns enroute to the win. Quarles also scored a six-round unanimous decision over Omar Sims on February 25 in Millersville, MD.
But Quarles will face his most experienced opponent in Mackey (13-8-3, six KO's) who has fought a number of quality opponents in and out of the Beltway region. In December of 2007, Mackey participated in the Beltway Boxing Bout of the Year, defeating Tony Cygan by six-round unanimous decision. Among the other Beltway foes Mackey has faced are Jessie Nicklow (an eight-round majority draw in June of 2009), Cecil McCalla (an eight-round majority decision loss in April of 2009) George Rivera (a fourth-round TKO victory in November of 2010) and two bouts against Joshua Snyder (a nationally-televised [ESPN] four-round majority decision loss in June of 2008 and a six-round draw in November of 2008). Hampton (5-6, three KO's) has fought sporadically over the last three years, competing just once since 2009. That last contest saw Hampton lose by third-round TKO to Patrick Ferrell on August 18 in Atlantic City, NJ.

Grant (3-0, two KO's) scored a first-round knockout over Devirous Sanders on August 4 in DC. The win was Grant's second straight first-round knockout victory. Alexander (4-4, four KO's) has lost two straight and four of his last five.
DC light heavweight Greg Newby will be in a four-round contest against Jess Noriega of Lynchburg, VA. Newby (1-0, one KO) won his pro debut on August 25 in DC with a first-round knockout over Gavin Hume. Two of the last three losses for Noriega (0-3) have come to light-heavyweight prospects Thomas Williams, Jr. and Immanuwel Aleem by first-round knockout.
Another bout sees Temple Hills, MD cruiserweight Zakki Scott take on DC's Kareem Wilson in a four-round bout. Scott (2-0, one KO) last fought on March 10 in DC and won a four-round unanimous decision over Andre Ward. Wilson (0-6) has been disqualified in four of his six bouts.

Recap From DC!
Here is the recap from the Keystone Boxing card Saturday night at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC:
DC welterweight Dusty Harrison remains undefeated with a second-round TKO over Shane Gierke of Youngstown, OH. Harrison knocked down Gierke three times en route to the stoppage at 2:46 of the second round. Harrison is 9-0, five KO's while Gierke is now 5-27-2, four KO's.
After a six-year absence, Waldorf, MD light heavyweight "King" James McCallister wins a six-round unanimous decision over James Denson of Akron, OH. McCallister scored a knockdown in the fourth round but Denson got his shots in as well and had McCallister in some difficulty at times during the bout. Kudos to referee Michelle Myers for allowing both men to work their way out of trouble. McCallister is now 12-6-1, three KO's while Denson falls to 5-11, three KO's.
Palmer Park, MD junior lightweight Kevin Rivers, Jr. made his pro debut a successful one with a four-round unanimous decision over David Warren Huffman of Milwaukee, WI. A nice matchup saw Rivers win sweep all four rounds on the judges's scorecards. Huffman is now 1-8.
DC welterweight David "Day-Day" Grayton scored a first-round knockout over Anthony Jones of Jackson, TN. Grayton knocked down Jones four times before the bout was stopped at 2:14. Grayton is now 2-0, two KO's while Jones is 0-5.
Another DC welterweight, Harold "Sweet Lee" Parker, needed just 48 seconds to stop David Tomlin of Wilson, NC. Parker is now 3-1, three KO's while Tomlin is 0-5 and has yet to get out of the first round.
DC heavyweight Danny "Smooth" Kelly also scored a first-round TKO stopping Ryan Shay of Fort Mills, SC. The bout was stopped at 2:47. Kelly is 2-0, two KO's while Shay is 5-16, four KO's.

Kudos to referee Michelle Myers for allowing both men to work their way out of trouble. McCallister is now 12-6-1, three KO's while Denson falls to 5-11, three KO's.
Palmer Park, MD junior lightweight Kevin Rivers, Jr. made his pro debut a successful one with a four-round unanimous decision over David Warren Huffman of Milwaukee, WI. A nice matchup saw Rivers win sweep all four rounds on the judges's scorecards. Huffman is now 1-8.
DC welterweight David "Day-Day" Grayton scored a first-round knockout over Anthony Jones of Jackson, TN. Grayton knocked down Jones four times before the bout was stopped at 2:14. Grayton is now 2-0, two KO's while Jones is 0-5.

Harrison Wins By Second-Round TKO!
Fighting a bad cold, Dusty Harrison scored a second-round TKO over Shane Gierke. Harrison dropped Gierke three times, once with a scorching left hand to the body. Harrison finished it with a right to the head.
Harrison is now 9-0, five KO's. Gierke is now 5-27-2, four KO's.

McCallister Wins Comeback Bout!
"King" James McCallister returns after a six-year absence to win a six-round unanimous decision over James Denson. McCallister dropped Denson in the fourth round but was hit by shots himself.
McCallister is now 12-6, three KO's. Denson is now 5-11, two KO's.

Rivers Wins Four-Round Unanimous Decision in Pro Debut!
We finally have a bout go the distance. Even better, the bout was competitive. However, Kevin Rivers, Jr. wins a four-round unanimous decision over a very game David Warren Huffman. Rivers did a workmanlike job going to the body, although a few of his shots did go low.
Huffman may be the best 1-8 fighter we've seen in a while.

Grayton Stops Jones in One!
The preceding was a pummeling. David Grayton knocked down Anthony Jones four times en route to a first-round stoppage at 2:14. Three of the four knockdowns came on body shots. Jones left the ring with a cough that he didn't have coming in.
Grayton is now 2-0, two KO's. Jones is now 0-5.

Jarrett Hurd wasted no time in stopping Mike Arnold, dropping him twice en route to a first-round stoppage at 1:30. The last knockdown looked like it came slightly after Arnold tried to take a knee. It wouldn't have changed anything, but it's the principal of the thing. Arnold's now 0-9.

Hi again, everyone! We are in the E Hall of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in downtown DC getting ready for the Keystone Boxing card.
We'll start around 8:30 or so. There is one alteration to one of the records of the boxers. Marcus Clay, who will face Immanuwel Aleem in the opening contest, is actually 1-2. Clay, who is from Baton Rouge, LA, won a four-round split decision over Justin Verdin on September 12 in Elmwood, LA. Verdin was 9-1 going into that bout. Makes our first bout more interesting.

Rahman Suffers Second-Round Stoppage in Germany!
The only saving grace is that it didn't take long. Former world heavyweight champion Hasim "The Rock" Rahman has been stopped in the second round today in his WBA title bid against Alexander Povetkin in Hamburg, Germany.
The undefeated Povetkin rocked Rahman with his very first punch and it went downhill from there for Rahman, the native of Baltimore, MD. Rahman was never knocked down, but in the second round, Povetkin hit him with enough brutal shots to force referee Gustavo Padilla to stop the contest at 1:46 of the round.
Rahman entered the ring close to 30 pounds heavier than Povetkin and he also entered the ring without his trainer, former world light heavyweight champ Eddie Mustafa Muhammad who had visa issues. Quite frankly on this night, Rahman could have had Muhammad, Angelo Dundee, Gil Clancy and Eddie Futch working the corner and it wouldn't have changed the outcome.
Rahman's record is now 50-8-2, 41 KO's and we hope his record stays there. Povetkin is now 25-0, 17 KO's.

A Call For Peterson-Judah In November!
Negotiations are ongoing for a championship bout between IBF Junior Welterweight champion Lamont Peterson and mandatory challenger Zab Judah to take place sometime in November. BATB talked to Peterson's trainer/manager Barry Hunter Friday night and he says that the issue is just the time constraints on this as the proposed bout is slated to go to a purse bid very soon.

Rahman Weighs 256 For Bout in Germany!
Hasim Rahman weighed in at 256 pounds for his WBA heavyweight title bout with champion Alexander Povetkin in Hamburg, Germany. Povetkin came in at 229 pounds. The bout will be shown live on the EPIX Network at 4:30 PM ET on Saturday from the Alsterdorf Sporthalle in Hamburg.
The referee for the contest will be Gustavo Padilla of Panama. The judges will be Jose Roberto Torres (Puerto Rico), Alfredo Polanco (Mexico) and John Coyle (U.K.).

Fox Battles to Draw in New York!
Forestville, MD middleweight Alantez "SlyAza" Fox fought to an eight-round draw Saturday night against Frank Galarza at Resorts World Casino in Queens, NY. The bout was for the New York State Middleweight title.
The two undefeated boxers each won one judge's scorecard by a score of 77-75 and the third judge saw the bout even at 76-76. Fox is now 7-0-1, three KO's while Galarza is 7-0-1, four KO's.

Stevenson returned from an absence of more than a year and used solid power to drop King, who couldn't beat referee Kenny Chevalier's count at 1:50 of the round. Stevenson is now 16-0, 11 KO's while King is 6-13-2, two KO's.
Stevensville, MD middleweight Tony "Mo Better" Jeter captured the WBC Fecarbox Middleweight title with a fifth-round TKO of Tyrel "Hooligan" Brown of Fort Gibson, OK. An even bout through four rounds, Jeter changed the bout dramatically with a brusing right hand about a minute into the fifth. Mike Greenhill Has Returned!
We're very happy to report that ace boxing photographer Mike Greenhill has returned to ringside and he looks great and said he feels wonderful.
You may remember that Greenhill had an issue with his heart earlier this year. Greenhill said it was not a heart attack, it was a sudden cardiac arrest similar to what basketball players Hank Gathers and Reggie Lewis passed away from. In fact, Greenhill said only about five percent of people who suffer this survive. The workout regimen and diet helped his recovery.

BATB Talks With 'Mo Better' Jeter About September 22 Card!
BATB sits down with Stevensville, MD middleweight Tony "Mo Better" Jeter as he prepares for Saturday night's card at Club One Fitness in Millersville, MD. Jeter talks about his roles as fighter, promoter and matchmaker for this card. Jeter will headline the show with a bout against Tyrel Brown for the WBC Fecarbox Middleweight title.
Shah to Battle Yorgey in Patriot Center Co-Feature!
Undefeated Centreville, VA middleweight Zain "Tiger" Shah will battle veteran contender Harry Joe Yorgey of Bridgeport, PA in the co-feature bout of the Jimmy Lange Boxing card on Saturday, October 27 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.
Shah (5-0, three KO's, 1 NC) has not fought since his no-contest against Julius Kennedy at the Patriot Center on September 10, 2011. Originally, the bout ended in a second-round TKO for Shah, but the win was overturned after a review of the video by the Virginia Boxing Commission.
Yorgey (24-1-1, 11 KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision over Lawrence Jones at the Patriot Center on February 12 of this year. Jones was a late replacement for Shah, who had to miss the bout because of the flu.
Jones (4-6-2, one KO) will also be on the October 27 card as he faces "King Shango" Ivan Ziglar of DC by way of Virginia Beach, VA (7-2-1, four KO's). This bout could be called "The Battle of LA Boxing" as Jones is a trainer/instructor at the Northern Virginia branch while Ziglar is an instructor at the Georgetown headquarters.
As originally announced, the main event will feature an all-Beltway 10-round battle between Jimmy Lange of Great Falls, VA (38-4-2, 25 KO's) and Stevensville, MD's Tony "Mo Better" Jeter (13-3-1, nine KO's). Also announced was the pro debut of 2012 National Golden Gloves champion light heavyweight Jerry Odom of DC who will face another debuting boxer in DC's Malik Shelton.
Also making his pro debut will be former USA Boxing National Championships Bronze medalist Antoine Douglas. A middleweight living in Burke, VA, Douglas had a solid amateur career, winning the 2009 Junior Olympics and finishing in the top three at the National PAL Championships and the USA Boxing Nationals.

Peterson-Judah Talks Get Serious; Purse Bid Slated for October 2!
Ring Magazine's Lem Satterfield is reporting that talks between the camps of IBF Junior Welterweight champion Lamont Peterson and mandatory challenger and former world champ Zab Judah have reached a critical stage. The IBF has given the camps until Tuesday, October 2 at noon to come to terms for a title bout or the bout will go to a purse bid.
"We gave them the initial 30 days to negotiate, and they claimed that they couldn't get it done. So we gave them an additional week, and then they came back last night and asked for some more time, but we told them 'no.' So the purse bid letter went out today," IBF Championships Chairman Lindsay Tucker told Satterfield.
Peterson's manager and trainer Barry Hunter tells the Ring that if the bout happens, it could take place in DC in November at either the DC Armory or the Washington Convention Center. Hunter said that the delay in finalizing the deal could because Judah recently had a death in the family.
"I hope that all is well with Zab and his family during his time of grieving, and, hopefully, once he is beyond that, then we can get on with our business," said Hunter, who is dealing directly with the Judah Family.
"But I'm not trying to rush the man during this difficult time. It's just that, unfortunately, we're under a time frame within which to get this thing done. That's where we're at."

Update On September 29 DC Card!
Here is the update on the Keystone Boxing card slated for Saturday, September 29 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC:
The main event remains the same -- undefeated DC welterweight Dusty Harrison (8-0, four KO's) will take on Youngstown, OH veteran Shane Gierke (5-26-2, four KO's) in a six-round contest.
One of the six-round bouts marks the return of Landover, MD light heavyweight "King" James McAllister (11-6-1, three KO's) who will face James Denson of Akron, OH (5-10, two KO's). McAllister has not fought since April of 2006 when he lost a 10-round majority decision to Jason Naugler in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. McAllister's career began in 1999 and he faced quality opposition throughout his tenure including locals Andrew Council and Maurice Adams as well as Carlos DeLeon, Jr. George Klinesmith, Jameel Wilson and Dhafir Smith. Denson is coming off a four-round unanimous decision loss to Reuel Williams on August 31 in Dover, DE.
The other six-round contest matches Brooklyn, NY super middleweight Phillip Jackson Benson (8-1, seven KO's) taking on veteran John Michael Terry of Portsmouth, VA (4-22-3, one KO's). Benson scored a first-round KO over Anthony Pietrantonio on the last Keystone Boxing card on August 25 in DC. Terry won a four-round split decision over Jess Noriega on May 4 in Greensboro, NC.
In four-round bouts, DC welterweight Harold "Sweet Lee" Parker (2-1, two KO's) will look to bounce back from his August 25th, four-round, split decision loss to Richard Andrews by returning to DC to face David Tomlin of Wilson, NC (0-4). In another welterweight bout, David "Day-Day" Grayton (1-0, one KO) will face Antonio Sadler of Columbia, SC (1-1-1, one KO). M. Aleem, Davis Added to September 22 Card in Millersville, MD!
The Beltway's "Next Wave" of boxers aren't confined to the September 29th card in DC. The Jeter Promotions card on Saturday, September 22 at Club One Fitness in Millersville, MD has added two young boxers as well.
Undefeated Catonsville, MD junior welterweight Josh Davis returns to action on this card. Davis (2-0, one KO) last fought on the undercard of Lamont Peterson-Amir Khan on December 10 at the Washington Convention Center in DC. Davis won a four-round unanimous decision over Christopher Russell.
This card also will have the much-anticipated pro debut of Richmond, VA junior welterweight Moshea Aleem. Aleem has an outstanding amateur record including a number of championships. Aleem and his brother Immanuel (who made a successful pro debut with a first-round knockout of Jess Noriega in June at Henderson Hall in Arlington, VA) have relocated their boxing training camp to Club One under the training of George Peterson.

Women's World Champ Nelson Conducts Open Workout Before October Title Bout!
WIBA World Female Middleweight champion Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson of Ashburn, VA will be having an open workout for fans and media in preparation for her three-belt title bout on Saturday, October 13 in Southampton, Bermuda. The workout will be on Saturday, September 22 at the LA Boxing facility on 43150 Broadlands Center Plaza in Ashburn from 10 AM to 2 PM.
Nelson (6-0-1) will put her WIBA title on the line against defending WBA champion Teresa Perozzi of Warwick, Bermuda (9-4-1, one KO) in this 10-round bout. The vacant WBC title -- a title Nelson has previously held -- will also be on the line. The bout is being called -- "All or Nothing."

Mayor's Cup Tournament Returns September 14-15!
For many years, one of the premier amateur boxing tournaments in the DC area was the Mayor's Cup. During the 1990's, this tournament showcased some of the area's best boxing talent and helped prepare many for future success in the sport.
Now, after a four-year hiatus, the tournament (now sporting the official name of the Mayor's Youth Boxing Cup) returns and will be held on Friday and Saturday, September 14 and 15 at the Richard England Boys and Girls Club located at 4103 Benning Road in Northeast Washington, DC. On September 14, the action is slated to begin at 6 PM and on the 15th, the event starts at 1 PM. Admission is free.

Youth To Be Served at Convention Center September 29!
Two more members of the Beltway's "Next Wave" of now-former amateur champions will make their pro debuts on the Keystone Boxing card on Saturday, September 29 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in DC.
Palmer Park, MD lightweight Kevin Rivers, Jr. and Hillcrest Heights, MD light heavyweight Jarrett Hurd join what is already a loaded class of 2012 by making their maiden voyage into the pro ranks on this card. Rivers was a multi-time regional Golden Gloves champion and made numerous trips overseas in competition. Rivers was named the Outstanding Amateur of 2009 by the DC Boxing Hall of Fame. Hurd is also a former regional Golden Gloves champion who may be remembered in the amateur ranks for an outstanding bout with D'Mitrius Ballard at the 2011 Golden Gloves semi-finals. Hurd lost the bout but rose in stature during that contest. Hurd fought and won his last amateur bout on August 31 at Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center.
Rivers and Hurd will join four more members of the Beltway Rookie Class of 2012 who are slated to be on this card -- DC welterweights David "Day-Day" Grayton (1-0, one KO) and Harold "Sweet Lee" Parker (2-1, two KO's), DC heavyweight Danny "Smooth" Kelly (1-0, one KO) and DC-born, Baltimore-based flyweight Tyrieshia "Baby Girl" Douglas (1-0, one KO).

Palmer Park, MD lightweight Kevin Rivers, Jr. and Hillcrest Heights, MD light heavyweight Jarrett Hurd join what is already a loaded class of 2012 by making their maiden voyage into the pro ranks on this card. Rivers was a multi-time regional Golden Gloves champion and made numerous trips overseas in competition. Rivers was named the Outstanding Amateur of 2009 by the DC Boxing Hall of Fame. Hurd is also a former regional Golden Gloves champion who may be remembered in the amateur ranks for an outstanding bout with D'Mitrius Ballard at the 2011 Golden Gloves semi-finals. Hurd lost the bout but rose in stature during that contest. Hurd fought and won his last amateur bout on August 31 at Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center.
Rivers and Hurd will join four more members of the Beltway Rookie Class of 2012 who are slated to be on this card -- DC welterweights David "Day-Day" Grayton (1-0, one KO) and Harold "Sweet Lee" Parker (2-1, two KO's), DC heavyweight Danny "Smooth" Kelly (1-0, one KO) and DC-born, Baltimore-based flyweight Tyrieshia "Baby Girl" Douglas (1-0, one KO).

'Too Sharp' Johnson Named to Showtime Broadcast Team!

International Boxing Hall of Famer and DC sports legend Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson has been named to the Showtime Boxing Broadcast team and will serve as an expert analyst this Saturday, September 8 on the network's coverage of the title bout for the vacant WBC Super Lightweight championship between Lucas Matthysse and Olusegun Ajose.
The bout will be shown at 9 PM ET from the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. The co-feature will be a 10-round contest between J'Leon Love and Ramon Valenzuela. The original main event, a junior welterweight title bout between champion Randall Bailey and challenger Devon Alexander was scratched because Bailey suffered an injury.
The former three-time world champion is not a rookie to broadcasting as he has served as an expert analyst on many boxing telecasts in the Washington, DC area over the years. One of his broadcast partners will be Al Bernstein who was in the same IBHOF 2012 induction class with Johnson. The other member of the team will be Mauro Ranallo, who is known for his work on Showtime's Strikeforce MMA series.

Sharmba Mitchell To Be Inducted Into Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame!
Mitchell, a native of Takoma Park, MD, (57-6, 30 KO's) started his career in 1988 shortly after turning 18 and won his first 31 bouts and an NABF lightweight title. The streak included notable wins over former world champions Rafael "Bazooka" Limon and Rocky Lockridge. The Limon victory was definitely notable because Limon pulled Mitchell's trunks down during the bout. In Mitchell's next bout, he took a playful precaution to avoid that happening again by wearing suspenders on his trunks as he came into the ring.
Mitchell's winning streak was halted by back-to-back knockout losses in 1994 to future world champions Leavander Johnson and Stevie Johnston. Mitchell then moved up in weight to compete as a light welterweight and won his next 11 bouts earning him his first world title shot on October 10, 1998. Mitchell defeated Moroccan Khalid Rahilou in Bercy, France by 12-round unanimous decision to win the WBA World Light Welterweight title.
Mitchell successfully defended the title four times including twice in DC. On February 6, 1999 at the Convention Center, Mitchell won a 12-round unanimous decision over veteran Pedro Saiz. Two months later on April 24, 1999, Mitchell won a 12-round majority decision at the MCI (now Verizon Center) over fellow Beltway Boxer Reggie Green.
Mitchell lost the title and injured his knee in a title bout against Kostya Tszyu on February 3, 2001 in Las Vegas, NV. The bout was stopped in the seventh round. Mitchell would later win an interim IBF Junior Welterweight title but would lose an opportunity to gain the IBF title outright to Tszyu in a rematch on November 6, 2004 in Phoenix, AZ. Mitchell would face and lose to Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Paul Williams before retiring in 2006.
Mitchell is part of an impressive class that will be inducted into the Maryland Sports Hall of Fame. Legendary Baltimore Colts quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas will be honored posthumously. Other members of this year's class include champion female golfer Carol Mann, former NBA player and current Atlanta Hawks general manager Danny Ferry (who played his high school basketball at DeMatha), jockey Mario Pino and two All-American lacrosse players, Jim Kappler (Maryland) and Michael Federico (Johns Hopkins). Long-time University of Maryland Football and Basketball Play-By-Play man Johnny Holliday will receive the John Steadman Lifetime Achievement Award named after the legendary Baltimore sportswriter.

King Drops Unanimous Decision in Pennsylvania!
Cambridge, MD welterweight Dontre "Pound For Pound" King lost a six-round unanimous decision to Juan "The Beast" Rodriguez, Jr. of Union City, NJ this past Friday night at the Mount Airy Casino and Resort in Mount Pocono, PA. The scores of 60-54 and 59-55 (twice) made it seem like the bout was a blowout for the undefeated Rodriguez. However, according to ringside reports, King made things tough for Rodriguez especially in the sixth round when he rocked him with a right hand. Rodriguez was able to recover to win the bout.
This was the second time King (6-12-2, two KO's) has faced Rodriguez(10-0, four KO's). King lost a four-round unanimous decision in February of 2010 in Philadelphia PA. Also, this was the third time that King faced a boxer named "Juan Rodriguez." King drew with Haymarket, VA's Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez in a six-round contest in July of 2010 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.

Undefeated Forestville, MD junior middleweight Alantez "Sly Aza" Fox returns to action on Saturday, September 22 as he takes on fellow undefeated boxer Frank Galarza of Brooklyn, NY in an eight-round bout for the vacant USA New York State Junior Middleweight title. The bout will be held at the Resorts World Casino in Queens, NY.
The New York title is not a state title in the strictest sense of the definition. Many years ago, the NY title was considered a world title, although that is not the case at this point.
Fox (7-0, three KO's) has not fought since winning a four-round unanimous decision over Fitzgerald Johnson on February 17 in Nutley, NJ. Galarza (7-0, four KO's) has scored TKO's in his last three bouts. Neither man has fought in an eight-round contest before.
