A. Peterson Battles in Texas March 12!
When undefeated DC lightweight Anthony Peterson travels to Texas on the weekend of March 12, it could prove to be a very big weekend. ESPN.com's Dan Rafael is reporting that Peterson (29-0, 19 KO's) will make his return to action on Friday, March 12 in Grapevine, TX in a 10-round bout against Juan Ramon Cruz of Puerto Rico (16-7-1, 12 KO's). Peterson has only fought once since injuring his knee in August of 2008, winning a 10-round unanimous decision against Luis Antonio Arceo on August 15, 2009.
Should Peterson win on March 12, he may travel to the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX the next evening to witness the matchup between Humberto Soto and David Diaz for the vacant WBC Lightweight title -- that's the co-feature on the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey card. Top Rank representative Carl Moretti told ESPN.com that a Peterson victory on the 12th would make him the mandatory challenger for the winner of Soto-Diaz, possibly in June.
In an interesting bit of irony, Edwin Valero vacated the WBC Lightweight title for a possible bout against Peterson's brother, Lamont.

Baltimore Hosts Fundraiser for Joe Gans Statue!
How's this for trivia? The first African-American boxer to hold a world championship was a Beltway Boxer. His name was Joe Gans, also known as "The Old Master. For nine years (1900-1909), Gans ruled the lightweight division. Boxrec.com lists his record as 138-10-15 with 96 KO's, however a recent biography of Gans claims there are many more bouts and victories that need to be recorded.
However, Gans has never received the honors and accolades that have been due him. Especially since it took almost a hundred years before another Baltimore boxer (Vincent Pettway) won a world title.
There will be a fundraiser held this Friday night, February 26 that looks to change that. The event will be held at the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards in downtown Baltimore from 8 to 11 PM. Funds from the event will go towards the creation of a wax statue to honor Gans. Tickets for the event are $50 for General Admission and $100 for VIP tickets. VIP tickets allow you to spend some time with some of the many celebrities that are slated for the event.
The Celebrity lists includes Showtime Boxing commentator Al Bernstein, Clayton Le Boeuf, star of the NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street (which was set in Baltimore) Beltway Boxing legends Vincent Pettway and William Joppy are slated to be there along with members of the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Colts.
Also, Colleen Aycock, the co-author of the Joe Gans biography (cover is pictured above) will be there and she must be commended for her work on bringing Joe Gans's name back to prominence. She has been a frequent guest on ESPN 1300's Ballroom Boxing Report with Scott Wagner and Scotty Crouse and her passion for this project is something to be admired.
For event ticket sales, please contact Whitney Edmonds, (410) 727-1539 ext 3033.

Golden Gloves Wrap-Up -- First Round!
Hope you enjoyed the updated results live from the Washington Golden Gloves at ther Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center in Palmer Park, MD. I was limited as to how much I could type so I wanted to give the results quickly. I apologize for the short notice on the live blogging but this was a test run for the March 6 card at the Patriot Center. It worked even better than I hoped, so this may be a more regular feature of the cards that I am able to cover. This may not happen for every card, but I will try to do this as much as I can.
Now, here's the wrap-up:
Junior Division:
8 years, 60 pound championship: Salvador Bravo (Langdon Rec) defeats Joshua Hill (D-Block, District Heights, MD) Good opening bout, Bravo started very quickly.
8 years, 65 pound championship: Kyron Curry (UMAR) defeated Kobe Moore (Main Street Gym). Curry won despite a strong, vocal fan presence from Salisbury, MD who came to support the Main Street Gym boxers.
9-10 years, 65 pound championship: Sean Veazey (Baltimore Boxing) over Byron Hill (D-Block). Veazey lived up to his "Speedy" nickname and now has a local Golden Glove title to go with brother Joey's National Silver Gloves medal.
9-10, 80 pound championship: Da'Nardo Johnson (Kentland) over Jamere Jones (Frederick Fight Club). Johnson did a nice job in keeping Jones at bay and landed some good shots inside.
13 years, 85 pound championship: Martez Small (Dream Team) RSC-1 Corey Moore (Main Street Gym). Small made short work of his opponent in this one for the first RSC (Referee Stops Contest) of the evening.
14 years, 119 pound championship: Devonte Tolbert (Tony's Gym) RSC-3 Gregory Taylor (Hillcrest). Tolbert was dominant in this contest, eventually wearing down Taylor.
15 years, 165 pounds: Darren Brown (Benning Park) defeats Taquane Nance (NOMIS). Good matchup in this one.
Novice Division:
125 pounds: Nygel Gass (BAA) RSC-3 Peter Rodriguez (Upton). Novice division action got off to a good start with this one. Gass was very solid in this contest.
132 Pounds: Jonathan Baxter (Tony's Athletic Club) over Onyeikachi Nouka (Round One). The bout of the night. Both men had a chance to win this one -- there was a lot of ebb and flow.
141 Pounds: Gregory Wright (Baltimore Boxing) defeats Luis Guzman (Club One). Another strong contest. I thought Guzman might have pulled this one out but Wright was very good in this one.
141 pounds: Johnny DaSilva (Round One) over Omar Burke (Upton). DaSilva is very tall and used that height very effectively.
152 pounds: Quinton Taylor (Tony's Athletic Club) RSC-2 Joseph Vidalis (Baltimore Boxing). Taylor was just too strong in this one.
201+ pounds: Roderick Porter (NOMIS) defeates Christopher Kane (Baltimore Boxing). Awkward bout with Porter landing more than Kane, but not by much.
201+ pounds: Jeremy Williams (Keystone Boxing) RSC-2 Oscar Rojas (Young Titans, Columbia, MD). The night ended on a very competitive note with Williams winning over a very game Rojas.
Three scheduled bouts ended in walkovers:
14-15, 112 pounds: Jonathan Rodriguez (Upton) medical walkover Zachary Curry (UMAR)
14-15, 152 pounds: Carl Harper (Sugar Ray Leonard Center) W/O Austin Flowe (Hillcrest)
141 pounds (Novice): Maiwak Dagoot (Jeff Gordon MMA) W/O Joseph Iobbi (Upton)
The next round is Saturday, February 27 at the Sugar Ray Leonard Center. The Open Division may start that night. I will get the bout sheet sometime next week. Hope to be blogging live, although I may be a little late getting to the venue because I have a basketball game to work that afternoon in Baltimore.

L. Peterson to Face Valero in Summer Bout; Battle Could Happen in DC!
Lem Satterfield of AOL Boxing Fanhouse is reporting that Lamont Peterson is slated to fight WBC Lightweight champion Edwin Valero in June or July. Washington, DC is one of the two possible sites for the bout and the bout could end up on either HBO or Showtime.
Peterson (27-1, 13 KO's) is coming off an unsuccessful title bid against WBO Junior Welterweight champion Timothy Bradley last December. However, Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum, who promotes Peterson and Valero, told Satterfield that Peterson's performance was worthy of another high-profile bout.
"As far as Peterson is concerned, it's a high profile fight that gets him back into the mix after the loss to Bradley. This is because he lost in the ring, but he didn't lose in the court of public opinion," said Arum. "Lamont Peterson fought a very courageous, gutty fight, it's just that the guy, on that night, was better than he was."
Valero (27-0, 27 KO's) last fought on February 6 and scored a 10th round knockout over Antonio DeMarco. Valero will be moving up to 140 pounds for the bout. The WBC considers Valero a "champion in recess" which means he can still hold his title while taking a non-title bout. There will be an interim championship bout on March 13 between Humberto Soto and David Diaz in Arlington, TX.
Satterfield adds that there are a couple of issues that need to be resolved involving Valero. This is from Satterfield's article:
One stems from a DUI last May, which resulted in the champion's being denied a U.S. visa pending the successful completion of an alcohol education program.
The other is the stigma from brain surgery Valero received as the result of a 2001 motorcycle accident that caused a blood clot later revealed during an MRI.
Cleared to fight by a Venezuelan doctor following successful surgery that removed the clot, Valero still was placed on indefinite medical suspension by the New York State Athletic and later banned by most athletic associations which supported the NYSAC's move.
"Valero's MRI is completely clean now, and as far as the Visa, we'll have to talk to the Washington, D.C., commission," said Arum.

March 20th Card Unfolding!
The Baltimore Pro Boxing card slated for Saturday, March 20th at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore will feature two East Coast Title bouts and a number of bouts that Beltway Boxing fans want to see. Here's a quick rundown of the scheduled card.
The main event will be a 10-round contest for the East Coast Middleweight title as Baltimore's Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow (19-2-2, seven KO's) will take on Bedford, VA's Scott "Cujo" Sigmon (8-1, three KO's).
The co-feature is another 10-round contest for the East Coast Junior Middleweight title -- undefeated James "Keep 'Em Sleepin'" Stevenson of Baltimore (12-0, 10 KO's) battles Fluvanna, VA's George "Wartime" Rivera (11-4, four KO's).
In an eight-round encounter, undefeated Baltimore welterweight Emmanuel "Transformer" Taylor (4-0, four KO's) will battle veteran Doel Carrasquillo of Lancaster, PA (12-14-1, 10 KO's). The bout will be Taylor's first scheduled eight-round encounter.
In a six-round rematch bout, Baltimore heavyweight "The American Dream" Mike Dietrich (12-1, six KO's) faces the only man that has defeated him -- Wes Taylor of Atlanta, GA (7-15-1, seven KO's). In their last outing on April 18, 2008 at the Pikesville Armory, Taylor scored a third-round knockout over Dietrich.
There are also some solid four-round bouts on the card. Ferndale, MD heavyweight "The American Child" Nick Kisner (1-0) will face Baltimore heavy Kevin "The Journeyman" Johnson (3-3, two KO's) whose debut victory came over Kisner's father, Danny.
Chantilly, VA middleweight Zain "The Tiger" Shah (2-0, two KO's) will battle Omar Sims of Baltimore (3-2-3, one KO) in another four-rounder. Also, the card will mark the return of undefeated Alexandria, VA lightweight Todd "White Lightning" Wilson (6-0, one KO) as he takes on DC veteran Ron "Teflon" Boyd (6-10, two KO's).
Also, DC heavyweight Maurice "Freight Train" Byarm (6-0, four KO's) is slated to be on this card, against an opponent TBA.
We'll talk more about this card in the weeks to come.

Weigh-in for March 6 Card Held at Tyson's Corner Center; Addition to BATB Post-Fight Comes March 6!
In one of the more innovative ideas I've come across in a while, the weigh-in for the Saturday, March 6 card at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA will be held on Friday, March 5.
The location for the weigh-in will be Tyson's Corner Center and will also have the look of a fashion show as the boxers will down a red carpet runway wearing clothes made by some of the sponsors of the event. The weigh-in will start at noon and is indeed, open to the public.
Also on March 6, I plan to post live on BATB from the Patriot Center after every bout. Blooger.com now allows me to do this, so if the connection is strong, I will be posting.
After the card, we will have the BATB Post-Fight Wrap-Up show and there will be a way for fans to participate. Starting with the March 6 show, I will be reading a "Question of the Show" which will come from you, the fans. If I read your question on the show, you will receive a t-shirt courtesy of our show's sponsor -- UndisputedBrand.com.
Please send your questions about the Beltway Boxing scene to beltwayboxing@hotmail.com Please put your name, address and t-shirt size with your email marked "Question of the Show."
One word of advice -- please do not use this forum as a way to bash a particular boxer. That will guarantee your question will not be read.

Beltway Boxers: Send Links to Websites And Fan Pages!
A poster sent in a very good question concerning how to follow their favorite boxers in other ways than just following their boxing matches. This leads to something I have been wanting to do for a while. A number of Beltway Pros have websites and/or fan pages on either MySpace or Facebook. I ask now that you send those links to my email address:
beltwayboxing@hotmail.com please put "Fan Page" in the header.
I will compile a list and added them to the links page on this site. Do not post your links here. Please send them to my email address. Thanks.
This is especially true with MySpace accounts since I don't have a MySpace account.

Corley Knocked Out in California!
Former WBO Junior Welterweight champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley was knocked out in the fifth round by contender Freddy "El Riel" Hernandez last night in front of a nationally-televised ShoBox audience at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, CA.
According to Francisco Salazar of Fightnews.com, a very competitive, good action fight ended suddenly when Hernandez laid out Corley with a huge right hand. Time was 1:48.
Corley is now 36-13-1, 21 KO's while Hernandez, ranked number 14 by the WBC, is now 28-1, 19 KO's.
“I got caught, simple as that,’’ Corley said. “It happens to the best. Instead of me going bing, bing, bing (punches) and moving out of range, I went bing, bing, bing and stood up and got caught with a clean shot. Until then, I was frustrating him and fighting my fight.
“But I’m not going anywhere. As soon as I can return to the gym, I will. I’m definitely going to fight again.’’

World Boxing Federation Names Cassandra White Promoter of the Year!
"After a number of shows where Babie Girl Productions head Cassandra White showed she was a good promoter, tonight she proved she is a GREAT promoter." -- BATB after October 24th card at Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
Apparently, there were others who felt the same way about Cassandra White after that show -- which featured Henry "Sugar Poo" Buchanan winning the World Boxing Federation (WBF) All-Americas Super Middleweight title. The WBF has announced that they have named Cassandra White its Promoter of the Year for 2009.
White has promoted a number of WBF title bouts in her career, including the Kreshnik Qato victory at Howard University's Burr Gymnasium in DC back in December of 2008. But according to a WBF Official, it's White's love for the sport that led to this honor.
"She loves boxing and she cares for the individual boxer's well-being," said Jack Crider, vice president for US Events for the WBF. Cassandra's the type of promoter the sport needs to bring it back to its former prominence. She truly deserves this award."
The next card for Babie Girl Productions will be on Saturday, April 2 at the Washington Convention Center. Due to the impending snow this weekend, the official card announcement party that was scheduled for this Saturday, February 6will be held on Saturday, February 20 at Hogates on the Waterfront in Southwest Washington. We'll be talking with White about this award and her upcoming card later this week.

HBO Boxing Documentary Uncovers Beltway Angle!
I mentioned this on the last BATB Post-Fight Wrap-Up show, but it bears repeating. The acclaimed HBO documentary "Assault in the Ring" is now out on DVD and there is a special feature on the DVD that gives this tragic story a local angle.
For those who haven't seen this superb documentary, filmaker and former boxing agent Eric Drath looks back at one of the most tragic incidents in the history of the sport -- The 1983 bout between undefeated prospect Billy Collins, Jr. and journeyman Luis Resto held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Resto won the bout but after the gloves were checked, no padding could be found. The bout was later changed to a no contest. The battered Collins never fought again and later died in a car accident at the age of 22. Resto and trainer Panama Lewis were sent to prison. Resto was banned from boxing permanently. Lewis was never allowed to work a corner again, although he can still train boxers in his gym. Twelve years after this tragedy, Lewis worked with Simon Brown in preparation for his bout against Vincent Pettway at the USAir Arena.
The DVD has a special feature that presents the local angle through DC welterweight Robert "Boo Boo" Sawyer. In the early days of ESPN's boxing coverage, the network had a welterweight tournament. Sawyer won the tourney and became the ESPN Welterweight champion. In his second defense of that title on December 16, 1982, Sawyer faced Resto in Atlantic City, NJ. Resto won the title by 12th round knockout. Sawyer (whose final record was 14-16, nine KO's) was never the same after that bout, winning only three of his last 13 fights before retiring in 1996.
In the special feature, Sawyer travels to New York to confront Resto saying that Resto's gloves were tampered in their bout, which was two contests BEFORE Resto fought Collins. What takes place is riveting, fascinating and in the end, heartwarming. Every boxing fan should get this DVD immediately.

March 6 Patriot Center Card Loaded With Beltway Talent!
The ICE Promotions Boxing card slated for Saturday, March 6 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA is loaded with talent from the Beltway region and a few of the matches have Beltway Boxers facing each other.
We already know about the main event for the card -- the 12-round WBC USNBC Junior Middleweight title bout between champion Jimmy Lange of Great Falls, VA (31-3-2, 21 KO's) and "The White Tiger" Chase Shields of Houston, TX. (29-3-1, 14 KO's)
The co-feature will be very interesting as well. Undefeated Arlington, VA lightweight "The Mongolian Mongoose" Bayan Jargal will take on Louie Leija of San Antonio, TX in an eight-round contest. Jargal (14-0-2, nine KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision over Guadalupe Diaz on December 11 in Reno, NV but the last time Jargal appeared at the Patriot Center, he had to settle for a draw against Richard Lee Hall on September 26.
Leija (21-14-1, 15 KO's) comes from a boxing family. His cousin, Jesse James Leija, was a two-time world champion. Louie Leija has fought a who's who of competitors in the lightweight division including Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Ben Tackie, Derrick Gainer and Emmanuel Augustus. However, Leija took a nine-year absence from the sport from 1999-2008 and has not won a bout since 1999 -- he is currently on a seven-bout losing streak.
In another eight-round contest, Fort Valley, VA junior welterweight Andrew "The Doo Man" Farmer will take on Laurel, MD's Ikem "The Warrior" Orji in an eight-round contest. Farmer (13-1, seven KO's) is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision over Ryan Belasco on October 16 at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore. Farmer would also like to change his fortunes at the Patriot Center -- the site of his only pro loss. Farmer lost a four-round majority decision to Ken Humphreys on December 9, 2006.
Orji (5-2, one KO) lost a six-round split decision to Issac Suarez on May 8 in Philadelphia, PA. Orji has lost two of his last four but his two wins have come in intra-Beltway bouts against Ron Boyd and Ramondo Elliott.
Laurel, MD heavyweight "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae returns to action in his first scheduled six-round contest as he takes on Theron Johnson of Chicago, IL. McRae (5-2, three KO's) has lost two of his last four, including a four-round majority decision loss to Bernell Stewart on December 20 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD. Johnson (3-2) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision loss to Tor Hamer on August 26 in New York City.
Undefeated Haymarket, VA welterweight Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez returns to action in a four-round contest against Glenarden, MD's Damian Butler. Rodriguez (3-0, three KO's) is coming off an injury and he hasn't fought since his last appearance in the Patriot Center, winning a first-round TKO against Dwartney Wortham on May 2. Butler (0-2) lost a four-round unanimous decision to Jesus Caro on October 3 in Lincoln, RI.
Two other All-Beltway bouts round out the card. Dumfries, VA cruiserweight "Cold Blood" Patrick Budd will take on Ellicott City, MD's "Big Mac Attack" Robert McConnell in a four-round encounter. Budd (2-1, one KO) is coming off his first pro loss -- a four-round unanimous decision to Charles Hayward on December 4 in Philadelphia, PA. McConnell (4-3, two KO's) lost by third-round TKO to Kevin Johnson on April 30 at Martin's West in Woodlawn, MD.
Also, Lawrence Jones, a junior middleweight fighting out of Reston, VA (2-2, one KO) will battle Vincent "The Beast" Batteast of Severn, MD (1-1-1). Jones has not fought since being stopped in the first round by Shawn Estrada on November 29, 2008 in Ontario, CA. Batteast is coming off a four-round unanimous decision over Allen Perkins on December 11 at the Shipley Arena in Westminster, MD.
