Golden Gloves Wrap-Up -- First Round!

Hope you enjoyed the updated results live from the Washington Golden Gloves at ther Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center in Palmer Park, MD. I was limited as to how much I could type so I wanted to give the results quickly. I apologize for the short notice on the live blogging but this was a test run for the March 6 card at the Patriot Center. It worked even better than I hoped, so this may be a more regular feature of the cards that I am able to cover. This may not happen for every card, but I will try to do this as much as I can.

Now, here's the wrap-up:

Junior Division:

8 years, 60 pound championship: Salvador Bravo (Langdon Rec) defeats Joshua Hill (D-Block, District Heights, MD) Good opening bout, Bravo started very quickly.

8 years, 65 pound championship: Kyron Curry (UMAR) defeated Kobe Moore (Main Street Gym). Curry won despite a strong, vocal fan presence from Salisbury, MD who came to support the Main Street Gym boxers.

9-10 years, 65 pound championship: Sean Veazey (Baltimore Boxing) over Byron Hill (D-Block). Veazey lived up to his "Speedy" nickname and now has a local Golden Glove title to go with brother Joey's National Silver Gloves medal.

9-10, 80 pound championship: Da'Nardo Johnson (Kentland) over Jamere Jones (Frederick Fight Club). Johnson did a nice job in keeping Jones at bay and landed some good shots inside.

13 years, 85 pound championship: Martez Small (Dream Team) RSC-1 Corey Moore (Main Street Gym). Small made short work of his opponent in this one for the first RSC (Referee Stops Contest) of the evening.

14 years, 119 pound championship: Devonte Tolbert (Tony's Gym) RSC-3 Gregory Taylor (Hillcrest). Tolbert was dominant in this contest, eventually wearing down Taylor.

15 years, 165 pounds: Darren Brown (Benning Park) defeats Taquane Nance (NOMIS). Good matchup in this one.

Novice Division:

125 pounds: Nygel Gass (BAA) RSC-3 Peter Rodriguez (Upton). Novice division action got off to a good start with this one. Gass was very solid in this contest.

132 Pounds: Jonathan Baxter (Tony's Athletic Club) over Onyeikachi Nouka (Round One). The bout of the night. Both men had a chance to win this one -- there was a lot of ebb and flow.

141 Pounds: Gregory Wright (Baltimore Boxing) defeats Luis Guzman (Club One). Another strong contest. I thought Guzman might have pulled this one out but Wright was very good in this one.

141 pounds: Johnny DaSilva (Round One) over Omar Burke (Upton). DaSilva is very tall and used that height very effectively.

152 pounds: Quinton Taylor (Tony's Athletic Club) RSC-2 Joseph Vidalis (Baltimore Boxing). Taylor was just too strong in this one.

201+ pounds: Roderick Porter (NOMIS) defeates Christopher Kane (Baltimore Boxing). Awkward bout with Porter landing more than Kane, but not by much.

201+ pounds: Jeremy Williams (Keystone Boxing) RSC-2 Oscar Rojas (Young Titans, Columbia, MD). The night ended on a very competitive note with Williams winning over a very game Rojas.

Three scheduled bouts ended in walkovers:

14-15, 112 pounds: Jonathan Rodriguez (Upton) medical walkover Zachary Curry (UMAR)

14-15, 152 pounds: Carl Harper (Sugar Ray Leonard Center) W/O Austin Flowe (Hillcrest)

141 pounds (Novice): Maiwak Dagoot (Jeff Gordon MMA) W/O Joseph Iobbi (Upton)

The next round is Saturday, February 27 at the Sugar Ray Leonard Center. The Open Division may start that night. I will get the bout sheet sometime next week. Hope to be blogging live, although I may be a little late getting to the venue because I have a basketball game to work that afternoon in Baltimore.
