Johns, Fox Brothers Headline July 18 Card At Sphinx Club!

A number of young Beltway prospects will compete on the next Keystone Boxing Promotions card on Saturday, July 18 at the Sphinx Club in Washington, DC.

The main event on the card will feature undefeated Fort Washington, MD super bantamweight "Monster" Marq Johns will take on Karl Garcia of Miami, FL by way of Bayamon, Puerto Rico in a six-round contest.

Johns (6-0-1, five KO's) is coming off a third-round knockout victory over Bryan Perez-Navarez at the last Sphinx Club card on March 14.  Garcia (4-5-1, one KO) lost a four-round unanimous decision to Rafael Espinoza on May 30 in Hollywood, CA.

Garcia will face an undefeated opponent for the seventh straight contest and the ninth time in his career.  One of those undefeated boxers Garcia faced was Beltway Boxer Kevin Rivers, Jr. who stopped Garcia in the sixth round on October 24.

The card will also feature something that hasn't happened in DC in almost three years -- two brothers competing on the same card.  The "Twin Towers" of the Beltway -- Alantez "SlyAza" Fox and Myke "The Professor" Fox -- will both compete on the card.  Older brother, 6'5" Alantez (15-0-1, five KO's) last fought on April 17 and scored a second-round TKO over Franklin Gonzalez on April 17 in Uncasville, CT.  6'3" Mykal (6-0, two KO's) fought on the March 14 Sphinx Club card and stopped Thomas Deleon in the first round.

The last time two brothers competed on the same card was when  Harold and Joshua Parker competed at the Washington Convention Center in August of 2012.

Also scheduled to be on this card are Renaldo "Misunderstood" Gaines, Albi "The Golden Goat" Sadikaj, Patrick Harris, Devar "The Warrior" Ferhadi, Chris "The Rock" Warden and the debuting Shynggyskhan Tazhibay.

On the women's side, Millersville, MD 132-pounder Amelia Moore lost her semifinal bout to two-time world champion and Youth Olympic Games gold medalist Jajaira Gonzalez of Glendora, CA by second-round TKO.  The win was Gonzalez's third straight stoppage victory.  Moore will take on Stalacia Leggett of San Diego, CA in a consolation bout on Saturday.

Wade Wins Split Decision In Washington!

Largo, MD middleweight Dominic "Lights Out" Wade won a  10-round split decision over former world champion "King" Sam Soliman of New South Wales, Australia Friday night at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, WA in front of a nationally-televised (ShoBox) audience.

The bout was awkward and somewhat close throughout as Soliman seemed to throw himself at Wade throughout the contest.  Wade managed to knock down Soliman in the fourth round.  The punch looled more like a push as Soliman was rushing in.  However, referee Jack Reiss ruled it a knockdown.

The knockdown proved to be the difference on the scorecards as Wade won by scores of  97-92 and 95-94.  Soliman won a card by the score of 96-93.

Wade, who was ranked number 14 by the WBC and number 12 by the WBA going into the contest, remains undefeated at 18-0, 12 KO's.  Soliman's record drops to 44-13, 18 KO's.

A related ratings note:  The Beltway has three middleweights ranked among the top 15 in the world by the WBC and the WBA.  Tony Jeter has moved up to number 11 in the WBC and is number 15 in the WBA.  Antoine Douglas, who will compete in a ShoBox main event on Friday, July 17, is ranked number 14 by the WBC.

Ayi "Bruce Lee" Bruce, a super welterweight who now competes out of Silver Spring, MD, was no match for undefeated prospect Erickson "The Hammer" Lubin of Orlando, FL in the co-feature.  The native of Ghana was dropped twice before the bout was stopped at 2:05 of the first round.  Bruce is now 23-10, 15 KO's while Lubin is 11-0, eight KO's.

This will be a pretty big few days coming up for the folks at the No Xcuse Boxing Gym in Capitol Heights, MD.  On Saturday, June 27, the gym will host a "Summer Boxing Bash" amateur card.  The card was originally supposed to be held at the gym but the event has been moved to the Oxon Hill Boys and Girls Club located at 7711 Livingston Road in Oxon Hill, MD.

Russell, Moore Advance To Semifinals Of Olympic Trials Qualifier!

Only two Beltway amateurs remain in contention at this week's Olympic Trials Qualifier in Colorado Springs, CO.  One boxer was a well-known name before the event. The other may have had a name established during this event.

Gary Antuanne Russell of Capitol Heights, MD advanced to the semifinals of the 141-pound competition with a 3-0 decision win over Richardson Hutchins of Brooklyn, NY.  Russell will now face Kevin Ceja-Ventura of Omaha, NE in the evening session tonight.  Russell is the youngest brother of 2008 US Olympian Gary Russell, Jr. who is now the WBC Featherweight champion and Antuanne Russell is a former National Golden Gloves champion so his name comes as no surprise.

However, Amelia Moore of Millersville, MD may have put her name on the map with her performance thus far in this competition.  On Thursday, Moore advanced to the semifinals of the 132-pound division with a 2-1 decision over Dalia Gomez of Oakland, CA.  Moore has a tough task in the afternoon semifinals as she will square off with Jajaira Gonzalez of Glendora, CA who won a gold medal at the recent Youth and Junior World Championships in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

Also on Thursday, Jalonte Cole of Burke, VA lost his quarterfinal contest at 132 pounds by a 3-0 decision to Adam Castillo of Lubbock, TX while Franchon Crews of Baltimore dropped a 2-1 decision to rival Tika Hemingway of Brackenridge, PA at 165 pounds.

A. Peterson, Antonio Russell Added To Thurman-Collazo Undercard July 11 in Tampa!

Two Beltway Boxers have been added to a card on Saturday, July 11 at the Sundome in Tampa, FL that features a nationally-televised world title bout.

Locals Anthony Peterson of DC and Antonio Russell of Capitol Heights, MD will appear on the undercard against two opponents that Beltway fans may be familiar with.  Peterson (34-1, 22 KO's) will take on Ramesis Gil (8-11-5, five KO's) of the Dominican Republic in a 10-round matchup..   Peterson was slated to fight on June 12 in Chicago.  However, his opponent did not make weight.  Peterson has not fought since August of 2014.

Gil has lost seven straight contests including a spirited bout against Mike Reed on September 7, 2013 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD that was named the Beltway Boxing Bout of the Year.  Reed won that bout by sixth-round TKO.

After only two bouts, Russell (2-0, two KO's) will leap into the six-round category when he takes on Jaxel Marrero of Puerto Rico (1-5-1) in a bantamweight contest.  Russell scored a first-round knockout of Brandon Garvin on May 23 in Boston, MA.  Marrero lost a four-round unanimous decision to Jantony Ortiz on April 4 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.  Prior to that bout, Marrero lost a four-round unanimous decision to Marq Johns on January 17 at the Washington Convention Center in DC.  Marrero has also gone six rounds with Diego De La Hoya, losing a unanimous decision.

Both bouts will be on the undercard of the WBA Welterweight championship contest between titleholder Keith Thurman and former champion Luis Collazo. That bout will be shown on ESPN2.  The undercard bouts may be shown online on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.

Nelson, Salinas Win By Unanimous Decision In Woodlawn!

(photos by Mike Greenhill)

Virginia Beltway Boxers Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson and "The Bolivian Queen" Jennifer Salinas scored unanimous decision victories in the featured bouts during the Shawstyle Productions/Shabazz Brothers card at Martin's West in Woodlawn, MD.

Nelson of Ashburn, VA (right) won a 10-round unanimous decision over Kita "Ready-Made" Watkins of Fort Worth, TX to capture the vacant Universal Boxing Federation Middleweight title.  The championship is Nelson's ninth in her career.

The bout was a rematch of a contest the two had on March 20 at Martin's West.  Nelson won the first bout easily with a shutout 10-round unanimous decision.  Nelson had to work a little harder to get the win in the rematch.  Watkins used more movement and defended herself much better against Nelson's right hand.  However, Nelson showed her champion's heart at the midway point of the bout when she decked Watkins with a right hook to the chin in the fifth round. Nelson was able to control the bout the rest of the way to score the win.  Judge Brent Bovell scored the bout a shutout for Nelson at 100-89 while John Gradowski saw the bout 98-91 and David Greer scored it 99-90.  This was the first time in four bouts that Nelson lost a round on a judge's scorecard.

Nelson remains undefeated at 15-0-3, one KO while Watkins drops to 7-13, one KO.

The co-feature saw Salinas of Manassas, VA win an eight-round unanimous decision over a very game Jasmine "Ms. Redd" Clarkson of Cedar Hill, TX.

Clarkson gave Salinas difficulty early with her southpaw style and movement.  However, Salinas was eventually able to match Clarkson's speed and increase her own activity.  As the bout wore on, Salinas was able to connect more frequently.  Judges Gradowski and Greer scored the bout 78-74 while Judge Kenny Chevalier scored the bout 79-73.

Salinas is now 16-3, four KO's while Clarkson is 2-3.

There were two pro debuts on the card.  Lightweight Eric "El Torito" Hernandez of Leesburg, VA won a four-round unanimous decision over Mason Wickett of Milwaukee, WI.

After getting comfortable in the first round, Hernandez was able to land solid right hands to the body as well as left and right uppercuts to Wickett's face.  To Wickett's credit, he stayed in the bout and weathered the storm but Hernandez's offense was the determining factor in the contest as he won by shutout (40-36) across the board.  Wickett is still looking for his first win as he is now 0-10.

The other pro debut saw Randallstown, MD middleweight Jeffrey "Gladiator" McCalla score a first-round knockout over Carlos Dixon of Dallas, TX.  McCalla, the younger brother of veteran middleweight Cecil McCalla, rushed Dixon from the opening bell and pressured him with solid bouts.  Eventually, McCalla dropped Dixon with a left hand to the face.  Dixon beat the count but McCalla swarmed Dixon in a neutral corner long enough for referee Kenny Chevalier to stop the bout at 2:50.  Dixon's record falls to 1-4-1, one KO.

Ashburn, VA lightweight Seth "Killer B" Billups scored two knockdowns en route to a third-round stoppage of Christopher Russell of Amarillo, TX.  Billups landed a counter right hand to drop Russell to one knee late in the first round.  Billups then landed a left hand to the body and a left uppercut to the head in the third round to end Russell's evening at 28 seconds.

Billups remains undefeated at 6-0, five KO's while Russell falls to 3-13-1, two KO's.

In one of the fastest knockouts in Maryland state history, Brooklyn, NY super lightweight Ivan "The Beast" Baranchyk needed just three seconds to stop Angel "El Fuego" Figueroa of Lorain, OH.

The bell rang, Baranchyk landed a straight left hand to the body, a crushing left hook to the head, Figueroa fell and the bell rang again.

Baranchyk, a native of Belarus, remains undefeated at 7-0, six KO's.  Figueroa's record evens at 3-3-1.

Because Baranchyk boxes out of New York, his knockout will not qualify for Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year.  However, Devin Butcher's first-round knockout of Walter McCray certainly is in the running.  After pressuring his opponent from the opening bell, the Baltimore native Butcher stopped McCray of Lynchburg, VA with a crushing right hand that sent McCray crashing to the canvas and his mouthpiece flying over my ringside location.  Referee Brent Bovell counted to 10 and the bout was over at 55 seconds.

With the win, Butcher's record is now 4-0, two knockouts while McCray is 0-2.

In the curtain-raising contest, Baltimore welterweight Kevin "The Scarecrow" Womack, Jr. stopped James "Trouble" Gooding of Tampa, FL at 2:29 of the second round.  Womack dropped Gooding twice with right hands before the bout was stopped.

Since losing three straight bouts in 2014, Womack is unbeaten in his last four contests (2-0-2, two KO's).  Womack's overall record is now 6-5-3, four KO's.  Gooding falls to 1-8-1, one KO.

We have the call of the Nelson-Watkins rematch and our Post-Fight Wrap-Up here:
