Capitol Heights, MD 141-pounder Gary Antuanne Russell clinched a spot in the USA Boxing Olympic Trials by winning a semifinal contest at the Qualifier Friday evening in Colorado Springs, CO.
Russell won a 3-0 decision over Kevin Ceja-Ventura of Omaha, NB in the semifinals. Russell will take on Rahim Gonzales of Sylmar, CA in the championship round on Saturday. This will mark the third straight Olympic Trials that will feature a Gary Russell. Gary Russell, Jr. won a berth on the Olympic team in 2008 and Antonio Russell competed in the 2012 Olympic Trials.
On the women's side, Millersville, MD 132-pounder Amelia Moore lost her semifinal bout to two-time world champion and Youth Olympic Games gold medalist Jajaira Gonzalez of Glendora, CA by second-round TKO. The win was Gonzalez's third straight stoppage victory. Moore will take on Stalacia Leggett of San Diego, CA in a consolation bout on Saturday.
