One bout in the Novice Division has fallen out -- Christian Bratton of Greenbelt, MD has won the 132 Pound title by walkover.
Some unfinished business from the Washington Championships two weeks ago. We mentioned that UMAR Gym won the Junior Team title and NOMIS captured the Novice trophy. We did not know who won the open team trophy at that time. No Xcuse took the team trophy in the open division in a tiebreaker. Both No Xcuse and Headbangers had two open champions, however, No Xcuse had two more boxers compete in title bouts.
We will be getting underway very shortly.
Ballard Weighs 167 For Bout At Barclays!
D'Mitrius Ballard is the second Beltway Boxer to weigh in for the card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY that will take place on Saturday night. Ballard tipped the scales at 167 pounds -- the same as his opponent, Marcus Clay of Baton Rouge, LA.
Clay (2-5) should be familiar to Beltway Boxing fans -- he has fought three times in the region losing to Immanuwel Aleem, suffering a no-contest against Jerry Odom and, in his last bout, dropping a six-round unanimous decision to Frankie Fillipone.
Showtime's telecast begins at 9 PM ET, however, they are coming from multiple locations, so I'm not sure what the order will be.
Closer to home, we'll begin the live blogging from the Regional Golden Gloves in Waldorf, MD about 8 PM tonight!

This bout was on a charity fight night card that had former heavyweight champions Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield as special guests. According to TulsaWorld.com, this is the final edition of this event after 22 years because of decreasing popularity. Maybe the folks in Tulsa should see how DC does this style of event.

Beltway Boxers Promoting Future Cards!
Tony Jeter (Left) and Ty Barnett at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD. (Photo by Juan Marshall, ProAm Fight Talk)
The Beltway has three boxers who are currently working dual roles as boxers and promoters. Two of those boxers have cards coming up in the very near future.
Stevensville, MD middleweight Tony "Mo Better" Jeter has his card on Saturday, May 11 at Club One Fitness in Millersville, MD. Jeter will headline the show defending his WBC Fecarbox Middleweight championship against Victor Hugo Correa. This will be Jeter's fourth self-promoted pro card. Jeter has put together numerous amateur shows.
DC junior welterweight Ty Barnett returns to action on his first self-promoted card on Saturday, June 15 at the Washington Convention Center.
Jeter and Barnett talked to BATB about their upcoming cards and why they are promoting their own shows.
The third local boxer to actively promote currently is Venroy July who promoted his first show in March and will be putting together another card in the future.
One thing I should say, these men are doing just about everything for their shows -- promoting, matchmaking and trying to get the word out on their shows.
Jeter will be a guest on NewsChannel 8 Sports Talk on Tuesday at 9 PM ET.

Hurd Wins Unanimous Decision in Main Event!
Accokeek, MD junior middleweight "Swift" Jarrett Hurd won a six-round unanimous decision over the very awkward Greg Hackett of Philadelphia, PA.
Much like Hackett's bout against Alantez Fox last month, Hurd had some difficulty keeping Hackett from charging in. However, Hurd definitely landed the harder and more telling blows.
Hurd got the victory with scores of 60-54 (twice) and 59-55.
That's our coverage for now. We will have our post-fight wrap-up shortly. For now, good night from the Show Place!
Reed Makes Short Work of Clay!
In the time it took to write the previous post, Waldorf, MD junior welterweight Mike "Yes, Indeed" Reed scored a first-round knockout over the woeful Cassius Clay. The bout ended when Reed landed a left to the body.
Clay retreated to a corner and dropped to his knees and spit his mouthpiece out. Referee Kenny Chevalier reached 10 and the bout was over at 31 seconds.
Reed is 2-0, two KO's. Clay is 0-8. Main event now: Jarrett Hurd vs. Greg Hackett.
Reed Faces Cassius Clay in Co-Feature!
Rivers Earns Third-Round Stoppage!
Palmer Park, MD junior lightweight Kevin "K-Smoov" Rivers, Jr. stops Carlos Alcala of Hillside, IL at 1:39 of the third round. Rivers threw some solid body shots and uppercuts throughout the contest that dropped Alcala twice in the second. A strong flurry forced the bout to be stopped at 1:39 of the third round.
Rivers is now 6-0, five KO's. Alcala loses his pro debut.
Intermission is upon us. If you go to the BATB page on Spreaker.com you can hear interviews with Devar Ferhadi and Yurii Polishchuk along with two Beltway Boxers who will be fighting and promoting cards on May 11 and June 15 respectively -- WBC Fecarbox Middleweight champ
Tony Jeter and Ty Barnett.
Davis Scores Second-Round TKO!
Gervonta "Rambo" Davis, sporting a newly-colored brand of orange hair, has scored a second-round TKO over the debuting Jacob Ninow of Wheaton, IL.

Davis is now 2-0, two KO's.
Up next: Kevin Rivers, Jr. vs. Carlos Alcala.
Ferhadi Wins Tough Unanimous Decision!
In what was a very exciting contest, Devar "The Warrior" Ferhadi wins a four-round unanimous decision over a very game PJ Cajigas of Franklin Park, IL. Ferhadi did a nice job going to the head, however, the body shots Ferhadi has become known for in his young career were few and far between. Cajigas dropped Ferhadi right at the end of the third round but the knockdown was ruled after the bell.
Ferhadi wins by scores of 40-36 (twice) and 39-37.
Ferhadi is 3-0, two KO's while Cajigas is 0-1-1.
Up next, Gervonta Davis vs. Jacob Ninow.
Murphy Wins Majority Decision!
Capitol Heights, MD cruiserweight Mario Murphy won a workmanlike four-round majority decision over Danville, VA's Damion Reed. Murphy showed some strong defensive skills, however he didn't have the power to keep Reed at bay throughout the contest. Judge Paul Wallace scored the bout even, 38-38 while Kenny Chevalier and John Gradowski scored the bout for Murphy, 39-37 and 40-36, respectively.
Murphy is now 2-0 while Reed is 2-11-1, one KO.
Coming up: Devar Ferhadi in middleweight action against PJ Cajigas.
Polishchuk Stops Winbush In One!
Yurii Polishchuk makes short work of Demetrius Winbush using a solid flurry of punches to drop him midway through the first round. Winbush didn't really want to battle much after that and the bout was eventually stopped at 2:36 of the first.
Next -- cruiserweights Mario Murphy and Damion Reed.

Polishchuk-Winbush Opens Show Place Card!
Good Evening From The Show Place!
The first item we should tell you about is the bout that will not be on the card. The reason given as to why it got cancelled is, quite frankly, one of the stupidest reasons I have ever heard. Also, the reason given, apparently, falls indirectly on me.
The first bout was slated to feature two debuting heavyweights -- Deverine Miner of Capitol Heights, MD and Glenn Thomas of East Stroudsburg, PA. Thomas was originally slated to take on the Ecuadorian heavy Ytalo Perea but Peres had to back out of the fight.
Thomas was offered another bout and took it on one condition -- that he be put on the "A" side of the card. This means he would be fighting out of the red corner as if he was a hometown boxer. Again, Thomas was slated to fight Miner who actually IS a hometown boxer.
Now, here's where I come in. When I saw the weights, I did what I normally do -- put the hometown boxers on the left side or "A" side, regardless of what corner they actually are in. I was unaware of any deal made to the contrary. The scale watch was posted on Fightnews as well as Boxrec, with Thomas on the "B" side.
When Thomas saw this, apparently, he went crazy, leaving nasty messages everywhere and then backed out of the fight.
After all is said and done, the real reason the bout is off may be that Miner weighed in at 296 1/2, not to mention 6'9" and Thomas is just 237.
Be that as it may, we'll be ready to start here in a few minutes.
Here is further information on the crazy situation involving the Miner-Thomas scheduled bout:
Fox Now Slated to Battle in Oklahoma April 25!
However, give Fox's promotional group, Boxing 360, credit for working to find Fox opponents in a short period of time. Fox (10-0-1, four KO's) will take on late replacement Keith Collins of St. Joseph, MO (4-22, two KO's). No word yet on how many rounds the bout is scheduled for.

No word yet on how the stoppage took place in the scheduled eight-round co-feature but the time of the TKO was 1:49. Kennedy has now lost four of his last five bouts and his record is 7-5-1, three KO's. Perez is now 10-2-1, four KO's.

May 4 Frederick Card Postponed!
The Hardwork Promotions card slated for Saturday, May 4 at the Frederick Fight Club in Frederick, MD has been postponed.
BATB has learned that a combination of boxer injuries and bout cancellations led to the postponement. No word yet on a new date for the card.
'Black Ice' Cummings Signs With Atlanta-Based Promotional Company!
Cummings (17-5-1, 13 KO's) has been in some outstanding bouts in his nine years as a pro. The former Maryland Super Middleweight champion has faced three former world champions -- William Joppy, Keith Holmes and Montel Griffin -- and was involved in the 2009 Beltway Boxing Bout of the Year when he scored a dramatic ninth-round TKO over Demetrius Davis to win the Maryland Super Middleweight title on May 24 at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore.
Cummings has not been active since his two bouts with Joppy in November of 2010 and March of 2011 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. The first bout went to a 10-round draw and Joppy won the second by 10-round unanimous decision.

Another Update on April 20th Show Place Card!
Medical issues have forced some last minute changes to the Keystone Boxing card on Saturday, April 20 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD.
The main event has to be changed because Alantez Fox's opponent, Djolevi Ballogou, has unnamed medical problems and can't appear on the card. The same holds true for Mario Murphy's opponent, Devon Mosley. Murphy's new adversary is Damion Reed from Danville, VA (2-10-1, one KO). BATB has just learned that Fox is now officially off the card.
One of the definite changes is that Jarrett Hurd's bout against Greg Hackett has been upgraded to a scheduled six-round contest -- Hurd's first in his young pro career. This bout will now be the main event on the card.
Two more bouts have been added to the card. Arlington, VA welterweight Yurii Polischuk will make his pro debut on this card as he will take on Alexandria, VA's Demetrius Winbush, who is also debuting. Polischuk is still slated to be on the May 18 card in Washington, DC.
Capitol Heights, MD heavyweight Deverine Miner will also take his first step into the pro ranks as he battles the debuting Glenn Thomas of Chicago, IL.

Undefeated DC welterweight Dusty Harrison will headline a nationally televised card at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Sports Complex on Saturday, May 18.
The card, called "Champion Class" will have bouts televised on the EPIX Network, marking the first US-based boxing broadcast for the network. The fact that the card is being held at UDC marks a special significance because Harrison, who will turn 19 three days after this card, will begin studies at the university in June. No word yet on the opponent for Harrison (14-0, eight KO's) who won a six-round unanimous decision over Jonathan Garcia on April 12 in Dover, DE.
One bout has already been signed for the card and is slated to be one of the featured TV bouts. The bout marks the return of Upper Marlboro, MD heavyweight "Big" Phill Brown as he takes on undefeated Natu "The Truth" Visinia of Lakewood, CA. This will be the first bout for Brown (6-1, three KO's) since May 31, 2007 when he lost a six-round majority decision to Mike Sheppard in Glen Burnie, MD. Visinia (8-0, seven KO's) makes his return after an almost two-year absence. Visinia scored a fourth-round TKO over Kourtney Boden on May 31, 2011 in Santa Monica, CA.
A number of Beltway Boxers are slated to compete on the card including Kevin "K-Smoov" Rivers, Jr., Mike "Yes, Indeed" Reed, Gervonta "Rambo" Davis, Devar "The Warrior" Ferhadi, Greg Newby and the debuting Yurii Polischuk.

The card is slated to begin at 6 PM ET with the telecast starts at 8 PM. Details on the card are slated to be announced next week.
Here are brief interviews with Dusty and Buddy Harrison:

A. Douglas Maintains Busy Schedule; Harrison Receives Praise From World Champion; Salisbury Results!
Burke, VA middleweight Antoine "Action" Douglas will continue to be a busy man, according to his promotional group.
Douglas (6-0, four KO's) scored a second-round TKO over Juan Zapata on April 12 in Whitehall, NY. Vito Mielnicki of GH3 Promotions, who co-promotes Douglas along with Greg Cohen Promotions, says Douglas will head right back into action very soon.
"We are keeping Antoine active and he will be on the ShoBox undercard on May 10 in Miami, OK," Mielnicki said in a press release.
No word yet on Douglas's opponent for that contest.
Also on April 12, DC welterweight Dusty Harrison won a six-round unanimous decision over Jonathan Garcia at Dover, DE. The win impressed a very noted member of the boxing community -- world Super Middleweight champion Andre Ward.
"Dusty has tremendous talent and some natural attributes that are not common in many of the younger boxers such as patience, Ward said. "He has a great team around him and the potential to be very successful in this sport."
As for the results in Salisbury from Friday night, I have yet to receive full results. I have received bits and pieces on the card but nothing complete. I need complete info. Thanks to those who have posted results in the comments section.

Noted Maryland Referee and Judge Ray Klingmeyer Passes!
Long-time Maryland referee and judge Ray Klingmeyer passed away on April 5 at the age of 88.
The native of Baltimore, MD was an amateur who won 70 bouts and turned professional in 1946. Klingmeyer had a pro record of 39-8-3 (31-11-3, with 14 KO's, according to BoxRec) before his career was halted in 1951 by an arm injury suffered on a construction site.
In 1977, Klingmeyer joined the Maryland State Athletic Commission as a judge and referee. Klingmeyer was a judge at the first pro bout I ever attended as a boxing fan -- Muhammad Ali's world heavyweight title defense against Alfredo Evangelista on May 16, 1977 at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD.
Klingmeyer would add refereeing to his duties in 1978 and was the third man for hundreds of bouts in the Beltway area. Two were very notable in my career -- One was on July 3, 1990, a nationally televised (USA Network) battle at the old Washington Convention Center for the USBA Flyweight title between DC's Louis "Heidi" Curtis and Pedro Feliciano. Curtis, a member of the 1976 US Olympic team, was the defending champion but lost the title because of a nasty welt over his left eye (reminiscent of what would happen to Hasim Rahman against Evander Holyfield years later)
The other notable contest would be one of Klingmeyer's last as a referee -- April 29, 1995 -- when Baltimore's Vincent Pettway would defend his IBF Junior Middleweight title against two-time former world champ Simon Brown at "The Beltway Brawl" at the renamed USAir Arena (formerly Capital Centre). Klingmeyer would retire from refereeing in 1996 because of failing eyesight.
Klingmeyer is a member of the Maryland Boxing Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Bess.
Klingmeyer brings back fond memories of my "Boxing Spotlight" days as a reporter where he was a part of the officiating crew in Maryland that included men like Leo Schumacher, Larry Barrett, Bill Holmes, Jodi Wingfield and Karl Milligan. I always liked the way Klingmeyer would stop a contest on a TKO. It would always look like he was saying to the defeated boxer "Son, believe me, it's best" as he walked him back to the corner. Ray Klingmeyer was a very nice, softspoken man and may he rest in peace.
