Tougher Day For Beltway Amateurs At US Nationals!

At the US Nationals in Fort Carson, CO, Beltway amateurs stumbled a little bit during the second round of competition, but a number of locals moved on to the next round.

The evening session is still going on but three local 132-pounders advanced into the next round. Kevin Rivers, Jr. of Landover, MD won a 19-9 decision over Sonny Frederickson of Toledo, OH while Gary Antonio Russell of Capitol Heights, MD decisioned Joshua Jones of Philadelphia, PA 17-9. Also, Patrick Harris of Hyattsville, MD won his bout by a 20-12 decision over Kenneth Thomas, Jr. of Indianapolis, IN.

At 152 pounds, 2010 National Golden Gloves champion David Grayton of DC won by walkover against Lavelle Hadley of Youngstown, OH.

The locals had mixed success at 165 pounds. Russell Gaskins of DC won a 30-25 decision over Puol Both of St. Paul, MN, 30-25. However, D'mitrius Ballard of Temple Hills, MD lost a 15-10 decision to Jesse Hart of Philadelphia, PA and Jeremy Trussell of Baltimore fell to Mark Hernandez of Fresno, CA, 22-16. Demond Nicholson of Laurel, MD won his bout at 165 but it went to number of punches against Charles Cue of Jacksonville, FL 11-11 (32-30).

Also, Hasim Rahman, Jr. won his bout by RSC against Keith Busch of Chandler, AZ in the 201 pound competition.

The morning session gave some of the Beltway Boxers troubles. Malik Jackson of DC lost by walkover to Joseph Gonzalez of Houston, TX at 108 pounds. In the 123-pound class, Gervonta Davis of Baltimore lost by disqualification to Joet de Jesus Gonzalez of Glendora, CA.

Also at 123-pounds, Kenneth Wesley of Germantown, MD lost a 29-17 decision to Mario Ayala of Sacramento, CA while 201+ pounder Danny Kelly fell to Laron Mitchell of San Francisco, CA, 10-6.

The Beltway did have some winners during the morning session. In the 141-pound division, Antonio Magruder of Suitland, MD and Michael Reed of Waldorf both advanced. Magruder won an 18-11 decision over Kameron Jones of Rowlett, TX while Reed, the 2011 National Golden Gloves champion, captured a 21-8 decision over Kevin Watts of Lancaster, CA.

Also advancing at 141 was Cortland Perkins of Baltimore who won a 27-21 decision over Danson Rellez of Mountain View, HI.

The local 178-pounders also advanced today. Jerry Odom of Temple Hills, MD won a 22-19 decision over the hometown boxer, Jeffrey Spencer of Fort Carson. DC's Gregory Newby scored one of the few RSC's of the day as he stopped Luai Barakat of Headland, AL.

Pavlik Declines April Bout With Sigmon!

Apparently, Kelly Pavlik does not want to fight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon after all. Telling the Youngstown (Ohio) Vindicator newspaper that there was no contract signed, Pavlik has decided to take a bout on March 17. The bout with Sigmon was slated for April 14.

“There was never a fight scheduled for sure against him!” Pavlik wrote in his text. “He was the one that went to some boxing site! (Guess he means this one.)

“I wish I could fight the kid — he is horrible!”

I've talked to Sigmon since the word got out on this and he assured me that a contract had indeed been drawn up with Top Rank for this contest.

Writing on his Facebook page Monday night, Sigmon said, “I sadly regret to inform everyone that 37-2 Kelly Pavlik not to fight me. That’s right, he is afraid to fight [an] unskilled, protected ‘club’ fighter.”

Beltway Amateurs Begin Work at USA Nationals!

A number of Beltway Amateurs started work in the 2012 USA Nationals in Fort Carson, CO. Action got underway on Sunday and a number of local 165-pounders were in action.

In an all-Beltway bout, D'Mitrius Ballard of Temple Hills, MD defeated Marquis Moore of Fort Washington, MD, 18-17. Russell Gaskins of DC stopped Cory Barnes of Montebello, CA.

Demond Nicholson of Laurel, MD won a 19-8 decision over Scott Deering of Bridgeton, MO. Also, Antoine Douglas of Burke, VA decisioned Tavion Bush of Pensacola, FL, 19-8.

In the 201+ pound division, DC's Danny Kelly won a 19-9 decision over Ryan Jones of Janesville, WI.

Now, let's catch up on today's action. In the afternoon session, the 132-pounders took center stage. Landover, MD's Kevin Rivers won a 17-14 decision over Ray Lugo of Tampa Bay, FL. Gary Antonio Russell of Capitol Heights, MD won a 23-13 decision over Eduardo Garza of Rowlett, TX.

Patrick Harris of Hyattsville, MD decisioned Anthony Burgin of Atco, NJ, 20-16.

The morning session showcased the 141-pounders. Cortland Perkins of Baltimore won a 24-15 decision over Burim Beqiri of Kentwood, MI. Michael Reed of Waldorf, MD captured a 19-16 victory over George Rincon of Carrollton, TX. Antonio Magruder of Suitland, MD advanced by stopping Derrell Williams of San Antonio, TX.

The event continues through March 3.

Mitchell Faces Witherspoon April 28 In Atlantic City On HBO Telecast!

Undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell announced on his Facebook page that he will be facing Chazz "The Gentleman" Witherspoon of Paulsboro, NJ on Saturday, April 28 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.

The bout will be a 10-round co-feature bout on the Bernard Hopkins-Chad Dawson rematch and will be televised by HBO, marking Mitchell's second straight appearance on the network. Mitchell (24-0-1, 18 KO's) is coming off a solid second-round TKO win over Timur Ibragimov on the Capital Showdown card at the Washington Convention Center. Mitchell has knocked out his last nine opponents.

Witherspoon (30-2, 22 KO's) has won his last four bouts by stoppage since his December 2009 ninth-round TKO loss to Tony Thompson . That bout, ironically, was also at Boardwalk Hall. Witherspoon began his pro career in the Beltway area with his first two bouts scoring knockouts at the Washington Convention Center and Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD. In fact, three of Witherspoon's first eight bouts were in Glen Burnie.

Jeter Wins UBO Title By Unanimous Decision!

Tony Jeter gets redemption with an eight round unanimous decision over Jose Felix. Scores were 78-73, 80-71 and 79-72. Jeter wins the vacant UBO Middleweight title and is now 13-3-1, nine KO's. Felix is now 11-12-2, four KO's. Post-Fight Wrap-Up is,hopefully, coming up shortly. Until then, Good Night from Millersville!

Eighth Round is Tough one!

Both men use everything possible to get through this round, some of it not so legal. This might be a very close fight on the judge's cards. This one was hard to describe by words, so I decided to give a blow-by-blow attempt on this one.

Round 7 Gets Ugly!

In what has been a brutal bout, things turned ugly in the seventh when Felix complained of being hit by a low blow. Felix then lifted Jeter and takes him down to the canvas. Ugly round.

Felix Puts On Pressure in Sixth Round, but Jeter Does Not Fold!

Great sixth round. Felix landed his best punches of the night so far. A brutal left hand stuns Jeter. Jeter lands a low blow and he is warned by Chevalier. Jeter landed a solid double left hook and comes back strong in the latter stages of the round. Anybody's round.

Jeter-Felix II Round 5!

The bout was momentarily stopped for a cut around Jeter's right eye. Doctors let it go. Nice round for both men. Felix might have eeked that one out with some solid combos.

Halfway Through!

A battle of two veterans in this one. Jeter's landing nice combinations but Felix is hanging on like a veteran should. Felix is getting in a couple of shots and they have made Jeter step back. Jeter has done just a little more so far.

Jeter-Felix II Better than Jeter-Felix I!

After three rounds, the rematch of this contest is definitely more competitive. Jeter has been repeatedly warned by Chevalier to not hit behind the head. If it happens again, there will be a point taken away. Jeter has landed the harder blows and combinations so far.

Jeter-Felix Round 2!

Both men forget about their jabs and throw power shots. Both men are warned for kidney shots and shots behind the head. Jeter is a little more accurate in the second. Jeter 10-9.

Jeter-Felix II Getting underway! Round 1!

Both men circle each other and Jeter about a minute in, lands a solid right hand and drops Felix, but referee Kenny Chevalier calls it a slip claiming both men get their legs tangled. Later, Felix drops Jeter with a short right hand. That is ruled a knockdown.

Jeter then returns the favor with a right hand of his own. Jeter wins the round but the war is just beginning.

Quarles Wins Unanimous Decision!

Brandon Quarles wins a tough six-round unanimous decision over Omar Sims. Judge Ken Chevalier scored the bout 58-56, John Gradowski had it 59-55 and Steve Rados had a shutout for Quarles, 60-54. Thinking Sims didn't get enough credit on Rados's card. Quarles remains undefeated at 9-0, two KO's while Sims is 6-4-4, three KO's.


Main event -- Tony Jeter-Jose Felix II is next for the UBO Middleweight title.

Bout Ends in Three-Minute Slugfest!

A great bout ends with both men slugging it out for three solid minutes. Both did more missing than landing, but it looked like Quarles landed more shots in the exchanges. Quarles may have won this bout but it should be a close score!

Close Fifth Round For Quarles-Sims!

Very close round for both boxers. I'm tempted to call it even since neither man had a clear advantage. Quarles was slightly more effective from the outside than Sims was from the inside. Quarles, 10-9.

Quarles Back to Basics In Round 4!

Round four saw Quarles get back to his gameplan in the fourth round. Quarles moved, used his jab and forced Sims to chase him. Sims was not nearly as aggressive as he had been the previous two rounds. Great bout so far. Quarles, 10-9.

Power vs. Speed in Round 3!

Clear case of Quarles's speed against the power of Sims. Quarles is using his hand speed but Sims has been able to walk through his punches. Sims has thrown the more effective punches and is fighting his fight right now. Sims, 10-9.

Quarles-Sims Round 2!

Sims has more success in the second as he became more of the aggressor. Sims got Quarles to trade more in close and Sims landed very nicely with uppercuts. Quarles tried to hit from outside , but Sims did a nice job closing the distance. Sims, 10-9.

Quarles-Sims Round 1!

Quarles started off with nice hooks to the head and bod in the early part of the round. Sims is trying to make a phone booth bout out of it but Quarles is doing well going inside and outside with his shots. Quarles, 10-9.

Quarles-Sims is Next!

The co-feature bout is next --Brandon Quarles and Omar Sims is in the ring. Slated for six rounds. By the way, it looks like the Sherman Artis-Allen Perkins bout is off. No reason given.

July Scores TKO On Cuts In Second Round!

Venroy July scored a second-round TKO over Zeferino Albino when Albino suffered a cut over his right eye as he was caught with numerous lefts from July throughout the contest. The bout was stopped at 2:20 of the second. July remains undefeated at 10-0-2, four KO's while Albino is 4-14-3, two KO's. Now an intermission.

Solid round for July. Very poised, using his jab and the southpaw is landing big left hands when he can. Albino doesn't want to mix it up and is trying to land shots from the outside. It's not working.

Franklin With A Nice Comeback in the Last Two Rounds!

Stephen Franklin landed some big shots in the third and fourth rounds. Both men traded very well with huge shots down the stretch. Scores are coming in and Lee Snow wins by unanimous decision with all three judges scoring the bout, 39-37. Snow wins his first pro bout and is now 1-2. Franklin actually has a previous win and is now 1-8-1, one KO.

Golden Boy Promotions Working on June 30 Card at Verizon Center, Says ESPN.com!

It looks like whatever problems Golden Boy Promotions may have had with the District of Columbia Boxing and Wrestling Commission back in December will not keep the company from the idea of staging another card in the Nation's Capitol.

ESPN.com's Dan Rafael is reporting that Golden Boy is working on a card that would be scheduled for June 30 at the Verizon Center. The card would feature Beltway Boxers Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell and "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr., despite both boxers having bouts scheduled for April. If the card does come together, it would mark the FIRST time that Russell has competed in his home area as a pro!

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told Rafael that his company is working on a number of cards including the May 19 rematch between Lamont Peterson and Amir Khan that is slated for Las Vegas. However Schaefer says that it is good for the sport for more cities to be involved in the big fight mix.

"There are a lot of fights in Vegas coming up and it's OK to spread it around, and it's important for the sport to have fights outside of Las Vegas. You look at a place like Los Angeles or Washington, D.C., or New York or places in Texas like El Paso or San Antonio or Houston. I think it's important to have fights in these towns on a regular basis. I think it helps the sport and the [television] ratings as well."

Sigmon, Mitchell To Appear on High-Profile Cards in April!

Two Beltway Boxers are slated to appear on some high-profile cards during the month of April. One of the two comes as a big surprise but it may prove that being a busy boxer can pay dividends.

BATB has learned that Lynchburg, VA super middleweight and WBC USNBC Super Middleweight champion Scott "Cujo" Sigmon will face former world champion Kelly Pavlik on Saturday, April 14 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV on the undercard of the Yuriokis Gamboa-Brandon Rios bout. Sigmon tells BATB that this will be a 10-round contest and he actually took less money to avoid having this bout be an eight-rounder, which is, according to Sigmon, what the Pavlik camp preferred. No word yet on what the Pavlik camp is saying about this.

Sigmon has already fought twice this year and fought seven times in 2011.

Two weeks later, undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell will be in a nationally-televised HBO bout on Saturday, April 28 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. This will be a 10-round contest. No opponent named yet, but names like Chazz Witherspoon have been thrown into the mix. This bout will be one of the co-features on the Bernard Hopkins-Chad Dawson card.

Brigade Boxing Championships Are This Friday at The Naval Academy!

A long-standing tradition celebrates its 71st anniversary on Friday, February 24. The United States Naval Academy has its Brigade Boxing Championships at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, MD. This is when the Navy boxers battle and represent their brigades. It is a very unique and interesting event. This is also an event that you can see for free!

There will be 10 bouts. You can park at the football stadium at Rowe Blvd and Taylor Ave. Use the blue entrance and ride the free shuttle to Alumni Hall or park outside the gate and walk onto the Academy but you will need a picture ID to enter the gate.

The bouts begin at 7 PM.

Millersville Card Shapes Up for Saturday!

The card heading to Club One Fitness in Millersville, MD is starting to shape up. We already know about the main event between Tony "Mo Better" Jeter (12-3-1, nine KO's) and Jose Felix (11-11-2, four KO's). The matchup is for Felix's USBU Middleweight title and the vacant UBO Middleweight title.

We've also talked about the six-round co-feature between undefeated Alexandria middleweight Brandon Quarles (7-0, two KO's) and Baltimore's Omar "The Machine" Sims (6-4-3, three KO's).

Here's how the rest of the card shapes up at this time. Baltimore welterweight Emmanuel "Tranzformer" Taylor looks to bounce back from his first loss as he takes on "The White Tiger" Angel Rios of Bronx, NY in a six-round contest. Taylor (14-1, 10 KO's) lost an eight-round split decision to Prenice Brewer on November 10 at the Fight Night card in Washington, DC. Rios (9-10, six KO's) has lost eight straight decisions but four of those losses have come to undefeated fighters. Rios has never been knocked out in his pro career.

Undefeated Suitland, MD cruiser Venroy "Hard Work" July returns to action in a four-round contest against veteran Zeferino Albino of Philadelphia, PA. July, the 2011 BATB Co-Prospect of the Year (9-0-2, three KO's), is coming off a first-round knockout over Jason Pauley on November 19 in Upper Marlboro, MD. Albino (4-13-3, two KO's) is another tough veteran who has infrequently pulled off a big win, like his second-round victory over John Poore in January of 2011.

There will be two guys looking for their first win as Baltimore middleweight Lee Snow (0-2) takes on Martinsburg, WVA's Stephen Franklin (0-6). Another Beltway middleweight -- Sherman Artis, Jr. of Severn, MD -- will face Allen "Pitbull" Perkins of Frederick, MD in a four-round contest. Artis (2-0) scored victories over Snow and Franklin. Perkins (1-5) is looking to break a five-bout losing streak.

Undefeated Brooklyn, NY middleweight Dushane Crooks (4-0, three KO's) is also slated to be on the card in a four-round contest against an opponent to be determined.

Tyrieshia Douglas to Turn Pro, Says Washington Post!

Baltimore-based 112-pounder Tyrieshia Douglas has informed us through the Washington Post that she plans to turn professional in the very near future.

Douglas, who is from DC, told the Post's Amy Shipley that she does not want to wait another four years "for the politics and all the other stuff."

Sigmon Defends WBC USNBC Title With TKO; Farmer Wins Unanimous Decision; Roy Wins In Return!

Lynchburg, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon made his first successful defense of his WBC USNBC Super Middleweight title with a seventh-round TKO of Nashville, TN's Jonathan "Reid Dawg" Reid Saturday night at the Winchester Armory in Winchester, VA.

The bout was stopped after the seventh round and the win is Sigmon's fifth straight. Sigmon's record is now 21-3, 12 KO's. Reid is now 35-15, 19 KO's.

Also on the card, Front Royal, VA junior middleweight Andrew "The Doo Man" Farmer won an eight-round unanimous decision over deceptively tough Damon Antoine of Akron, OH. Farmer has now won three in a row and is now 16-2, seven KO's. Antoine falls to 9-34-2, four KO's.

Front Royal heavyweight Terry "T-Brick" Roy made his return after a three-year absence. Roy's return was successful as he stopped Benito Fernandez of Spartansburg, SC in the fourth round. Roy's record is now 8-2-2, seven KO's. Fernandez is now 20-18, seven KO's.

Douglas Olympic Bid Falls Short!

There will be no Beltway Boxers appearing on the Women's US Olympic team. The last one to have an opportunity -- Tyrieshia Douglas of Baltimore -- lost in her bid Saturday night to constant foe Marlen Esparza of Houston, TX by a score of 32-17 at the trials in Spokane, WA.

Esparza (112 pounds) joins Queen Underwood of Seattle, WA (132 pounds) and 16-year-old Claressa Shields of Flint, MI (165 pounds) as the first-ever US Olympic Boxing Women's Trials champions. If they can finish in the top eight at the Women's World Championships in China, they will earn berths at the Olympic Games in London.

Guerrero Scores Fourth-Round TKO in Cancun!

Salisbury, MD middleweight Fernando Guerrero knocked out Jason Naugler in the fourth round Saturday night in Cancun, Mexico. The bout was stopped at 2:36 of the round after Naugler took some solid shots.

Guerrero is now 23-1, 18 KO's. Naugler falls to 18-16-1, 11 KO's.

Douglas In Women's US Olympic Semis!

Baltimore's Tyrieshia Douglas has moved into the semifinals of the 112-pound bracket of the Women's US Olympic Boxing tournament. Douglas avenged an earlier loss to Christina Cruz of New York by defeating her 22-14.

Now, Douglas has a real tough task -- she will have to defeat defending 112-pound national champion Marlen Esparza TWICE to gain a spot on the US team. Douglas's first chance will be tonight and if she is successful, they will box again tomorrow.

Sigmon, Guerrero Weigh in at Winchester, Cancun!

Scott Sigmon weighed in at 164 1/2 pounds for his WBC USNBC title defense against Jonathan Reid Saturday night at the Winchester Armory in Winchester, VA. Although the bout was contracted to be fought at a catchweight of 165, Reid tipped the scales at 172.

Sigmon did not ask Reid to lose anymore weight and the bout will go on as scheduled.

Meanwhile in Cancun, Fernando Guerrero tipped the scales at 163 along with his opponent, Jason Naugler.

Fox Wins Unanimous Decision in New Jersey!

Forestville, MD welterweight Alantez "Sly Aza" Fox remained undefeated with a four-round unanimous decision over Fitzgerald Johnson of Asheboro, NC tonight in Nutley, NJ.

All three of the judges scored the bout 39-37 for Fox who is now 7-0, three KO's. Johnson is now 2-6, one KO.

Douglas Heads to Challenger's Bracket Finals; Crews is Eliminated!

Only one Beltway Boxer remains eligible for a berth on the US Olympic Women's Boxing team. That boxer is Tyrieshia Douglas who heads into tomorrow's 112-pound Challenger's bracket finals by virtue of a 31-19 win over Virginia Fuchs of Kemah, TX.

Douglas will now face Christina Cruz of New York City Thursday in a rematch of a bout earlier in the week. Cruz won the first meeting.

But for Franchon Crews of Baltimore, the Olympic dream is over. Crews lost a 23-15 decision to Raquel Miller of San Francisco, CA in the 165-pound bracket and that eliminates Crews from the competition.

Tiera Brown, who trains at the Headbangers Gym in DC. but is out of Florida, is also out as she lost her challenger's bracket semis to Mikaela Meyer of Los Angeles, CA at 132 pounds.

Douglas, Crews Advance in Challenger's Bracket of Women's Olympic Trials; Stevenson Falters!

There are two Beltway Boxers remaining in the Women's US Olympic Boxing Trials in Spokane, WA. Baltimore 112-pounder Tyrieshia Douglas stayed in the competition by scoring the first stoppage of the tournament. Douglas stopped Taversha Norwood of Marietta, GA in the fourth round of their bout.

Meanwhile, 165-pounder Franchon Crews of Baltimore won a narrow 27-26 decision over Tiffanie Hearn of San Diego, CA. This was a battle of national champions in this weight class -- Hearn was champ in 2010, Crews is the reigning national titleholder. The two also met in the Pan American Games box-off with Crews emerging victorious.

DC 132-pounder Asia Stevenson has been eliminated from the competition as she was stopped by 2011 National Golden Gloves champion Mikaela Meyer of Los Angeles, CA in the fourth round.

Also in the 132-pound class, Tiara Brown, a boxer from Florida who trains in DC at the Headbangers gym, won a 12-11 decision over Bertha Aracil.

Tonight, Douglas will take on Virginia Fuchs of Kemah, TX; Brown battles Mikaela Meyer and Crews faces off against Raquel Miller of San Francisco, CA.

February 23 Boxing Card Off, Bouts Moved to Millersville on February 25!

We'll have details on this later this week, but BATB has learned that the United Boxers card slated for Thursday, February 23 at Dubai Nightclub in Baltimore has been called off and portions of that scheduled card will be a part of the Jeter Promotions card on Saturday February 25 at Club One Fitness in Millersville, MD.

We have no official word on which bouts will be a part of the card that already features Tony Jeter facing Jose Felix in a rematch and what should be a very interesting co-feature between Alexandria VA's Brandon Quarles and Baltimore's Omar Sims.

Crews Wins By Walkover Against Shen; Douglas Falls in Semis!

At the Women's US Olympic Boxing Trials in Spokane, WA, Franchon Crews of Baltimore won by walkover against Dara Shen of Alexandria, VA when Shen was injured in last night's bout.

This means Crews will advance to the Challenger's bracket semifinals tomorrow. Meanwhile 112-pounder Tyrieshia Douglas of Baltimore lost her Winner's bracket matchup against Christina Cruz of New York City by the score of 20-15. Douglas now falls into the Challenger's bracket.

The Washington Golden Gloves Championships will be on Saturday, March 24 at the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center in Waldorf, MD at 8 PM. The Regional Championships will be on Friday, April 13 also in Waldorf.

Local Ladies Have Tough Time at Olympic Trials!

Overall, not a good start for our Beltway ladies at the Women's US Olympic Boxing Trials in Spokane, WA on Monday. Only one of the four locals made it to the semifinals of the winners bracket.

Tyrieshia Douglas of Baltimore moved into the 112-pound semifinals with a 34-11 win over Latonya King of Harrison Township, MI. Next up for Douglas later today will be Christina Cruz of New York City, who defeated Virginia Fuchs of Kemah, TX 15-12.

Everyone else struggled Monday and will be in the challengers bracket. And we know that at least one Beltway Boxer will be eliminated from competition after Tuesday's action. That is because in the 165-pound class, both Franchon Crews of Baltimore and Alexandria, VA's Dara Shen lost their winners bracket bouts. Crews fell to the youngest boxer in the tournament -- 16-year-old Claressa Shields of Flint, MI -- 31-19. Shen lost to another Michigan boxer, Andrecia Wasson of Centerline, 34-9.

Barring a reseeding in the challenger's bracket, Crews will face Shen in the challenger's bracket on Tuesday and the loser would have two losses and be eliminated from the tournament.

Meanwhile at 132 pounds, Asia Stevenson of DC lost to N'yteeyah Sherman of Barberton, OH by a score of 42-17. Stevenson will now face Patricia Manuel of Long Beach, CA who lost to Tiera Brown of Lehigh Acres, FL, 18-13.

By the way, Brown trains in DC at the Headbangers Gym where she trains with Stevenson.

Sigmon To Defend WBC USNBC Title Saturday in Winchester, VA!

Talk about not resting on your laurels. BATB has learned that Lynchburg, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon will be defending his WBC USNBC Super Middleweight title -- yes, the title Sigmon JUST won on February 3 in Greensboro, NC -- on Saturday, February 18 on the Left Hook Boxing card at the Cherry Beasley Readiness Center in Winchester, VA.

To make this even more interesting, the opponent for Sigmon (20-3, 11 KO's) will be one of the most experienced boxers that Sigmon has faced. The opponent will be former world title challenger Jonathan "Reid Dawg" Reid of Nashville, TN.

Reid (35-14, 19 KO's) has lost three of his last four bouts with two of the losses and the lone win in that stretch coming at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. Reid lost a bout to fellow Contender-Season one participant Jimmy Lange by a ninth-round stoppage in September of 2009. One bout later, Reid broke a nine-bout losing streak with a six-round unanimous decision over Mike McFail in November of 2010. Reid's last bout was an eight-round unanimous decision loss to George Rivera on September 10.

Reid unsuccessfully challenged William Joppy for the WBA Middleweight title in 2000 and lost by fourth-round TKO.

Four Beltway Boxers Participating In US Women's Olympic Trials!

We head to the final round. The 11th was very similar to previous rounds. Some fans chanting for Galvan. Lange is still patient, but he is not going for the knockout. The fight is over. Curious to hear the feedback on this one!

The scores are a clean sweep for Lange -- 120-108. Lange adds the NABU title to his WBU belt.

Lange is now 38-4-2, 25 KO's. Galvan falls to 27-21-4, 10 JO's.

Lange Has Strong 10th!

A better round for Lange as he landed solid shots in the 10th. Lange ended the round with a great right hand that had Galvan feigning pain as he walked to his corner.

Seventh and Eighth Rounds Contain Gamesmanship!

This is becoming a bizarre contest. Lot of strange games played in the last two rounds. There's holding and hitting as well as running with both guys. Lange is staying poised but sometimes tries to match Galvan. Only on ocassions. Here in the ninth, Galvan landed his best punch of the bout, a right hand. Lange still in control but, it's still a weird bout.

Lange Taking His Time but...

With a guy that is obviously trying to survive, Like Galvan is, shouldn't'you be able to put guys like him away? Lange is pressuring and landing shots. Galvan, however, is going nowhere. Galvan trying to steal round with flurries at the end. We're through six.

Round 4 Straightens Out!

More conventional boxing in fourth. Galvan actually got in some good shots, but Lange is maintaining his poise thus far.

Things Start to Get Crazy In Round 3!

Galvan knows he has no shot of beating Lange, so he is just playing, flurrying during the third round. At one point while Lange's back was turned, Galvan practically tackled him. All Lange so far.

Jabs the big key for Lange as he sets up the right hand. Referee Joe Cooper warning both to watch their heads in close. Truthfully, Lange can potshot from the outside all night.

This one is scheduled for 12. Crisp jabs by Lange. Great body shots against his shorter foe. Late in the round,Lange pandas body shot that put Galvan on his motorcycle, not bicycle. 10-9 Lange.

Stewart-Wyatt Bout Stopped After Accidental Headbutt!

In the ninth round, the title bout between Michael Stewart and Joe Wyatt was stopped because of an accidental headbutt. Most in the crowd weren't thrilled by the bout. They go to the scorecards and:

Stewart wins by majority decision. One judge has it even at 76-76 while two score it 79-73 and 78-74. Stewart is now 49-6-3, 25 KO's . Wyatt falls to 23-3, 15 KO's.

The main event is coming up. Jimmy Lange vs. Ruben Galina.

By the way, they apparently did not score the ninth round of the Stewart-Wyatt bout.

Nelson Wins WIBA Title with 10-round Unanimous Decision!

Nelson wins her second world title with a unanimous decision. Scores were 97-90 and 99-88. Nelson is now 6-0-1. Living is 5-3-1. The second title bout-- Michael Stewart and Joe Wyatt for the vacant WBU Welterweight title is through two. We'll have results after the bout.

Nelson Keeps Pressure Up Through Eight!

I'm just curious as to how frustrated Nelson is that she can't put Living away. Living,to her credit, is throwing more punches and may have gotten some rounds on the scorecards. But again, Nelson's power is the big difference.We head to the tenth and final round.

Another Knockdown for Nelson!

Tori Nelson has not taken a backward step in this bout. She knocked down Vashon Living for the third time in the bout in the fifth round.

Living is giving everything she has, but there is a HUGE power difference in this one. We are now through six.

Nelson Showing No Fear Through Three!

After three rounds, Nelson continues to walk through Living's punches. Nelson scored another knockdown when a right forced Living's glove to touch the canvas. We're now through four and the barrage is continuing. Referee Michelle Myers is starting to take a hard look.

Nelson Starts Power Barrage Early!

In round one, Nelson lands a short right that drops Living. Nelson has a power advantage as she is continually backing Living up. Living is throwing good shots but Nelson is walking through them.

Wilson Scores Knockdown in Sixth Round!

Wilson shows a boatload of heart knocking down Basora in the final round with a right hand. That may be enough but we are awaiting the scores.

Basora starts to amp his offense in round 3 and put Wilson on the outside. Wilson tried to counter but a great round for Basora. Wilson has started to back pedal.

Former WBO Junior Welterweight champ DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley is next to me at ringside. He offered to fight Wilson but he says Wilson turned it down.

We move into the fourth and the bout got ugly. Basora still starting to land.

We are FINALLY Here from the Patriot Center!

After an hour long trip from Baltimore to Fairfax, we are live and ringside from the George Mason University Patriot Center. We did miss one bout -- Baltimore's Kevin Womack, Jr. won a four-round majority decision over Richie Andrews of Staunton, VA. Two judges scored the bout 39-37. Womack is now 3-0, one KO while Andrews is 3-1-3.

Wrapping up in the ring now is the heavyweight debut of Duane Mobley of Upper Marlboro, MD who is battling Dennis Benson of Norfolk, VA. All three judges saw the bout for Mobley. Benson is now 0-2.

Peterson-Khan Rematch Set For May 19 in Las Vegas!

ESPN.com's  Dan Rafael is reporting that there is a signed contract for a rematch between WBA/IBF Super Lightweight champion Lamont Peterson and former champ Amir Khan.

The bout will be held on Saturday, May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

The bout will be the headline contest on an edition of HBO's World Championship Boxing. Attorney Jeff Fried, who represents Peterson and Barry Hunter, Peterson's trainer/manager and father figure, told ESPN.com on Thursday after the deal had been signed.

"It was challenging for a variety of reasons, including some of the post-fight antics undertaken by Khan. But at the end of the day, Lamont and Barry had a singular focus on what is in the best interest in Lamont Peterson and his family, and that is what drove this deal getting done."

"There was a lot of back and forth, but it all ended good in getting this fight done," said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. "I think it's one of the most anticipated rematches. It's the right fight for Lamont and the right fight for Amir, and I'm really excited both parties agreed to do this fight."

Rafael says Peterson accepted the deal from Golden Boy, which handles Khan, for the rematch even though Top Rank's Bob Arum had been wooing Peterson, a promotional free agent, for a fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, which he hoped to put on at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Peterson, who earned $650,000 for the first fight and rejected a $1 million offer for the rematch shortly after the first fight, will make "substantially more than $1 million," Fried said, although he did not divulge the terms.

Guerrero To Battle In Cancun on February 18!

Salisbury, MD middleweight Fernando Guerrero returns to action on Saturday, February 18 when he faces James Winchester of Greensboro, NC at the Grand Oasis Resort in Cancun, Mexico. This will be a bout to be fought at a contracted weight at 164 pounds.

Guerrero (22-1, 17 KO's) bounced back from his first pro loss against Grady Brewer in June of 2011 with a fifth-round TKO over Robert Kliewer on the Capital Showdown card on December 10 in DC. According to Bay Area writer Ryan Maquinana, Guerrero has a new trainer in Ricky Funez and has been training at the Fortune Gym and Robert Garcia's Oxnard Gym in California.

Winchester (12-4, four KO's) has won two straight since his losses to prospects Glen Tapia and Matt Korobov. This bout was originally slated to be on the undercard of Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz, but that bout was postponed until June because Berto suffered an injury.

Changes to February 11 Card in Fairfax!

There are some significant changes to the Saturday, February 11 card at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.

Zain Shah has pulled out of his bout with Harry Joe Yorgey, citing the flu. Yorgey will now face Lawrence Jones (4-5-2, one KO) who fights out of the same LA Boxing gym. Jones will be making his fifth appearance at the Patriot Center. On September 10, Jones won a six-round unanimous decision over Jose Felix.

The rematch between Virginia boxers Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez and Richie "The Rock" Andrews has fallen out as well. Rodriguez is out and Baltimore's Kevin "The Scarecrow" Womack, Jr. is in, marking the second straight undefeated boxer that Andrews has faced. Womack (2-0, two KO's) scored the BATB Knockout of the Year in November 2011 when he stopped Benjamin Olinga in the fourth round at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD.

In other card news, DC Boxing Hall of Fame ring announcer Henry "Discombobulating" Jones will return to announce his 13th Patriot Center card. Also, there will be live music for the first time at a Patriot Center card. Northern Virginia rock band Grand Revival will perform before the card at 6:15 and then play at the after party on the concourse. All fans are invited to the after party.

A number of boxers on the card will make media appearances throughout the rest of the week. Here's the lineup:

TONIGHT -- February 7 -- WBC Female Middleweight champ Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson appears on Sports Talk on NewsChannel 8 with Alex Parker at 9 PM ET.

Wednesday -- February 8 -- WBU Junior Middleweight champ Jimmy Lange will be on ESPN 980's John Thompson Show with Rick "Doc" Walker at approx. 2:30 PM ET.

Lange will be taping a segment with Fox 5 that will be airing later in the week.

Also, Todd "White Lightning" Wilson will join Glenn Harris on NewsChannel 8's Sports Talk at 9 PM ET.

Thursday -- February 9 -- Lange is a guest of the Mike Wise Show with Holden Kushner on 106.7 The Fan at 2:20 PM ET.

THIS JUST IN: Also, there is another regional title added to the main event. Lange and Ruben Galvan will be fighting for the vacant NABU (North American Boxing Union) title as well as Lange's WBU title.

NPR Chronicles Tyreishia Douglas's Road to the Olympics!

National Public Radio (NPR) has a wonderful, revealing profile of Beltway amateur Tyrieshia Douglas who will be heading to the first-ever Women's Olympic Boxing Trials next week in Spokane, WA.

Alantez Fox Returns To Action in New Jersey February 17!

Forestville, MD welterweight Alantez "Tez" Fox returns to action on Friday, February 17 in Nutley, NJ at Nutley High School.

Fox (6-0, three KO's) will take on Fitzgerald Johnson of Asheboro, NC (2-5, one KO) in a four-round contest. Fox last fought on November 3 in Cockeysville, MD and won a four-round unanimous decision over Corey Preston.

'Beltway Boricua' Harrison Headlines March 10 Card at Washington Convention Center!

Undefeated DC weltwerweight "The Beltway Boricua" Dusty Harrison will be in a main event bout for the first time in his young pro career on Saturday, March 10 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in DC.

The 17-year-old Harrison (3-0, one KO) will battle debuting Maryland boxer Josh Rupard in the four-round feature bout. Harrison scored his first pro knockout on the "Capital Showdown" card on December 10th at the Convention Center when he stopped Terrell Davis.

Others slated to be on the card will be the returning DC lightweight Ty Barnett (18-2-1, 12 KO's) who will be fighting in DC for the first time since May of 2007.

Junior middleweight Ivan Ziglar (4-2-1, one KO) is now fighting out of DC and he will make an appearance on this card as will heavyweight Abodurin "Big Bo" Akinyanju (4-2, three KO's) and debuting heavyweight Zakki Scott.

'Cujo' Sigmon Wins WBC-US Title In Greensboro!

Congratulations to Lynchburg, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon who won his first title this past Friday night, February 3. Sigmon scored a third-round knockout over Jimmy Campbell of Indianapolis, IN to win the WBC USA Super Middleweight championship at the Guilford Convention Center in Greensboro, NC.

The win raises Sigmon's record to 20-3, 11 KO's and places Sigmon in the top 15 in the WBC rankings. Campbell's record is listed as 16-5, seven KO's.

Continuing his trend of being the busiest boxer in the region, Sigmon is slated to return to the ring on Saturday, February 18 in Winchester, VA.

Update on February 25th Card in Millersville!

A couple of interesting bouts have been added to the Saturday, February 25th card at Club One Fitness in Millersville, MD.

The six-round co-feature bout will pit undefeated Alexandria, VA middleweight Brandon Quarles against tough Omar "The Machine" Sims of Baltimore, MD. Quarles (7-0, two KO's) is coming off a four-round split decision win over Corey Preston on July 9 in Atlantic City, NJ. Sims (6-4-3, three KO's) captured a four-round split decision over Barry Trotter on November 19 in Fairfax, VA.

Severn, MD middleweight Sherman Artis, Jr. (2-0) will battle Frederick, MD's Allan "Pit Bull" Perkins (1-5) in a four-round contest.

Also, there will be two guys looking for their first pro win as Baltimore middleweight Lee Snow (0-2) faces Stephen Franklin of Martinsburg, WVA (0-6) in another four-rounder.

Also slated to be on the card are undefeated Ferndale, MD cruiserweight "Slick" Nick Kisner (10-0-1, five KO's) and Brooklyn, NY junior middleweight Dushane Crooks (4-0, three KO's. The main event is the eight-round rematch between Tony "Mo Better" Jeter and Jose Felix. Felix won the first battle in December.

Two Great Trainers, Linked in History, Pass Within Days of Each Other!

This picture that I received from boxer and trainer "Ice" John Scully is now a solemn one. On the right is Angelo Dundee, who passed away on Wednesday. On the left is Goody Petronelli, who was the long-time trainer of Marvelous Marvin Hagler. The two would face off when Hagler challenged Sugar Ray Leonard in 1987. Petronelli died on January 29 at the age of 88.

Petronelli had a minor Beltway connection; he was in the corner of Kevin McBride when McBride defeated Mike Tyson at the MCI/Verizon Center in DC in 2005.

Angelo Dundee, 1921-2012!

Most boxing fans knew him as the trainer of two of the most popular boxing champions of all-time. Everyone in boxing knew him as not only a hall of fame trainer, but also truly one hell of a nice guy.

Angelo Dundee passed away today. He was 90 years old.

Mr. Dundee trained 15 world champions during his career. Most people know he was the man behind the legends of Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. He also trained the likes of Jose Napoles and Carmen Basilio. In the latter years of his career, he was still giving his vast knowledge to young prospects, such as the Beltway's own Jimmy Lange.

He was, simply, a legend.
