Salisbury, MD middleweight Fernando Guerrero returns to action on Saturday, February 18 when he faces James Winchester of Greensboro, NC at the Grand Oasis Resort in Cancun, Mexico. This will be a bout to be fought at a contracted weight at 164 pounds.
Guerrero (22-1, 17 KO's) bounced back from his first pro loss against Grady Brewer in June of 2011 with a fifth-round TKO over Robert Kliewer on the Capital Showdown card on December 10 in DC. According to Bay Area writer Ryan Maquinana, Guerrero has a new trainer in Ricky Funez and has been training at the Fortune Gym and Robert Garcia's Oxnard Gym in California.
Winchester (12-4, four KO's) has won two straight since his losses to prospects Glen Tapia and Matt Korobov. This bout was originally slated to be on the undercard of Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz, but that bout was postponed until June because Berto suffered an injury.
It's amazing what one loss can do to a fighter's career. Sure, he is flawed, but why does he have to go all the way to Cancun to fight now? Doesn't he sell enough tickets at home to make that viable?
ReplyDeleteGood question. The fight was originally scheduled for Las Vegas on the Berto-Ortiz card, This was probably the first date that was available.
ReplyDeleteWho cares...he's gettin back in the ring and gettin back on track. Does it really matter where he fights? I'm sure he's got a plan and somethin in the works that none of us are aware of.
ReplyDeleteNOVEL IDEA,try going with the man who trained you,fed you, clothed you etc etc,he got you very far as an amatuer, you learned together,at leasat you got rid of those cheerleaders in DC,get your ass back to Md and the man who made you
ReplyDeleteThere's somethin to be learned by everyone, not just one man. Thats the part of growing as a fighter, you take and learn from all those that come into your path and have given you the tools to put away in your toolbox. Some trainers only use or teach one tool, nothing wrong with learning how to use other tools from different trainers.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Hal still his manager.
ReplyDeleteBut those cheerleaders in dc didn't get him his first lost ando they r over there collecting belts
