Nicholson Stopped In Seventh In Philadelphia!
In a tough and, at times, confusing contest at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, PA, Laurel, MD super middleweight Demond "D'Best At It" Nicholson lost by seventh-round TKO to Jesse "Hollywood" Hart of Philadelphia in front of a nationally-televised audience on ESPN. With the victory, Hart captured the vacant NABF Super Middleweight title.
Hart had an early advantage as he tried to use his three-inch height advantage to try to pick Nicholson off in the first round. However, Nicholson managed to hurt Hart with a right hand right before the bell.
The majority of the confusion came from the referee in the contest, Shawn Clark, who was absolutely atrocious in this bout. In the third round, Nicholson seemed to trip on Hart's foot and fell onto the canvas. Hart threw a sweeping right hook during the tangle but missed. However, Clark still called a knockdown against Nicholson. Later in the third, Hart landed a series of punches that legitimately dropped Nicholson to the canvas.
Nicholson held his own during the middle portion of the fight as he landed uppercuts and some body shots but in the seventh round, Hart swarmed Nicholson with hard punches and sent him to a squatting position on the canvas. Nicholson's gloves touched the canvas right in front of Clark, who somehow, totally missed that and did not rule a knockdown. Hart continued his onslaught in the round dropping Nicholson again. Clark called that a knockdown and gave an eight-count. At the end of eight, he asked Nicholson to get up. Nicholson stayed down but Hart did not continue his count., giving Nicholson a few extra seconds to recover. When Nicholson did get up, Clark waived off the bout. The bout was stopped at 2:26 of the seventh round.
The loss drops Nicholson's record to 18-3-1, 17 KO's. Hart's record rises to 24-1, 20 KO's.

Hurd-Lara 2? WBA Orders Hurd-Lara Rematch!
According to Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com, the Championship Committee of the World Boxing Association has ordered a rematch between WBA/IBF/IBO 154-pound champion Jarrett Hurd and former champion Erislandy Lara.
Both sides were advised that a deal must be reached within 30 days or a purse bid would be scheduled. Hurd defeated Lara by 12-round split decision on April 7th at the Hard Rock Hotel in Casino in Las Vegas, NV. The Hurd camp has yet to respond to this order.
Right now, the plan for Hurd as well as for Showtime, is for Hurd (22-0, 15 KO's) to take on WBC Junior Middleweight champ Jermell Charlo in a unification bout sometime in the fall, provided Charlo gets past former world champion Austin Trout on June 9th in Los Angeles. Hurd knocked out Trout in the 10th round this past October in Brooklyn, NY.
According to Reeno, a unification bout will take precedence over a rematch order but Hurd will have to submit an exception to the WBA to get approved.

Davis remains undefeated at 20-0, 19 KO's while Cuellar is now 28-3, 21 KO's.
On the undercard, Capitol Heights, MD super lightweight Antuanne Russell remained perfect with a third-round stoppage of Andrew Rodgers of Elkhart, IN. Russell hammered Rodgers for the entire bout. Roach, Jr., Cruz Battle to 10-Round Draw In Puerto Rico!
Upper Marlboro, MD's Lamont Roach, Jr. and former world title contender Orlando "El Fenomeno" Cruz of San Juan, Puerto Rico battled to a 10-round split decision draw at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan on Thursday evening. The bout was nationally televised by ESPN2 and was for the vacant WBO International Super Featherweight title.
Roach got off to a slower than usual start in the contest and that allowed Cruz to counter punch effectively. Roach did, however, seem to land more quality shots than Cruz in the bout.
Roach did step up his attack in the last three rounds. There was a key moment in the ninth round when Roach seemed to drop Cruz with a left hook. However, the referee, Luis Pabon, ruled that Cruz slipped and did not call the knockdown. If Roach had received credit for the knockdown, he would have won the bout on the scorecards.
One judge did score the bout for Roach, 97-93. Another judge saw the contest for Cruz, 96-94. The third judge saw the draw at 95-95. Roach remains undefeated at 16-0-1, six KO's while Cruz is now 25-6-2, 13 KO's.

Unified Champion Hurd Lauded By Prince George's County Council!
(Photos by Juan Marshall)
"Seat Pleasant has Kevin Durant and Accokeek has "Swift" Jarrett Hurd!"
Those were the words of Prince George's County Councilmember Mel Franklin as he and the rest of the council honored IBF/WBA/IBO 154 Pound world champion Jarrett Hurd with a proclamation during a special ceremony at the County Administration Building in Upper Marlboro, MD. A strong contingent of fans and family members were on hand to witness the event.
The Accokeek, MD native was honored for his career to date, including Hurd's 12th round split decision victory over Erislandy Lara on April 7th in Las Vegas, NV. During the ceremony, Hurd thanked his team and his parents, Fred and Brenda Hurd for their support.
"My Mom allowed me to follow my dream and my Dad was my biggest fan," Hurd said. "My fights were always on in our house."
Life changed dramatically, according to Hurd, after April 7th and he is now dealing with the quick change.
"It's definitely life changing and it's overwhelming," Hurd said. "It's a lot to take in but at the end of the day, I'm ready for it. I'm still living in my parents house but it hit me that I really unified the titles."
"I have a lot of people coming at me, big sponsors" Hurd continued. "A lot of people want to work with me and are reaching out to me. I can't wait to take it all in."
Hurd also reflected on the Lara contest, including the dramatic left hook that sent Lara to the canvas with 35 seconds remaining in the final round.
"I didn't feel like I had to get the knockdown. I thought I was ahead on the cards. Ernesto (Rodriguez, Hurd's trainer) grabbed my face and said 'you are the unified champion. All you have to do is get through this round.' But I'm glad I had the war mentality. I wanted to close the show."

Smith Scores Second-Round TKO In Bethlehem, PA!
Bowie, MD cruiserweight Luther "Lights Out" Smith scored a second-round TKO over Elvin "Koko" Sanchez of Paterson, NJ Friday at the Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, PA.

However, early in the second round, Smith landed a solid right hook that dropped Sanchez. Smith would follow the knockdown moments later with a crushing straight left hand that sent Sanchez to his knees. The referee immediately stopped the contest at 55 seconds of the round.

Davis Gives Comments As He Prepares For Championship Bout April 21st!
Baltimore, MD super featherweight and former IBF Super Featherweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis gave some comments as he prepares for his bout for the vacant WBA Super Featherweight championship against former WBA Featherweight titleholder Jesus Cuellar on Saturday, April 21st at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.
For this bout, Davis has moved his training from Baltimore to West Palm Beach, FL where he is working with noted trainer Kevin Cunningham, who worked with former world champions Devon Alexander and Cory Spinks. Davis is sharing a training camp with former four-division world champ Adrien Broner, who will battle former welterweight champ Jesse Vargas in the main event. Davis explains why he decided to train with Cunningham.
"I was actually going to go to Colorado to train, but Adrien invited me to come down here to West Palm Beach to check out the camp. He said I should come to Florida to train with him and Kevin. So I came down, I saw Kevin's routine and I really liked it.
"There were a lot of distractions in Baltimore and I think they were a problem for me. I needed to straighten my head and focus on the things I have to work on. It was time to set my camp somewhere else.
"I needed a change after my last fight. I let myself down. I learned to be a different fighter, more responsible. I let others down, but think I let myself down more than anything."
The card also features another former world champion Jermall Charlo who will take on Hugo Centeno, Jr. for the interim 160-Pound world title. The card will be televised by Showtime beginning at 9 PM ET.

Russell, Jr. Verbally Agrees To Defend Title Against Diaz!
Another Beltway world champion could be defending his title soon. According to The Ring, WBC Featherweight champion Gary Russell, Jr. of Capitol Heights, MD has verbally agreed to defend his title against his number one contender, undefeated Joseph "Jo Jo" Diaz, Jr. of Downey, CA.
The title bout could take place anytime between May 19th and June 30th. Promoters Golden Boy Promotions and Al Haymon also have to work out purse, network and location of the bout. The Ring reports that both HBO and Showtime are in the mix.
Russell (28-1, 17 KO's) last fought on May 20th and scored a seventh-round TKO over Oscar Escandon at the MGM National Harbor Casino in Oxon Hill, MD. This was the second defense of Russell's title.
Diaz (26-0, 14 KO's) is the reigning NABF and NABO Featherweight titleholder. Diaz is coming off a third-round TKO victory over Victor Terrazas on February 22nd in Indio, CA. Like Russell, Diaz is an Olympian who represented the United States in London, England in 2012.
An interesting dynamic of this proposed bout is the activity of the two boxers. Since Russell suffered his only defeat to Vasyl Lomachenko in June of 2014, Russell has competed just four times. During that same time period, Diaz has been in the ring 16 times.

Hurd Unifies WBA/IBF/IBO 154-Pound Title With Split Decision Victory in Las Vegas!
Accokeek, MD's "Swift" Jarrett Hurd has unified the WBA/IBF/IBO 154-pound championship in an outstanding contest, defeating "The American Dream" Erislandy Lara of Houston, TX by way of Guantanamo, Cuba by split decision at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.
For the most part, it was a typical Hurd bout in which he took solid shots from Lara early. In the middle rounds, Hurd started to break Lara down and land shots. However, Lara was very game and, where other boxers wilted under Hurd's late pressure, Lara kept coming and continued to land shots at times in the late rounds.
The bout may have turned for good in the 12th and final round when Hurd landed a crushing left hook that dropped Lara to the canvas with less than a minute to go. Lara got up and even landed shots at the end but the knockdown gave Hurd the victory.
Judge Burt Clements saw the bout 114-113 for Lara but judges Glenn Feldman and Dave Moretti saw the contest 114-113 for Hurd, who remains undefeated at 22-0, 15 KO's. Lara falls to 25-3-2, 14 KO's.
Hurd becomes the first Beltway Boxer since Lamont Peterson to hold two world titles at the same time. Peterson won the IBF and WBA Super Lightweight titles when he defeated Amir Khan in December of 2011 at the Washington Convention Center. Hurd is also the seventh man in division history to unify portions of the 154-pound title, joining International Boxing Hall of Famers Terry Norris, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and Winky Wright, along with two future hall of famers in Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Canelo Alvarez.

Maryland Boxing Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony Takes Place April 29th In Glen Burnie!
The Ring 101 International Veterans Boxing Association will have the 2018 Maryland Boxing Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sunday, April 29th beginning at 2 PM at Michael's Eighth Avenue, located at 7720 Grayburn Drive in Glen Burnie, MD. Here is the 2018 Hall of Fame class.
Boxer Category:
Ed Griffin, super lightweight from 1991-2000, 16-9, five KO's, Baltimore, MD
Griffin was one of the most exciting boxers in the Baltimore area during the 1990's winning his first 11 bouts in his career. Griffin fought quality opposition like former world champions Vernon Forrest and Charles Murray, former world title contender Larry Marks, Humberto Aranda and fellow Beltway Boxer Curtis Peoples.
Les "White Lightning" Johnson, super welterweight from 1989-1994, 21-2, 15 KO's, Rockville, MD
Only injuries kept this fan favorite from a possible regional or a world championship. Johnson fought a who's who of fellow locals including Demetrius Davis, Charlie Tuttle, Ivory Teague and Alphonso Dyer.
Mike "Little Rock" Ricasa, lightweight from 2004-2006, 7-2, three KO's, Ellicott City, MD
Ricasa had a short but exciting career, highlighted by his two bouts with fellow local Dean White. Ricasa also fought Beltway Boxers Anthony Hardy and Ron Boyd. Ricasa ended his career with a first-round knockout victory in 2006.
Trainer Category:
Hal Chernoff -- Chernoff has trained boxers in his Main Street Gym in Salisbury, MD since 1993. Chernoff's most notable protege was Fernando Guerrero who was a local legend in the city, bringing 5,000 people to a regional title bout in his hometown.
David Sewell -- Sewell is a former pro boxer who turned to training boxers out of the Charm City Boxing and Fitness Gym in Baltimore. Among his major proteges was Emmanuel Taylor.
Lifetime Contribution To Boxing:
JD Brown -- Brown's contributions to boxing are widespread. Brown was a valued member of the Sugar Ray Leonard camp and managed William Joppy during his three WBA Middleweight title reigns. Brown also served as matchmaker for a number of famous Beltway cards including at Fight Night and the bouts that featured Jimmy Lange.
Ed Sauerhoff -- Sauerhoff began as pro boxer but became a promoter alongside his family members. His father, George "Hunky" Sauerhoff, was known as the "Mayor of Pigtown."
Scott Wagner -- It seems only fitting that Wagner would be honored (albeit posthumously) at Michael's where he promoted the legendary Ballroom Boxing promotion from 1995-2010. Wagner died in February at the age of 49.
Amateur Category:
Warren Boardley -- Boardley, a native of Baltimore, was 43-8 as an amateur and won the South Atlantic AAU Championship at 132 pounds.
Dominic Zannino -- Zannino, also of Baltimore, was 26-6 as an amateur. Zannino won a South Atlantic title in the early 90's and a regional title in 1998. He advanced to the quarter finals of the 2000 Olympic qualifiers.
Tickets are $75 and can be purchased by calling 410-375-9175 or 443-714-9599.

Hurd, Lara Have Final Media Workout In Las Vegas!
Junior middleweight world champions "Swift" Jarrett Hurd (IBF) and "The American Dream" Erislandy Lara (WBA/IBO) had their final media workout in preparation for their unification matchup on Saturday, April 7th at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Here are quotes from the two titlists.
Jarrett Hurd: "There was something in me that always wanted this fight. Once I defended my title against Austin Trout, I was quick to get on top of this opportunity.
"This is going to be a difficult fight. Lara is the type of fighter who has a lot of experience. It won't be easy so I have to be well prepared and on top of my game come Saturday night.
"We've been in the gym working a lot on our hand movement and footwork. I took too many punches against Trout and I knew what it was going to take to make those improvements.
"Every fight is the most important fight of my career because I'm protecting this undefeated record. This is going to be a tough fight but I promise I'm going to give it my all and bring it to Lara all night long.
"Being back in Vegas and back at Hard Rock where I beat Frank Galarza to really get this whole journey started means a lot to me. I'm planning to give everyone a great show just like I always do.
"No matter what kind of fight he brings; I'm going to stick to my game plan. He has to fight at my pace. No matter what he comes with, I'm going to be in charge in the ring.
"It's always going to be fireworks when I'm in the ring. I have a fan-friendly style. At the end of the day, you don't have to worry about Lara running away, because I'm going to be in his face for 12 rounds."
Erislandy Lara: "Everything in training went how it was supposed to. We did our job and now it's time to fight. I did everything in the gym that I needed to prepare for anything that Hurd can bring.
"All of my opponents are taller than me. His size means nothing to me. I have the experience and I'm the best boxer in the division. He's never seen anything like me.
"He has to beat me to get the top spot in this division. I'm here to make sure that doesn't happen.
"I've earned everything in this sport the hard way. I've fought the tough fights for no money. I think everyone knows how talented I am and that I belong up there with the best in the sport.
"I don't watch film in training camp. A fighter can look one way on video, but totally different in the ring. He has to prepare for what I'm doing. I'm not worried about what he brings. I saw a little bit of his fight against Trout while I was warming up to fight Terrell Gausha, but that's about it."
