Results From Washington Golden Glove Championship Finals!

The Washington Golden Gloves Championship Finals proved to be a very competitive affair Saturday at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.

The standout performance in the Open Division came from Kevon Cooke of No Xcuse Boxing Gym in Capitol Heights, MD who dominated in the 108-pound division scoring a second-round stoppage of Julius White of the Sugar Ray Leonard Gym in Palmer Park, MD.

Otherwise, it was a good night for the Sugar Ray Leonard gym as their boxers won four Open Division titles en route to the team trophy.  The Avelar Brothers won three of the titles.  Tommy Avelar won his second straight title at 132 Pounds by a 3-2 decision in a rematch over Ebrima Jawara of the Laurel Gym.  Wilfredo Avelar defeated Jalen Jones of Limelite Boxing of DC in the 141-pound championship by a 3-2 decision.  Brian Avelar captured the 152-pound title with a unanimous decision over Marlon Bolen of Floyd's Gym of Clinton, MD.

Also, Dwayne Holmes, Jr. of Sugar Ray Leonard won the 123-pound championship with a 5-0 victory over Chris Glen of Hagerstown Boxing.

In other bouts in the Open Division, Keon Burroughs of the Headbangers Gym of DC captured the 165-pound title with a victory over Tavon Marshall of Time 2 Grind in Baltimore.  Ezri Turner (Unattached) defeated Leonard Poe (Hillcrest) to win the 178-Pound championship.  In a rematch for the 201-Pound title, Thomas Mottinger of the Main Street Gym in Salisbury, MD defeated Shaka Williams of the NOMIS Youth Center in DC.  Also at 201+ Pounds,  Malik Titus (Time 2 Grind) defeated James McMurdo (Main Street) in a bout that matched the defending Regional champion against the 2017 Novice champion.

In the Novice Division, two boxers from the Champions Gym in Rockville, MD won titles to help give Champions the team trophy.  Brient Rodriguez won the 123-Pound title with a 3-2 win over Elon'e Kemp of Limelite while Dominic Fantauzzo captured the 141-pound title over Tre'von Wells of the Dream Team Gym in Clinton, MD by a 3-2 score.

At 114 Pounds, Oscar Morales (Laurel) defeated Albert Sostre (Headbangers).  At 152 Pounds, Quinton Stephens (Headbangers) defeated Markeese Hines (Main Street).  Moses Saleem, boxing unattached, won the 165-pound division title with a win over Cristano Lucio of Old School boxing gym, located on the Rosecroft grounds.  At 201 Pounds, Jermaine Harbert of Headbangers won the title by defeating Daryl Palmer of Raw Assassin.

Delaware, which is also part of the Washington, DC region, was represented by Isaiah Harris of Dog Pound Gym of Dover who won the 132 Pound championship with a victory over Antonio Dunston-El of Baltimore's Honeycomb Gym.

There were three walkover champions on Saturday.  Joel Tchantchuinj of Urban Boxing of Columbia, MD (178 Pounds), Nerissa Turner of Elite Boxing of Columbia (Female 132 Pound) and Zackary Chick of MVJ Athletics in Newark, DE (201+ Pounds).

These winners advance to the Regional championships on Friday, May 4th at Rosecroft Raceway to face the Virginia/North Carolina champions.  The Virginia/North Carolina Golden Gloves will begin at the Annandale Boys And Girls Club (also known as the ABC Sports Complex) on Friday and Saturday, April 20th and 21 at 7:30 PM.  The finals will be held in Norfolk, VA at the Norfolk Boxing Center the following Friday and Saturday, April 27th and 28th.
