New Beltway Boxing Poll: Who is the 2007 Rookie of the Year?

I've decided not to do a full-scale year-end excellence awards like last year. But I did want to get the opinion of Beltway Boxing Fans in a few categories, like this one:

Who is the 2007 Beltway Boxing Rookie of the Year?

There are 10 boxers who started their career between November 2006 and November 2007 that I feel deserve consideration for this award. Here is the list in alphabetical order:

"The Golden Greek" Elias Bouloubassis (3-0-3, three KO's)

Earl "Mighty Mouse" Cole (2-1, one KO)

Bayan Jargal (4-0-1, two KO's)

Alexander "The Great" Johnson (3-0, three KO's)

Lawrence Jones (2-1, one KO)

Danny Kisner (1-0, one KO)

Travis "O.T.T." Mallin (1-0)

"War Time" George Rivera (5-1, two KO's)

Edgar "The Tiger" Torres (2-0, two KO's)

"White Lightning" Todd Wilson (3-0, one KO)

Since I was able to place 10 boxers in this poll, there is no room for the "other" category on the poll. However, that doesn't mean, you can't vote for another boxer that isn't listed -- as long as he started his pro career between November 2006 and November 2007. If I find that someone you voted for doesn't fall into that criteria, that vote will be thrown out.

You have until Sunday, December 9 to make your choice before I take the poll down. Keep these facts in mind as you vote:

Travis Mallin is slated to be part of the Saturday, November 17 card at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.

George Rivera will be on the Saturday, November 17 card in Harrisonburg, VA. Rivera also holds a victory over Lawrence Jones.

Danny Kisner is scheduled to be on the Ballroom Boxing card on Thursday, November 29 at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.

Elias Bouloubassis is slated to matchup against Lawrence Jones on the Friday, December 7 card at the Pikesville Armory in Pikesville, MD.

I expect this to be a very spirited debate. Please try to refrain from name calling and stick to good, thoughtful boxing debate. Thank you.

Lot of good choices here:
-Jargal's been impressive
-"O.T.T" impressed me in his debut
-I gotta go w/ "War Time" though.

This is a good list of fighters just like last year.it is going to be a tough one to decide. i like my partner in crime O.T.T but there are a lot of good fighters on the list.

I'm sure they are very good fighters, but I have to remove the following from my voting list because I've never seen them fight: Elias Bouloubassis, Earl "Mighty Mouse" Cole, Alexander "The Great" Johnson, and Danny Kisner.

Lawrence Jones is a very good fighter who would be a tough style matchup for a lot of area middleweights.

I've heard Edgar Torres is having some outside the ring troubles. Let's hope he gets his act on track because he was impressive each time I saw him.

Bayan Jargal is a very good fighter, very strong, tough, durable, and will be a tough fight for anyone in the area in his weight class. A good boxer will matchup well with him in my opinion.

Travis Mallin was very impressive to me in his pro debut. Great speed of both foot and hand, good power, nice skills. He can really go a long way.

The Rookie of the Year thus far is a tie in my opinion between "War Time" George Rivera and "White Ligthing" Todd Wilson.

Rivera is a smooth boxer puncher. He can bang you to the body or snap you with a crisp jab. Plus, he's a tall junior middleweight and will have physical advantages over almost everyone he fights at that weight.

"White Lightning" Todd Wilson is a ring technician. He's a very sharp, snappy puncher and he's tough as heck. Plus, he's a southpaw and he's awkwardly effective. He makes his awkwardness win fights for him. He'll go a long way before he loses a fight.

Also, War Time and White Lightning have legions of fans that watch them fight. When they fight, the crowd is electric which only adds to the energy of the show.

Once again, it's a tie for Rookie of the Year between "War Time" George River and "White Lightning" Todd Wilson.

Gary this is a very impressive list of rookies and I think that
Just about any of these guys could
make their way to the big picture
within a few years.
As you and other experienced boxing
people know it takes more than just ability to make it in this game.It takes a team of people behind each fighter and between Jake Smith,Scott Farmer,Joe Hensley, and Han Kim ,Each of these guys seem to have that element
behind them.

Anonymous said...

Tell me one fighter who has one of these guys behind him who has made it in this game? Not being a hater, just asking a legitimate question? Of the fighters of the past who have been with Smith, Farmer, Kim and Hensley, who has made real money or become a champion of any of the four main sanctioning bodies (WBC, WBA,IBF,WBO) or their North American Divisions (NABF, NABO,USBA, NABO)? The answer here is probably only Han Kim with Nwodo, but he has not made any real money and his acreer is dead in the water at the moment after his loss to Wilson)
The reason for the question is simple- if you are an upcoming young fighter do you want one of these guys to get behind you? If you are an area rookie of the year or one of the best up and comers, who are the folks that you should be with if you are going to make it nationally? Because the career of a professional boxer is very, very short so that it rests with the fighter to make the key choice of who is going to handle is career and if he makes the wrong choice and loses 3 years out of a twelve year career he has really hurt himself.

to the moron who posted the comment about the local promoters. These promoters for the most part have just started promoting on a consistant basis. The haven't had time to get anyone into the top ten in the world or anything like that. So maybe you want to state your name and lets see who you have put into the top ten, or maybe let's see who's fighters you have stolen.these promoters work hard to better the sport of boxing in our area, why would you tell someone not to get involved with any of them? These guys do small shows obviously not making any money, just trying to build there guys and build boxing up around the beltway. so i say you should try to promote sometime. you truly don't know your butt from a hole in the ground.

I respectfully disagree with Tom M. Every promoter has to have his first success story. These smaller local promoters are in familiar territory throwing their own smaller shows. When their fighters step up and fight on bigger cards, that will be the test but don't count them out before that happens. And FYI, Nwodo is CO-managed by Carl King.

To Mr. Nom De Guerre Tom Molineaux (I'll explain what this means later in the post to those scratching their heads and saying, "WHAT?")

All of the local boxing promoters are trying their best to put on good boxing cards, develop fighters, and make some money. I think that we have all achieved these objectives with varying degrees of success. To my knowledge, there is not a "Full Time" Boxing Promoter that promotes shows in Maryland, DC, or Virginia. The possible exception could be Jake Smith, but I'm not sure. I have a full time job. Scott Farmer has a full time job. Han Kim has a full time job. Almost everyone I know in boxing, including the boxers, has a full time job. Every promoter that I know, including myself, would love to make a full time income from promoting professional boxing. In my short promotional career (I started at the end of 2004) I made a little money on some of my shows, and lost quite a bit of money on the rest of the shows.

There are some very talented fighters who live in Virginia, Maryland, and DC. I have had the opportunity to work with many great boxers, trainers, managers, and promoters in the 3 short years that I've been involved in boxing. It has only been in the last year that I would even consider myself a decent boxing promoter who has a good idea of what I'm doing. I love the sport of boxing and I have always tried to promote my shows around a simple concept - the fights must be competitive. Have all of my fights been competitive? NO! Have there been some real stinkers throughout the years? OF COURSE! Have I tried to achieve cards full of competitive matchups for every show that I have ever promoted? ABSOLUTELY!

Now Mr. Tom Molineaux, as to your question regarding fighters who have "one of these guys" - (and then you specifically refer to Han Kim, Scott Farmer, and Joe Hensley) behind him who has made it in this game. Han Kim made a very smart decision by signing Emmanuel Nwodo to a promotional contract. Then Kim landed a USBA title fight for Nwodo against the very capable Chris Thomas at The ABC Sports Complex in Northern VA. I am sure this was at a tremendous financial expense to Han, but I'm sure he looked at it as an investment in Nwodo's career. Nwodo is one heck of a fighter, he has tremendous power, and despite his recent loss, I think the future is still bright for Emmanuel Nwodo and his promoter Han Kim. There may be some real money, and a world title for Nwodo, in the future for both of these guys. I have had fighters box on Han Kim's shows and he has had fighters on shows that I've been involved with. Han is a nice man who is very easy to work with.

Scott Farmer has some very good young talent that he is developing both as a trainer and as a promoter. His son Andrew is an excellent jr. welterweight prospect. He can box, he can punch, and he has an extensive amateur background. Travis Mallin is a young fighter who just turned pro, but Scott has been with him for a while. I expect big things from him in the years to come. Just give Andrew, Travis, and Scott some time and they can do big thigs. As with Han, we have had our fighters box on Scott Farmer's shows. We have a very good relationship with Scott.

Jimmy Lange received a shot at the WBC Continental Americas Title on a show that I promoted in 2006. So, Tom Molineaux, Emmanuel Nwodo isn't the only fighter from the area with any of "these guys" behind them that has received a title shot. Jimmy has a heck of a team behind him which includes his manager and father Johnny Lange. It was a team effort, which included myself, Jackie Kallen, Jimmy Lange, and Johnny Lange (among others) to get the WBC to make Lange-Cabell I worthy of their Continental America's Title. There aren't many people who know who I am, but of the ones that do, most of them know me from those Patriot Center shows featuring Jimmy Lange. I owe a lot to them and I have enjoyed working with them and they are really great people and a true benefit to boxing in this area. Also, those were some really big shows which produced some of the largest gates for non-televised boxing shows which have taken place in the US within the last 20 years.

Tom Molineaux, you have to give me some time to develop some talent before you just cast me aside as not be able to help a fighter with his career. I have two fighters signed to exclusive promotional contracts. They are: Juan Carlos Robles (9 and 0, 4KO's) and George Rivera (5 and 1, 2KO's). I think they both have a tremendous amount of talent and ability and we are growing, along with their Manager and Trainer Bruce Frank, as a promotional company together. We have great relationships with all of the promoters in the area and know almost all of them on a first name basis. Juan Robles turned pro in April of 2006 and between then and April 2007 he rose to a record of 9 and 0! That's one heck of a pace for a first year pro. If it weren't for his early May motorcycle crash, Juan would have had a minimum of 3 more fights for 2007. George Rivera turned pro in February of 2007. He has a record of 5 and 1 and has two fights scheduled for the remainder of 2007. That's 8 fights within a 12 month time! That's a pace that 99% of the young fighters out there would envy! How about a fighter that can't get a fight? How would you think they would react if a promotional and management team could get them 8 or 9 fights within a twelve month period? They would thank their lucky stars. And believe me, our guys are thankful to have us and we're thankful to have them! There are several other fighters that we are involved with, but not on an exclusive promotional level. For time's sake, I'll just keep it at that.

Tom Molineaux, give me about 18 months. I think those regional belts (and beyond 18 months, even more) are within the reach of George Rivera and Juan Carlos Robles. 2008 is going to be a big year for our guys and our promotional company. It's going to be a big year for boxing in Virginia, Maryland, and DC.

And now to the meaning of "Tom Molineaux" and "Nom De Guerre". Tom Molineaux was a bare knuckle boxer from Virginia who fought in the early 1800's. "Nom De Guerre" means pen name or pseudonym or fictitious name. In other words Tom Molineaux, who posts on this blog, is really not Tom Molineaux -that's not his real name. I have no problem with anonymous posts or nick names. I just had to respond to "Tom Molineaux's" post because he specifically referenced me by name and said "if you are an upcoming young fighter do you want one of these guys to get behind you? If you are an area rookie of the year or one of the best up and comers, who are the folks that you should be with if you are going to make it nationally?"

All I can say is that we are very selective on who we work with, it has to make sense for all parties involved. But if we do decide to promote a fighter, we will treat that fighter like family and we will do everything within our power to develop that fighter in to a world champion. That's our ultimate goal for every fighter that we promote. Surely someone who knows who Tom Molineaux is has the boxing intelligence to know that it takes time, hard work, intelligence, etc. to promote a prospect in to legitimate title contention.

Digital, thanks for everything you do to help the boxing scene in the Beltway region and beyond.

Nate Peake is a fulltime promotor/management

Anonymous said...

I appreciate the fact that Mr. Hensley has revealed who I am, as I have been writing on the blog for sometime and he is the first to recognize me. In 1811, I fought Tom Cribb, the British champion on a field in England. We fought 39 hard rounds, and I lost (many people said that it was because of my penchant for drink and skirt). I was the first black man to ever fight for the heavyweight title. I was a freed slave and was trained and managed by another freed slave, Bill Richmond (who later had a career as a fighter as well). We had a rematch the following year that only lasted eleven rounds, but THAT was because of my so called penchant for drink and for skirt.
But back to the blog, I will give Mr. Hensley the eighteen months that he has requested, Mr. Kim has already done something with Nwodo. He certainly invested in him and got him his shot, whether he and Kim are one hit wonders remains to be seen. Farmer is the new man onthe block so I will give him more time. No time though for Mr. Smith. He has been around more than anyone else and seems to have less to show for it. I am happy to give the others some time and see what happens.

PS I am going to check my family records and those of my trainer Bill Richmond and see if any of them ever worked for any family named Hensley in Virginia!

If Mr. Peake is "full time promotor/management" then someone should turn him in to his local commission. You are not allowed under the Ali Act to be both a promoter and a manager.

Tom,

Thank you for the extra time to prove myself. 2008 will be a huge year for Juan Carlos Robles, George Rivera, Todd Wilson, and so many other good Virginia and Beltway area prospects such as Andrew Farmer, Bayan Jargal, Patrick Budd, Adam Seal, Abdul Salaam Gillyard, Bobby Jordan, Jr., Mondre Pope, Stephon Alexander, Jaywon Woods, Ivan Ziglar, Tracey Brewer, Charles Norwood and John Mackey (who fight each other this Saturday night at Scott Farmer's show! Should be a GREAT fight!) Most of these aforementioned guys are Virginia guys, but I'm sure Maryland and DC has an incredible amount of talent as well, and if you don't recognize all of those names you will shortly because all of these guys can fight! Don't forget, Jimmy Lange will be back at The Patriot Center in March 2008! It's going to be a huge year in the Beltway and we all know where to go for the info! Thanks Digital!

Really excellent cadre of rookies this year...makes choosing downright painful. I like a lot of these guys, but I would have to hand it hands down to Mr. Jargal. this poll isn't really the most fair way to determine this and I know he doesn't have a huge family or fan base to really push the numbers to win. But he certainly deserves it. All of these rookies made us proud and gave their heart and all are winners in this BATB heart!

I realize that these polls are largely popularity contests. Addressing the question at hand, ‘who is the rookie of the year?’ it’s crucial for individuals reading this to keep an open mind. With the facts presented in an unbiased boxing enthusiastic perspective, let’s take a look at the three boxers topping the polls at the moment (George Rivera, Todd Wilson, and Elais Bouloubassis) and make the decision after some research (all statistics presented, from (BoxRec.com)).
George Rivera was in first place the last time I checked while Todd, then Elais rounded out the top three. George and Todd leading is no surprise considering the following that both bring to their fights. Trying to keep an open mind looking at the facts and not interjecting your own bias into the vote is important in making an educated decision. Looking at facts relevant to the question, the following points will be addressed, age, starting date, number of wins/losses/draws, the quality of opponents (records), and finally an overall assessment.
Starting with George ‘War Time’ Rivera (29 yrs/old) has a record of 5-1 starting in February of 2007. Todd ‘White Lightning’ Wilson (23 yrs/old) has three career fights all victories, one by TKO starting in April of this year. Elais ‘The Golden Greek’ Bouloubassis (27 yrs/old) comes into the debate with a record of three wins, zero defeats, and three draws starting in December of 2006. All of the three fighters having legitimate claims to the rookie of the year honors. Simply looking at one piece of the puzzle though can be misleading to the naked eye.
Looking more in-depth to their pro debut, ‘rookie’ bouts, Rivera and Wilson won by knock outs, while Bouloubassis started his career with a draw. Further research into the opponents of these first fights shows fighters against Bouloubassis and Wilson having one and two wins respectively, while Rivera’s debut came against a 0-2 fighter.
Looking solely on Rivera and his opponents, it is interesting to note that while The Golden Greek and White Lightning fought opponents with wins in their first bouts, War Time did not have a bout with a winning fighter until his fifth fight, more than six months after his pro debut. Out of his six professional fights only two of his opponents had a win at the time (both with two), totaling four wins between all six opponents (.66 wins an opponent). Now I have seen War Time fight and he is a very talented individual however, with three of his five wins coming against winless fighters (along with his one defeat) the quality of opposition comes into question.
Focusing on ‘White Lightning’ Todd Wilson, one will notice that all three of his opponents had at least one win under their belt. His opponents having a combined total of seven wins between them (2.3 wins a fighter). Wilson is the least experienced fighter with only three bouts, but it is important to note he is the only fighter in question that does not have a blemish on his record (no losses nor draws). Also it is important to remember the starting dates of the fighters, Wilson being the last to start fighting professionally.
Elais ‘The Golden Greek’ Bouloubassis is the other undefeated fighter in contention for rookie of the year (in the top three votes wise). Starting in December of last year Bouloubassis has racked up three wins all by KO. Again looking deeper into the 3-0-3 record, two of these three wins come against winless fighters. His opponents win total comes to three wins between six fighters (.5 wins a fighter). He does present an impressive undefeated record, but with just as many draws as wins.
After collecting the information relevant to the question at hand I feel much more prepared to make the most educated vote possible. While many ‘fans’ of boxing love to see KO’s (who doesn’t), one cannot get caught in a tunnel minded train of thought. The ultimate goal in any sport is to WIN. While ‘White Lightning’ is the least experience between the three, he is the only one without a loss, or draw on his record. It's very clear while staying objective when you look at all the evidence who the rookie of 2007 should be.

Good analysis, however, the FACT is that Bayan is better and more talented than all three. He just hasn't developed the fan support yet.

Anonymous said...

Sure Bayan is a very good fight, but Todd Wilson will outbox him with ease! If Andrew Farmer didn't slug with Jargal, he'd get him too. Jargal is strong, but he's not as big a puncher as you all say. He didn't get Reggie Holley out of there, did he? And Reggie's been stopped before. He can fight, don't get me wrong, but a good boxer who has a good jab and movement will beat him with ease as long as they don't get in to a slugging contest with him.

Digital, there is someone else that you didn't have on the list. He's only had one fight but was one heck of an amateur and that's Tracey Brewer from Arlington, VA. He's 1 and 0.

Charles Norwood is from Roanoke, so maybe that's why he's not on this list, but he can fight and he can punch. He's going to knock out John Mackey this Saturday at the ABC. Also, Norwood has fought a tremendous level of competition in his first four fights and takes on another undefeated fighter this Saturday. He's a bad dude!

Gary Digital Williams said...

I thought about putting Tracey on the list, but he didn't have another bout scheduled for this year. Mallin and Kisner did. So I knew we would get a chance to see them again. Brewer didn't have another bout scheduled.

He is a good rookie, though. He fought hard against Tim Scache at the Patriot Center.

Anonymous said...

He really is a very talented fighter and was a very good amateur. Maybe his career will really get rolling in 2008 (talking about Brewer).

There is some great talent on this list. I think there are some future world champions from this year's rookie crop and last year's rookie crop. It will be fun to watch the progress!

Bull actually only has 1 draw (his debut), the other 2 were cuts in the 1st rounds. In any state other than Maryland they would be considered no contest, but MD considers them as Technical Draws (an old rule that has been changed in every other state). That was a good break down though. Bull also has a great number of people that come to the Baltimore shows.

it's obvious that people are doing something fishy with the voting because if 1200 people thought that todd wilson was the rookie of the year the promoters could build a hole show around him and the same thing for the golden greek. there is something obviously wrong here. these young fighters do not have this kind of fan base, it's shows at the local shows in va and baltimore

Charles Norwood - He has fought excellent opposition and has been in exciting fights everytime. He has beaten War Time Rivera and has fought much better opposition.

Anonymous said...

Yes, Norwood is a rookie. He is 3-1 and has fought 3 undefeated fighters, and one who was 4-1. He is scheduled to fight a 6-0 fighter Saturday night. He has not ducked anyone. His only loss was a decision to top prospect Juan McPherson who was much bigger.

Anonymous said...

Just checked, Norwood's opponents for his first 5 fights are 15-1 and Young has another win that isn't on Boxing Rec. yet. If Murdock Norwood beats Mackey, he should be Rookie of the Year.

Dig - get the technology to allow people to only vote once from a computer, Otherwise polls like this are good for debate only. It's obvious that certain groups are spending a little more time that others. To those groups, the winner of this poll doesn't get more money, more wins or a title belt.

Digital,

Can you set up the voting like last year, where people email there votes to a set email address? Then you can ensure that each email address can only submit 1 vote. You can set up a spreadsheet listing each email address, then sort it by name to ensure no-1 voted twice.

My Family & Marines are voting from all over the world, but it does look like some people are voting numerous times (my people included, but not just my people I would bet so are the other fighters leading the votes).

Best of luck to whoever wins the award, but the award doesnt mean anything if it is won like this. I hope you can set something up Bro.

GodBless,

I cannot speak for the ‘Golden Greek,’ but as for ‘White Lightning’ he DOES have that kind of following. Through the networking of his family, friends, classmates at VMI, and co-workers, the fan base is there. You are insulting the fighters with large number of votes making accusations, without any evidence. I hope your “there is something obviously wrong here. these young fighters do not have this kind of fan base” post was not in response to any bitterness manifesting itself, because your fighter is not winning the poll.

Anonymous said...

The Golden Greek has a huge fan base also. He has alot of fans, family, and people all over the country/World from serving in the Marine Corps.

I think it's great that we have fighters with these kind of fan base's. Maybe 1 day we can get them all on the same card and pack a football stadium or something of that nature.

Anonymous said...

I agree Jim. I cannot be 100% sure that nobody is voting twice, but the system is in place, and to change it now I believe would be an insult to those of us who have voted truthfully and to those who will not be on here again to check. It is quite possible that a system change would be beneficial for future polls, but don’t think anyone wants to see another (2000 Florida Presidential style) recount. I think it’s great that there is this much of a following, it’s what promoters love to see. As stated previously “the winner of this poll doesn't get more money, more wins or a title belt.” The voting is here to show off your fan base, and I think it is tasteless for individuals to make assumptions about how many people a certain fighter should or could have voting for them.

I would like to add a Thank You and a God Bless to all men in uniform, here and abroad.

Anonymous said...

After posting my long comment yesterday, (comparing the three top fighters in the poll) and reading through the posts following it, I agree with a lot as well as disagree with some.

First off I would as the previous poster did I would like to stop and show respect to those who are serving and truly ‘fighting’ for all of us.

Since that is not up for debate lets look closer to one that is. After my post an individual wrote “Good analysis, however, the FACT is that Bayan is better and more talented than all three. He just hasn't developed the fan support yet.” Stepping back and looking at this statement what jumps out the most is that this person reiterates the word ‘FACT’ without stating one. Now I realize this website is set up to get peoples opinions on questions presented. However, if you are going to post your OPINION do not state it is a fact. This individual backed none of his statement up after his claim that Bayan is a better fighter. Now I understand that most people on here are not going to take the time that I did yesterday to research these fighters before making their decision, but if you are going to have a rebuttal to the FACTS that I presented, then at least have one worth posting. I am not taking anything away from Bayan I do agree that he does not have the fan base that the individuals leading this poll. That lower fan base however, does not make him more or less of a fighter.
He does have more fights then Mr. Wilson who is the fighter I assume you are talking about (due to you not really stating much of anything in your post) claiming only that he is simply a better fighter. Again due to the fact you don’t really state why you think this, I only can guess that you believe that Bayan has more power than Todd. Now I cannot go out and have a liftoff between these two fighters, but I feel that many people these days glorify power more than they should. I enjoy seeing a KO just as much as the next man, but boxing consists of much more than just one punch potential. I am not claiming that Bayan is a bad fighter by any means; he does have more to offer than just a KO.
The statement I am addressing is the individual’s non backing with anything but his opinion, believing that he believes Bayan would beat White Lightning. The facts state that the two individuals that Mr. Jargal won by TKO were in his first two fights (Patrick Bozeman, and Shane Gierke). Looking deeper into these individuals records, Bozeman (first fight) had a record of 0-3, all three losses coming by KO. This obviously is a solid win for Bayan in his debut but does not prove that he has a lot of power. Looking at Gierke he had a total of 12 losses 8 of which came by KO. To state that he has a lot of power and that this makes him a better fighter than Todd is incorrect. White Lightning as stated above would outbox him. I would not place a bet that Todd would KO Bayan but due to his technique, very good movement, southpaw stance, and elusiveness would defeat Bayan. Power has little effect if you are not able to connect, except for wearing the fighter down. In my OPINION Todd would outbox circles around Bayan and make White Lightning’s claim to being a better fighter a ‘FACT.’

Bayan is good, don't get me wrong, but Todd Wilson would give him a boxing lesson! No doubt in my mind, if they fought a 6 or 8 round fight Wilson wins almost every round. Go ahead and sell Wilson short if you want to, the boy can fight and that's a FACT!

Todd Wilson was a National Champion of College Boxing!

Everyone around the beltway says the fight between John Mackey vs Charles Norwood is gonna be the fight of the year. Do you all know that Mackey is schedule to fight Tony Cygan on December 7th, 2weeks later? People asking me if that is too much for Mackey. I dont think so. I just he is that good. I know C. Norwood is tough guy and I know Cygan is very good but I really think Mackey can handle it, I really think he is that good. Thank you all for showing interest in John Mackey's career.

If he wins those two fights, then he should be the Belt Way Rookie of the Year. Han Kim-

Oh Sugar Han, Sugar Han lookee here, lookee here. John Mackey is a beast, he's strong, and he can fight. But he hasn't been hit the way Charles Norwood is going to hit him. You're going to see Norwood at the weigh in and think he's a little guy, he's nothing special at all. He'll weigh in at about 153 or so and Mackey will be far bigger. And Mackey is a bad, bad boy - don't get me wrong, he can fight and he may win the fight. But I don't think so. I think Norwood is going to whack Mackey and Mackey is going to get a real funny look on his face like DAMMMMMNNNNNNN! I just got hit harder than I've ever been hit in my life! DAMMNNNN! This will be a war, it will be a great, great fight and Charles Norwood will have a win over another undefeated fighter. Forget the Tony Cygan fight, that AIN'T happen - even if Mackey wins. Mackey won't be ready to fight again for at least two months after Norwood is done with him. Norwood has knocked down everyone he's ever fought. He knocked out George Rivera with one punch. He knocked down Juan MacPhereson who was a former national champ in the amateurs. He dropped another guy named Young twice and he dropped his most recent opponent 3 times. Mackey's tough, he may make it the distance, but I would say Norwood by KO in the 3rd. Sorry Sugar Han, say goodbye to Tony Cygan! And Jake Smith, you better go ahead and make yourself another fight because Mackey ain't going to be in B-More in December. You heard it here first!

Piss Off! If I want to hit my key pad 100 times in a row to make sure my guy wins rookie of the year, that's what I want to do!

Gary, prior to this poll what was the total votes for other polls?Did any of thoses polls exceed 400 votes?....I think you need to re-do this like you did last years " best of"

You just made the point that is trying to be made. Let your guy win the vote - scream louder from the stands - tell all your friends. The vote that Dig has created was to determine from the fans who have seen some or all the fighters to see who they think is the rookie of the year - not to measure who can work their key pad the best.

The reason why I tried to change it last year was because people didn't vote and complained that it wasn't fair last year. People were very slow and did not want to vote.

I thought this would be an easier vote to do, but as many do, some take it too far.

Mackey better have a good mouthpiece and a ringside doctor available!....
It's going to be Bad & Blue

everyone saying todd will beat jargal i will bet $100 to your $10 that todd wont fight jargal but i bet jargal wont turn him down dont talk to be the man beat the man, right now jargal is that man in what i saw, lets not talk about the man just fight him he will be there he wont turn todd down, so lets go todd call some one if you want to fight jargal i bet that camp will say yes with out thinking about it

Anonymous said...

I KNOW Todd Wilson would fight and would beat Bayan Jargal. Simple as that. As far as your 10 to 1 thing goes, that's all talk and you know it.

Anonymous said...

WOW! Its obvious you have little to no experience in the wager world, due to your ‘$100 to $10’ bet, which to the educated world, would be 10 to 1 odds. As for you ‘calling’ out Todd, who the hell are you? If you aren’t Jargal you need to keep it to yourself, try and stay professional as well as educated. I agree the fight between them would be a good one, I believe Todd would outbox Mr. Jargal, but all of these rookies on here are building their records for a reason. It would be a very unwise career move for any of them to fight between each other. When they do, they should have their records built up and their skills polished, that’s when real money can be made and titles can be won. If you want to ‘rep’ yourself and prove how tough you or your fighter is, then go to the local tough man competition, or to your local bar and talk. Boxing is a business, this is not the hood where you just ‘call out’ someone out to fight because their FANS were bad mouthing you. Don’t act real tough when you’re the one having someone else back up your words (having Jargal fight Todd). You need to calm down and realize that this is an opinion poll and your fantasy of you thinking your going to push an unwise fight on anyone, especially Todd by ‘calling’ him out is simply ignorant.

Look at the comments section under the voting link on the main page. Almost all of them are from fans of "War Time" George Rivera! That shows you that there are a lot of different people voting for him and they are taking the time to leave their comments. "War Time" is the Rookie of the Year and he's going to score another big KO win this Saturday night!

I enjoy reading the comments on this website but normally I do not respond. I have been reading about who others think is the best rookie in the area. to me it does not matter who gets voted best rookie. Bayan Jargal and I will do what we have to do to make it.

The reality is what can any of these fighters do once they step out of the boundary of the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. My fighter may or may not do well or another fighter may or may not do well. It does not who is the best in the area. It matters who is the best in REALITY. And the reality is there are plenty of fighters outside of this area who our local fighters have to prove themselves against. Fighters from NY, Philly, California, Texas, etc.

When my guy can beat one of these guys that is what matters to me.

Honestly, I do not know much about Todd Wilson nor am I concerned. My concern is my guy.

Virginia has had ONE true world champion in its history. So, we all have alot of work to do instead of bashing each other.

I rest my case!

Willie,

Maybe Bayan will make it who knows? He's a good fighter and you're a good trainer. But Todd "White Lightning" Wilson would spank that ass Willie! I've got to tell you, he would spank that ass!

one more thing bayan jargal since he have been here have no idear he is being talk about, nor do i think he care he is a good kid,and i think he is a good prospect beating any body in va dont carry any weight,we have a few good prospects but thats it. as long as we protect are boxer and that what we all are doing in va,then we all will be ok until we take that next big step up,then you me and any one else can talk, right now we cait say a word to we beat someone with a name,dc and maryland prove them self we have not yet

I hear you Willie. Who wrote your first post? It's a little different from your second. Bayan is a good fighter, keep up the good work. I heard Orazio is coming back and you also have Tracey Brewer. That's a nice group of guys to train/manage. Good job.

How did Rivera get on this list
he doesn't live around the belteay
and he got knocked unconcious last february by charles Norwood on one of the left hook shows in winchester. If he belongs on this list certainly Charles Norwood does also.Gary although your list is impressive I can't understand why you would include Rivera without Norwood on the list.
Neither live around the beltway but
Norwood fought on two of a beltway promoters cards this year if that was your criteria for including Rivera.

Rivera just did not get knocked out, he got knocked the fuck out in front of over 1000 boxing fans. God Damn that was funny as shell! He fell right on his face.

KO'd once. He eventually get KO'd again.

Norwood would knock his ass out again and again.

George Rivera is a good person. He is friendly and nice to everyone. I wish him only the best. Charles Norwood is a gentleman too - he and George are good friends now and spar together when their schedules allows. Norwood apparently has a tough one this Saturday in Mackey. If he wins this one, he deserves an easy fight next. Not many guys have started their career against four undefeated fighters and one who was 4-1. Good luck on Saturday Charles.

I agree Rivera is not from the Beliway area. You may have to change the sites name "Boxing Along the BELTWAY"

Anonymous said...

What time is it?? What TIME is it?? What time is it??
"It's Murrrrrdockkkkkk time!" Good Luck Mr. Mackey!

Anonymous said...

Digital has included "WAR TIME" George Rivera because he's fougth in the Beltway area, he has ties to a promoter that's put on shows in the Beltway area, and it's Digital's site - he can do damn well what he pleases. Ease up on Digital, this man puts in all kinds of time writing on this blog for the sake of the boxing public in this area. And you're going to complain about something he does? What a short sighted person you are.

A lot of people have talked about Bayan Jargal vs. Todd Wilson. But how about this one: "War Time" George Rivera vs. "The Golden Greek" Elias Bouliabasis! They are very close in weight, Rivera is a jr. middle and Elias is a middleweight. In fact, The Greek is fighting one of Rivera's vanquished foes, Lawrence Jones, in December. Based on what I've seen of Elias, I think Rivera gets him.
