Pearson Stopped in Ninth Round!

Capitol Heights, MD lightweight Lamont "Bay" Pearson was stopped in the ninth round by former WBA Super Featherweight champion Joel Casamayor in Phoenix, AZ. Pearson fought well early, but the former champion got going midway through and forced Pearson to stop boxing at 44 seconds of the ninth round.

I saw the fight on ESPN2-Pearson did pretty well, but one BIG problem (and the announcers mentioned this a lot), was Pearson tended to cover up WAY too much (IMO)-he's gotta work on that-defense is important, but you've also gotta know when to throw punches (though it worked okay, at the beginning, against Casamayor, who, the announces said, loved to counterpunch rather than be the aggressor).

I really wanted Bay to win but once again, another DC/MD fighter who cannot beat the next level. Same story with Joppy, Holmes, and Mitchell.

I thought Lamont did well, overall. Joe, I think the doctor actually stopped the bout, but I will take a better look.

As far as DC/MD fighters not stepping up, once again, I think you have to define what you mean by "stepping up."

If you look at what Eric Aiken did in winning the IBF Featherweight title on short notice, that's an example of stepping up.

If you look at what Tony Thompson did against Dominic Guinn, a guy many people considered "the next great American heavyweight," That's an example of stepping up.

If you look at what Emmanuel Nwodo did against a former regional titleholder last Saturday, that's an example of stepping up.

The difference between Nwodo's performance and the other two was that Nwodo was considered the favorite in that bout. Although many people here thought Thompson would beat Guinn, Tony was brought in as an opponent, as was Mouse.

That is par for the course for a lot of DC fighters, they are the underdog. Joppy, Holmes and Mitchell were all underdogs when they faced the likes of Trinidad, Hopkins and Tszyu. The odds were against them from the start.

If you look at the way Joppy and Holmes, especially, won their first titles, they were underdogs. Joppy traveled to Shinji Takehara's home country and took his belt. Only Mitchell, when he beat Khalid Rahliou and Mark Johnson when he knocked out Francisco Tejedor, were the favorites going in.

I am no longer drinking the Kool-aid about our boxers not stepping up, and quite honestly, I'm tired of hearing it. First you have to define what stepping up actually means.

And as for Nwodo, he may have been the favorite, but he didn't just win, he dominated that fight. And Digital, what abour Pearson's fighting style-do you think he covers up too much?

Exactly, Ross. That was the reason for Pearson's defensive posture late in the fight.

Normally, Pearson doesn't cover up that much, but the injury limited his offense.

Digital-
You said Pearson doesn't usually cover up that much, but it looked like he was doing it throughout the fight.

Pearson is a good defensive fighter, ACW. When you are limited offensively as Pearson was with the injured hand, you try to compensate by using more defensive skills.

Yes Pearson was covering up a lot, but that was primarily due to the fact he was injured throughout the latter part of the bout.

That's probably true, but even during the first few rounds, and the announcers mentioned this, he seemed to cover up a lot, not being aggressive. Oh well, tough loss anyway. Think Pearson'll be able to bounce back?

OK his hand was hurt. Well, that is now the third fight and it's time for him to retire because the hand is not getting better. And the guy who said Pearson would beat Diego needs to see a shrink! No way on Pearson's best day does he beat Corrales! In fact, it will be more than just his hand hurting if ever does face DC. And I like the kid very much!

DC fans need to be honest and just admit that your fighters cannot beat A level comp ever!

Pearson lost to Peden and Casamayor. Ok hand problems! So what!

Mitchell got cleaned out by Kostya and Floyd Mayweather. A level. But I am sure you guys will say his fight with Reggie Green was an A level fighter.

Joppy gets murdered by Tito, Hopkins and Taylor. But he beats an old man in Duran. A level right? NOT!

Holmes beats Cherfi and Robert Allen. A level right? Not.

Gets blown out by Hopkins and Karmazin!

Corley beat Bailey. A level right? Not!

Losses to Mayweather, Cotto, and Judah.

Your fighters cannot beat the next level. I like what Tony The Tiger did but when he really steps up, don't bet on him to win either.

Aiken I wish the kid the best but if he fights the Ghost, you will not have any champions.

Hey here is another one. Derrel Coley. Beats the likes of C+ fighters, but gets destroyed when he finally steps up to face Oscar De La Hoya.

That is the proof and no disputing it.... SRL was the best of the best from here. And Mark Johnson as well. It was too bad Too Sharp could not get a big fight to really show how great he was in his prime.

On my last post, I meant to say Holmes beat Robert McCrakken. A level right? NOT!

I don't know if Pearson can come back because of the hands, ACW! This is indeed the third time that his hands were hurt against a top-level boxer. If this is what happens everytime he faces the best, then it may not be for him.

Sometimes announcers say things that they see that night. They have not seen the true history of a boxer. I have seen Pearson fight at least 10 times and know his tendencies a little better than Tessitore or Atlas.
Lamont's had a solid career and is one of the nicest people I have ever met, but it just may not be in the cards for him.

Hey Anonymous, first of all, why are you running down the Beltway Boxers without putting a name to it?

Two: As a point of fact, Karmezin only beat Holmes by majority decision. One judge had that bout a draw. Hardly a blow out.

You must be from Bama-More. You seem very jealous of DC boxers.
The truth is Dc Boxers have always beat Bama-More boxers. Even in the amatures. Sorry, but it has always been that way and will always be that way. Please get a life and stop hatin-FOOL!!!

People keep mentioning the tiger. First of all every oppurtunity he gets to step up he takes it. Promoters dont want to risk putting there fighters up against him, its too much of a unkown. The tiger hs been waiting and waiting, you naysayers want to count him out before hes out of the gate...HATERS....HATERS...hes been out of work at periods for 12 months because no one wanted a tall southpaw as an opponent....Shoot were fighting for the milk baby....he hasnt turned anyone down...Tony just hasnt been chosen...
