Edgewood, MD welterweight Emanuel "Tranzformer" Taylor was stopped in the fifth round Saturday night by Argentinian Lucas Matthysse at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. The bout was part of the Pay-Per-View portion of Canelo Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. card.
Taylor was rocked late in the first round by a Matthysse right hand and continued his onslaught in the second round. In the third, Matthysse dropped Taylor with another right hand after suffering a cut over his right eye because of an accidental head butt. By the fifth round, Taylor had no chance to get back into the bout as Matthysse landed solid shots that forced referee Jay Nady to stop the contest at 2:21.
Taylor's record drops to 20-5, 14 KO's. Matthysse, who was returning after a 19-month absence, is now 38-4, 35 KO's.
