Open Division of Washington Golden Gloves Opens With Excitement; Junior Champions Crowned!

A packed, standing-room-only crowd watched a spirited beginning to the Open Division and a number of Junior Champions crowned at the Washington Golden Gloves Saturday night at the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center in Palmer Park, MD.

In the open bout most fans came to see, Patrick Harris of the Headbangers Gym defeated Drayvontay Speed-Rawls of No Xcuse by decision in a spirited 141-pound contest that had fans of both camps screaming and on their feet throughout the contest.  Harris, who is co-trained by his father, Patrick "Boogie" Harris,  seemed to be the busier boxer especially in the second and third rounds.  Speed-Rawls's uncle, by the way, is former National Golden Gloves champion Eugene "Sonny" Speed.

In the only other Open bout of the night, Gary Antonio Russell of Enigma Boxing scored an RSC-3 over Cesar Rojas of Sugar Ray Leonard Gym in a 123-pound matchup.

In the Junior Division, four champions were crowned after actual boxing matches.  Quincey Williams of Tony's Gym won a decision over Jacob Matthews of Enigma to win the 9 Years, 70 Pounds title.  Kesean Bagwell of Charm City won the 10 Years, 70 Pounds championship by decision over Jordan Jones of Headbangers. Also, Ronnell Jackson of No Xcuse captured the 16 Years, 119 Pounds title with a decision over Cory Moore of Main Street and Keeshawn Williams, boxing unattached, won the 16 Years, 110 pound title with a win over Rasheed Wright of Headbangers.

9, 75 Pounds: Lawerence Malcolm (Enigma)
12-13, 100 Pounds: Siete Shuler (Langdon)
13-14, 115 Pounds: Andres Garbiray (Laurel Boxing Club)

A number of bouts were scratched last night because boxers did not make weight. I believe that bout was one of them.
