Still having difficulties with the audio on the Post-Fight Wrap-Up so I decided to jot down some more thoughts from the Keystone Boxing card at Rosecroft Raceway.
1. Jarrett Hurd has scored two knockouts in his last four contests. The one in this contest was as beautiful a knockout as you will ever see. It seemed to shock everyone in attendance with the sudden aspect of the blow. Hurd has shown a lot of improvement in the seven bouts he has had in 2013. This has been a solid year for the junior middleweight from Accokeek, MD.
2. Talked to Josh Elkins after his majority decision loss to Brandon Priest. Elkins showed me a badly damaged left hand which could explain why his jab was so ineffective throughout the contest. Elkins said he hurt his hand in the first round. Even with the bad hand, however, Elkins still had opportunities to win the bout, he just could not fully take advantage.
3. Elkins, the debuting Marq Johns and Larry Recio brought sizable and very vocal fan bases to the event. Johns was in a great contest with Stephon McIntyre that could have gone either way. Although the scores looked a little broad, the draw was the right call. Recio looked very solid tonight. Very accurate on his punches and broke down Brian Meadows.
4. The all-DC showdown between Joshua Davis and Hugh Hinds ended up being one-sided. Davis looked much improved from his last outing.
5. This card ends an outstanding year for the state of Maryland. The "Old Line State" regulated over 17 cards this year. That's a remarkable number considering in 2011, there were just 17 cards in the entire Beltway region. This is something we will talk more about in our year-end review at the end of this month.
Great year for Maryland professional boxing!
