Legendary Beltway Trainer Dave Jacobs Turns 80!

We don't celebrate many birthdays here but this one truly deserves a celebration.  Happy 80th birthday to legendary trainer Dave Jacobs.  Mr. Jacobs has worked with many local boxers over many years including Sugar Ray Leonard and Andrew Maynard just to name a short few.

One of the nicest men in this business deserves a strong celebration!

Happy birthday Mr. Jacobs!

When I was a journalism student at GWU I went to National Airport to cover Sugar Ray Leonard's triumphant return from the Marvin Hagler fight. I couldn't get the time of day from most of the people I spoke with because I wasn't yet a "real reporter."

But two of the key figures were exceedingly nice to me and gave lengthy interviews. One of those was Dave Jacobs (and the other was Charlie Brotman.)I needed those interview quotes to score a decent grade in my class, and that act of kindness was one I have never forgotten.

In never having a pro fight Mr. Jacobs was very reluctant to work with me on a Pro level.
After much hard work on my part, Mr. Jacobs gave me a chance and I really appreciated what I learned in the process. In not becoming a champion boxer, Mr. Jake helped me become a champion in life. You made a difference.
Happy Birthday Mr. Jacobs.
Have 80 more if you like.
