Abingdon, MD 201+pounder Calvin Countess may have been a late addition to the Junior Olympics National Championship roster, but he ended up being the only boxer from the Beltway region to win a national title at the Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, AL!
Countess defeated Elijah Grady of New Town, ND by a 14-9 decision to win the 201+ pound division. Countess was pretty impressive throughout the tournament winning his first bout by a 19-2 score. His semi-final win was a 15-13 decision followed by his championship win on Friday.
Four other Beltway Boxers won silver medals at the tournament with three of the four losing their championship bids by one point. Keeshawn Williams of DC won the silver medal in the 95-pound division, falling to Christopher Colbert of Brooklyn, NY, 16-15. Another DC boxer -- Jalonte Cole -- lost to another Brooklyn boxer -- Christian Bermudez -- by a 13-12 decision in the 125-pound weight class. Also, Jason Bell of District Heights, MD lost a 23-22 decision to Jazavian Palmer of Lubbock, TX in the 165-pound division.
Also, in the 176-pound title bout, Daquan Johnson of Capitol Heights, MD lost a 12-8 decision to Elvis Figueroa of New Haven, CO.
