Beltway Boxers Receiving Substantial TV Time!

Beltway Boxing Fans will be able to see a number of local boxers on national TV in the next few weeks.  Here is the schedule as we know it:

Saturday, June 30 -- Gary Russell, Jr. will be a part of a Showtime ShoBox tripleheader from the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA.  Russell (19-0, 11 KO's) will take on Christopher Perez (23-2, 14 KO's).

Friday, July 6 -- Maurice "Freight Train" Byarm will be in a co-feature contest on ESPN2 at the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.  Byarm (13-1-1, nine KO's) will take on undefeated Magomed Abdulsalamov of Oxnard, CA by way of Russia (14-0, 14 KO's) in a 10-round contest for the WBC USNBC Silver Heavyweight title.

Saturday, July 7 -- Tony "The Tiger" Thompson (36-2, 24 KO's) will challenge Wladimir Klitschko (57-3, 50 KO's) at the Stade De Suisse in Bern, Switzerland on the EPIX Network.  Four titles are on the line:  The WBA Super World Heavyweight, The IBF Heavyweight title, The WBO Championship and the IBO title.

Saturday, July 14 -- Hasim "The Rock" Rahman (50-7-2, 41 KO's) will go for his third world title when he faces undefeated WBA champion Alexander Povetkin (24-0, 16 KO's) in a bout that has now found a home at the Sporthalle Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany.  EPIX was slated to televise this bout as well but since the venue has changed, there is no official word that EPIX will keep that commitment.

Friday, August 3 -- Ty Barnett (20-2-1, 13 KO's) will take on undefeated Mercito Gesta of San Diego, CA by way of the Phillippines (25-0-1, 13 KO's) in a 10-round bout in Las Vegas, NV that will air on ESPN2.  The bout will be held at the Texas Station Casino.

Maurice "Freight Train" Byarm and Tony "The Tiger" Thompson are the only two really worth mentioning. In fact, are the only two that will not duck any other. Furthermore, the others listed will most likely come up with an injury this week calling a cancellation just like always. Real fighters are from Philly!!!

Russell Jr.’s opponent in this fight is 23-2 Christopher Perez, a Mexican who is rated 67th according to boxrec.com. Perez has never fought outside of Mexico, he has lost 2 of his last 6 (one of which was to a fighter who was 9-9 at the time, his last two victories were against fighters that were 0-2 and 3-4-1 respectively, and now he is facing 2008 Semi-Olympian Gary Russell Jr. Russell Jr. whose fights last, on average, about 3 and a half rounds per contest; I wouldn’t expect this one to go much past that.
