Second Annual Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic Returns to DC February 7!

The second annual Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic amateur boxing card returns to DC on Saturday, February 7 at the Westin Washington, D.C. City Center Hotel on 1400 M Street NW.

A team from Belfast, Ireland will battle a DC Select squad for the second consecutive year. The Belfast-Beltway Boxing Project (BBBP) is a Washington, D.C. based non-profit group dedicated to providing cultural exchange and international amateur athletic competition through support of at-risk youth in the metropolitan Washington, D.C area and Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The group held its first charitable tournament in January 2008 when 20 boxers between the ages of 11-17 participated in the event. Prior to the match, both teams entered the ring, received introductions and exchanges gifts with their opponents. Commemorative belts were awarded to all participants.

In addition to raising money to provide equipment for the boxing clubs, the BBBP is also working towards providing sponsorship for at-risk D.C. youth to participate in local programs through D.C. recreation centers. The BBBP's other goal is to offer the same cultural exchange experience to a group of D.C. boxers, and plans are being made for the city of Belfast to host a team from Washington, D.C. in 2009.

The DC Select team will be coached by Gary Russell, Sr. and will feature boxers from a number of gyms in the area including Keystone, Midtown Youth Academy, Supreme Defence, Diamonds in the Rough and Enigma Boxing. Among the boxers slated to be on the DC Select team are Xavier Ward and Chauncey Anderson from Supreme Defence, Midtown's Cornelius Whitlock and Adam Mitchell of Diamonds in the Rough, who was voted the Outstanding Boxer of the 2008 Mayor's Cup.
