Lange Wins in Comeback; Rivera Defeats Nicklow!

Great Falls, VA junior middleweight Jimmy Lange made a successful return after a 17-month absence by winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Grover Wiley of Omaha, NE in front of an announced crowd of 5,817 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.

Lange used a precise jab and was able to land strong body shots throughout the contest. Lange dropped Wiley with body shots in the fourth round. Wiley was a game opponent but the jab was the ultimate difference in the bout. Judge Jerry Payne saw a shutout for Lange, 100-89. Judge Brian Costello scored the bout, 99-90 while judge Greg Coleman saw the contest 98-92.

Lange is now 29-3-2, 20 KO's while Wiley falls to 30-12-1, 14 KO's.

The co-feature saw Charlottesville, VA junior middleweight George "War Time" Rivera even the score with Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow by winning an eight-round unanimous decision.

Rivera used more lateral movement and was able to land jabs with regularity. Nicklow seemed to have trouble cutting the ring off and did not land punches with his normal intensity. Rivera used the same game plan as in the first bout in September but executed it better this time around.

Rivera's record rises to 9-3, three KO's while Nicklow loses for the first time in his pro career and his record is now 19-1-1, seven KO's.

In other bouts on the card, Hyattsville, MD-based junior welterweight Carlos "El Perro" Cisneros lost a unanimous decision Curtis "KO" Smith of Atlanta, GA. The scheduled eight-round contest was stopped during the sixth round when an accidental headbutt caused a gash on the forehead of Cisneros. The bout went to the scorecards where Smith got the decision. Cisneros is now 9-16-1, six KO's while Smith is now 9-4, four KO's.

Ashburn, VA featherweight Yieta Johnson won his first pro contest by scoring a second-round TKO over "Tattoo" Tom Mitchell of Centreville, VA. Johnson used crisp jabs to pummel Mitchell, forcing referee William Johnson to stop the bout at 1:54 of the round. While the fans did not get the inspirational win in the record books, Mitchell, who was led to the ring by his daughter, Shayla, won over many hearts throughout the evening. Johnson is now 1-2, one KO.

DC middleweight Luther "Sugarman" Smith was stopped in the first round by Jimmy "The Dream" LeBlanc. LeBlanc landed a solid right hand that knocked Smith down. Smith was still wobbly and referee Johnson stopped the contest at 1:46. LeBlanc's record is now 12-15-4, four KO's while Smith is 22-8-2, 12 KO's and has been knocked out in his last five bouts.

PERSONAL COMMENT: Luther Smith should not fight anymore and NO COMMISSION, whether it's along the Beltway or anywhere else, should not allow him to fight anymore.

The opening bout was a good one as Arlington, VA super middleweight Tracey Brewer remained undefeated with a four-round unanimous decision over a very game Calvin "Shotgun" Aughtrey of DC. Brewer is now 3-0, two KO's while Aughtrey is now 0-3.

The bout between Thomas "KO" Snow and Darrell Martin was scratched at the last minute.

First off, thanks to Discombobulating Jones for getting me Paul "Punisher" Williams's autograph.

BREWER-AUGHTREY: GOOD fight. "Shotgun" looked dominated in the 1st 2 rounds, but game back well, just not enough.

SMITH-LEBLANC: Yeah, I agree with you Digital, Luther should probably hang it up.

MITCHELL-JOHNSON: My goodness, Tattoo had a large fan section. And God bless him, but it just wasn't enough :(

CISNEROS-SMITH: Right victor, but let's just say I've seen better.

RIVERA-NICKLOW: Odd fight, good fight, WAY too much clinching.

LANGE-WILEY: Fight of the night (the first fight comes in a pretty close second). Lange definitely deserved to win, but Wiley is TOUGH. There were several times when I thought he might've been ready to be TKOd, but he kept coming back.

Fun night.

Jessie i told u not to give him a rematch. you let them fools talk u into that even knowing he was going to beat u down again. u need to stick to guys on your own level. u cannot and will not ever be the fighter that george is. i must admit though that u hung in there even though george was taxing that ass all night long.

First of all ,this was a first class Boxing Show one that most people really enjoyed I think Jimmy's fight was a good come back victory for him.I think Luther had a good career but it is time to call it quits,if any comission lets him fight again the should be an investagation, the fight with Tatto was inspirational but it goes to show Boxing is not a step into it sport you have to be trained an taught to be a Boxer, the fight with George and Jessie was ok ,team Rivera fought an ugly but SMART fight,Nicklow and his team should call George out right away and try to break the tie.I thought that the most exciting an competitive fightwas Tracy and Calvin very entertainig I see Brewer going a long way if managed right..

The rematch Rivera-Nicklow the original match was for the east coast champ belt...what happen to the belt? Was George robbed again?

Anonymous said...

We all know who's Rivera's main trainer. La Madre, strong, confident and ready for WAR!! LOL

Great fight George you fought a SMART fight. You deserved to win.

Lange GREAT COME BACK!!

THE FANS EXPECTED MORE OF A GRUDGE COME BACK WITH NICKLOW AND RIVERA. GOOD FIGHT GUYS!! DID GEORGE GET THE EAST COST CHAMPIONSHIP BELT? THAT IS WHAT THE REMATCH WAS FOR RIGHT?

Anonymous said...

LANGE-WILEY: LANGE HAD A GREAT COME BACK!! IT TRUELY WAS THE FIGHT OF THE NIGHT!

Anonymous said...

the belt was purchased from Title boxing and East Coast was ingraved by Baltimore Engravers on Pratt st.
The belt means nothing!

Anonymous said...

good fight george.you made us proud you did your thing.stay focus cause this is just the beginning of better things to come.

Anonymous said...

Let me get this right.are you trying to say that nicklow had a bootleg east coast belt? are you pulling my joint? nahh i can`t believe that shit..now come to think of it I did see that belt at wal-mart for 12.99. does it come in silver too??

Gary Digital Williams said...

The East Coast title was a creation of Jake Smith. It did not carry over to last night's card.

Anonymous said...

well actually all the belts out there started like that.... somebody bought a belt, gave it a name, and that's how it started. Maybe that belt could become something in the years to come. give em' a break.

Anonymous said...

Yea I agree check Jesse's record. It's like he fought all bums and then rematched them.wtf, I saw George fight on tv and he looked soft as a cotton.Where are the real fighters.

Anonymous said...

Oh really is that how that title came about? so if i were to make up some type of championship belt and named it lets say THE BEST OF THE NORTH,SOUTH,EAST AND WEST BELT.then maybe some day it`ll become something...DON`T BE A IDIOT.

The funny thing about life is that "The people that critize the most are the ones who NEVER TOOK A CHALLENGE"!

Anonymous said...

Rivera, has POWER in his punches and speed..he needs to utilize his boxing skills better. He needs a better training team with dedication to his career.

Anonymous said...

The Beast and War Time are both talented young men. War Time is fresh in his career and is doing a good job. The Beast record speaks for itself.
Critical and negative thinking is an illness.

Lang looked GREAT! Wiley hung on in there and proved he can hang!!

Critical and negative thinking is an illness

Well critical thinking from a capable mind can really be good,

Anonymous said...

Linda thats critical as in criticizing, not cirtical as in necessary. I think you're referring to constructive thinking...

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

No...I was referring to what was cited...critical thinking. I know the poster meant to say constructive thinking... that was my point. No biggie.

Nicklow was cheated and robbed. George should have been DQ'd for excessive holding. Nicklow won the fight not Rivera. Nicklow went to the lion's den and proved he was the better fighter. Nicklow is a warrior and a future world champion. Don't let this get you down Jessie just get right back to what you have been doing, you won the fight and they took it from you. George is not in Nicklow's class they robbed Jessie to try and rebirth Georges sub-par career. Jessie is the real East Coast Champion and he holds the belt. Don't worry Jessie your big title shot is coming. As for Rivera your's is not. The Beast is the Champ in the East. Wartime lost 4times. Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow 20-0 still undefeated.Poor George "Wartime" Rivera 8-4. That should be the headline.

You are not the gatekeeper of this blog and I have as much, if not more right to weighin with my thoughts. What's your beef with me malcontent that you are attacking me of all people personally? Did I step on your tinker toes or usurp one of your stupid anonymous accusations?

Anonymous said...

Linda, you act like you are the gatekeeper. That is the problem. You do not have a clue but you act like you know everything about this sport. What is your boxing background?

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

This is Gary's blog, if HE should ever ask me to not post or in anyway show any displeasure I would be no more.

If you think about it you are perpetuating my posts, so that is on you. If you want to engage me in a conversation or ask my opinion fine. Ask it. If you don't want to see posts like the last few then don't purposely agitate. I have never claimed to be an expert or know probably even a fraction of what most people on here know. I love the sport, I do know some and I, like you and anyone who wants to comment can. So really anon. what's your problem with me? If you are going to bring it then come on.

Anonymous said...

You are correct. This is a public forum and any and everybody can write something on this blog( LIKE YOU DO ON EVERY POST). Be ready for people to respond back to your greenhorn comments about topics you have no clue. You are so bias about have the stuff you say and always seem to have a agenda(PERSONAL). So what is your boxing back ground again? Oh yeah, your pictures SUCK.

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

That's all you got?

You are the only one who seems to be out of the loop that I was never anything less than a greenhorn.
My photos are my work. You are the only person who has ever said that to me. But since you don't have the grit to sign your name who knows what your creds are to judge my work?
Since you don't have the balls to go toe to toe with me who cares? Not me.

First of all, Linda can post on this blog about any subject at any time. She is someone who has followed the boxers and the boxing in this area faithfully and with intelligence.

Many times, she has a better seat than most people who comment here on the blog and she, like many others, is learning the sport.

Unlike many others, however, she has built up a positive rapport with many of the people in the Beltway Boxing scene and many have applauded her for her photography work.

The negative comments about her come out of pure stupidity and ignorance and should be tossed into the nearest garbage can!

linda u r the best. the hell with that jealous clown. keep up the good work and the great comments.

Anonymous said...

Linda,
you're work is excellent!
I appreciate your photography it is beautiful and I thank you for taking such photos!
as for the person who said that nicklow was robbed...he was not nicklow or however you spell his name did that to make it look like he was being held because he knew he was shorter and he could keep going underneath his arm to make it look like George was holding...and nicklow did not win the fight he barely got any punches in..he is not even that good get over it. his record is 19-0 because he never fought out of his hometown and it was his first time saturday night and there he proved that he can only be at home to win and definately knew he could not cheat in this one!! so yes nicklow keep fighting at home and cheating your way through the boxing career, you won't get anywhere doing that!

George keep up the good work you did good on saturday night, it was your time to shine!!! :-)

I know that I missed the main barrage of comments and I'll keep mine brief. But I had a couple of bullets to add.

1) To reinterate the obvious, Luther Smith has some good bouts to his name and needs to retire before he gets hurt. With the luxury of hindsight from my armchair, allowing Saturday's fight in the first place was questionable judgement at best.

His corner seemed to know it too, demonstrated by the speed in which they threw in the towel. (I couldn't tell if the ref stopped the fight on his own or saw the towel land first, but that's of little consequence.) I couldn't help but think metaphorically. When the towel dropped down, the corner knew, as did just about everybody else, that they were lowering the curtain on a long and proud career.

2)For a while I had mixed feelings about the Tattoo Mitchell fight, as I do whenever somebody enters the ring for not-entirely-boxing reasons. Just as with JP Flaim of The Junkies, it demonstrated that even the most mediocre professional fighter is a highly skilled professional.

But unlike JP Flaim, I thought that Tattoo showed some promise and I wouldn't mind seeing him again, especially with as much fan support and as great a cause as he had.

3) Something that wasn't much discussed was Jimmy Lange falling through the ropes and onto the ring apron. That could have been catastrophic and it sure didn't look like that bottom rope was very tight. I often see officials and others leaning against the upper ropes to test the tension, but I don't see the lower ropes inspected as much.

Is there anything that prevents them from installing an additional rope, like they do with boxing/MMA joint cards?

4) And finally, the previous comment, JESSIE HAS DECIDED TO RETIRE! He will not be boxing again, has decided to open gyn in B-More County with long time friend.

Who is vvdoc, and Gary, can you confirm this?

Anonymous said...

WARTIME I thought you fought a smart fight. You will excel in the world of boxing. Just stay focus and keep your eyes on the prize. Linda you do take the best pictures.

Anonymous said...

Chris to respond to you. The ref called the bout and then the towel came flying in. Now for Lange and the bottom rope. You never want a tight bottom rope because a fighter can fall and if his neck gets caught in that rope it would be a serious injury. So refs do inspect the rope and make sure it will go all the way down to the canvas. Also when Jimmy was knocked through the ropes his father helped to push him back in. If it had been a championship fight he would have been DQed for outside help getting back in the ring.

Anonymous said...

That's wrong about being DQ'ed for being helped back in the ring. That's because Jimmy wasn't knocked down and through the ropes, he just was in the ropes and fell through them, a punch didn't put him there.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Anon., for the explanation. As a layman, it never would have occured to me that the various ropes were purposely strung with different tensions.

Regarding the DQ issue, I was thinking the same thing as the previous poster, that since it was a slip not a punch that sent Jimmy through the ropes, Johnny Lange's assistace might have been viewed differently.

But on that same theme. What would have happened if that were a punch during a championship bout and Johnny broke Jimmy's fall to prevent him from rolling off the ring apron and landing head-first on the concrete? If Johnny had broken the fall and then threw up his hands, allowing Jimmy to return to the ring on his own power, would this still have been a possible DQ?

This is where I would expect the ref to use common sense to distinguish preventing a possibly serious injury from rendering unfair assistance.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely! But you make a good point about a boxing ring being potentially unsafe. I have thought for years that a ring apron should be sufficently large enough to prevent a boxer from falling out of the ring and on to the floor. The apron should be at least 4 feet if not 6 feet all the way around the ring.
