One of the true legendary and important names of Beltway Boxing passed away yesterday.
Truman E. Tuttle died in Lanham, MD at the age of 81. Anyone who came through the amateur ranks in this area over the past 40 years definitely should know the name. At the time of his passing, Mr. Tuttle served as president of the Washington, DC region chapter of Golden Gloves. During his career, Mr. Tuttle also served as president of Golden Gloves of America for a total of six years. According to the Gazette newspaper, Mr. Tuttle was the head coach of Hillcrest Boxing during the 1970's and 1980's.
Mr. Tuttle's involvement with boxing took him to every state in the union and to 17 foreign countries. Three of his sons -- Fred, Billy and Charlie -- were amateur champions and boxed professionally.
My condolences to the Tuttle family. I met Mr. Tuttle about 15 years ago covering one of Fred's pro bouts. He was truly dedicated to the sport and its growth of boxing in this area. He will truly be missed.
The viewing for Mr. Tuttle will be on Wednesday, November 28 from 2-4 PM and from 7-9 PM at the Beall Funeral Home, 6512 Crain Highway (Route 301) in Bowie, MD. The funeral service will also be at Beall Funeral Home on Thursday, November 29 at noon with the internment to follow at Cheltenham Veterans National Cemetery at 2 PM.

Gary,
It's great that you constantly remember people in boxing that have passed such as Mr Tuttle. No one in the area does more for the local boxing scene then you do.
Thank you for the kind words! It's people like Mr. Tuttle that have made this area as good as it is. They must be remembered!
From, Coach Hal,
Mr Tuttle's passing is a big loss to the boxing community. It is hard to comprehend the impact he had on so many young peoples lives. He was committed to the end helping kids through the sport of boxing. I will remember him as a someone that I used as a mentor even if he did not know it. He goes now to a place where the gloves really are golden. God Bless.
