Special Attraction Added to December 9 Virginia Card!

I have known about this for awhile folks, but I wanted to wait until the announcement was officially made this morning.

Those of you who are fans of the popular radio show "The Junkies" on WJFK-FM 106.7 already know this, but JP (John-Paul Flaim) of the Junkies will make his professional boxing debut on the December 9 show at the Patriot Center. JP made the announcement on the show this morning, to the complete surprise of his co-workers Cakes, EB and Lurch.

I know many of you are saying "that's silly!" Before you say that completely, let me say that JP will not be fighting another celebrity or a Playboy Bunny. He will be fighting an actual pro boxer (Jay Watts of Virginia Beach, VA who is 1-8, one KO.) He is training with actual boxers (his trainer is former boxer Willie "The Heat" Taylor) in an actual gym.

Before we take this too seriously, let's be real about this. This is a clever way to sell tickets. That's all it is. I know people will get on this and say, "this just cheapens the sport!" It's not that big a deal, folks. In all the years I've been covering this sport in this area, it is the best way I can remember to have a mainstream radio outlet get involved with a local boxing card.

I heard the announcement today and I think the promotion just sold a boatload of tickets just with the way the announcement was done.

We'll have more in the weeks to come.

JP you should have gone with a different trainer than Willie "no heat" Taylor. Willie does not look after his fighters. He had Jose Almanzar, a very good prospect, who should fight at 135-140, he had him fighting at 154 against good fighters. If your seroius get a different trainer then Willie.

Honestly I am surprised he is messing with a white boy. he got racist tendencies. Good luck

Willie Taylor has a professional record of 3-22 he fought 25 times and won 3 of them. He was also knocked out 17 times. 9 of those coming in the first round. I sure hope JP does better than he does...

James, I don't know where you got your information from but it does not match the information on Boxrec.com. And since I witnessed in person a number of the bouts listed under Taylor's name on Boxrec, I'm inclined to believe them.

Taylor did have a record well under .500, however it wasn't as bad as you say.

Taylor's record was 13-23-1, eight KO's. Among the people Taylor faced during his career were three former world champions -- William Joppy, Buddy McGirt and Frankie Randall. He also fought notable contenders like Lonnie Beasley, "Rockin'" Rodney Moore and Larry Barnes.

Taylor fought a number of Beltway Boxers over his career. Not only did he take on Joppy but he also faced Keely Thompson, Antonio DeBarros, Greg Keys, Calvin Hardy, Chuck Pit Bull" Sturm, Les "White Lightning" Johnson, Tyrone Haywood, Reuben "Ratman" Bell and Gerry "Rock" Payne.

Taylor was stopped 10 times in his career, only ONE of those (against Keely Thompson) was in the first round.

That's the REAL DEAL!

I just looked at Box rec and perhaps u r right. I was not far off though. I apolgeyes, i got my imfo from ABC boxing. Is Keely Thompson the same guy that Shamba mitchell knocked out???

Hey James Grant,
Willie Taylor fought a lot of good, and some great fighters, and gave many of them a really good fight. It could easily be argued that he beat Buddy McGirt when McGirt was in the midst of his comeback after losing to Meldrick Taylor. He had a number of losses to start his career, but rounded it out with some very exciting fights.

You are obviously either very young, or just know very little about boxing in this area. Try doing some research before you post next time.

And no, it is not "perhaps you are right"...Digital was right, try acknowledging that.

Hey gary, asked chris m. How come he hasn't try to parr Holyfield up with tony the tiger for his upcoming fight in january.....???Chris should give some local fighters a shot...Tony cant seem to make a fight...Or does he know what i know ...tony would beat the pants off evander...he would realize actually how old he really is?????

In actuality, I've just found out that Chris is doing the matchmaking for Anthony and Lamont Peterson.

As far as Tony, he is working, I believe, with Sharmba Mitchell and his group so I don't know how much Middendorf can do with him.

Tony is going to have a tough time getting good bouts because he is a tall, powerful SOUTHPAW

I spoke to Chris yesterday. He is doing the match-making for the Peterson Brothers. Shelly Finkel was very upset with the peterson brothers performance, which in return caused them not to sell tickets. He has sold their contract to a local Washington DC Sports Bar owner. I still beleive both Peterson brothers will become world champions. It may take more time now, but they both will make it happen. Good Luck to both of them. We will now be able to see these brothers fight locally. Im sure they will sell the place out here at home.

Max is that true. Where are you getting this info from.

JP Willie was a bum you let him train you. You are going to need to get a better trainer. You are fighting a trash can

Hey Max, I just read the Tenn. Times. I see what you are talking about concerning the Peterson Brothers. Who knows Don King might pick them up now. I still think they will make it. it will just take alittle longer.

Gary Digital Williams said...

Just spoke to some very KNOWLEDGABLE people in the Peterson's camp.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO truth to this rumor about the contracts being sold to anybody!

I will have full results shortly, but both guys remained undefeated with relatively easy victories last night.
