Dave Baggs writes that former three-time world champion Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson has challenged a Canadian boxer named Steve Molitor.
Here is the story:
As Steve Molitor heads overseas to challenge for the vacant IBF Super Bantamweight title, many fans of the Canadian Kid will have their fingers crossed in hopes that the Canuck returns home a world champion. While Molitor continues to impress even the harshest of critics, one person he has failed to impress is former 3-time world champion Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson. While Johnson likes Molitor chances of returning holding the IBF strap under arm, Johnson believes that the Sarnia, Ontario boxer is undeserving of the opportunity of fighting for the title.
"I think (Steve) Molitor has a good chance to win the World title but he doesn't impress me." Johnson told FightNews Canada. "He's a C class fighter. He hasn't fought anybody. Who has he fought to deserve a title shot? Nobody! If you ask me, he's a bum!"
Should Molitor be victorious in South Africa, there is talk of his first title defense being held on Canadian soil (Niagara Falls perhaps). Johnson, the former IBF Flyweight, IBF Super Flyweight, and WBO Super Flyweight champion, would have no trouble heading north of the US border if he was given the opportunity to share the ring as Molitor's opponent that evening.
"I will come to Canada and beat him anyday, anytime!"
Johnson did mention that he was planning to join Diego Corrales camp in the near future. We'll keep you posted.

i give mark a great chance if he goes to camp at 122 i think every great fighter has one left i think this will be a easy win for mark because steve is not a strong puncher mark only has problem with puncher at age now what do you think gary
I like Mark a lot, but this is crazy. He needs to stay retired!
Mark too sharp johnson you is my favorite fighter I wish and hope you get another world title you was the only fighter that didn't get big headed you is still the same person
Yes toosharp give it your all go out how you want if you feel it go for it if this one you get the title promise you will retire

Quite frankly, I don't know much about Molitor. I am in contact with Dave Baggs of Fightnews Canada and he and I may be working on a joint story about this.

Personally, I think this is a risk for Mark. I have been hearing, however, that this guy Molitor can look good one minute and look terrible the next. That's a good bout for Mark.
Mark is done as a fighter and folks here should stop encouraging him to come back. Let him go into the Hall of Fame.
hey gary this guy that too sharp called out is not fighting fir the title would too sharp fight him now or he was comming back just for the title can you get in touch with 2 and find out his point n this i would love to see him in the ring again and is that true that he is going to camp with deigo because i heard it was eric morealis let me know
Oh, what a fighter this guy was in his time. Man, he was GOOD. Anyways, yes...I do think and hope he stays retired. I don't think he ever beats the very 'top dogs' again. However, if he trains diligently, and fights no higher than 118 - there are many guys out there he can still compete with, and defeat.

gary when are you going to have too sharp on the show i would like to talk with him about whats been said about him because i have never seen himfight an i heard he was a great fighter an do you think he will go in the hall of fame i just look him up on box rec mark leave it the young guys i love what you have done for area
Mark has been interviewed on the audio portion of the blog twice. Feel free to go through the archives starting in January of 2006 for those interviews.

It's a shame you never got to see Mark fight in his championship prime. He was always on people's pound-for-pound list and had the likes of Danny Romero and Johnny Tapia scared to death of him!
Absolutely, Gary. A shame none of those fights happened, and that Mark never really got ANY 'big fights' between 112-118. I wouldn't vote Johnson in the hall personally, but he wasn't that far off. He CERTAINLY had hall of fame talent & ability, and had it not been for that 2-year layoff and a semi 'marquee' fight or two...(???) He easily could have. When he was at the top of his game, he was truly one of the P4P best. I think that he and Ricardo Lopez were two of the best and most 'underappreciated' fighters of the 90's.
* Also, had Johnson not been deducted two points against current top-10 P4P guy Rafael Marquez in 2001, he would have held a close split decision victory over him at 118 as well.
BTW- If Johnson does continue his career, it should be at 118. 122 is just a bit too much for him. Molitor isn't a big puncher and couldn't carry Mark's jockstrap in terms of his boxing skills , but at 122 he may just be too big and strong for him. Molitor is a true 122/126 pounder.
hey cruiserweight i agree with you mark was one of the best and i think this a winable fight for but ithink he should try if toney and kevin kelley can do it i think he can to with the right guy like steve molitor because hes not big puncher mark could win this fight and he do then he should retire so come on family lets get behind him
Yeah, if he comes in like he did for his last fight though (physically & mentally underprepared, and heart not completely in it) he should definetly rtetire.
* On second thought, with some of the borderline guys that have recently been inducted in the hall, Johnson may very well get in.

weight if mark mentally physical ready yes and i heard from close friend that eric morelas sent him home in one week so probaly is ready ham was mad because mark took the last fight because he didn't give himself enough time to lose the weight mark came down from 150 tomake 118 he beat himself did your hear how big he had got
Yeah, I did hear that. I think he may have been even heavier than that. No excuse for him to get THAT hvy. especially considering he's only about 5'3". I mean, if he wants to do that when he's retired - fine. But Mark - as long as he is continuing his career - should never get any heavier than 140. And he should give himself sufficient time to effectively make 118.
Anyways, like I said...I kinda wish he would retire, but if properly prepared...I do still think he could make some noise at bantam, and compete.
