Phipps Loses by Disqualification in Florida!

Baltimore heavyweight Jed "The Punisher" Phipps was disqualified in his bout against undefeated Leo Nolan last night in Pompano Beach, FL.

According to my Fightnews.com colleague Randy Hammonds(who also has a similar website to this one -- Floridaboxingnews.com --) Nolan won by disqualification at 2:07 of the eighth round after referee Dennis DeBon disqualified Phipps for spitting out his mouthpiece too often. That happened five times in the fight, including twice in the eighth and final round. Nolan improved to 26-0 (11 KOs) and won the vacant USBO Heavyweight championship in the process. Phipps dropped to 17-5 (10 KOs). This was his second straight loss.

Honestly, Considering the general opinion of Phipp's chin, this was not a bad showing. Nolan is a top 25 heavweight and for Phipps to go 8 rounds with him at least means there is hope in his chin. Was the fight competitive?

Nolan is a 34 year old heavyweight who began as a cruiserweight with only 10KOs in 26 wins, so he has no punch. Citing an 8 round TKO loss to Nolan as showing hope for Phipps' chin is really grasping at straws. Phipps has proven that when he steps in with someone who can hit, he gets hurt. Hopefully his handlers will keep him far away from anyone with a punch, or even better far away from any other fight. He trained hard, had some fun wins, got the crowd behind him, but now is his time to let that all go.

True, being a bit optomistic considering I highly doubt he'll retire.
