The state of Maryland has dropped misdemeanor assault charges against former IBF Junior Lightweight champion Gervonta Davis when the accuser decided not to pursue the matter any further.
Davis and his accuser, Anthony Wheeler, were seen shaking hands as they left Baltimore District Court. According to the Baltimore Sun, the 23-year-old Davis originally faced first-degree assault charges in connection with an August 1st incident. Wheeler, who described himself as a childhood friend of Davis, alleged that Davis punched him in the side of the head with a gloved fist. The first-degree assault charge was dropped on Oct. 19 by the state. Police did not charge Davis. Wheeler, of Baltimore, pressed charges with the District Court commissioner on Aug. 3, and a warrant for Davis was served in mid-September.
August was a tumultuous month for Davis. After the early incident in August, Davis (19-0, 18 KO's) was stripped of his IBF title when he came in overweight for his title defense against Francisco Fonseca. Davis won the bout by eight-round TKO, however, it was not one of his better performances. Davis said on social media that he looks forward to fighting in early 2018.
