Much like their brethren in the Virginia/North Carolina Golden Gloves on March 25th, the competition in the Washington Golden Gloves championship at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD was very spirited with some outstanding contests.
In the Open Division, it was a great night for the Avelar Brothers -- Tommy and Wilfredo -- from the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center. With brother Brian working the corners, both men advanced to the Regional Championships with victories on Saturday. Tommy defeated Ebrima Jawara of Laurel to win his second straight 132 Pound championship while Wilfredo captured the 141 Pound title with a win over Donnell Poe of Old School. The Sugar Ray Leonard Center would capture the Open team trophy.
In a marquee bout at 152 Pounds, Keeshawn Williams (Next-Up) defeated Kalonni Daly (Sugar Ray Leonard). At 165 pounds, Ashton Sykes (Odenton) scored the only stoppage victory of the night defeating Stephaun Hopps (Headbangers) in the third round.
Genc Pllana (Simon Brown) had the best performance of the evening defeating a very game Keon Burroughs (Headbangers) to capture his second consecutive 175-pound title. Pllana's outing would have been even better received by the audience had he not included outlandish in-ring antics like pretending to throw kicks during the contest. Pllana was verbally reprimanded by Potomac Valley Association officials after the bout.
In other Open Division championship bouts, Rasheed Wright (Headbangers) makes a return to the Regionals by capturing the 114-pound championship with a win over Paul Jerry (Hillcrest). Thomas Mottinger (Main Street) won the 201-pound title defeating Shaka Williams (NOMIS) and Malik Titus (Time 2 Grind) defeated Nathaniel Copeland (Tony's Gym) to earn the 201-pound championship. Marcus Wright (Keystone) won the 123-pound division title by walkover.
In the Novice Division, the Headbangers Gym won the Novice team trophy by sending three boxers to the Regional Championships. Brandon Brockington won the 114-pound title with a victory over Luis Estrada (Dover Boxing) while Elan Trombley captured the 165-pound championship by defeating Tory Hilton (Unattached). DaJuan Concepcion won the 132-pound title by walkover.
At 152 pounds, Davonte Warren (Odenton) put on a strong performance to win the title
over a game Darnell Pitman (Knowledge). Ian Simmons captured the 141-pound championship with a victory over Sean Cormier (Kicked-Up). DeAngelo McDonald (Tony's Gym) earned the 123-Pounds title with a win over Brient Rodriguez (Champions). At 201+ pounds, James McMurdo (Main Street) defeated Justin Maggi (Simon Brown). Aziz Williams (MVJ Athletics) won the 178-pound title by walkover.
The Regional Championships will take place on Saturday, April 22nd at Rosecroft Raceway. We should have a bout sheet later this week and we will do a full preview of the card on the Boxing Along The Beltway Google App For Android the week of the championships.
