Undefeated Upper Marlboro, MD heavyweight Mike "Silverback" Balogun won a six-round unanimous decision over veteran Grover "The Cobra" Young of Memphis, TN in the main event of the inaugural Victory Boxing Management card at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.
In crossing the six-round threshold for the first time in his young pro career, Balogun focused on his boxing skills and used good foot movement throughout the contest against the awkward Young, who showed Balogun a lot of his left shoulder and made himself a difficult target to hit at times. Young sparingly engaged with Balogun during the contest except during the final round when he landed some wild shots that didn't bother Balogun, who won by shutout on one card, 60-54 and won 59-55 on the other two cards. Balogun remains undefeated at 11-0, eight KO's while Young falls to 12-22-3, eight KO's.
There were only two other bouts on the card. Washington, DC welterweight Cornell "Hitman" Hines made a successful pro debut, stopping the equally debuting Zach Johnson of Rochester, NY at 1:18 of the first round. Hines spent the round chasing Johnson around the ring as Johnson quickly decided he did not want to engage with the charging Hines. Hines landed a couple of right hands that dropped Johnson to his knees and forced referee Michelle Myers to stop the bout without administering a count.
Also on the card, District Heights, MD super middleweight Jason Bell won a relatively easy four-round unanimous decision over debuting George Sheppard of Newport News, VA. Bell landed solid combinations to the body throughout the contest to help gain the shutout (40-36) win. Bell is now 2-0, one KO.
Bell's twin brother, Justin was scheduled to be on the card but suffered an injury in training.
The matchmaker for the card was Brian Dillon and the ring announcer was Henry "Discombobulating" Jones.
We have an interview with Mike Balogun after his contest.
