Washington, DC's Lamont Peterson won a 12-round unanimous decision over a very game David Avanesyan of Pyatigorsk, Russia to win the WBA "regular" Welterweight championship tonight at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, OH.
A 16-month layoff did not hurt Peterson as he used a strong body attack and basically outworked Avanesyan over the 12 rounds in what was a very entertaining contest. Peterson was able to work his way in and take what Avanesyan was able to offer. Peterson would win by scores of 115-113 and 116-112 (twice).
Peterson captures a world title in his second weight division and raises his record to 35-3-1, 17 KO's while Avanesyan, who came in as the defending champion, falls to 22-2-1, 11 KO's.
